Fabrizio Romano: Man United agree deal to sell gem on "permanent transfer"

Manchester United will trim their squad this month and could be about to let one gem leave Old Trafford, following on from already being in the final stages of losing another talented youngster this window, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

Man United's outgoings…

In terms of players coming through the door at Old Trafford, there really isn't that much to discuss as Manchester United are yet to finalise any signings this month. Outgoings have been the main focus so far at the Premier League giants and it is likely that Erik ten Hag will be keen to reduce his squad size further over the next few weeks.

Manchester United ready to trigger release clause to sign new midfielder

He’s piqued the interest of Old Trafford chiefs…

BySean Markus Clifford Jan 7, 2024

Speaking at an official Fans Forum last month, Red Devils' football director John Murtough hinted that several fringe players would leave to receive regular game time elsewhere, as he stated: "There will always be the possibility of deals around the edges of the squad, particularly in terms of finding opportunities for players who are not playing as much football as they would like."

Eintracht Frankfurt moved swiftly to sign Donny van de Beek on by the time January rolled around and his teammate Jadon Sancho has already departed to join Borussia Dortmund on a similar deal, notching an assist in his first appearance against Darmstadt.

Now, Romano has let it be known that Manchester United could now be set to let a prodigious talent walk through the exit door as Ten Hag's squad cull continues.

Mateo Mejia set to leave Manchester United…

According to transfer guru Romano, Manchester United's young winger Mateo Mejia is set to join Sevilla on a free transfer and official documentation of the deal will be processed next week. Taking to social media platform X, the Italian journalist has indicated that the Red Devils will insert a 25% release clause into his agreement.

Of course, Alvaro Fernandez is also nearing a loan move to Benfica, which will include an obligation to buy, a sell-on clause and an option to purchase him again from the Portuguese giants at some point in the future.

Zaragoza-born Mejia has made 12 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United's development side this campaign, registering three goals and five assists (Mejia statistics – Transfermarkt).

Despite the Red Devils' plight in the Premier League this campaign, Ten Hag doesn't seem too keen to introduce an influx of young stars and Mejia will now try to kickstart his senior career in Andalusia.

Kylian Mbappe addresses Vinicius Junior competition at Real Madrid as he sends definitive message to Carlo Ancelotti on his potential role in the team

Kylian Mbappe says he will play wherever Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti wants him to and hopes to feature alongside the "unique" Vinicius Junior.

  • Mbappe joins Madrid from PSG
  • Ready to be flexible for Ancelotti
  • Hails 'unique' Vinicius Junior
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Following his switch from Paris Saint-Germain to Madrid, the 25-year-old was presented to the Spanish giants' fans this week – with the Frenchman asked a host of questions about joining Los Blancos. Two of which involved where he would play and if he could link up well with left winger Vinicius Jr.

    WHAT KYLIAN MBAPPE SAID

The forward said at his unveiling presentation at Santiago Bernabeu: "I will play wherever the coach (Ancelotti) makes me play. In Paris, I played in all three positions. In Monaco too. The important thing is to be in good physical shape. The position I will play in is a detail."

He added on the Brazilian: "Vinicius is a unique player, a very great player. I will be very happy to play with him, as with all the other players. Great players know how to play together, I think. He has been incredible in recent seasons. It is up to me to adapt to the team. I will do it as quickly as possible to help the team win."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mbappe has, arguably, become one of the best players in the world from playing as a left-sided forward – both for PSG and France. But Vinicius is in Ballon d'Or contention after a stellar season in that position for Madrid. The 25-year-old Frenchman is happy to play as a centre-forward but whether or not they can gel together remains to be seen.

    WHAT NEXT?

After a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign with France, one which included him breaking his nose, Mbappe will begin his pre-season campaign in the coming weeks before stepping up preparations for his debut Madrid season in August.

Paine urges Brisbane crowd to treat Indians respectfully after Sydney fallout

“Leave the abuse at the gate and just respect the players, respect the game”

Daniel Brettig14-Jan-2021Australia’s captain Tim Paine has implored spectators at the Gabba this week to do what he says, rather than what he did on the final day at the SCG – treat the tourists with respect and refrain from the abuse that India faced in Sydney.”In terms of crowd behaviour – we don’t condone the abuse of anyone; let alone from the racial standpoint,” Paine said. “So we want people to come along to the Gabba, enjoy the game of cricket, support Australia, support India. Support the umpires if you like. But my suggestion is you leave the abuse at the gate and just respect the players, respect the game and have a good time.”Paine had put his hand up to apologise for calling R Ashwin a “d**khead” among other barbs on a heated final day of the third Test. But with the hosts having now left themselves needing to win in Brisbane to regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Paine could not have been much clearer in terms of drawing a distinction several of his predecessors have failed to make.Related

While he hopes the Gabba pitch will provide enough bounce to make the Indians uncomfortable, he wishes to see no echo of the SCG crowd behaviour that had moved Mohammad Siraj to stop play in order to point out his abusers.”Yeah it [the Gabba] is right up there, no doubt about that,” he said. “It’s a hard place to come and play cricket. Even for Tasmanians and Victorians to come here, it can be challenging to adjust to the different bounce and speed of the wicket. It’s something that has been to the advantage of Australian teams for a long time.”Paine has himself resolved to do likewise this week, and his pre-match rhetoric was a long way from that before the SCG, where he intimated that the series was coming to the boil in terms of tensions between the teams. However, he proved to be the only player on either side to substantially blow his top. At 36, Paine is self-aware enough to acknowledge that he plays his best cricket – which is as a wicketkeeper-batsman near the front rank – when in a focused frame of mind. If distracted as he was in Sydney on day five, he can revert to the very ordinary.”I just think I’ll handle it differently. I let it get under my skin, no doubt about that,” Paine said. “I’ve admitted that – but for me, it’s about rising above it and concentrating on what I’m doing and concentrating on leading my team, not worrying about what is going on with the other side. That’s the focus for us, we’ve spoken a lot this game about controlling what we can control and focusing more inwardly on ourselves. If we do that, we’ll be in a good position.”If you look throughout my whole career, I think I’ve done a pretty good job of staying relaxed for 99% of it. Again, it’s going back to how I play my best cricket [and] that’s [by] having a smile on my face, enjoying cricket for what it is – a game. And at times the other day, I certainly thought I got caught up in the moment. What I’ve been really good at is being able to step back – even just have a look around the crowd at times – and realise that at that very second, you’re captaining your country in a Test match.”It’s something I have always wanted to do, so remind yourself that way to enjoy it. Obviously, I’m going to compete very hard, that’s what I do. I want to win as much as anyone and I’m a competitive player but there’s a fine line. It’s the same with my batting – if I’m too tense and trying too hard to fight hard, then I am a pretty ordinary batter. If I look to go out, relax, have fun and look to score then I’m normally a much better player – it’s just a slight tweak in my mindset. It’s nothing new to me, it’s getting back to what I normally do.”As for the sharp criticisms of numerous in the commentariat – particularly in India and England – Paine said he had taken note. But he was careful not to respond in kind to his fellow Seven commentator Sunil Gavaskar, who let fly with a torrent of calls for Paine to be removed from the team by the national selectors after the ongoing series concluded.”I have [noted what Gavaskar said] but I’m not going into it, [and] getting into a back and forth with Sunny Gavaskar,” Paine said. “I don’t think I’m going to win that. Look, he’s entitled to his opinion. It doesn’t affect us one iota. Anything [that it is doing is] it’s adding to the Test match which is great. So Sunny can keep saying what he wants to say but at the end of the day, it’s absolutely got nothing to do with him.”The Australians lined up to defend Steven Smith this week after further aspersions were cast on his character for stump cam footage of him shadow-batting and re-marking centre during Rishabh Pant’s innings in Sydney. While Smith’s management gave a prepared statement to News Corp stating he was “shocked and disappointed”, Paine argued that several days on, these hurtful words would be melted down and remade as motivation for Australia’s No. 4.”He’s mentally very strong, very tough,” Paine said of Smith. “He knows that at times he’s going to be criticised,[and] he’s handled that pretty well. Not only this week, but since he’s come back into our side. If anything, he feeds off it. His statistics will speak for itself and we’ll see the best of Steve Smith this week.”And we set high expectations for ourselves and last week we didn’t meet them. And when you don’t do that, you leave yourself to criticism and we’ve copped that on the chin. We’re now looking forward to this Test match, [and] controlling what we can control, which has been our preparation and the way we go about this Test. So we can’t wait for tomorrow.”

Chris Sutton: Celtic "weaker" now than they were at the end of last season

Celtic legend Chris Sutton has raised concerns regarding the lack of transfer activity at Parkhead as the Hoops prepare to kick off their Scottish Premiership campaign on Sunday.

The Bhoys cruised to their 55th top flight title last season, leading rivals Rangers by a wide margin for practically the entire season, but it’s fair to say their summer hasn’t been quite such smooth sailing.

Star winger Nicolas Kuhn has left Glasgow to join Serie A side Como, along with experienced leadership figure Greg Taylor, who joined Greek side PAOK on a free transfer, although Kieran Tierney’s return should go some way to filling that void.

While the Hoops’ model has long been to develop and sell players like Kuhn before replacing them with cheaper, younger assets, the fact they are yet to make a marquee signing just days away from the beginning of the season is certainly a concern.

Sutton: Celtic need signings before Champions League qualifiers

Celtic will play the first leg of their Champions League qualifier on August 19-20, coming after league matches against St Mirren and Aberdeen and a cup clash with Falkirk, and Sutton believes Brendan Rodgers will be disappointed with the lack of business.

“If you look at the squad going into the season, it’s still a little bit light,” Sutton said in quotes shared by the Press Association.

“Brendan Rodgers, everything I’ve seen him hint and say, he feels the same. The fact that Brendan talked about ambition, he is always quite calculated in what he says and the words that he uses. I think that’s a little warning shot across the bows to say ‘we need to bring players in’.

Celtic's major signings so far: in pictures

“It’s fair to say the squad aren’t as strong right now as they were at the end of last season, and that’s not ideal. But there’s still plenty of time left in the transfer window.

“If you look back at last season, Celtic won the league in the first half of the campaign. They won 16 of their first 18 games, set off like a house on fire and there was real momentum going into the season from pre-season. It doesn’t quite feel like that at the moment.

“And they didn’t have the burden of the Champions League qualifiers last season and we know how enormous they are for the club.

“Celtic have been in this position before where they are signing players when the Champions League qualifiers have already begun. That’s not ideal.

Kasper Schmeichel

“You want players in so you can work with them, so they get the idea of the way that the team works. You don’t want them learning on the job when the Champions League has started and then missing out. We know how massive these games are. If you’re slightly off it, then you can get beat.”

He continued: “I’m not saying it’s easy. It’s never easy for Celtic and Rangers in the market they are in. We know what Celtic’s model is in terms of bringing players in.

Frimpong 2.0: Celtic have made approach to sign "impressive" £4m star

Celtic have made their move to sign a young starlet who could be Jeremie Frimpong 2.0.

ByDan Emery Jul 29, 2025

“We will find out at the end of next month whether Celtic have done enough. It’s OK for pundits to say ‘the board need to do more’ but at the end of next month if Celtic bring another few players in of quality which is going to lift the squad, all well and good.

“If not, then clearly people are going ask questions about why they are weaker now than they were at the end of last season.”

Ada Hegerberg exclusive: 'Little village' Lyon are far from finished as Ballon d'Or winner eyes another Women's Champions League title by taking down all-conquering Barcelona

The Norway forward is eyeing her seventh continental crown in Bilbao on Saturday as she insists rumours of the French club's demise are incorrect

Ada Hegerberg is one of the greats. At 28 years old, she’s a six-time Women’s Champions League winner, the competition’s all-time top goal-scorer and was the recipient of the first-ever Ballon d’Or Feminin. You get to those levels by being wonderfully talented and extremely committed to the sport, rather than focusing on any outside noise, but the only way she could’ve avoided talk of Lyon, the eight-time European champions, being written off over the years is by living under a rock.

Such suggestions were perhaps at their strongest in 2021, when Paris Saint-Germain dethroned OL in France for the first time and also knocked their bitter rivals out in the Champions League quarter-finals. But three years on, Lyon are still here and on Saturday, in the final against Barcelona, they are chasing a second European title in the past three seasons. Overall, it would be a record-extending ninth triumph.

All six that Hegerberg has been involved in over the past decade have presented their own unique challenges which Lyon have overcome by adapting and evolving, and that continues today. Having had the financial backing from the club early on to be successful, others have closed the gap, including Saturday’s opponents. Yet, OL remain right at the top of the game.

“That’s what I'm most proud of because every year, it's been like, 'Now they're off, now they're losing it', but here we are still and we're going to be pressing for many, many years,” Hegerberg tells GOAL. “I feel like Lyon has kind of been the big dog, but at the same time, it's becoming like a little village fighting against all these big clubs and their economy coming in, which is also cool in some way. We had an advantage, but we kind of lost that, even though we stayed at the top, and now we're fighting on a different level again. I enjoy it.”

Players don’t need extra motivation to win a European title, but it certainly adds a little fuel to the fire when a group of players who have been there and done it all multiple times over still get overlooked by some. “That's why you need to keep winning,” Hegerberg says, “to keep the record straight.”

Getty ImagesEurope's dominant side

When Lyon and Barca met in the final two years ago, there was a feeling that all the talk on the outside was about the Catalans, who were going for back-to-back titles after winning their first 12 months prior. Understandably, it didn’t sit particularly well with those representing a side which had won a seventh European crown only a year before that their achievements were being overlooked in some cases.

Two years on, as the two prepare to face off again, the narrative feels different, especially after Lyon beat Barca in the 2022 final. However, Hegerberg still doesn’t think OL's incredible dynasty is “talked about enough”.

“I know it feeds the club. I know it feeds the players,” she tells GOAL. “That's the most important thing. Every year, we start fresh. But we know the history we have and honestly, as long as it feeds us and makes us prepared to go again and again and again, that's what's most important. Let the football talk in the end, because that's what counts.”

AdvertisementGettyNew rivalry

Perhaps it is that recency bias that is so often seen in all sports, perhaps it is because Barca’s rise has coincided with a huge growth in visibility for the women’s game or perhaps it is because some people genuinely believed Lyon’s time was coming to an end. Regardless, the French giants certainly reminded everyone of their quality when they won the Champions League in 2022, and they have done the same again with their run to this year’s final.

Another match-up with Barca awaits, the third time they will meet on this grand stage, and it is Lyon with the psychological edge after triumphing in those previous two meetings. The Catalans are more experienced than ever in their bid to finally get one over OL, though, and you could argue that this is their best squad to date. It’s all playing its part in creating an incredible new rivalry, one which will push both teams to get even better. “At the moment, you can say it's the two best teams in Europe,” Hegerberg believes. “It's as easy as that.”

'Greats recognise greats'

Despite what might’ve been said on the outside over the years, there is plenty of respect between these two incredible teams, too. “I think greats recognise greats. It’s always been like that,” Hegerberg says.

That much was certainly apparent when the striker sat down with Barcelona winger Caroline Graham Hansen for UEFA’s latest episode. “You have a packed team with fantastic players,” Hegerberg told her Norway team-mate. “I have a long history with Irene Paredes, because she used to play in PSG. I feel like we had a lot of battles during the years. She’s very tough to play against, but we have a great relationship outside the pitch, as it should be.”

“I've never talked with Selma Bacha but I've played against her a lot and it's always super tough,” Graham Hansen responded, previewing the battle with the Lyon full-back. “I love how she plays. I will probably face her one-on-one the whole game.”

“I catch up with Caro during the season,” Hegerberg tells GOAL. “We like to re-watch our games. But obviously, from both sides, before a game like this, we don't speak at all, which is completely normal and that's how it should be. Then we promised each other one thing, that the loser gets an assist or two from the other, hopefully, in the national-team break. But now it's all about winning for the respective teams and that is all that counts at the moment.

“She's had a top season,” she adds of the Barca winger. “Let's hope that she's not in the best form of her life on Saturday! But I'm happy for her because she's been brilliant.”

GettySecond home

Over the years, there have been plenty of rumours suggesting that Hegerberg could even join Graham Hansen in Barcelona, with the Catalans reportedly holding interest in the striker on a number of occasions. However, all speculation was put to rest last month when the 28-year-old signed a new three-year deal in Lyon.

“I felt like I wasn't done in Lyon,” Hegerberg explains. “The most important thing was for me to be in a place where I feel I can get the best out of myself and win as many titles as possible. There was no doubt from the beginning. It took some time to get where we wanted but I must say I have a huge amount of gratefulness towards Michele [Kang, majority owner] and Vincent Ponsot [CEO of OL Feminin] who basically made it impossible for me to even consider something else, because they showed a will to keep me that made it clear to me that I'm here to stay another three years, which is crazy. That means almost my whole career in Lyon – and then we'll see after that.”

KKR grapple with Russell's bowling form as RCB receive Steyn boost

Also, question mark remains over Russell’s fitness after blow to the shoulder during training

The Preview by Ankur Dhawan18-Apr-20195:30

Dasgupta: Gill batting up the order can give KKR the spark

Big Picture

Kolkata Knight Riders’ over dependence on Andre Russell is no state secret. In fact, it’s more by design than accident. However, it is around the allrounder Russell that their team was built. The problem here is Russell, the bowler. He has conceded over ten runs an over, without completing his quota of four overs even once this season.Against Chennai Super Kings at home, Russell leaked 16 in a momentum-shifting third over. Wickets through the middle kept Knight Riders in the contest but the lack of a fast-bowling option against the likes of Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja hurt them in the end.Russell’s fitness remains the other issue for Knight Riders; having hobbled around and off fields earlier in the tournament, he suffered another injury scare during practice in the lead-up to Friday’s game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, but remains in contention to play. Regardless, perhaps it’s time for Knight Riders to look at Russell purely as a batsman and pick another seamer, either at the expense of a batsman or a spinner, to give themselves a better chance of restricting oppositions. Kerala seamer Sandeep Warrier could come in, should that happen. They are up against a side that knows a thing or two about losses piling up, but with playoff qualification only a distant theoretical possibility now, Royal Challengers unwittingly become the danger team you don’t want to lose to. If the threat still seems too meek, the availability of the newly signed Dale Steyn should change that, after coach Ashish Nehra described the chances of the pacer playing as “very high”.

Form guide

  • Knight Riders: lost to Super Kings by five wickets, lost to Capitals by seven wickets, lost to Super Kings by seven wickets (most recent matches first)

  • Royal Challengers: lost to Mumbai by five wickets, beat Kings XI by eight wickets, lost to Capitals by four wickets

In the news

Andre Russell has suffered another injury scare; he took a blow to the shoulder in practice two days before the match, and went for X-rays on match eve. While captain Dinesh Karthik confirmed that Russell remains in the team’s plans for Royal Challengers, he said a final call would be taken closer to the match. West Indies, too, would be keeping their fingers crossed on this front, given they are due to name their World Cup squad on April 23.

Previous meeting

Andre Russell belted 48 off 13 balls as Knight Riders equalled their own record of chasing the most runs in the last three overs: 53. Astonishingly, they did this with five balls to spare.

Likely XIs

Kolkata Knight Riders: 1 Chris Lynn, 2 Sunil Narine, 3 Nithish Rana, 4 Robin Uthappa, 5 Dinesh Karthik (wk, capt), 6 Shubman Gill, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Piyush Chawla, 9 Kuldeep Yadav/Sandeep Warrier, 10 Prasidh Krishna, 11 Harry Gurney/Lockie FergusonRoyal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Parthiv Patel (wk), 2 Virat Kohli (capt), 3 AB de Villiers, 4 Moeen Ali, 5 Marcus Stoinis/Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Akshdeep Nath/Shivam Dube, 7 Pawan Negi, 8 Yuzvendra Chahal, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Navdeep Saini, 11 Kulwant Khejroliya

Strategy punt

  • The spin trio of Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav have struggled against left-handers this season, conceding 230 runs in 28.2 overs, with only three wickets between them. Will that tempt Royal Challengers to team-up Moeen Ali, who has been in good form, and Shimron Hetmyer, who was left out after a few early failures, in the middle order? With Marcus Stoinis hardly bowling, it might be worth giving Hetmyer a few more opportunities, regardless.
  • Moeen Ali averages nearly 38 at a strike rate of 171 at No.4 in the IPL. Those are his best numbers in any position in the league, giving RCB enough reason to stick with him in that position. From Knight Riders’ point of view, Moeen has struggled most against the googly this season, dismissed thrice off the delivery that happens to be Piyush Chawla’s stock ball.
  • Moeen Ali bowls 82% overs his overs in the middle (overs 7 to 15), but averages just 17 at an economy rate of 6 runs per over against left-handers in the IPL. Will Virat Kohli gamble and throw the ball to Moeen if Sunil Narine opens the batting for Knight Riders?

Stats that matter

  • RCB find three of their bowlers in the top 10 on the list of most expensive bowlers at the death (overs 17-20) in the IPL since 2015 (qualification: minimum 25 overs bowled at the death). Umesh Yadav leads the way, conceding 12 runs per over, Tim Southee finds himself placed third at 11.6 runs per over, and Mohammed Siraj occupies the seventh spot at 10.7 runs per over
  • KKR spinners have the second-worst bowling average this season (41.2)
  • KKR spinners are the second-most expensive this season (7.9 runs per over)
  • RCB have lost all five matches when they have lost the toss. KKR have lost four of five matches when they have lost the toss

Finch, Gurney bolster Renegades in top four

Melbourne Renegades completed a defence of 152 to defeat the Sydney Thunder – one of their nearest rivals on the competition table – by 12 runs in Sydney

The Report by Daniel Brettig22-Jan-2019Melbourne Renegades solidified their place in the Big Bash League top four with a stout defence of 152 to defeat the Sydney Thunder – one of their nearest rivals on the competition table – by 12 runs in a defensive affair at the Sydney Showground Stadium. The visiting captain, Aaron Finch, made a vital half-century, not only for the Renegades but his own peace of mind after a difficult summer, and with assistance from Cameron White was able to lift the Melbourne side to a defensible total on a somewhat sluggish pitch. In the chase, Callum Ferguson appeared to have given the Thunder a strong chance to chase down their target, but his dismissal amid an admirably tight spell by Cameron Boyce – who had been unsuccessfully promoted to open with Finch – left the young batsman Jason Sangha unable to summon the big hits required to finish off the job.Finch begins finding himselfOver a summer in which he graduated into, then flunked out of, the Australian Test team, Finch has seemed to get increasingly frazzled by the array of formats and tasks confronting him, to the point that his role as the national limited-overs captain in a World Cup year has become in danger of being affected. At the conclusion of the ODI series against India, the Australian coach Justin Langer expressed hope that Finch would regain some equilibrium via the BBL.A halting stay worth only 14 in the Melbourne Derby was not exactly promising, but against the Thunder Finch was able to get himself going in the sort of manner he will hope to make a habit of over the next six months or more. Though the Renegades started off with the experimental presence of Cameron Boyce at the top of the order alongside Finch, the captain was able to build into an innings of confidence and some heavy hitting that reaped four sixes while not giving a chance until he fell to Sandhu. It’s a long way from the World Cup final, but it’s a start.Sams, Sandhu keep Renegades in checkAt 3 for 116 in the 16th over, the Renegades had successfully absorbed the loss of early wickets and also a parsimonious spell by Fawad Ahmed to appear set for a late ransacking of runs. However, Sandhu’s fooling of Finch with a slower ball was to set the scene for a twist in the innings, as Sandhu and Sams put the clamps on by claiming regular wickets.White’s innings of 40, featuring 14 cuffed from one over from Chris Jordan, ensured the Renegades did not lose all momentum, but three wickets apiece for Sandhu and Sams had the Thunder looking confident at the innings break.Ferguson sets things upDuring a long career that might have featured more international cricket but for a terribly timed knee injury in 2009, Ferguson has proven himself to be an expert at the sorts of modulated, balanced innings critical to white-ball success. Coming in at the fall of Anton Devcich in the very first over, pouched at third man, Ferguson shrugged off the loss of the powerful Shane Watson shortly after to appear to set up the Thunder for a fruitful chase. His stand with Jason Sangha relied upon Ferguson finding the boundary with some regularity, and when Sangha advanced to dispatch Boyce inside-out over cover in the 13th over, the partnership appeared set to enter another gear. That, though, was to reckon without Boyce.Boyce holds the Renegades centreDiscarded by Tasmania and unwanted by Queensland after the Bulls chose to move on to the younger Mitchell Swepson, Boyce has proven an excellent acquisition by the Renegades as a willing wristspinner who has found an artful balance between defence and attack. His spell to the Thunder rather summed this up, as he conceded only a single boundary in four overs. At the same time he was able to coax Ferguson into a blow that fell fractionally short of the long-on boundary and into the hands of a jumping Dan Christian, leaving Sangha to fight an ultimately losing battle with his own timing and boundary-scoring as the Renegades squeaked their way to victory.

Thisara Perera's all-round heroics down Dhaka Dynamites

The allrounder scored 26 off 12 and followed it up with three wickets and a 19th over that went for just one run

The Report by Peter Della Penna22-Jan-2019

Shahid Afridi celebrates with Imrul Kayes•Raton Gomes/BCB

How the game played outComilla Victorians pulled out a sloppy, see-saw affair by seven runs thanks to the all-round heroics of Thisara Perera. Though the final margin might indicate that the game went down to the wire, Victorians actually sealed it quite comfortably in the final three overs when the Dhaka Dynamites tail was left stranded following the dismissal of captain Shakib Al Hasan. The match was far from a crisp contest, with a series of missed chances on both sides that served to keep it interesting. Deep square leg and deep midwicket were high-traffic areas throughout the day and the Victorians’ ability to seize more chances on the boundary paid off in the end.Turning points With Liam Dawson struggling to get bat on ball at one end, the red-hot Thisara Perera clattered three sixes in his 26 off 12 balls before he was run out in the final over in a mix-up trying to steal a bye. Thisara removed a rampaging Andre Russell for 46 in the 15th over to defuse the Dynamites’ chase with a slower ball pulled to deep midwicket. With 36 needed off 25 balls and with five wickets in hand, Shakib pulled a full toss from Shahid Afridi straight to deep midwicket. Thisara followed up Shakib’s dismissal with two more via the short ball in the 17th, effectively snuffing out the Dynamites chancesStar of the dayThisara Perera not only continued to be the Victorians’ sensational spark plug at the end of the innings with the bat, but silenced the Dynamites at the death. Not only did he take three crucial wickets, but he conceded just a single in the 19th over, leaving 19 runs to get off the last six balls, which wound up being too tough for the tail. The big missShakib got an absolute meatball from Afridi that should have been hit out of the ground. TELL ME MORE

It was an electrifying start to the game with the visitors surging ahead in the fourth minute through Joey Veerman. Memphis Depay stole the ball away and cut it back for Veerman who finished past Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. The early jolt woke Germany up from their slumber with Jamal Musiala looking menacing with his dribbling and guile. They did not have to wait long to get the equaliser as a thunderbolt from Maximilian Mittelstadt levelled the score in the 10th minute. After Musiala teed him up, the left back fearlessly tried his luck from distance and his effort had enough venom to beat Bart Verbruggen.

After the equaliser, Germany further upped the ante. The partnership of Musiala and Florian Wirtz was free-flowing and the Dutch defenders had a tough time keeping them in check. After a sustained spell of German dominance, the Dutch started making inroads on the counter. Matthijs de Ligt should have converted a free-kick from Daley Blind but the defender bizarrely chose to be unselfish from a scoring position and headed the ball across the goal instead of going for the target. After the break, the Netherlands showed more sharpness in attack and this time it was Depay who fluffed his lines as he shot over the crossbar.

The Dutch kept probing and they even got the better half-chances but the lack of finesse hurt their cause. It was only in the final quarter that the home fans found their voice once again with Musiala coming tantalisingly close on a couple of occasions to getting his name on the scoresheet. Nonetheless, Niclas Fullkrug chipped in with the winner after connecting to a Toni Kroos corner with his shoulder. Verbruggen stretched every muscle of his body to stop it but the ball had trickled just over the goal line before he pulled it out and the goal line technology deemed the ball to be over the line by a whisker to hand Germany their second win in this international break.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

It was Fullkrug's 11th international goal in just 15 appearances. It's a quite remarkable record, considering he did not make his Germany debut until he was nearly 30 years old.

  • THE MVP

Musiala was the brightest spark on the pitch. The Bayern Munich player displayed his wide range of skills with the ball but showed enough maturity and composure to find the right pass at the right time. Although he has an assist to show for his efforts, the youngster would be disappointed to have not found the net after a stellar evening at Frankfurt.

    THE BIG LOSER

Kai Havertz was an almost anonymous figure. He hardly got involved with the game, was cut a solitary figure up front, and was finally replaced in the 73rd minute by Fullkrug. There was a shroud of frustration and disappointment upon his face as he walked to the dugout, likely as he's been in such good form recently.

O que Filipe Luís espera de Flamengo x Cruz Azul?

O técnico Filipe Luís, do Flamengo, concedeu entrevista coletiva no Catar nesta terça antes do último treinamento preparatório. O comandante rubro-negro rasgou elogios à equipe do Cruz Azul e negou favoritismo.

— elogiou.
