Fabrizio Romano reveals what Man Utd did to advance Baleba deal on Saturday

da cassino online: After a prolonged negotiation with Brentford to sign Bryan Mbeumo, Manchester United now seem to be upping the speed at which they are completing transfers as the close of the window looms near.

da betsul: United’s last pre-season game of the year against Fiorentina was used to show off new striker Benjamin Sesko, who has signed from RB Leipzig for £74 million. United and Newcastle both were pursuing the Slovenian striker, but Ruben Amorim’s side came out on top despite offering lower wages.

United’s next transfer target appears to be a defensive midfielder, and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is the club’s preferred choice. Most of United’s business this summer, with the exception of Sesko, has focused on Premier League-proven players as they are seen as less of a risk, and Baleba meets that requirement with 61 Premier League appearances under his belt.

Romano delivers weekend Baleba Update

Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba

On his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano revealed that United had been holding talks with Baleba’s party over the weekend. It would appear that United are being persistent in their pursuit of this deal and have been speaking “again and again”, as recently as Saturday, with the star’s camp.

At this stage, the talks mainly surround the player’s conditions for joining the club, including the contract and the salary. At the start of last season, Baleba was earning £12,500 a week at Brighton, so he could be receiving a major bump in pay should this move go through.

It currently looks like a major sticking point in the deal would be the club negotiations. Romano added that United are aware of Brighton’s stance and they know “It’s still not something advanced or concrete or easy, they know that the Brighton wall remains very high”.

Despite Brighton’s resistance, United still have hope, and Romano summarised the current situation by saying “as the player is not closing the door… Manchester United feel that they want to try”.

Brighton have become known as a club that identifies talent, develops them and sells them on for a profit. Some of their best work with this strategy can be seen in their defensive midfield department.

The above table shows Brighton’s success in this market since 2018, when they signed Yves Bissouma. If Brighton receives the fee they want for Baleba, they’ll have made approximately £197 million in profit in seven years from defensive midfielders alone (excluding sell-on clauses and add-ons).

Although Brighton always command a high fee, both Bissouma and Moises Caicedo have been good transfers for their new clubs. Bissomua played the entirety of last season’s Europa League final, which saw Tottenham win their first major trophy since 2008, and Caicedo has won both the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup with Chelsea.

While United may struggle to sign Baleba this window without some major player sales or a shrewdly constructed deal, he may be worth going all out for next summer. The midfield seems like one of the last pieces of the team Amorim needs to fill, and with Brighton’s track record of development in this position, Baleba may be the missing piece.

Williamson backs international windows and WTC 'tweaks'

The former New Zealand captain sees the current WTC structure as “not ideal”

Williamson: Current WTC structure ‘not ideal’

Kane Williamson has backed calls to introduce designated windows for international cricket, which he believes could help to turn the World Test Championship (WTC) into a “more level competition”.The ICC’s cricket committee will consider proposals to tweak the WTC’s format when it meets in Zimbabwe later this month ahead of the start of the 2025-27 cycle. ECB chair Richard Thompson is among those calling for “a fairer, better competition” after criticism around uneven schedules and a points system that Ben Stokes has described as “utterly confusing”.Williamson, who captained New Zealand to the inaugural WTC title in 2021, described the current structure – which sees Australia, England and India play far more fixtures in a cycle than anyone else – as “not ideal”. He also backed the concept of four protected 21-day international windows per year, an idea proposed by the World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) last week.Related

Williamson opts out of New Zealand central contract for 2024-25

Protected windows on WCA wishlist for 'sustainable future'

“It comes back to scheduling,” Williamson told ESPNcricinfo. “I love Test cricket and I’d love to see it stay and I’d love to see it be a pathway for young cricketers still, alongside the T20 format… If you can prioritise windows where teams are playing each other consistently and somewhat evenly, then I think it just makes it [the WTC] a slightly more level competition.”The context now in Test cricket has certainly increased the effort and results. We don’t see draws any more, basically, in Test cricket, so every team’s pushing for a result when there’s something on it. For us as a country, winning the inaugural Test Championship final, it was really special and a great moment in our history.6:00

Williamson on how T20 leagues have changed cricket

“You put a tournament in front of somebody or a team, and they’re always quite keen to win it… Context is something that’s been spoken about for a while now, and it is great to see that there’s an effort to do that. It’s just how you keep tinkering it because there’s so many different opinions with teams, who they play and how you sort of continue to make it level.”South Africa reached June’s WTC final against Australia at Lord’s after playing only 12 Tests in the 2023-25 cycle, the joint-fewest of any team, and their route to the final has prompted some criticism over the WTC’s unequal schedule.”[Teams] get the cards that they are dealt and they try to make use of what’s in front of them, and take those opportunities,” Williamson said.”Naturally, the fact that it’s different for each team is not ideal. Any time you get the opportunity to review after a two-year Test Championship window, to try and tweak it a little bit, that’s fine. It’s still in its infancy, really, as a competition, so you’re always going to look at those things… It’s tricky though: there’s 12 months in a year, right? That’s difficult.”Williamson believes that 50-over cricket has already “given way” as a format. “I still think the ODI World Cup is at the top of the list in terms of an international event to win. When I first started, you’d have a tour for six weeks… Now, you tend to go from one thing to the next, and so it [50-over cricket] may well be the thing that gives way.”He also believes that the rapid and continued growth of franchise cricket poses significant challenges for national boards outside of the ‘big three’ of Australia, England and India, with financial incentives often drawing young players away from Test cricket.”We’re a small country and a smallish economy, certainly relative to some of the big, big nations,” Williamson said.”You mentioned the big three, and the focus on the five Test-match series that they have, and I’m a fan of watching those too. But [the question is] where that leaves everybody else, not just in terms of how they fit in their international cricket, but how we end up playing each other, or how you can still get that even competition across the board. And not just that, but [how you] still create that pathway for young players to see their heroes perhaps playing for their country.Despite giving up a central contract, Kane Williamson is eager to play for New Zealand•Getty Images

“There’s so much cricket happening in the world, and so many different opportunities for players… The interesting part is what messages that sends to your young players, and what they aspire to be now. You can only say that’s gone from […] a pure Test focus, where that was the start of my career as a youngster, to maybe looking at playing in the IPL, or playing in some of these other big leagues, and country vs franchises and all that sort of discussion.”Williamson has played more than 350 times for New Zealand across a 15-year international career but his priorities are slowly shifting aged 34. He is still active across international formats but turned down a central contract for the 2024/25 season in order to play in the SA20, and is due to feature in the PSL, the T20 Blast and the Hundred later this year.”At the moment, there’s no clear windows that meet everybody’s needs, and that’s the tough part,” Williamson said of the global calendar. “If you do have clear windows, and you do allow that full focus… then you can just take your attention there. What we’re seeing a lot is players having to make decisions [themselves] and that takes away a little bit from one part, whether it’s the international or the franchise space.”Things are moving quickly… It’s quite interesting, but I still absolutely love playing for New Zealand and I’m looking forward to doing that again in the future. But it is nice: there are some other options you can have, and with a young family as well, it’s nice that they can have me around a little bit.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ajax's poor sporting performance and the loss of revenue from Europe are causing hurdles in their transfer activity. The Eredivisie club are witnessing a significant decline in its turnover amid reduced transfer income, high wages, and transfer spending in previous years. The Dutch side were not able to match Alvarez's €6m salary cap and found even the bare loan amount unfeasible, and had to pull out of the deal.

Alvarez was signed by West Ham in 2023 from Ajax on a five-year contract. The midfielder started as an integral part of the system under former manager David Moyes and has since played 73 games for the club, in which he has scored two goals and registered three assists. The player has also been influential for the Mexican national team and has led his side to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2023 and the CONCACAF Nations League in 2025.

Will Young to make Test debut as BJ Watling ruled out

Young, 28, has been close to a Test debut before and was set to play against Bangladesh in 2019 before the final Test in Christchurch was cancelled following the terror attack in the city.He averages 43.76 in his first-class career with ten centuries, the most recent of which came against West Indies for New Zealand A last week”It’s an exciting opportunity for him at the top of the order and I know he’s just looking forward to getting involved after some near opportunities that didn’t eventuate,” captain Kane Williamson said. “He’s been around the environment for some time without getting his first opportunity so I think that’s also a real positive. Often you come into teams and it’s new, you are trying to get a feel for the group but he’s got that feel, he’s an experienced player, has played a lot of first-class cricket and to a very high standard and he deserves that opportunity.”He’s pretty calm and relaxed and knows that he just wants to go out and contribute as much as he can to the team so that attitude is a great thing to have.”Watling picked up the injury during his last outing in the Ford Trophy and following assessment in Hamilton it was decided there was too much risking including him for a Test.”He has seen it all before,” Williamson said. “He knows his body better than anybody. Obviously, he has got a sore hamstring at the moment, but he’s very confident that he can get back to full fitness quite soon. He himself is aware of the challenges you put your body through over a five-day period, and so it’s very difficult to go into a match at a sort of half-fitness.”He cares about the team more than anybody, so he sees it from that perspective. Through discussion with the management, they found that was the best option. He’s a leader in the group, and he showed that through the conversations we had yesterday.”A decision over the rest of the final XI is yet to be made with one of the key debates whether New Zealand go in with a frontline spin option in Mitchell Santner, who was called up in place of the injured Ajaz Patel, or opt for an all-pace attack.”It’s a little bit tricky,” Williamson said of the make-up of the likely XI. “Naturally that is always a bit of a challenge playing in New Zealand, and looking at the roles that you might believe have larger factors. It’s unique to here more than in other places in the world.”

CARY, N.C. – U.S. men's national team legend Jozy Altidore said he has no issue with Christian Pulisic requesting not to be a part of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup roster. Rather, the 35-year-old is excited to see the group that there for the tournament, ahead of what he describes as a "massive opportunity" for the national team program.

Speaking at The Soccer Tournament 2025, where he is coaching AFC Bournemouth, Altidore reflected on the AC Milan star’s absence and what it could mean for the USMNT heading into the continental competition.

"Listen, this is an opportunity for the team," Altidore told GOAL. "No one player replaces Christian, and if he needed the time off, he needed the time off. This is a chance for the group to come together and really step up with some big absences."

Altidore also shared his excitement about the next year of the footballing calendar for the country. Beginning in June 2025, the CONCACAF Gold Cup and FIFA Club World Cup will both be held in the U.S., and come next summer, the FIFA World Cup will follow in 2026, with matches played in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

"It’s a massive opportunity for soccer in this country, and a chance at a real rebirth for the game here. I’m excited, fans are excited, and the players are excited," he said. "It’s a real opportunity and I’m looking forward to it."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The U.S. roster for the Gold Cup this summer will feature plenty of new faces, amid an injury crisis, along with a handful of regulars being unavailable. In addition to Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, and Gio Reyna are unavailable due to the Club World Cup, while teammate of Pulisic's, Yunus Musah, is absent due to "personal reasons."

In the striker position, the U.S. is particularly going to be tested in the competition. Both Ricardo Pepi and Folarin Balogun are missing out due to injury, and after a tough performance in the March Nations League, Josh Sargent was left out of the squad this summer.

An area where Altidore excelled for the USMNT for over a decade, he believes it's a wide-open race at the moment – but with the group available for Mauricio Pochettino this summer, it's all about opportunity. MLS strikers Patrick Agyemang and Brian White are joined by uncapped 20-year-old prospect Damion Downs, Coventry's Haji Wright and FC Utrecht's Paxten Aaronson.

"The striker position is an interesting one," Altidore said. "It’s hard and not easy to play. There is a group of talented guys there, and any one of them could emerge. I’m looking forward to seeing them all."

  • WHAT ALTIDORE SAID ABOUT TST

Altidore was offered the coaching role with Bournemouth at the 7v7 tournament in North Carolina, thanks to U.S. international Tyler Adams – who plays for the senior team in England – and co-owner Michael B. Jordan, via a personal training initiative they collaborated on.

"The conversation stemmed from all of us at Sogility – a soccer tech training facility – and so Bournemouth was interested in partnering with businesses that are trying to push the envelope in soccer, and we started discussing how we could work together on this," Altidore explained. "There were some conversations with Michael's team, that's who I got in touch with originally, and he's getting more and more into soccer, so there was a lot of synergy there. Our groups are partnered on a couple of other ventures, so that just made a lot of sense."

Clement can ease Cantwell blow by relocating "aggressive" Rangers gem

Glasgow Rangers delivered arguably their most impressive display so far under the Philippe Clement regime on the weekend, defeating Hearts 5-0 at Ibrox.

The win saw them temporarily extend their lead to five points in the Premiership table over Celtic, although the Parkhead outfit did secure victory against Motherwell on Sunday.

The Light Blues face another tricky test this evening as they travel to Ayr to face a resurgent Kilmarnock side who have already defeated the Gers this term.

That was way back in August under different circumstances, but their plastic pitch is always difficult to play on and Clement’s men will have to be at their very best to secure all three points.

One player will be missing, however, as Todd Cantwell is expected to be unavailable for the next few weeks due to injury.

The latest on Todd Cantwell's injury

During the recent 3-0 win over St Johnstone, Cantwell was targeted by the opposition for more than his fair share of rough challenges, and he was eventually taken off after just 60 minutes clutching his hamstring.

While speaking to the media prior to the clash against Hearts, Clement delivered the injury news no supporter wanted to hear, saying: “Todd Cantwell will be out for a few weeks which is disappointing but that is football.”

Todd Cantwell

This means he is likely to miss the Europa League clashes against Benfica in March, along with a couple of Premiership games, and it represents a big blow, especially judging by his recent performances.

Todd Cantwell’s season in numbers

Under Michael Beale, Cantwell did not start the season as well as anticipated, registering only one assist under the Englishman before he was sacked in late September.

The former Norwich City gem was disrupted by a knee injury which he suffered against Celtic, having to wait until the start of November to score his first goal of the season.

Since being moved back into his preferred number ten slot, the 25-year-old has been wonderful. He has scored five league goals since Christmas Eve, has created four big chances, averages 1.6 key passes per game and has succeeded with 1.1 successful dribbles per game in the top flight this term.

There is no doubt Cantwell has been one of Clement’s main attacking threats of late, but they did not seem to miss his presence against Hearts, netting five without reply.

Tom Lawrence was utilised in the attacking midfield role, yet with a plastic pitch perhaps not being the best surface to play on, might Clement relocate another player?

Tom Lawrence

Mohamed Diomande only joined the club last month, yet his performances so far could tempt the Belgian manager into moving him into a more advanced role against Kilmarnock tonight.

What Rangers paid to sign Mohamed Diomande

With the squad thinning due to injury issues, Clement looked to strengthen during the January transfer window and he made three new signings.

Both Fabio Silva and Oscar Cortes arrived, and it has given the club a boost going forward, but the move for Diomande was certainly a surprise, especially with the depth Clement has in the midfield.

The 22-year-old signed a loan deal with an obligation to buy for a fee in excess of £4.3m and the move certainly looks like it has paid off already.

Mohammed Diomande

Clement will be keen to establish a serious player trading model at the Ibrox side over the coming years, buying young talent for cheap before selling on to make a profit, and Diomande certainly fits the specifications for this.

Despite playing only five games for the club thus far, the Ivorian has taken to Scottish football with ease, and he could be relocated tonight in place of Cantwell.

Mohamed Diomande’s Rangers statistics

The player was introduced to the first team gradually, having not played in a few weeks following his arrival, with Clement giving him just five and 11 minute cameos during his first two Premiership appearances for the club.

He was given his first start for the Gers against Ayr United in the Scottish Cup and ran the show against the second-tier outfit, which led to Clement unleashing him against St Johnstone in the league a few days later.

In a tense opening half, Diomande opened up his account for the club with an excellent goal to give the Light Blues a one-goal advantage heading into the break, and they eventually won 3-0.

He also won 100% of his ground duels against the Saints, while making two key passes, three tackles and one interception as he impressed for the club.

Better was to come against Hearts last weekend. The youngster scored the first goal of the game after just two minutes, calming a nervous Ibrox crowd, and it was yet another well-taken goal.

Once again, the midfielder won all of his ground duels along with succeeding with 100% of his dribble attempts, and it showcases his ability to not only be a reliable attacking outlet, but also be effective when his side don’t have the ball.

This should give Clement the licence to unleash the promising gem in a more advanced slot behind either Silva or Cyriel Dessers tonight.

Prior to his arrival in Glasgow, analyst John Walker hailed the talented midfielder, saying he was an “aggressive tackle and carrier” along with stating that he “absolutely loves the physical nature of midfield” and he has showcased these qualities already despite joining a month ago.

Securing all three points is the only thing that matters this evening for Rangers, as it will allow them to maintain their two-point advantage over Celtic in the race for the title.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

While Cantwell’s injury is not great, Clement must be buoyed by the fact he has a plethora of options available to him that can fill the void, with Diomande being the obvious example.

He has clearly shown in his previous five matches how much of a positive impact he can have in this Gers side and with a tricky encounter in Ayrshire approaching tonight, Diomande could well be the game-changer that sees the club head back up to Glasgow with three points in the bag.

Real Valladolid secured promotion back to La Liga at the first time of asking last season, but this was a humbling defeat. Pezzolano's side had made a solid account of themselves beforehand, though, beating Espanyol in their season-opener and producing an impressive defensive display at Real Madrid before two late goals worsened the scoreline. India's domestic 2020-21 season: Only Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali for men?

The BCCI is mulling a truncated domestic season in 2020-21, with the men starting from November 19 with the T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and ending with the Ranji Trophy on March 10. The tentative plan, seen by ESPNcricinfo, is yet to be ratified, but has no 50-overs competitions – neither Vijay Hazare Trophy nor Deodhar Trophy – in a season that also has no place for the first-class Duleep Trophy and the Irani Cup.Senior women’s cricket will feature both the One Day League and the T20 League, albeit with fewer games than the 2019-20 season, and is scheduled between November 1 and April 12. Challenger Trophies across all categories – men and women, senior and junior – find no place in the proposal.!function(){“use strict”;window.addEventListener(“message”,(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[“datawrapper-height”])for(var e in a.data[“datawrapper-height”]){var t=document.getElementById(“datawrapper-chart-“+e)||document.querySelector(“iframe[src*='”+e+”‘]”);t&&(t.style.height=a.data[“datawrapper-height”][e]+”px”)}}))}();

This news follows on from a board official telling ESPNcricinfo last week that a “priority list” of tournaments was being made with the Ranji Trophy on top.As per the proposed plan, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will be held first, starting ten days after the IPL, from November 19, ending on December 7. The Ranji Trophy is then scheduled to begin from December 13 and will go on till March 10, just before the scheduled 2021 IPL.Like in the past, the order of tournaments means that players could effectively be using the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament to impress the IPL franchises ahead of an auction, which in this case is scheduled to be held in December 2020 or January 2021.A zonal system was originally being thought about for the Ranji Trophy, with one city from each zone hosting teams across four or five venues, but that format isn’t to be found in the proposal. There will be five groups. The top 24 teams of last season will be split into groups A, B, and C, with the top two from each qualifying automatically to the quarter-finals. Among the third-placed teams, the team with the highest “quotient” will also go through. The eighth quarter-final spot will be decided after a playoff between the winners of Group D, which will have up to eight teams, and Group E, which consists of the six teams from the north-east.The bottom teams from groups A, B, and C will be relegated to Group D, with the top three teams from Group D going the other way.
