Manchester United have won the race to sign highly-rated RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, reportedly reaching an 'agreement in principle' for a deal worth €85 million (£73.7m/$100m). The Slovenia international had been pursued by Newcastle United, but ultimately chose Old Trafford as his preferred destination, with medical tests now expected to follow soon.

WHAT HAPPENED?
CARY, N.C. – U.S. men's national team legend Jozy Altidore said he has no issue with Christian Pulisic requesting not to be a part of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup roster. Rather, the 35-year-old is excited to see the group that there for the tournament, ahead of what he describes as a "massive opportunity" for the national team program.
Speaking at The Soccer Tournament 2025, where he is coaching AFC Bournemouth, Altidore reflected on the AC Milan star’s absence and what it could mean for the USMNT heading into the continental competition.
"Listen, this is an opportunity for the team," Altidore told GOAL. "No one player replaces Christian, and if he needed the time off, he needed the time off. This is a chance for the group to come together and really step up with some big absences."
Altidore also shared his excitement about the next year of the footballing calendar for the country. Beginning in June 2025, the CONCACAF Gold Cup and FIFA Club World Cup will both be held in the U.S., and come next summer, the FIFA World Cup will follow in 2026, with matches played in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
"It’s a massive opportunity for soccer in this country, and a chance at a real rebirth for the game here. I’m excited, fans are excited, and the players are excited," he said. "It’s a real opportunity and I’m looking forward to it."

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The U.S. roster for the Gold Cup this summer will feature plenty of new faces, amid an injury crisis, along with a handful of regulars being unavailable. In addition to Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, and Gio Reyna are unavailable due to the Club World Cup, while teammate of Pulisic's, Yunus Musah, is absent due to "personal reasons."
In the striker position, the U.S. is particularly going to be tested in the competition. Both Ricardo Pepi and Folarin Balogun are missing out due to injury, and after a tough performance in the March Nations League, Josh Sargent was left out of the squad this summer.
An area where Altidore excelled for the USMNT for over a decade, he believes it's a wide-open race at the moment – but with the group available for Mauricio Pochettino this summer, it's all about opportunity. MLS strikers Patrick Agyemang and Brian White are joined by uncapped 20-year-old prospect Damion Downs, Coventry's Haji Wright and FC Utrecht's Paxten Aaronson.
"The striker position is an interesting one," Altidore said. "It’s hard and not easy to play. There is a group of talented guys there, and any one of them could emerge. I’m looking forward to seeing them all."
WHAT ALTIDORE SAID ABOUT TST
Altidore was offered the coaching role with Bournemouth at the 7v7 tournament in North Carolina, thanks to U.S. international Tyler Adams – who plays for the senior team in England – and co-owner Michael B. Jordan, via a personal training initiative they collaborated on.
"The conversation stemmed from all of us at Sogility – a soccer tech training facility – and so Bournemouth was interested in partnering with businesses that are trying to push the envelope in soccer, and we started discussing how we could work together on this," Altidore explained. "There were some conversations with Michael's team, that's who I got in touch with originally, and he's getting more and more into soccer, so there was a lot of synergy there. Our groups are partnered on a couple of other ventures, so that just made a lot of sense."

WHAT NEXT?
The USMNT begins their June slate of matches with an international friendly against Turkey on Saturday as part of their preparation for the Gold Cup.
Altidore, meanwhile, will look to lead Bournemouth out of the Group Stage at TST into the knockouts as they hunt for the $1M prize in the 7v7 competition.
Glasgow Rangers delivered arguably their most impressive display so far under the Philippe Clement regime on the weekend, defeating Hearts 5-0 at Ibrox.
The win saw them temporarily extend their lead to five points in the Premiership table over Celtic, although the Parkhead outfit did secure victory against Motherwell on Sunday.
The Light Blues face another tricky test this evening as they travel to Ayr to face a resurgent Kilmarnock side who have already defeated the Gers this term.
That was way back in August under different circumstances, but their plastic pitch is always difficult to play on and Clement’s men will have to be at their very best to secure all three points.
One player will be missing, however, as Todd Cantwell is expected to be unavailable for the next few weeks due to injury.
The latest on Todd Cantwell's injury
During the recent 3-0 win over St Johnstone, Cantwell was targeted by the opposition for more than his fair share of rough challenges, and he was eventually taken off after just 60 minutes clutching his hamstring.
While speaking to the media prior to the clash against Hearts, Clement delivered the injury news no supporter wanted to hear, saying: “Todd Cantwell will be out for a few weeks which is disappointing but that is football.”
Todd Cantwell
This means he is likely to miss the Europa League clashes against Benfica in March, along with a couple of Premiership games, and it represents a big blow, especially judging by his recent performances.
Todd Cantwell’s season in numbers
Under Michael Beale, Cantwell did not start the season as well as anticipated, registering only one assist under the Englishman before he was sacked in late September.
The former Norwich City gem was disrupted by a knee injury which he suffered against Celtic, having to wait until the start of November to score his first goal of the season.
Since being moved back into his preferred number ten slot, the 25-year-old has been wonderful. He has scored five league goals since Christmas Eve, has created four big chances, averages 1.6 key passes per game and has succeeded with 1.1 successful dribbles per game in the top flight this term.
There is no doubt Cantwell has been one of Clement’s main attacking threats of late, but they did not seem to miss his presence against Hearts, netting five without reply.
Tom Lawrence was utilised in the attacking midfield role, yet with a plastic pitch perhaps not being the best surface to play on, might Clement relocate another player?
Tom Lawrence
Mohamed Diomande only joined the club last month, yet his performances so far could tempt the Belgian manager into moving him into a more advanced role against Kilmarnock tonight.
What Rangers paid to sign Mohamed Diomande
With the squad thinning due to injury issues, Clement looked to strengthen during the January transfer window and he made three new signings.
Both Fabio Silva and Oscar Cortes arrived, and it has given the club a boost going forward, but the move for Diomande was certainly a surprise, especially with the depth Clement has in the midfield.
The 22-year-old signed a loan deal with an obligation to buy for a fee in excess of £4.3m and the move certainly looks like it has paid off already.
Mohammed Diomande
Clement will be keen to establish a serious player trading model at the Ibrox side over the coming years, buying young talent for cheap before selling on to make a profit, and Diomande certainly fits the specifications for this.
Despite playing only five games for the club thus far, the Ivorian has taken to Scottish football with ease, and he could be relocated tonight in place of Cantwell.
Mohamed Diomande’s Rangers statistics
The player was introduced to the first team gradually, having not played in a few weeks following his arrival, with Clement giving him just five and 11 minute cameos during his first two Premiership appearances for the club.
He was given his first start for the Gers against Ayr United in the Scottish Cup and ran the show against the second-tier outfit, which led to Clement unleashing him against St Johnstone in the league a few days later.

In a tense opening half, Diomande opened up his account for the club with an excellent goal to give the Light Blues a one-goal advantage heading into the break, and they eventually won 3-0.
He also won 100% of his ground duels against the Saints, while making two key passes, three tackles and one interception as he impressed for the club.
Better was to come against Hearts last weekend. The youngster scored the first goal of the game after just two minutes, calming a nervous Ibrox crowd, and it was yet another well-taken goal.
Once again, the midfielder won all of his ground duels along with succeeding with 100% of his dribble attempts, and it showcases his ability to not only be a reliable attacking outlet, but also be effective when his side don’t have the ball.
This should give Clement the licence to unleash the promising gem in a more advanced slot behind either Silva or Cyriel Dessers tonight.
Prior to his arrival in Glasgow, analyst John Walker hailed the talented midfielder, saying he was an “aggressive tackle and carrier” along with stating that he “absolutely loves the physical nature of midfield” and he has showcased these qualities already despite joining a month ago.
Securing all three points is the only thing that matters this evening for Rangers, as it will allow them to maintain their two-point advantage over Celtic in the race for the title.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
While Cantwell’s injury is not great, Clement must be buoyed by the fact he has a plethora of options available to him that can fill the void, with Diomande being the obvious example.
He has clearly shown in his previous five matches how much of a positive impact he can have in this Gers side and with a tricky encounter in Ayrshire approaching tonight, Diomande could well be the game-changer that sees the club head back up to Glasgow with three points in the bag.

Valladolid boss laments 'pitiful' display
Raphinha inspires Barcelona victory
Newly-promoted Pucela winless in three
WHAT HAPPENED?
The odds weren't in Valladolid's favour when they made the trip to Barcelona on Saturday, but a 7-0 defeat was far worse than expected. The score was 3-0 to Hansi Flick's side by half-time and Raphinha completed his hat-trick as the hosts ran riot in the second half.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Real Valladolid secured promotion back to La Liga at the first time of asking last season, but this was a humbling defeat. Pezzolano's side had made a solid account of themselves beforehand, though, beating Espanyol in their season-opener and producing an impressive defensive display at Real Madrid before two late goals worsened the scoreline. The 41-year-old's honesty will likely soften the blow to Valladolid and their supporters as they look to remain in the Spanish top-flight.
WHAT PEZZOLANO SAID
"I want to apologise to the supporters and the city, they don't deserve it. We didn't compete today. It was pitiful. There's no other word, there are no excuses. We put the best we have on the pitch and we couldn't compete."

WHAT NEXT FOR VALLADOLID?
Pezzolano will certainly be pleased to have away games against Real Madrid and Barcelona out of the way. The international break gives the Uruguayan the chance to assess the opening weeks of the season ahead of Pucela's meeting with Celta Vigo on September 15.
The BCCI is mulling a truncated domestic season in 2020-21, with the men starting from November 19 with the T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and ending with the Ranji Trophy on March 10. The tentative plan, seen by ESPNcricinfo, is yet to be ratified, but has no 50-overs competitions – neither Vijay Hazare Trophy nor Deodhar Trophy – in a season that also has no place for the first-class Duleep Trophy and the Irani Cup.Senior women’s cricket will feature both the One Day League and the T20 League, albeit with fewer games than the 2019-20 season, and is scheduled between November 1 and April 12. Challenger Trophies across all categories – men and women, senior and junior – find no place in the proposal.!function(){“use strict”;window.addEventListener(“message”,(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[“datawrapper-height”])for(var e in a.data[“datawrapper-height”]){var t=document.getElementById(“datawrapper-chart-“+e)||document.querySelector(“iframe[src*='”+e+”‘]”);t&&(t.style.height=a.data[“datawrapper-height”][e]+”px”)}}))}();
This news follows on from a board official telling ESPNcricinfo last week that a “priority list” of tournaments was being made with the Ranji Trophy on top.As per the proposed plan, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will be held first, starting ten days after the IPL, from November 19, ending on December 7. The Ranji Trophy is then scheduled to begin from December 13 and will go on till March 10, just before the scheduled 2021 IPL.Like in the past, the order of tournaments means that players could effectively be using the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament to impress the IPL franchises ahead of an auction, which in this case is scheduled to be held in December 2020 or January 2021.A zonal system was originally being thought about for the Ranji Trophy, with one city from each zone hosting teams across four or five venues, but that format isn’t to be found in the proposal. There will be five groups. The top 24 teams of last season will be split into groups A, B, and C, with the top two from each qualifying automatically to the quarter-finals. Among the third-placed teams, the team with the highest “quotient” will also go through. The eighth quarter-final spot will be decided after a playoff between the winners of Group D, which will have up to eight teams, and Group E, which consists of the six teams from the north-east.The bottom teams from groups A, B, and C will be relegated to Group D, with the top three teams from Group D going the other way. The bottom placed team from Group D will go down to Group E, and the winner from Group E will compete in Group D next season. Teams in each group will play on four grounds across two nearby cities and each team will travel “at least once, at most thrice” between venues. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the women’s T20 league, 38 teams will be divided into six groups and each group’s matches will be held on two grounds in one city.A total of 2036 games, across various age groups in the men’s and women’s categories, were played during the 2019-20 season. In normal circumstances, the season would have started in July-August and run till around March. That number will fall to 1183 next season based on this new proposal, which is still contingent on how the pandemic situation plays out in India.
Whilst there are few certainties on Merseyside after this season, Liverpool fans will be happy to see one of its star players look set to commit their future to the club.
Liverpool braced for big changes this summer
As the looming departure of Jürgen Klopp finally settles in for Reds' fans, the club look ready for their biggest transition since the German took over in 2015. With the Anfield outfit still competing in four competitions both domestically and on the continent, FSG will have to juggle immediate success on the pitch with ensuring an equally as bright future.
Liverpool have already scouted "incredible" £80m star ahead of the summer
This would be the perfect start to the Reds’ post-Klopp era.
ByTom Cunningham Mar 1, 2024
The search for a successor in the dugout has seen Liverpool make not-so-subtle attempts to tempt Xabi Alonso away from the high-flying Bayer Leverkusen. However, the Spaniard has yet to speak out about what his future holds. Turning their attention away from Alonso, FSG have looked towards other names to fill the void left by the German.
Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool beat Chelsea in the 2022 Carabao Cup final.
FSG have also had to address the lack of a Sporting Director after Jorg Schmadtke departed at the end of the January window, leaving his desk vacant for the remainder of the season. Unsuccessful attempts to beat Manchester United to Dan Ashworth has left the Reds with a lot of work to do off the pitch before the end of the season.
Superstar trio, Vigril Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent-Alexander Arnold are all set to see their contracts expire in the summer of 2025. Whilst the club attempt to offer new deals to these players, the club are confident that at least one of their star players will be staying at the club beyond this summer.
Robertson to stay at Anfield
As first reported by Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, Liverpool are “confident” that Andrew Robertson will remain at the club for the foreseeable future. Whilst the Scotsman's contract is not set to expire until 2026, Liverpool are eager to tie down the defender with other clubs circling for his signature.
goncalo-inacio-andrew-robertson-liverpool-opinion
O'Rourke states that German giants Bayern Munich are interested in Robertson if they are to lose Alphonso Davies, who has reportedly agreed a deal in principle and personal terms with Real Madrid.
It was a modest £8million fee that first saw Robertson join the Reds, leaving Hull City after their relegation in 2017. Since arriving at Anfield, the left back has become a fan favourite, making 283 appearances across seven seasons at the club. The Scottish international has enjoyed major success during his time with Liverpool, lifting both the Champions League and Premier League as well as numerous other domestic trophies.
Striking up a partnership with right back Trent Alexander-Arnold, the pair have been famous on Merseyside for their crossing abilities. The duo currently sit joint top for all-time Premier League assists for defenders, a testament to their quality in their respective positions.
With few guarantees going into the post-Klopp era at Anfield, securing the future of Robertson could go a long way in reassuring fans that the success does not stop with the German's departure.
Glasgow Rangers suffered a shock defeat at Ibrox this afternoon as the chance to go five points clear at the top of the Premiership eluded them.
The Gers had to come back from a one-goal deficit in midweek to secure a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock, and they conceded an early goal once again today, as Motherwell drew first blood.
Philippe Clement’s men had plenty of chances to grab an equaliser in the first half, but failed to do so and another big team talk was required.
James Tavernier scored a trademark penalty after an effort by Cyriel Dessers was ruled out, yet the Steelmen scored with 15 minutes remaining, and they secured all three points in Glasgow.
The defence has been rock solid in recent months, but both John Souttar and Connor Goldson were off it today.
Goldson and Souttar's performance in numbers vs Motherwell
Goldson and Souttar were bullied by Motherwell attacker Theo Blair throughout the encounter, with the forward opening the scoring in the first ten minutes.
Between them, the duo lost possession 25 times throughout the match and never truly looked comfortable as Well had a solid grip on the game, especially during the latter stages.
Connor Goldson
It was not just the defence which let Clement down, however, as the club had more than enough chances to win the tie but could not convert several excellent chances.
Once again, it was Dessers who missed various opportunities in front of goal and while he may have 16 goals this term, he has also missed 20 big chances in the top flight, which explains everything.
Cyriel Dessers’ statistics vs Motherwell
The Nigerian striker was recalled to the starting XI in place of Fabio Silva from the midweek win, and despite looking keen to make an impact, he failed to create any meaningful chances for either himself or the team.
Not only that, but he also made fewer passes than Jack Butland, completing just 11 during his time on the pitch (Butland made 12) along with failing to get a shot on target, succeeding with zero dribble attempts, taking just 29 touches and winning only one duel.

It was another dismal performance for a player who was expected to score goals aplenty for the Light Blues, but when the pressure was on, Dessers failed to turn up.
The 29-year-old also had a goal ruled out due to him straying offside, which occurred three times during the contest, and if the Gers are going to win the league this term, they need to find someone who leads the line more effectively.
Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers.
There were always going to be bumps in the road during the final few months of the season and the fact that Rangers are still in a title race proves how well Clement has dragged the Gers back from the doldrums.
Motherwell were better than the Ibrox side this afternoon, no doubt about that. The question now is, how will the squad respond when they face Benfica on Thursday evening?
Legspinner heads to Nepal for an ODI series while they await confirmation of Haris Rauf’s return
Alex Malcolm26-Jan-2020The Melbourne Stars have been dealt another major blow on the eve of the BBL finals with legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane unavailable because of international duty while they also face a nervous wait on Haris Rauf’s availability.Lamichhane was believed to be available for the whole season, but he informed the Stars last week that he would not be around for the finals as he heads home to Nepal for a tri-nations ODI series with Oman and the USA which forms part of the qualification pathway for the 2023 50-over World Cup.Rauf is currently playing for Pakistan in a three-match T20I series against Bangladesh in Pakistan which concludes on Monday and was expected to be back in Australia for the Stars’ BBL qualifier on Friday at the MCG. He has missed the past four games of which the Stars have lost three. However, the Stars believe there is a chance Rauf could be held back in Pakistan to potentially play in the first Test which starts on February 7 in Rawalpindi although he was not named among the probables for that series. The Stars will also be without opener Hilton Cartwright for the finals due to a broken finger. They won 10 of their first 11 matches of the tournament to guarantee a double chance at reaching the final but have lost three in a row including to the Brisbane Heat on Saturday. The Stars were confident on Friday that Rauf would return but coach David Hussey conceded after the loss to the Heat that it is not guaranteed.”He might get picked to play Test cricket [but it’s] not confirmed as yet. We’d like him back,” Hussey told reporters. “We’ll see what happens there. We’re still working behind the scenes.”It’s great that he started off his journey playing for the Melbourne Stars and now he’s representing his country. I’m rapt for him, great person, and hopefully, we do get him back for the qualifier.”Whatever he does, I hope he actually represents Pakistan for 100 Tests and 400 T20s and 150 one-day internationals. He’s brought a different dynamic to our group, he’s tried every game he’s played, he fields his butt off and he’s just fitted in the group perfectly.”Lamichhane’s loss is an even bigger blow to the dynamic of the Stars attack. He took 1 for 16 from four overs against the Heat and the Stars have bowled more spin than any other team in the BBL. The Stars spinners have bowled 25 more overs and taken 20 more wickets than the Melbourne Renegades who are second on that list but Lamichhane’s exit will force a rethink.”I’m always a big believer that spin is going to your friend throughout the tournament,” Hussey said. “It’s a fantastic strategy that we have that we might have to rejig a little bit. I must admit I didn’t deal with it too well when he told me he was leaving because he’s a quality person, a quality player and a big part of our plans to go deep into the tournament.”But when you get called up to international cricket, it should be celebrated. It was a couple of days of kicking cans about losing a great player but I’m pretty happy for him.”The Stars took a punt on unknown Pakistan quick Dilbar Hussain against the Heat and it backfired with the Lahore Qalandars development player conceding 56 runs from his four overs. But Hussey was prepared to stick with him and he will stay on as Lamichhane’s replacement even if Rauf returns.”It’s his first time at the MCG in front of a decent crowd representing a new team, his English is not great, he’s only arrived with the Stars in the last couple of days,” Hussey said.”Foreign conditions. I thought there was a lot to offer – 145kph away swingers, good slower ball, good fast bouncer, good control, good yorker. I think he’s got a pretty good future in the game. I think he’s going to ruffle a few feathers later on in the tournament.”
Sean Williams was named captain, while there was no place for PJ Moor or Ryan Burl in the Zimbabwean side

Among the five uncapped players is Charlton Tshuma, the pacer included after a bicep injury to Tendai Chatara ruled him out of the series. His domestic teammates Victor Nyauchi and Brian Mudzinganyama are also in line for a Test debut with opening batsman Kevin Kasuza and spinner Ainsley Ndlovu rounding out the rookies in the squad.ALSO READ: Lakmal returns, Kusal Perera dropped from Sri Lanka’s Test squadThe biggest exclusion, meanwhile, is that of PJ Moor, the wicketkeeper batsman among the mainstays of the Zimbabwean setup of late. In their most recent international game, he scored an unbeaten 60-ball 92 against Singapore in the last game of a T20I tri-series.Another omission that raised eyebrows was Ryan Burl’s, whose exploits in the Bangladesh Premier League, particularly with the ball, have garnered acclaim. A reputation for being an aggressive batsman may have done his chances more harm than good, even though of late, he told ESPNcricinfo he had been working to mould his game to first-class cricket. He will have to wait to add to the solitary Test cap he currently has, which came in the four-day Test against South Africa in 2017.Regis Chakabva is the wicketkeeper, just as he was for the Zimbabwe’s last Test series, a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh at the back end of 2018. There are more familiar names in the squad, with Brendan Taylor, Sikandar Raza, Craig Ervine, Donald Tiripano and Kyle Jarvis all included. Both Tests will be played at the Harare Sports Club, with the first starting on January 19. This will be Zimbabwe’s first taste of Test cricket in over a year, and the first Test played in Zimbabwe since October 2017, after financial woes played a large part in preventing Zimbabwe from hosting international cricket.
Bravo backed Pooran following his ball-tampering ban, saying the youngster is “far from that type of player”

Former West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo has called Nicholas Pooran’s attempts at altering the condition of the ball during West Indies’ third ODI against Afghanistan a “silly mistake”.”I know Pooran since he was 17 years old and he is not that type of player,” Bravo said on Thursday in Abu Dhabi where he will be playing in the T10 tournament as Maratha Arabians’ captain. “Yes, that (ball-tampering) happened, the evidence is there. He admitted to the offence, a breach of level 3 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct, and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Chris Broad. In his defence, the young batsman said it was an “isolated” incident, which would not be repeated as it was an “extreme error in judgment” on his part.Pooran will now miss the ongoing three-match T20I series against Afghanistan and the opening match of the subsequent exchanges against India.Bravo said Pooran needed to be given time to understand his mistake. “It is just a silly mistake on his part,” Bravo said. “He accepted it.
