Dowman, after coming on against Leeds United, marked his first Arsenal league appearance by winning a penalty for Viktor Gyokeres to fire home in a 5-0 thrashing of the newly-promoted side.

Meanwhile, left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly, despite his ongoing battle with Riccardo Calafiori for a starting place this season, established himself as an England international during his breakthrough campaign last term.

The teenager started every Champions League knockout game for Arsenal in 24/25, including both of their semi-final legs against PSG, with Lewis-Skelly making 39 senior appearances in all competitions as a firm regular in Mikel Arteta’s starting eleven.

Sporting director Andrea Berta awarded both Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri with new long-term contracts in the summer to stave off interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, and Mosquera has already been blown away by what he’s seen from the pair.

As Lewis-Skelly fights for his left-back spot, Nwaneri is yet to start a single Premier League game so far this season — but that is testament to the abundance of attacking quality in Arsenal’s squad.

Martin Odegaard’s new injury could free up space for the latter to accumulate more minutes, if Eberechi Eze doesn’t completely steal the number 10 role, but it is important to remember that Nwaneri is still very much in his infancy.

Interestingly, Arsenal chiefs hold very high hopes for Mosquera too, and there is a belief behind-the-scenes that their new defender could soon become one of the best centre-backs in world football.

تحدث مدرب ريال مدريد، تشابي ألونسو في مؤتمر صحفي قبل المباراة أمام الهلال السعودي في كأس العالم للأندية، وعلّق على الصفقات الجديدة، وتأثير كارلو أنشيلوتي الملحوظ على الفريق.

ويلتقي ريال مدريد والهلال، مساء الأربعاء، بالجولة الأولى بمنافسات بطولة كأس العالم للأندية في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية.

ونشرت صحيفة “آس” الإسبانية تصريحات تشابي، وقال: “لقد مرّ علينا عدة أيام، ونستعيد اللاعبين تدريجيًا، الدوليون عادوا في وقت، والذين لعبوا في الولايات المتحدة عادوا لاحقًا، لكنني أعتقد أن الأمر يتعلق بالمسافات والتمركز، هذا ما سيجعلنا أفضل، أن نعرف أين يجب أن نكون، وأن نتموضع بشكل صحيح، وأن نكون فريقًا أكثر ترابطًا”.

وعن مركز جود بيلينجهام، أضاف: يملك القدرة على تغطية مساحة كبيرة من الملعب، لكنه يحتاج إلى الانطلاق من المركز الصحيح، لديه روح لاعب الوسط، يحب صناعة اللعب، ويملك القدرة على الوصول إلى منطقة الجزاء، لقد تحدثنا عن نقطة انطلاقه، لكنه لاعب ديناميكي للغاية”.

وإذا كان الفريق غير مُجهز بالصورة الكافية، استطرد تشابي: “العمل اليومي جيد جدًا، والجودة الفردية هائلة، رغم أنني كنت أعلم ذلك مسبقًا، الآن حان وقت العمل، أنا أكن احترامًا كبيرًا وأُقدّر كثيرًا ما أنجزه كارلو، المدرب الأكثر تتويجًا، لكننا الآن نبدأ مرحلة جديدة، وستكون بطريقتنا الخاصة، ومع ذلك، أستلم فريقًا يمتلك قاعدة ممتازة”.

وأصر: “نعمل على هذا المشروع منذ اليوم الأول، وأنا سعيد جدًا بتشكيلة الفريق، وبالصفقات الجديدة، هويسن وترينت لاعبان رائعان، من النوع الذي لا يحتاج إلى الكثير من التدريب أو الشرح النظري، بل يتعلمون بسرعة، إنها بداية لمرحلة جديدة، وسنبدأها غدًا”.

وعن تصريحات جالاردو مدرب ريفر بليت بإن تعاقد ريال مدريد مع ماستانتونو أضرّ بالفريق الإرجنتيني، رد تشابي: “حسنًا، شاهدتُ المباراة، 3-1 وأداءً رائعًا، لم أرَهم يعانون كثيرًا (يبتسم)”.

وبشأن تصريحات أنشيلوتي الذي قال إن على اللاعبين الشباب “الجلوس على مقاعد البدلاء”، ومدى اتفاقه معها، علّق: “عمليات التأقلم تحتاج إلى وقتها، لوكا، على سبيل المثال، بدأ تدريجيًا وتطور مع الوقت، أردا، إندريك… كلها عمليات طبيعية، في هذا العام الثاني سيبدأون في الدخول أكثر، كل شيء يسير بطريقة طبيعية”.

وعن تواجد كارفاخال وأرنولد، أكد: “بالنسبة لأي مدرب، من الرائع أن يملك لاعبين بهذا المستوى في مركز واحد، ترينت يتمتع بمرونة أكبر في الملعب… ونحن متحمسون لعودة كارفاخال، لكن يمكنني القول إن تأثير ترينت حتى الآن كان رائعًا، هذه المسألة تُعد صداعًا جميلًا”.

وحول مستوى الفرق البرازيلية، أصر: “لم يفاجئوني، يقدمون مستوى رائعًا بالفعل، سيكونون خصومًا صعبين، وكعادتهم يُثبتون قدراتهم دائمًا في البطولات العالمية، هذه البطولة جديدة على الجميع”.

وأتم: “صحيح أن كأس العالم للمنتخبات كبير، لكن الآن يمكننا أن نجعل من هذه البطولة شيئًا عظيمًا أيضًا، لأنها تجمع عالم كرة القدم كله، السعودية، المكسيك، النمسا… بطولة فيها الكثير من العناصر المشوقة، نحن نركّز كثيرًا على أوروبا ونعتقد أنها كل شيء، لكن هذا اعتقاد خاطئ تمامًا، فهناك فرق رائعة خارجها، وما نشاهده في هذه الأيام أكبر دليل”.

Positivity, excitement and optimism. Those are just three of the words associated with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal reign.

However, arguably for the first time since this project really started to motor, a sense of negativity has crept in.

Arteta’s side have enjoyed an interesting summer. The likes of Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres are standout purchases but something is missing, notably on the left.

With Manchester City and Liverpool strengthening again, spending mega bucks, it really does feel as though the title is far away again.

Still, Arsenal did go to Old Trafford on the Premier League’s opening weekend and win 1-0. It’s not always been a happy hunting ground so Arteta’s men will take the three points and swiftly move on.

Arsenal were resilient and staunch in their efforts to claim the victory but it certainly wasn’t all plain sailing, not least for debutant Gyokeres.

What went wrong for Gyokeres on Arsenal debut

After scoring his first goal for the club in their 3-0 pre-season win over Bilbao a week ago, there were high hopes for Gyokeres.

That’s not forgetting the fact he scored 54 goals in 52 games for Sporting last term either.

Yet, in Manchester on Sunday, Gyokeres cut a frustrated figure, someone who struggled to get into the game and was let down by his teammates.

The Swede regularly burst into the channels and on a frequent basis wasn’t played the ball.

Those beside him, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, only produced two key passes as the club’s big summer signing was starved of any service.

So, after failing to have a single shot on goal within an hour of his debut, he was withdrawn from the action to loud jeers from the home crowd, with Kai Havertz brought on in his place.

As Football.London’s Tom Canton noted, the centre forward ‘struggled to get into the game in the first half and was limited in terms of service and touches.’

So room for improvement, but he wasn’t the worst player on the away side.

The Arsenal player who was worse than Gyokeres

Speaking of the forward line, it was a poor day at the office for Arsenal’s wingers.

This is significant because it’s an area of the squad that Andrea Berta and Co have been trying to improve this summer.

Noni Madueke has joined from Chelsea but there’s a cry from supporters to sign someone of the quality of Eberechi Eze or Rodrygo.

Well, those cries will only have grown louder after Martinelli’s ineffective showing on Sunday afternoon.

The Brazilian was handed a 4/10 rating by the Standard, who wrote that there was a ‘familiar issue – no conviction in the final third.’

Last season, that was also very much the case for Martinelli and there has no improvement over pre-season and into the full season.

This is a big worry, particularly if Berta doesn’t sign another winger between now and the deadline.

The numbers paint a grim picture of just how poor the 24-year-old was. He managed just one shot – a tame effort right at the goalkeeper.

Furthermore, he only attempted one dribble that ended up being unsuccessful, had one key pass, didn’t make a cross and only completed three passes before he was hooked on the hour.

To make matters worse, Martinelli had just 14 touches, 33 fewer than David Raya. He also won just 50% of his duels.

In all honesty, there wasn’t much that the wide player got right, with one moment summing up his last few years.

As Arsenal aimed to break through the centre of the pitch, the Brazil international looked to swing a ball out to the left-hand side of the field but dinked it right out of play.

If that’s a sign of things to come, then Arsenal need to sign a replacement instantly. Irrespective of their activity in the window, either Leandro Trossard or Madueke must replace him for the game with Leeds United next weekend.

Celtic could now sign a summer transfer target for a “relatively small fee” this summer, in a potential boost for Brendan Rodgers.

Royal Antwerp forward Michel-Ange Balikwisha has been heavily linked with a move to Parkhead before the summer transfer window slams shut, with an agreement even reportedly in place.

The 24-year-old has met with the club over a move to Celtic this summer, and it looks increasingly like it is a matter of time until his move is made official, with a medical pencilled in for this week.

Balikwisha would be just what the doctor ordered for Celtic, in terms of providing Rodgers with extra firepower, aiding their Champions League push and ensuring that they are once again crowned Scottish Premiership champions in 2025/26.

It looks as though the Hoops may not be done there, though, with another attacking player now mentioned as a strong option for them over the next week.

Celtic could sign Calvin Stengs on the cheap

According to Football Insider, Celtic could sign Feyenoord winger Calvin Stengs for a “relatively small fee” and thus afford him as well as Balikwisha this week, with journalist Pete O’Rourke sharing the latest.

“We know that Celtic are looking to bring in a new wideman. Stengs is a player that has emerged on Celtic’s radar – he had a difficult season for Feyenoord, a few injury problems, so that may be a concern for Celtic.

“He’s into the final two years of his contract with Feyenoord, so could be available for a cut-price fee this summer. Celtic are looking at that, seeing there could be real potential to land a former Dutch international for a relatively small fee with a bid imminent.”

The £5m-rated Stengs would be such an eye-catching signing for Celtic and Rodgers, arriving at the peak of his powers and providing impressive levels of end product in the final third.

The 26-year-old has already scored three goals in just eight caps for the Netherlands, looking to be a key figure heading into the 2026 World Cup next summer, and 54 goal contributions in 119 Eredivisie appearances is an impressive return.

Most adept in an attacking midfield role, Stengs can also do a good job on the right wing, with such versatility a bonus for Rodgers, and there is no reason why he couldn’t hit the ground running from the off.

Parker positive despite Burnley defeat

The Clarets endured a sobering start to life back in the top flight on Saturday afternoon, losing 3-0 away to Tottenham and being reminded of the step up in class from the Championship.

That said, Burnley manager Scott Parker still managed to take some positives from the result, saying there was plenty that he liked from him team in north London.

“I thought there were plenty of positives to take, despite the defeat. We started slowly, we were really under pressure, but then after they got their noses in front, I thought we really grew into the game. There was a real impetus about us, we played on the front foot and looked a real threat, our reaction and endeavour was superb.

“The clinical and ruthless nature of the Premier League was then there for everyone to see just before the hour. We had two massive, massive chances, where we just weren’t ruthless enough, and then they go up the other end, create a half-chance, and double their lead with a world class finish. They’re the fine margins – that’s this division really.”

New signings between now and the end of August wouldn’t go amiss for Burnley and a new update has now emerged regarding one potential addition.

Burnley hold talks to sign defender

According to TEAMtalk, Burnley have contacted the agents of FC Copenhagen defender Gabriel Pereira, as they look to strike a summer deal for him. Parker “is keen to bring in more defensive reinforcements”, following the loss to Spurs.

The Clarets are battling Sunderland for the centre-back’s signature, among others, but it looks as though they will both be unsuccessful in their quest to snap him up. That’s because the report also states that the 25-year-old “wants to stay” at his current club for now.

There is no need to get carried away after a 3-0 loss to a Spurs side who are the reigning Europa League winners, with Burnley giving a good account of themselves at times.

That said, defensive additions are key, in terms of ensuring the Clarets have enough options at the back, and Pereira could be an astute signing.

The Brazilian has become an important player for Copenhagen, winning the Danish Superliga and cup last season, and he also scored against Chelsea in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Embora tenha elogiado a torcida corintiana, Gabigol tem conversas avançadas para renovar seu contrato com a equipe carioca.

Following the Saints’ relegation from the Premier League, Dibling has been expected to leave the club, and Everton have emerged as one of the most interested parties, with David Moyes’ side having multiple approaches knocked back.

It has been widely reported the 19-year-old is training away from the rest of the squad, amid interest from the Toffees, and reporter Sami Mokbel has recently suggested the youngster could be heading for the exit door this summer.

Mokbel said: “The information varies depending on who you speak to. If you speak to people closer to Everton, they will tell you that the deal has reached an impasse and Southampton are asking for far too much.

“If you speak to those closer to the South Coast, there is a realisation there that maybe Tyler Dibling’s time is coming to an end.”

Amid the major doubts surrounding the starlet’s future at St. Mary’s, Will Still’s side have now set their sights on a replacement, and a report from Football Insider has revealed they have opened talks over a deal for West Bromwich Albion star Tom Fellows.

Fellows has been lined up as a direct replacement for Dibling, who has been the subject of a £40m offer from Everton, and a deal may be relatively inexpensive, with reports from elsewhere revealing the Baggies could look to hold out for just £10m.

Losing one of their prized assets will, of course, be a bitter pill to swallow for the Saints, should Dibling complete a move elsewhere, but there are plenty of signs the West Brom winger could be the perfect replacement.

Most notably, the Solihull-born winger chalked up some very impressive attacking numbers in the 2024-25 campaign, picking up four goals and 14 assists in the Championship alone, leading to some very high praise from teammate Karlan Grant.

  Differences between Ronaldo and Messi revealed

  Meulensteen has now shared his thoughts on the differences between the two superstars. Speaking to football betting site BetVictor, Meulensteen said: “It takes its toll, obviously. They're different players, different physical specimens as well. Cristiano Ronaldo is an athlete, 187 cm or something, and more than anything, as everybody knows, he has looked after himself unbelievably well. I'm not saying that Lionel Messi hasn't, I'm sure he has, but they're just physically different kinds of players. 

  "Messi has always wanted the ball to feet, and then his magic started with a lot of turns and twists and explosive runs. But I think it's just possibly nothing else other than a genetic difference between them. They're both exceptional players that have brought absolute beauty to the game. 

  "We are so fortunate to have grown up to have those two players going toe to toe with each other because that competition has brought the best out of them. 100% that rivalry, but also that mutual respect that they have for each other. But Cristiano, physically, he's in such a good state. I can't see anything else than just some genetic difference, and obviously maybe Messi starts to feel it a little bit more. You know, the day-to-day routines of training and recovery and all this and that."

  The longevity of both players means the duo may well feature at World Cup 2026. Meulensteen certainly expects Messi to feature in North America, Canada and Mexico as Argentina aim to defend the title they won in Qatar in 2022. He added: "At some point, more things start to ache. It takes longer to recover. I would still expect to see Messi at the World Cup."
