Aston Villa: Emery handed Villa a huge profit by selling starlet for £14m

Aston Villa have struck success under Unai Emery, as the Spaniard continues to impress since taking the reins from Steven Gerrard in October 2022.

The formidable form since the former Arsenal manager’s touchdown in the Midlands was complemented by his stellar work in the transfer window, as himself and president of football operations, Monchi, welcomed five new arrivals to Villa Park.

As well as incomings, Emery bid farewell to some talented members of the squad he inherited from Gerrard, with the £18m departure of academy graduate Cameron Archer leading the way in terms of most profitable sales.

The 21-year-old striker wasn’t the only academy product to end his association with the Villans, as Jaden Philogene headed to Hull City on a permanent basis, and Aaron Ramsey left his brother Jacob Ramsey behind at Villa Park to sign for Burnley.

How much did Aston Villa sell Aaron Ramsey for?

The Clarets snatched up the signing of Ramsey for a fee of £14m, as the midfielder opted to endeavour on a new challenge away from his boyhood club.

The 20-year-old, who featured primarily for the U21’s side at Villa, was in good stead to fly the nest this summer, after spending the last year and a half on various loan spells.

In January 2022, the playmaker joined Cheltenham in League One, before being handed a new challenge in the Championship, where he represented both Norwich City, and most recently Middlesbrough on successive loans.

The 2022/23 campaign was a pivotal one for Ramsey, who scored three goals and claimed three assists in the second tier for the Canaries, followed by netting five and assisting one in only 11 appearances for Boro.

The Birmingham-born gem had seen first-hand how far his career could go by succeeding at the challenges placed in front of him, as his brother became an integral part of Villa’s Premier League XI under both Gerrard and Emery.

For the 20-year-old however, his future was away from the comforts of Villa Park, as the Villans cashed in on his talents to allow him to make the move to Turf Moor.

Were Aston Villa right to sell Aaron Ramsey?

It’s never easy to see an academy player leave before being given the chance to prove himself, however selling Ramsey this summer was the ideal move for both club and player given his progression the season prior.

Due to the talents already in Emery’s midfield, including his brother, a way into the first team wasn’t going to be easy for the starlet, as he eyed further progression from his success at senior level while on loan.

Former Middlesbrough loanee Aaron Ramsey.

Once lauded as “quality” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, Ramsey’s move to Burnley was key for his next move in his career, as well as being highly profitable for Villa, who received a price far higher than perhaps anticipated for the youngster.

At the point of his sale, Football Transfers logged the Englishman’s expected transfer value (xTV) at just €4.3m (£3.7m), reinforcing the strength of the sale on Villa’s part.

Sold for a fee over £10m higher than his actual worth, Emery orchestrated the best outcome for the Midlands club and the prospect, who only managed to record one senior appearance for Villa back in 2021.

Hearts: Tynecastle star is now worth 700% more than when he signed

Heart of Midlothian recorded a 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock in the League Cup quarter-final during the week which sent them through to the last four of the competition for the first time since the 2019/20 season.

It has been a tough start to the 2023/24 campaign for Steven Naismith as an encouraging first few weeks were then followed by a run of four straight defeats up until the international break which rocked the confidence at the club, especially after they missed out on European group stage football.

Naismith dived into the transfer market to bolster his first-team squad during the summer, eventually signing seven players and while some have had an immediate impact, such as Frankie Kent, a few have failed to really hit the ground running thus far.

This has resulted in the manager putting his faith in players who were key to former boss Robbie Neilson, asking the likes of Kye Rowles, Cammy Devlin and Lawrence Shankland to continue impressing and showing the new signings exactly what it takes in order to stand out for the club.

Shankland has been a wonderful signing for the Tynecastle outfit and is perhaps one of their finest pieces of transfer business conducted in the previous few seasons such was his impact last term.

This has led Hearts to place a big price tag on him in order to deter any potential suitors who may be willing to prise him away from the club.

How much did Hearts sign Lawrence Shankland for?

The striker played for a variety of different Scottish clubs during his formative years in his career, including Queens Park, Aberdeen, and St Mirren, but it wasn’t until he joined Ayr United in 2017 that he became the lethal machine everyone is witnessing now.

Lawrence Shankland

Indeed, over the next two seasons, he plundered 61 goals in just 73 matches for the club, chipping in with 24 assists too and this sealed a move to Dundee United in 2019. His goal-scoring exploits didn’t let up in Tayside either, scoring 40 in 74 games before Belgian side Beerschot V.A swooped in to sign him back in 2021.

It didn’t quite work out for the striker on the continent and Hearts shelled out £500k to bring him back to his homeland last summer as Neilson looked to get his career back on track.

Neilson managed Shankland during their time at United, and he lauded the player on his arrival, saying: “I’m really happy that we’ve been able to bring Lawrence to the club.

“He’s a player I know well from our time together at Dundee United. I know exactly what his qualities are and what he’ll bring to the team, and that’s why we really pushed hard to make him a Hearts player. I know he’ll get a great welcome and I’m looking forward to working with him again.”

He certainly went on to impress for the Gorgie side during the 2022/23 season and this attracted plenty of interest for his services.

How much is Lawrence Shankland valued at now?

During the summer transfer window, there appeared to be plenty of interest shown in the 28-year-old, despite playing just one season at Hearts.

Clubs from Saudi Arabia and England were keen on the hitman according to the Edinburgh Evening News (via the Scottish Sun), yet Hearts were having none of this reported interest.

Naismith ended up placing a £3-£4m valuation on his prized asset, and it certainly worked as he remains at the club, until January at least.

If using the top end of the valuation, it represents a staggering 700% increase from their initial £500k just 12 months prior, and it indicates that Hearts have hit the jackpot by signing Shankland.

Why is Lawrence Shankland worth this much?

The 6-foot marksman scored only five times in 28 appearances for Beerschot, yet Neilson managed to restore his confidence by making him an integral part of the side which featured in the group stages of the Europa Conference League.

Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland.

Shankland ended up registering an impressive 32 goal contributions across all competitions last term – 28 goals and four assists – and although it couldn’t secure third spot in the table for the club, they would have been a lot worse off if it hadn’t been for his ruthlessness in front of goal.

Journalist Joel Sked rightfully praised him towards the end of 2022 following a wonderful first few months at the club, saying: “Lawrence Shankland has been different class for Hearts. So much more to his game than goals.

"His ability to drop in, act as that focal point and link player, his awareness and the way he creates space for himself. All so good and so vital.”

It is perhaps no surprise that the striker ranked first across the Hearts squad for overall Sofascore rating (7.11), goals and assists (28) and scoring frequency (a goal every 127 minutes) while also finishing top of the pile for shots on target per game (1.4), clearly demonstrating how effective he was in front of goal throughout the season.

Naismith has had to rely on him during the embryonic stages of 2023/24 too as the 28-year-old has scored five goals in 12 appearances, yet he may need to do more as the club are currently sitting in sixth place in the league table, eight points adrift of third spot.

It hasn’t been an easy ride so far for Naismith yet if he can secure some much-needed wins in the coming games, confidence will hopefully grow.

One of the best decisions the club made was signing Shankland and giving him a platform to succeed as he is currently one of the most natural finishers in the country at the moment.

More interest in the player will be inevitable across the coming months, especially if he maintains his current form and the most important thing is Hearts keep a hold of him until they have a suitable replacement lined up.

When he does depart, Shankland will rake in the Tynecastle side a major profit and this could in turn, allow the club to vastly improve their squad as they aim for success.

Mind the windows, Fawad

The batsman broke a dressing-room window – accidentally, he says – after being timed out in a Lancashire League match

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jun-2018Fawad Alam has made a million runs in domestic cricket, approximately, and all those runs have taken him to England. Not to be in Pakistan’s Test squad, of course, but to play as a professional in the Lancashire League. Life cannot be great when you’re so near and yet so far from your national team, and life has only got worse for Fawad, who has now inflicted harm upon an unsuspecting pane of glass after being dismissed in the most unusual manner.Playing for Clitheroe Cricket Club, Fawad broke a dressing-room window after being adjudged timed out in a T20 match against Colne Cricket Club on Friday, while walking in at No. 3 at the fall of opener Thomas Lord’s wicket.Speaking to Geo TV, Fawad said he had broken the window accidentally, while attempting to fling his bat into his kitbag. He did not, however, deny his disappointment at the manner of his dismissal, since he felt he had reached the crease in time.”According to the law the incoming batsman must take the wicket within two minutes but the umpire gave me timed out before the allocated time and asked me to leave,” Fawad said. “I eventually had to leave. I was infuriated, which is quite obvious when something like this happens to you. So when I went back to the dressing room I threw my bat towards my bag which I had kept some distance away, near the window, only to hit the window by mistake. It was unintentional and unfortunately it was unnecessarily blown out of proportion.”Never in my whole career has a finger been pointed at me for indiscipline, so this Lancashire League incident was unfortunate and painful for me.”According to Law 40.1, the incoming batsman actually has three minutes, and not two, to be in his crease after the fall of the previous wicket: “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batsman, the incoming batsman must, unless Time has been called, be in position to take guard or for the other batsman to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batsman will be out, Timed out.”Timed out was added to the MCC’s Laws of Cricket only in 1980, and is an exceedingly rare dismissal. It has only occurred a handful of times at first-class level, most notably in 2002 when the West Indies fast bowler Vasbert Drakes found himself stuck in an airplane – on his way from the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka to play a domestic game in South Africa – when his turn to bat arrived. As for breaking windows, Matt Prior was involved in a similar incident after being run out during the Lord’s Test against Sri Lanka in 2011 – a rebounding bat blamed for showering glass on MCC members below the England dressing room.

Uphill task for Australia

India’s batting line-up and spinners give them a distinct upper hand in the two-Test series against Australia

S Rajesh29-Sep-2010A two-Test series does scant justice to a rivalry which has been the most consistently compelling of the last decade, but Australia and India will have to make do with just that over the next two weeks. That still gives India a chance to further strengthen their hold on their top position, and they’ll fancy their chances against an opposition they beat 2-0 the last time they toured. For Australia, on the other hand, it’s an opportunity to avenge their convincing defeat of 2008, and take their first step towards regaining the top spot. For both teams, this will also be the beginning of a crucial period of Test cricket – Australia host the Ashes later this year, while India host New Zealand and then travel to South Africa.Australia still lead the overall head-to-head record comfortably, but over the last ten years India have held their own against them, winning seven out of 19 Tests. In the last five series between the two, both teams have won a couple, while the 2003-04 series in Australia was drawn 1-1.

India v Australia in Tests

Overall, since Jan 2001 19 7 6 6/ 0
In India, since Jan 2001 11 5 3 3/ 0

Over the last couple of years more teams have challenged Australia’s dominance, but India is the only side which has won more than it has lost against them since 2001. In this period, Australia have beaten India six times and lost on seven occasions, giving them a win-loss ratio of 0.85. Against all other teams, their ratio is at least 2.50; England have won a couple of home series against them, but despite that they only have a 6-15 win-loss record during this period. South Africa is the only other team to have won more than a Test against them.

England 25 15 6 4 2.50

The biggest problem for Australia on their tours to India has been the inconsistency of their top batsmen. Among those who are in the current squad, most average lower in India than in other countries. For some batsmen the difference is small, but for others it’s huge. The one batsman who has plenty to prove in India is Ricky Ponting. He has toured India five times, and played 12 Tests, but he has struggled almost every time. His first Test century in this country came on his previous tour, in 2008-09, when he scored 123 in the first Test in Bangalore. Even that, though, didn’t translate into sustained momentum, as his next six innings in that series fetched him only 143. His average in that series was 38, which, while not meeting his lofty standards, was still comfortably higher than anything he had managed on previous tours, and a huge improvement on his average of 3.40 in 2001. Michael Clarke started his Test career with a delightful century in Bangalore, but he has scored only one more hundred in his next 14 innings in India.

Australian batsmen in India
Batsman Tests Runs Average 100s/ 50s Career average
Michael Clarke 8 651 46.50 2/ 3 50.71
Simon Katich 8 625 44.64 1/ 4 46.83
Michael Hussey 4 394 56.28 1/ 3 51.03
Ricky Ponting 12 438 20.85 1/ 2 54.66
Shane Watson 4 170 24.28 0/ 1 36.67

Most of the Indian batsmen, on the other hand, have excellent home records against Australia. VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar have consistently done well, while Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni have excellent numbers too: Gambhir has two hundreds in four Tests, while Dhoni averages more than 60. The only major disappointment has been Rahul Dravid: the 180 he scored in that unforgettable Kolkata Test in 2001 remains his only century at home against Australia in 26 innings, and his average of 35.52 is well below his career average of almost 53. His last two home attempts against them have been particularly disappointing – in 14 innings, he has scored a mere 287 runs. With this certain to be his last home Test series against Australia, it’s his final chance to make amends.

Indian batsmen against Australia at home
Batsman Tests Runs Average 100s/ 50s Career average
Sachin Tendulkar 13 1226 53.30 4/ 6 56.02

Rahul Dravid 15 888 35.52 1/ 6 52.94

Gautam Gambhir 4 467 58.37 2/ 1 52.83
MS Dhoni 4 307 61.40 0/ 4 41.90

There are question marks over Harbhajan Singh’s fitness, and it will be a cruel blow to India if he misses either of the two Tests. In home games against Australia, Harbhajan has been outstanding, averaging seven wickets per match – against a career average of 4.2 – and less than eight overs per wicket. He was truly astonishing in 2001, but even in the last two series Harbhajan has done pretty well, taking 21 wickets at an average of 24 in 2004 and 15 at 28.86 in 2008. Zaheer Khan is the other big threat, but he has generally been more effective overseas than at home, averaging 37.30 in 29 Tests in India, and 30.93 abroad.

Ishant Sharma 4 15 27.06 55.2 0/ 0
Amit Mishra 3 14 24.07 52.2 1/ 0

The venues for the two Tests, Mohali and Bangalore, are also interesting choices given India’s recent records there. Mohali has been excellent for the hosts – India have won three out of six since 2000 and drawn the others – but Bangalore has been equally dismal, with three defeats and no wins in six games during this period. (Click here to see India’s Test record at all home venues since 2000.)Australia will look forward to playing in Bangalore too – since 1990, they’ve won two out of three Tests here, and drawn the other. In Mohali they’ve lost their only match, in 2008, by 320 runs.

Mohali 6 3/ 0/ 3 1 0/ 1/ 0
Bangalore 6 0/ 3/ 3 3 2/ 0/ 1

Most of the current Indian batsmen have performed well in Mohali, which is the venue of the first Test. Gambhir, Sehwag, Dravid and Laxman all average more than 55 at this ground, but Tendulkar has been below par, scoring only one century in 14 innings. Gambhir’s last four Test innings here – two each against Australia and England – read 67, 104, 179 and 97. With both Sehwag and Gambhir among the runs at this ground, the opening partnerships have blossomed too: in six innings, these two batsmen have put together two century and two half-century stands, and average 81. Their highest came on Australia’s previous tour in 2008, when the pair added 182 in India’s second innings.

MS Dhoni 3 205 51.25 0/ 2
Sachin Tendulkar 9 573 47.75 1/ 4

Mohali used to be a venue which helped fast bowlers, but over the last decade, spinners have done much better, as is illustrated by the table below. The only fast bowler to take a five-for in six Tests during this period is L Balaji, while Zaheer has taken eight wickets in four Tests at an average of 59. (Click here for the full list of fast bowlers at this ground since 2000.)Spinners, on the other hand, have fared quite well. Apart from Harbhajan and Anil Kumble who’ve had plenty of success here, legspinners Amit Mishra and Danish Kaneria have been among the wickets too. Man Utd interested in signing "one-man army" who could replace Casemiro

Manchester United are interested in signing a central talisman to replace Casemiro in January, according to a reliable journalist.

Casemiro receives offer to leave

According to The Daily Mail, Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial have all been made available for transfer next month, with the club’s football director John Murtough having travelled to Saudi Arabia to tout potential suitors.

The Red Devils’ defensive midfielder is believed to have recently received an offer from a mystery club in that particular country, so should he indeed seal a departure in the coming weeks, Erik ten Hag will have to go on a hunt to find a suitable replacement.

Everton’s Amadou Onana appears to have been highlighted as a possible candidate, with the 22-year-old having emerged as Sean Dyche’s second best-performing defensive player so far this season (WhoScored – Everton statistics).

The Belgium international is a long-term target of the hierarchy having reportedly held talks to join over the summer, and while a deal failed to come to fruition before the deadline, chiefs are considering taking a second bite of the cherry to bring him to Old Trafford.

Man United keen on Onana

Taking to X, Sebastien Denis revealed that Man United want to sign Onana, but they aren’t alone in their pursuit with Barcelona also in the race to secure his services in January.

Exclusive: Amadou Onana impresses in the Premier League and could leave the Toffees next summer or even this winter. Everton is asking for between 55 and 60 million € [£47-51m]. Barca has already met the midfielder's entourage. Manchester United still very interested in the former Lille player.”

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Onana is a "one-man army" in the centre

Standing at 6 foot 3, Onana brings a completely different dimension to the centre of the park with his height, where he's not only strong at winning his individual battles in the air, but he also loves to get stuck into challenges to try and win back possession for his team in the Premier League.

Aerial Wins – 2.8

Tackles – 2.5

Clearances – 1.1

Pass Success Rate – 85.4%

The Dakar native is additionally capable of making a positive impact at the opposite end of the pitch having scored three goals and provided the same number of assists since joining Everton last summer, with his desire to get involved both defensively and offensively making him a well-rounded player (Transfermarkt – Onana statistics).

Ten Hag’s target is even a versatile operator having been deployed in five different positions following his arrival on the professional scene, including three roles in the midfield, as a centre-back and even at centre-forward, so he would be able to provide fantastic cover in other areas of the pitch.

As described by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Onana is a “one-man army” because of all of the things that he can do at once, so should the board be able to get this deal over the line in the coming weeks, it would be a massive coup for Ten Hag.

'A big, big wake-up call' – Spurs captain Son Heung-Min delivers brutally honest verdict on 'unacceptable' 3-0 loss to Fulham

Heung-min Son made a candid evaluation of his team's performance after Tottenham's "unacceptable" 3-0 defeat against Fulham.

Rodrigo Muniz's brace and Sasa Lukic's goal condemned Spurs to their second loss in four games on Saturday afternoon, denting their hopes of climbing to fourth place in the Premier League standings. Ange Postecoglou's side appeared lacklustre at Craven Cottage following a sharp display in their 4-0 victory over Aston Villa last week and Son was distraught after their latest defeat.

AdvertisementWHAT SON SAID

Speaking after the match, Son did not hold back while expressing his frustration at the current situation.

“It is very disappointing and very frustrating and everybody has to look in the mirror and say, ‘It’s my fault’,” he told reporters.

“Because it was not good enough and it’s not the level of effort we’ve put in this season. The attitude, and the performance were not good enough. For everyone, it’s a big, big wake-up call. In the Premier League, if you’re not 100 per cent ready you get punished like this. Aston Villa are an amazing team but so are Fulham, everybody has high-quality players.

“But if you’re not giving 100 per cent, including me, that’s what you get. You get punished. Especially because last season we had amazing results [against Fulham] doesn’t mean you get three points for free. It’s a big wake-up call and the result has happened so you have to make it two steps backwards and make some strong steps forward."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Son went on to label the performance as "unacceptable" and later even apologised to Tottenham’s fans during an interview with the club’s official media.

"It is unacceptable but you always have lessons and, including me it was unacceptable, we know where we are – not in terms of [the table] or points – but we’re representing Tottenham. This [game] wasn’t close to where we’ve been all this season," he said.

It’s very, very sad to watch and very, very sad to get a result like that – and also the fans don’t deserve it. They came here with positive energy and good vibes, and losing this way is very, very tough. The players are very down and this is normal, we now have to make it two steps backwards and another strong few steps forward because after the international break we have a massive game.

"I can’t describe the feeling. I’m devastated, disappointed, frustrated. As the captain of this club I just want to apologise to the fans, they don’t deserve that result and that performance.

“We can’t just give up in these games, we have to give everything we have – including me – we have to do better. After the international break we have to come back stronger than ever. I don’t want to blame any player because we weren’t good enough. Fulham did a good job but the goals came of our mistakes. We can talk about it all night but the performance and attitude was nowhere near close to what we’ve put in this season.”

England at the same time since Ben and Adam Hollioake – also of Surrey – played an ODI against Sri Lanka in Sydney in 1999.With both Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes missing the series due to injury – Stokes will be with the squad throughout the series as he continues his rehabilitation from his torn left hamstring – both Currans have every chance of appearing in an England side that has won only one of their last five and three of their last 10 IT20 matches. There is no place in the squad for Sam Billings, Dawid Malan, Liam Dawson or James Vince – all of whom were in the squad for the
tri-series tournament also involving Australia and New Zealand earlier this year – while Mark Wood, who has struggled to maintain his top
pace in the ODI series against Australia, is rested.Mooen Ali, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow, who were rested from the previous IT20 tri-series, return while Jake Ball is recalled.Stokes could be added to the squad if he is deemed to have returned to full fitness.England IT20 squad
