Hamstring injury rules Rohit Sharma out of South Africa Tests

Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the Test leg of India’s tour of South Africa with an injury to his left hamstring. The Gujarat opener Priyank Panchal has been drafted into the squad as his replacement.ESPNcricinfo has learned that Rohit suffered the injury during a net session before the India squad entered quarantine in Mumbai, from where they are scheduled to travel to South Africa this week. For Rohit, this is the second major tour affected by injury in the last 12 months. He only featured in the third and fourth Tests of India’s 2020-21 tour of Australia, missing the first two Tests due to a hamstring injury picked up during IPL 2020.Related

Rohit’s absence will be a blow to India’s preparations given he has been their highest Test run-getter in 2021, and one of only two batters – Rishabh Pant being the other – with a 40-plus average from 10 or more innings. Since moving to the top of the order during the home series against South Africa in 2019, Rohit has scored 1462 runs in 16 Tests at an average of 58.48, with five centuries including, most recently, a Player-of-the-Match-winning 127 in India’s win at The Oval in September.KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal are the other openers in India’s Test squad apart from the uncapped Panchal.Rohit had also been named vice-captain of the Test squad, apart from taking over as full-time captain in the white-ball formats. It remains to be seen if India will hand the vice-captaincy back to the out-of-form Ajinkya Rahane, or name a new deputy to Virat Kohli. It is learned that the selectors are deliberating over Rohit’s availability for the three ODIs that follow the Test series. A decision is likely to be taken this week.Priyank Panchal captained India A in two of their three recent four-day games in South Africa•Cricket South Africa

This isn’t Panchal’s maiden call-up to the Test squad. Earlier this year he was part of an extended India squad that took on England in four Tests at home. Panchal, who is 31 and leads Gujarat in domestic cricket, was among the reserve openers for that series alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran. While Panchal is a relative unknown to the wider public, he has been one of the regulars for India A over the last few years. A veteran of 100 first-class matches, Panchal was most-recently part of India A’s shadow tour of South Africa, where he captained the team in two of the three four-day games in Bloemfontein. He made scores of 96, 24 and 0 in his three innings on tour.Panchal’s stocks rose significantly since his breakout Ranji Trophy season in 2016-17, where he topped the run charts with 1310 runs in 17 innings at an average of 87.33. His first-class highest, an unbeaten 314, came against Punjab that season. Those runs were part of a historic run for Gujarat, who clinched their maiden Ranji Trophy title. Following Parthiv Patel’s retirement last year, Panchal took over the Gujarat captaincy.

During Liverpool's annual visit to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for their festive meet and greet, a number of players met Archie White, who has a rare form of cancer called myeloid sarcoma. The 12-year-old is an avid Wrexham fan and has the club's flags and shirts around his bed. When Reds star Curtis Jones checked in on the youngster, he cheekily tried to get him to support Liverpool instead. Archie also admitted he was blown away getting a visit from Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

The clip begins with Archie introducing himself, that he lives in Wrexham and supports the club. The exchange follows below…

Jones begins by saying, "Hello, hello. We're going to have a tough job here, I can see. We've got a big job on our hands of trying to make you a fan of us, haven't we?"

Archie told the camera crew: "I was nervous but it was very, very good. I enjoyed it. [Virgil] Van Dijk [was the best player to meet]."

When Van Dijk visited his bedside, he said: "I've got someone here to talk to you Max," while holding up his phone for a video call.

This is not the first time Archie, who has a cancer that affects less than one in a million children, has enjoyed a special visit this year. Wrexham forward Ollie Palmer popped in last month and co-owner Rob McElhenney had a video call with him as well. So, for all of the Liverpool squad's efforts, it may be a hard task convincing him to switch teams.

Aston Villa now table offer to sign £8k-p/w teen compared to Sergio Aguero

Aston Villa have now tabled an offer to sign a forward who models his game on Sergio Aguero, it has been reported, with Unai Emery's side already handed an answer.

Villa reconsidering attacking additions

After Ollie Watkins' exceptional Premier League season at Villa Park, the priority was to find a suitable backup for the England international this summer. But that depended on outgoings. For much of the summer it looked promising, with Jhon Duran drawing interest from first Chelsea and then West Ham United in recent weeks.

Jhon Duran scores for Aston Villa

However, the pair have looked elsewhere after it proved difficult to meet Aston Villa's £40m valuation of the Colombian striker, with West Ham signing Niclas Fullkrug and Chelsea in advanced talks to sign Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion.

It has left Villa with Duran still at the club ahead of their Premier League opener against West Ham at the London Stadium. Recalled striker Cameron Archer is also in situ and there is little room to sign an expensive new striker to compete with Watkins or provide high quality cover in instances where the Englishman is injured or unfit.

ByJoe Nuttall Aug 8, 2024

As a result, they could now have to pivot their transfer plans to sign a younger, less experienced striker for a lower fee and attempt to turn them into the next superstar, much like they did with the likes of Ezri Konsa in defence. And reports in Turkey suggest they may have found their man.

Villa table offer for teenage striker

That comes with Villa one of two clubs who have reportedly tabled an opening offer to sign highly-rated Turkey striker Semih Kilicsoy this summer. The 18-year-old can play across the frontline, with Besiktas using him as a left-winger and a striker across the 2023/24 campaign.

That was his breakthrough season in Turkey, with Kilicsoy making 23 appearances in the Super Lig and grabbing 12 goals in the process, a run of form that saw him handed his debut for the Turkish national team ahead of EURO 2024 and named as part of Vincenzo Montella's squad for the competition, though he played just a single minute.

Speaking earlier in the season, Besiktas football academy director Mehmet Eksi likened him to Gerd Muller, but revealed Kilicsoy himself prefers another comparison.

"As youth coaches, we compare Semih to Gerd Müller. Some compared him to Agüero. He also sees Agüero as his idol", he explained.

Now, Turkish outlet Sabah reveal that Fulham and Aston Villa have both tabled bids for his services this summer, with Emery's reported offer around 18m euros (£15.4m). However, they add that both have been knocked back, with Kilicsoy still having four years left to run on his £8,000 a week deal in Turkey and Besiktas in no rush to part ways with him.

It is unclear whether either side will return for the teenager in the remaining weeks of the transfer window, but should they opt not to and the striker enjoys another strong season, they could well see themselves muscled out by other suitors in 12 months time.

Ben Stokes among wickets as England warm-up finally gets underway

England Lions XI make 226 for 4 against potential Test attack featuring Stokes, Anderson and Broad

Ben Stokes was England’s most-successful bowler as the Brisbane rains finally relented, allowing the tourists their most significant warm-up action since arriving in Australia.Stokes claimed 2 for 31 from 10 overs in his first red-ball outing since appearing for Durham in July, as an England Lions XI batted through the scheduled third day at Ian Healy Oval. Three batters retired their innings not out in order to give others an opportunity, with Liam Norwell and captain Joe Root the other England XI bowlers to take wickets. Both sides featured 13 players, with Alex Lees captaining the Lions. Lees and Zak Crawley batted through the first session against a potential Test attack of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson, Jack Leach and Stokes, with Saqib Mahmood also involved for England.Lees was first to retire, before Stokes struck to remove Crawley, the top-scorer for the Lions XI with 45. Dan Lawrence did not last long, removed by Norwell for 1, but Ollie Pope spent some time in the middle before falling to Root’s offspin.James Bracey and Tom Abell kept the bowlers at bay before retiring not out, and Stokes claimed his second wicket when dismissing Chris Woakes late on.Following four straight days of washed-out practice across two fixtures in Brisbane, England managed to get through 78 overs, with Anderson bowling eight, Broad 11 and Robinson 12, while Leach also went wicketless from his 18 overs.

Romano: Man Utd hold talks to swap Wan-Bissaka and sign £50k-p/w "jewel"

In what could be a shrewd deal, Manchester United have reportedly "started discussing" a swap deal that would see Aaron Wan-Bissaka leave in favour of a possible upgrade this summer.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils have already flexed their new-found muscles with minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in charge of his first summer transfer window, welcoming both Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro. But there could still be more to come before the new Premier League campaign gets underway against Fulham on August 16, given that rumours have since linked the Red Devils to the likes of Ivan Toney and Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Offers made: Man Utd target £59m Amrabat upgrade who's like De Jong

The “monster” midfielder would be an incredible addition to the team.

3 ByJack Salveson Holmes Jul 25, 2024

There have also been rumours on the departure front, with Jadon Sancho unsurprisingly the biggest name among those. The winger, who has undeniably been a transfer flop since arriving for a reported £73m in 2021 may not be the only one heading for an exit, however. As things stand, Wan-Bissaka's Manchester United contract is set to expire next summer, allowing the right-back to leave Old Trafford in a free deal, unless a reported swap deal comes off.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United and INEOS have "started discussing" a swap deal for Denzel Dumfries in what would see Wan-Bissaka head in the opposite direction to Inter Milan. The Dutchman, on around £50,000-a-week compared to Wan-Bissaka's £90,000-a-week, is set to be out of contract this time next year, which means that Inter could be in need of this deal just as much as those at Old Trafford.

Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries

Romano told GiveMeSport: “They're considering several players for that position. So it's true that some intermediaries started discussing this idea between Wan-Bissaka and Dumfries. It is not something very easy. So at the moment, it is not something advanced.

“But some intermediaries are trying to bring it to the table of both clubs and see what's going to happen. But again, it’s not that easy. Both players are out of contract next year, so this is why this idea started. Let's see what's going to happen between the clubs. Again, not something close or imminent.”

"Jewel" Dumfries could be an upgrade on Wan-Bissaka

Although Wan-Bissaka has done well to fight for his place in Erik ten Hag's side, it must still be said that the Red Devils would be far better suited to signing a more offensive option down the right-hand side if they are to become a team capable of permanently stepping onto the front foot. Whether it's Liverpool, Manchester City or, though to a lesser extent, Arsenal, the Premier League's best sides all deploy fullbacks capable of contributing going forward. Now, United may need to do the same.

The numbers show that whilst Wan-Bissaka is better defensively, with a better ball recovery rate, but Dumfries' attacking output would make him an invaluable option. Described as a "jewel" by former Barcelona and Netherlands midfielder Ibrahim Affellay, Manchester United would be taking a significant step towards the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City by swapping Wan-Bissaka for Dumfries this summer.

Danni Wyatt 69* fires Southern Brave to third win from three

A scintillating innings from Danni Wyatt enabled Southern Brave to chase down an apparently taxing target of 141 with ease at the Ageas Bowl, as the home side joined Trent Rockets at the top of the women’s Hundred table with three wins from three. Wyatt bided her time before upping the tempo with a fusillade of fours and sixes during the second half of the innings, as Birmingham Phoenix’s attack was found severely wanting.Wyatt’s opening partner, Smriti Mandhana, holed out in the second set of five, hitting into the wind against Erin Burns. But none of the other Phoenix bowlers managed to pick up a wicket thereafter, with the run-out of Sophia Dunkley coming when Abtaha Maqsood dropped a return chance off Wyatt on to the stumps at the non-striker’s end.Wyatt could also have been out lbw a couple of deliveries later, but Phoenix’s captain Amy Jones opted not to review an lbw appeal off Maqsood that Hawk-Eye later showed to have been hitting off stump. Having been chugging along on 25 off 22 just beyond the halfway mark of the innings, Wyatt took 44 off the next 18, hitting the ball to all parts of the ground before finishing things in style by carting her fourth six over deep midwicket off Issy Wong. That completed the highest successful chase of the women’s competition, and rendered an improved display from Phoenix’s top order largely academic.Phoenix fire (apparently)
It has taken a few goes, but Phoenix look like they might have found a batting order they can settle on. Having started the tournament with Shafali Verma opening alongside Katie Mack, they pushed up Erin Burns in place of Mack in their second match and here partnered Verma with Eve Jones. The left-hand, right-hand combination brought immediate dividends with a 58-run stand – which included the third-highest Powerplay score in the women’s competition of 40 without loss.Eve Jones was ‘Hero of the Match’ in defeat in Phoenix’s opener, having anchored the innings with 47 from 41 at No. 3, but dropped down the order for the spin-heavy encounter in Manchester. Pushed up again here, she helped counter the twin pace threat of Anya Shrubsole and Lauren Bell, who played key roles in Brave’s opening two wins. Both had trouble adjusting to bowling to the left-hander in windy conditions, with Jones taking Shrubsole’s first three legitimate balls for 10 runs.Related

  • Priest leaves Spirit without a prayer in 18-run win at Lord's

The proactive start from Eve Jones also allowed Verma to take a bit of time to settle. Much has been expected of the India opener but she has had a quiet start to the Hundred after seeing her form tail off during the multi-format series against England. She only faced two of the first 14 deliveries, then pulled Shrubsole for a boundary, before tucking into Charlotte Taylor’s offspin with a couple of trademark biffs over mid-on (perhaps aided by Brave’s field placings). An encouraging start drifted somewhat, as she fell lbw to Amanda-Jade Wellington – but 22 off 20 represented her best outing of the Hundred so far.Jones the finisher
Amy Jones has looked Phoenix’s most-dangerous batter, but her returns had been affected by a malfunctioning top order and starts of 37 for 3 and 35 for 4 in the opening two games. Here she came out at No. 3 for the tenth set of five with her side in a strong position, and although Wellington struck again in her 10-ball stretch, Jones and Katie Mack had licence to go hard down the back nine, putting on a sparkling stand of 71 off 43.Amy Jones moves across to slog sweep•Getty Images

The pair initially saw off the middle-phase threat of Bell with a handful of nudged singles, and then combined intelligent hitting with hard running to get the scoreboard rattling. They successfully targeted the Brave spinners, four times hitting opening deliveries from Fi Morris and the two Taylors for four; and when Bell returned, Jones was confident enough to walk across her stumps to the inswinger and belt it imperiously through backward square leg. Bell went wicketless but Phoenix crucially lost altitude towards the end of the innings, only managing to score 22 off the last 20 deliveries.Slam Dunkley
The rise of Dunkley into the top tier of English batting has been one of the stories of the summer, after an unbeaten 74 on Test debut and 73 not out to see home a successful England chase in her maiden ODI innings. Her form had tailed off a little, with single-figures scores in the T20Is and innings of 6 and 16 in Brave green – but her boundary-laden assault after the early loss of Mandhana was key in giving the home side a chance of reeling in a 140-plus target.Dunkley’s aggressive innings featured a superbly timed flick off the pace of Wong and an impudent uppercut over third man to Emily Arlott. She might have been fortunate to survive after top-edging a spiralling catch to Jones, with Arlott’s delivery harshly judged a no-ball on height – but she was definitely unlucky to be run out backing up, when Maqsood dropped the ball on to the stumps. Her innings also allowed Wyatt to slipstream her way into form, as the game’s momentum swung towards Brave.Wyatt goes through gears
Wyatt is one of the most-destructive batters in the women’s game but she also showed her sense of game management to help snuff out a daunting chase with an eye-popping 18 balls to spare. She scored 6 from 6 during the Powerplay and was going at just above a run a ball when joined by Stafanie Taylor, but killed Phoenix’s chances with a clinical assault. Her first six saw her step outside leg stump and hammer Wong’s pace over extra cover, and she then swept Maqsood over deep square leg, before hitting Georgia Elwiss over long-off. The third-wicket stand with Taylor was worth 74, Wyatt crunching 51 of them, as Brave’s fans got a first glimpse of what their power-packed batting order can do.

£25k-p/w ace Craig Bellamy called "top" asks to leave Burnley this summer

One of Burnley's shining lights from last season could be on his way out this summer after he asked for a move away, according to the latest reports.

Burnley chasing new boss

Following the shock departure of Vincent Kompany to Bayern Munich after failing to secure survival in the Premier League, Burnley remain on the hunt for a new manager. The Clarets have been linked with the likes of Frank Lampard and Ruud Van Nistelrooy, but the latter now seems set to snub a managerial role to join the coaching staff at Manchester United.

The worst points totals in Premier League history

There are two new entries from last season…

ByJack Salveson Holmes Jun 2, 2024

It leaves Burnley still searching for a fresh face in the dugout, and now any new manager may have to make do without a key man.

Exit pending in blow for Bellamy

Now, it has emerged that Aro Muric has asked to leave Burnley this summer. Muric only arrived at Turf Moor in 2022, arriving from Manchester City in a move that saw him sign a four year deal worth £25,000 a week.

However, after being first choice for Kompany during their Championship success, he was relegated to the substitutes bench following the arrival of James Trafford, who endured a tough first campaign at Turf Moore.

As a result, Muric was recalled for the final stretch of the season, starting each of the final 10 games of the campaign and impressing despite a calamitous own goal, racking up by far the highest performance rating in the Burnley squad.

Following that gaffe, assistant manager Craig Bellamy was quick to jump to Muric's defence.

"I’ve no issue with it. Aro is top. Get the ball again, look for the pass again. You see the save he makes in the last minute. Top. That to me is a goalkeeper. We all make mistakes, it’s how you respond from it. So I’ve got nothing but praise for him, even more.”

In fact, of goalkeepers to appear more than once, no one performed better than the Kosovan shot-stopper last term, with post shot expected goals figures revealing that Burnley conceded six fewer than they should have with him between the posts, compared to six more than they should have with Trafford as their no.1.

However, he is unlikely to be at Burnley next season if he gets his way, with the Daily Mail revealing that the 25-year-old has asked to leave the club this summer following their return to the Championship.

He is not short of suitors either; it is claimed that "several Premier League clubs" and "teams abroad" have registered an interest in the shot-stopper, and Muric is keen to find a spot as a no.1 away from Turf Moor despite the possibility that Trafford could also depart this summer.

He won't face too much opposition to his departure, with the report adding that the Lancashire outfit will "respect his desire to play elsewhere", and it is added that a deal could come in "the next few weeks".

Though it would come as a blow to lose the talents of Muric, and more so should Trafford also depart, his form has likely earned him a top flight stay.

Archer ruled out of all cricket for the rest of 2021 after recurrence of elbow fracture

The England seamer will play no part in the Test series against India, the T20 World Cup or the Ashes

Jofra Archer has been ruled out of all cricket for the rest of the year following a recurrence of a stress fracture in his right elbow.Archer, the England fast bowler, was forced home from the tour of India at the start of the year and subsequently forced to pull out of the IPL due to pain in the elbow. He underwent surgery to remove a bone fragment from the elbow in May.After returning to bowling with his county side, Sussex, in recent weeks he felt increasing discomfort and was sent for further scans. These revealed he had suffered a recurrence of the stress fracture that first became apparent in South Africa at the start of 2020. The ECB insists that the operation and stress fracture are not connected.Related

As a result, the ECB has announced he will play no part in the LV= Insurance Test series against India, the T20 World Cup or the Ashes.Given that he has only played six Tests, three ODIs and 11 T20Is since he was first troubled by the problem, the news is bound to raise question marks about Archer’s future career. While he is, at 26, young enough to come again, it remains to be seen if he will opt to limit himself to a career in white-ball cricket in a bid to alleviate further such issues. The news is a crushing blow to England’s Ashes hopes. They had aimed to utilise an attack including Archer, Mark Wood and Ollie Stone in Australia with hope of exploiting the pace and bounce in the surfaces. Stone, too, is currently recovering from a stress fracture of the lower back.Whatever occurs in Archer’s future, his place in England’s cricketing history is assured. As the man who led their attack throughout the 2019 World Cup – including bowling the Super Over in the final – he played a huge part in their success. He produced several spells in the Ashes series that followed – notably at Lord’s – which were as quick as anything produced by an England bowler in many, many years. At that stage, it seemed Archer and England were at the start of an exciting journey. This news will raise concerns over how much more there is to come from him.

Chelsea must rue selling superstar who’s just as influential as Palmer

da lvbet: The Chelsea faifthul have had the privilege of watching numerous superstars play for their club, with the likes of Eden Hazard, Didier Drogba, and Frank Lampard coming to mind.

da betcris: However, the latest individual to join that list is without doubt Cole Palmer, who exceeded all expectations during his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge.

Cole Palmer

The former Manchester City player was the heartbeat of the Blues, ending the season with 22 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League alone.

However, there was once a young Chelsea ace who got away, and today, he would’ve been just as influential as Palmer.

The fee that Chelsea sold Jamal Musiala for

At the age of seven, Jamal Musiala moved to England from his birthplace, Germany, and by the age of eight, he had become a Chelsea academy player.

However, Football London said that the attacking midfielder failed to see a pathway into the first team, and Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich ‘presented a clear developmental path compared to Cobham.’

Bayern Munich forward Jamal Musiala.

Having already made up his mind, the German international then left Chelsea at the age of 16 to join Bayern Munich for just £170k, as per the Daily Mail.

Despite Chelsea offering him a new contract, the club had to settle for having a 20% sell-on clause in his contract at Bayern instead, with what could prove to be one of the biggest howlers in the club’s recent history.

Jamal Musiala’s 23/24 campaign

Since his departure from England, it’s fair to say that Musiala has developed into one of the most promising footballers on the entire globe.

If it already hadn’t by now, his name has reached those outside of Germany thanks to an incredible start to the 2024 European Championships, where he’s one of two players to have scored in both games so far.

Germany star Jamal Musiala

It’s fantastic to see the 21-year-old thrive on one of the biggest stages, especially given that his 2023/24 campaign was hindered by numerous small injuries that made him miss 12 matches.

Regardless of his setbacks, the German international was still simply superb in the league, boasting a record of ten goals and six assists in just 20 starts under Thomas Tuchel.

Nonetheless, as you can see from the table, Musiala had the potential to be just as influential as Palmer was last season, which is quite remarkable.

Just like the England international, Bayern’s number ten has the technical class to operate out wide or in central zones, but most importantly, he can win a game on his own, as shown by his goals and assists.

Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala.

Furthermore, Musiala has an unpredictable element to his game that enables him to cause chaos against the opposition, with his ability to weave past defenders easily being his trademark move.

The former Chelsea academy star cannot be afforded any space whatsoever, as the outcome is almost guaranteed to be costly, and the same can be said for Palmer.

Musiala’s ability to produce endless amounts of creativity regardless of the game state is what makes him “out of this world,” as dubbed by football scout Jacek Kulig, and it’s fair to say that he’s the catalyst for the majority of attacking situations at Bayern.

Sadly, this is what Chelsea missed out on, and a duo of Palmer and Musiala could have developed into one of the deadliest partnerships to have graced the Premier League.
