King slams 83* to lead Tallawahs to third CPL title after Allen, Gordon three-fors set up chase

A regal half-century from Brandon King and three-wicket hauls from Fabian Allen and Nicholson Gordon thwarted favourites Barbados Royals and gave Jamaica Tallawahs their third – and first since 2016 – CPL title. Shamarh Brooks, who scored a sublime century in the second qualifier against Guyana Amazon Warriors, also contributed handsomely, with a 33-ball 47, as Tallawahs chased down 162 with plenty to spare at Providence. The odds were stacked against Tallawahs even before a ball was bowled in the final. Mohammad Amir, who had taken a chart-topping nine wickets in the powerplay this season, was ruled out after having suffered a groin injury during the second qualifier. Then, his replacement, Migael Pretorius, conceded 24 runs in his two powerplay overs and then jarred his back while attempting a catch in the outfield. In the absence of their overseas spearheads, local seamer Gordon, in his first CPL season, stepped up at the death with figures of 3 for 33.It was left-arm fingerspinner Fabian Allen who had launched Tallawahs’ fightback after Kyle Mayers and Rahkeem Cornwall had slammed 63 off 35 balls for the first wicket. Allen got rid of the dangerous Cornwall with the last ball of the powerplay for 36 off 21, and proceeded to dismiss Mayers soon after, He later sent back Azam Khan, who had top-scored for Royals with 51 off 40 balls. It was déjà vu for the Royals franchise: they reached the IPL 2022 final but had fallen short at the final hurdle there as well.Kyle Mayers and Rahkeem Cornwall gave Barbados Royals a rapid start•CPL T20 via Getty Images

Cornwall’s opening salvo
Despite variable bounce posing a threat to batters – some balls reared from a length while some shot low at shin height from a similar length – Cornwall stayed true to his role of maximising the powerplay. He whipped Pretorius over square leg for six and then went 6, 6, 4 against offspinner Chris Green in the fourth over. In the next, Cornwall picked a fairly blameless non-turning ball from Imad Wasim and launched it over midwicket for a massive six.Mayers, too, was aggressive from the outset and punished anything that was full and in his arc. However, both the openers fell either side of the powerplay to trigger a wobble.Fabian Allen was named the Player of the Match for his three-wicket haul•CPL T20 via Getty Images

Allen and Imad pin down Royals
Allen had induced that wobble by exploiting the variable bounce on offer. After defeating Cornwall with extra bounce, he bowled Mayers with a slider that kept low. He then returned in the end overs to have an advancing Azam stumped. Allen was also busy in the field, patrolling the hotspots.Imad Wasim, who was the Player of the Match when Tallawahs had won the title in 2016, bowled inswingers in the powerplay and didn’t let Azam get away either. Something had to give and that something was a promoted Jason Holder missing a slog and being castled by Imad for 17 off 19 balls.Azam went on to notch up a 39-ball half-century but couldn’t find a higher gear to hurt Tallawahs. Najibullah Zadran was also responsible for Royals’ slowdown, managing just six off 12 balls.Gordon thrives at the death
Gordon wasn’t even needed with the ball during the Eliminator against Kings, but in the final, Rovman Powell needed him to do the tough job of bowling at the death. He varied his pace cleverly and bowled into the pitch to best Najibullah, Devon Thomas and Corbin Bosch. Thrown in at the deep end in his first CPL season at the age of 30, Gordon repaid Tallawahs’ faith and proved that his chart-topping tally in the inaugural 6ixty that preceded the CPL was no fluke.Brandon Kings struck a regal 50-ball 83 to lead the Tallawahs charge in the chase•CPL T20 via Getty Images

King: Batting royalty from Guyana Jamaica
Before CPL 2022, Powell had been quite vocal about getting the local Jamaica boys together in their quest for unlikely success. King moved from Guyana Amazon Warriors and Allen from St Kitts and Nevis Patriots; it was quite fitting that the pair played starring roles for Tallawahs in the final.Mayers struck in the first over of the chase to york Kennar Lewis, but King repaired the damage with an 86-run second-wicket partnership with Brooks off 58 balls. After patiently seeing off the new ball – King was on a run-a-ball 25 at one stage – he cranked up the tempo to raise his half-century off 36 balls. Along the way, King also surpassed his West Indian opening partner Mayers to become the highest run-getter this season.Spin has been King’s nemesis in the past, but he found a way past Mujeeb Ur Rahman and left-arm fingerspinner Joshua Bishop, who had been picked ahead of legspinner Hayden Walsh Jr on the day. King took Mujeeb and Bishop for 44 off a mere 19 balls, including eight fours and a six. He iced the game with another six, off Obed McCoy, to spark wild celebrations in Tallawahs’ camp.

He was saved by Saliba: Arteta must drop 76-touch Arsenal dud after Fulham

da realsbet: Yet another decisive weekend in the title race? Quite probably. While Liverpool had the Saturday off following Storm Darragh’s intervention, Arsenal had the opportunity to go within four points of the Reds.

da aposte e ganhe: Did the Gunners take that chance? Of course, they didn’t. Mikel Arteta’s men were made to rue their first dropped points since the last international break following what was a rather laboured display at Craven Cottage.

Raul Jimenez opened the scoring early on the clash before Arsenal fought back through yet more set-piece wizardry.

Without Gabriel, William Saliba has become the go-to man, now scoring in consecutive Premier League fixtures.

Truth be told, Fulham rarely threatened and it was Arsenal who dominated proceedings. A late winner looked to have arrived courtesy of Bukayo Saka, only for Gabriel Martinelli to be flagged for offside by VAR after bedlam had occurred in the away end.

So, on a day of negativity for Arsenal, were there any positives to take from the clash?

Arsenal's best performers against Fulham

Saliba has been a man mountain since Arteta first named him on a Premier League team sheet over two years ago now.

He was a rock at the back once more against Fulham and was the man who gave Arsenal a route back into the game.

With Gabriel missing again through injury, the goalscoring burden has fallen on the shoulders of Saliba from set-pieces and he’s not let Nicolas Jover or Arteta down one bit.

Nicolas Jover: Everything you need to know about Arsenal's set-piece guru

Who is the man behind Arsenal’s ridiculous threat from set pieces?

ByBrett Worthington Dec 5, 2024

While his goal against Manchester United a few days ago went in off his backside, this goal was rather more deliberate, sticking the ball home from a matter of yards out after Kai Havertz had nodded it into the Frenchman’s path.

Saliba wasn’t the only positive. After a monster performance against the Red Devils in midweek, Declan Rice was a surging forward from midfield once again.

His dead-ball delivery was inch-perfect on a number of occasions and he left the field having completed four of his seven crosses, three key passes and a 98% pass success rate overall. Not bad at all.

That said, who was the main man at fault in west London this weekend? It was arguably Jakub Kiwior.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Jakub Kiwior's performance in numbers

Fear. That was the primary feeling among Arsenal supporters inside the Emirates last Wednesday. Gabriel was absent, as too was Riccardo Calafiori.

However, their deputies in Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko did a fine job of minimising the threat posed by Ruben Amorim’s team.

In that game, the Poland international was near flawless, leaving the field with an 85% pass success rate and a duel success rate of 80%, losing just one all night.

That same level of performance was not apparent in the away clash at Fulham with the former Spezia man at fault for the hosts’ only goal of the game.

Kenny Tete played a ball in behind the Arsenal defence which wasn’t cut out by Kiwior. It looked as though he was caught in two minds. The ball was there for the Pole to throw himself at and make an intervention or he could have backtracked sooner and stopped Jimenez from racing in behind.

Unfortunately, Kiwior was able to do neither and allowed the Mexican to dart away from the defence and fire past David Raya.

It has been a week that’s arguably summed up the 24-year-old’s time in north London. Inconsistent.

Handed a 5/10 rating by the Standard’s Simon Collings, it doesn’t make for great reading from a statistical point of view either. Kiwior may have completed 89% of his passes but he did not make a tackle, was dribbled past once and didn’t win a single ground duel either.

He will have better days, that’s for sure, but if Gabriel or Calafiori are fit when Arsenal take on Monaco in the Champions League they must return to the side.

Mondli Khumalo 'fit and strong' after successful final round of surgery

Former South Africa Under-19 player had been hospitalised after an assault near Taunton in May

Firdose Moonda08-Sep-2022Mondli Khumalo, the former South Africa Under-19 and Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland bowler, has had a final, successful surgery after being assaulted in Somerset in May. He is now able to move around without a protective helmet and hopes to be able to return to professional cricket by early next year.”That was the final piece of the puzzle,” Rob Humphries, Khumalo’s agent, told ESPNcricinfo. “Now it’s about healing and the pathway back to professional cricket. He is in great spirits and physically, he is really good. He can get up and walk about. It’s about being able to get back in the gym and rebuilding his fitness. He is fit and strong and in a really good space.”Khumalo, who was on his first trip as an overseas professional at North Petherton Cricket Club, was attacked outside a pub in Bridgwater, near Taunton, where he was celebrating a win with his team-mates.A 27-year-old man was arrested and released on investigation and the case awaits the go-ahead from the crown prosecution service.Khumalo was unconscious at the scene and then placed in an induced coma for four days. He had three operations to relieve pressure and bleeding in the brain. Ten days after being hospitalised, Khumalo was able to stand unaided and his club team-mate Lloyd Irish shared a video of Khumalo catching a sponge ball. His fourth and final operation, to replace the piece of skull that had been removed to attend to the brain injury, took place on September 7. It would have taken place sooner, but was delayed by several weeks after Khumalo contracted Covid-19. He will remain in England until he is cleared to travel, with Humphries aiming for a November return. Khumalo’s mother and uncle, who made the trip across from South Africa to England soon after the attack, have already returned home and Khumalo has been in the club’s care.In June, they organised a crowd-funding campaign to help with the costs of Khumalo’s treatment, which is chargeable by the NHS, and raised £27,379. Further funding will be needed, as his bills have exceeded this amount.

Newcastle eyeing move for 25 y/o Champions League winner ahead of Arsenal

Newcastle United are believed to be eyeing a potential move for a “fantastic” Champions League-winning ace, according to a new transfer rumour.

Latest Newcastle news

The Magpies return to Premier League action after the international break, welcoming a struggling West Ham side to St James’ Park on Monday evening. The 3-1 win away to Nottingham Forest last time around was a further sign that Eddie Howe’s side have found their groove, especially after winning 1-0 at home to Arsenal the previous weekend.

While much focus is on the improvements on the pitch, there are also plenty of transfer rumours doing the rounds, as Newcastle look to bolster their squad, whether that be in the January transfer window or next summer.

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford was linked with a move to St James’ plenty of times during the summer, and while he has remained with the Clarets for the time being, he has again been mentioned as a target. He could be seen as not only a replacement for Martin Dubravka but also a long-term successor to Nick Pope between the sticks.

There is also every chance that this will be Callum Wilson’s final year at Newcastle, with his current deal expiring at the end of this season, and Botafogo striker Igor Jesus has reportedly been lined up as a possible replacement for him.

Newcastle eyeing move for "fantastic" player

According to a new update from The Boot Room, Newcastle are monitoring Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz “closely”, as they eye a move for him.

Fellow Premier League pair Arsenal and Tottenham are also mentioned as options for the 25-year-old, who has been limited to just two starts in La Liga this season, finding it hard to oust some world-renowned names from the starting lineup.

Diaz could be a shrewd signing for Newcastle if they managed to pull it off, with the Moroccan an incredibly talented player who could light up St James’ with his trickery and end product.

The Madrid star won the Champions League last season and has scored seven goals in just eight caps for Morocco, having switched his allegiances from Spain, initially appearing once at senior level for the reigning European champions.

Meanwhile, Italy legend Alessandro Nesta rates Diaz highly as a footballer, saying he “has these fantastic plays in tight spaces”, while Clarence Seedorf has hailed his creativity, saying:

“Getting past your man makes all the difference. One can make a thousand passes and not create a single chance. We need players who take responsibility, as Leao and Diaz did on the goalscoring occasion. When something special happens, it’s because someone got past their man.”

Players of Diaz’s ilk are exactly what Newcastle would welcome, in terms of providing a little more creative spark in the final third, and the Madrid ace could be perfect for the right-sided attacking role where Howe craves extra quality.

Not Isak or Gordon: Newcastle could have an £83m star in the making

Newcastle have a forward who could become their own version of a £83m superstar, and it’s not Isak or Gordon.

ByAngus Sinclair Nov 21, 2024

At 25, he is both experienced and still relatively young, and if his current club are willing to let him leave, the Magpies may view him as a perfect option out wide.

Young, fearless and full of promise, Lauren Bell embodies the new England

The 21-year-old swing bowler has revelled in West Indies with one eye on T20 World Cup

Lauren Bell has revelled in Caribbean conditions•CWI Media

Lauren Bell stands to embody the fearless style of play England Women are aiming to carry into next year’s T20 World Cup and beyond.Bell, the 21-year-old right-arm swing bowler, will mark six months since her international debut just after Christmas as part of a group of youngsters awarded an opportunity over the English summer by former head coach Lisa Keightley. The thing that has stood out about Bell, 20-year-old quick Issy Wong and teenage allrounders Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp since taking the step up is their apparent refusal to be intimidated by the opposition. It’s an approach new head coach Jon Lewis has doubled down on, calling for his entire England squad to stop playing safe. Lewis is also big on encouraging players to trust in the skills and talent that got them into the elite set-up as opposed to constantly telling them what to do, and Bell seems to be embracing that faith.”It’s been great to have new coaches in around the squad and John has come in and really drove us to be inspiring and entertaining for anyone who’s watching women’s cricket,” she said from Barbados on Tuesday, a day after arriving from Antigua for the remaining four fixtures in a five-match T20I series with West Indies. “It’s a really good way to view the game and it’s moving in the right direction.”The West Indies has been a good tour so far. The confidence I have from the coaches, the backing of the coaches, and the backing of Heather [Knight], the captain, it’s just put me in a really good place. I feel like I know my role in this team and I know where I where I stand. Being really valued and part of the team has played a big role in that.”Related

Bell made her debut in the drawn Test against South Africa in Taunton, where she took two first-innings wickets and bowled an economical if wicketless 14 overs in the visitors’ second innings.Going into last Tuesday’s second ODI against West Indies, she had three wickets from four matches in the format before claiming a devastating 4 for 33 as England crushed the hosts by 142 runs. Then, on Sunday, in just her third T20I, she claimed 3 for 26 to set up an eight-wicket victory which leaves the home side staring down the prospect of another England clean sweep after the ODIs finished 3-0.West Indies’ batting has been poor, while Bell has revelled in the conditions producing some wonderful swinging deliveries that have left them flummoxed. And while she will come up against tougher opposition, Bell has her sights set on earning place in the squad for February’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.”That’s a big focus for us,” Bell said. “I think the next four T20s are a good chance to really put a stamp to the rest of the world about where we are with our cricket and how good a T20 squad we can be.”It will also be a good chance to play some the girls who have maybe not played so much T20 cricket and see what our different options are against different players.”Bell got her chance in T20Is when veteran seamer Katherine Brunt was rested for India’s tour of England in September – she played two of their three matches for no return. Having shared new-ball duties with the experienced Kate Cross during the ODIs in Antigua, Bell finally had the chance to open the bowling with Brunt in the first T20I.”That’s actually the first time I’ve played with Katherine in my career so that was pretty special,” Bell said. “Not many people can say they’ve done that so that was really good.”Having her around, having Crossy around in the ODIs, I think I can just learn so much. They’re really open just helping me with anything. It was a good experience.”Being on the big stage is not alien to Bell, which is another notable thing in favour of England’s youngsters. She was the second-highest wicket-taker in this year’s Women’s Hundred behind Southern Brave team-mate and Australia legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington and sixth on the list in 2021, the inaugural season of the competition, which has been credited with giving young players valuable experience against top-level opponents in front of big crowds. With Kemp and Capsey returning home from the Caribbean early due to back and collarbone injuries respectively, it is down to Bell and Wong – who was not part of the ODI squad and is yet to feature in the T20I series – to fly the flag for England’s newest crop. If they can play with what is becoming a collective trademark of freedom, it should be a breeze.

Viktor Gyokeres transfer latest as Man Utd officially open £50m+ talks

INEOS have now made contact with a “top striker” who could cost Manchester United £50 million in the summer, according to a Sky Sports report. Since the Red Devils appointed Ruben Amorim as head coach, they have been linked with several new arrivals, as the Portuguese will be looking to put his own stamp on his squad soon.

Real Madrid talking to Man Utd about £85k-p/w ace who Amorim thinks is key

Real Madrid are keen on signing a Manchester United player who has become a key player in recent seasons.

ByBrett Worthington Dec 2, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

As January fast approaches, the transfer stories are going to start heating up, and United look to have a shortlist in place should opportunities present themselves. It is unlikely that the Red Devils will spend heavily in the New Year, but there could be room for a few ins and outs depending on what INEOS and Amorim like to do.

United are keeping their options open when it comes to signing a new left-back. This has been a problem position for them for some time, and January could be where they address it, as United have now placed David Raum on their shortlist ahead of 2025.

Up front, United also have Wolves forward Matheus Cunha on their radar, as they have been scouting him ahead of making a move in 2025. The 25-year-old has been a top performer for the Midlands side this season despite the team’s struggles, and he is now being looked at as a possible addition to Amorim’s side. But Cunha is not the only striker they are keeping an eye on, as they have now contacted another player that Amorim knows well.

Man Utd make contact to sign “top striker” Gyokeres

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United have made contact for Viktor Gyokeres ahead of a possible move next summer, officially opening “concrete talks”. The Swedish international has emerged as one of the brightest and most exciting forwards in European football since moving to Sporting Lisbon back in 2023.

Gyokeres, who has been labelled a “top striker,” was very impressive during his time at Coventry City but has since taken his game to a new level in Portugal. The 26-year-old is under contract until the summer of 2028, but there is an agreement he will be allowed to leave for £50 million in the summer, despite having a release clause worth £83 million.

With 16 goals in Liga Portugal this season, the Red Devils are looking to sign the striker in the summer and have made their interest known. However, they are not the only side chasing his signature, as Plettenberg adds that Manchester City have also “intensified” their efforts in recent days.

United will hope having Amorim as their head coach gives them the edge in the race to sign Gyokeres, as the forward was exceptional under the Portuguese. However, an upturn in form for Joshua Zirkzee, Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund could potentially change their minds, as all three have found the back of the net in recent matches.

Saqib Mahmood set for competitive return on England Lions tour of Sri Lanka

Fast bowler named in 16-man white-ball leg of tour after suffering stress fracture in summer

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jan-2023Saqib Mahmood will make his return to competitive action on the white-ball leg of England Lions’ tour of Sri Lanka in February, following the stress fracture in his back that ruled him out of the 2022 home international season.Mahmood, 25, impressed on England’s tour of the Caribbean in early 2022, where he made his Test debut and claimed six wickets at 22.83 in his two appearances. However, he has not played since his solitary County Championship fixture for Lancashire against Gloucestershire in May.He was, however, part of the pace bowler rehab programme in the UAE in October, as was his fellow quick, Brydon Carse, who is also included in the white-ball squad after sustaining a toe injury during last summer’s ODI series against South Africa.Yorkshire’s fast bowler Matt Fisher, who made his Test debut alongside Mahmood in Barbados in March, is one of four players named for both the red- and white-ball legs. Somerset’s captain Tom Abell, Lancashire’s left-arm spinner Tom Hartley, and the prolific Essex seamer, Sam Cook, are also included in both 16-man squads. The Test squad includes two other capped players in Alex Lees, who opened alongside Zak Crawley throughout the 2022 home summer but was dropped for the recent tour of Pakistan in favour of Ben Duckett, and Haseeb Hameed, who made a century for the Lions against the senior squad in the UAE in October, having been dropped after the last Ashes tour in 2021-22.With several contenders for England’s squads set to be in action at the SA20 and ILT20 tournaments in the coming months, the 28 players in the Lions party include three members of the Under-19 squad that reached the World Cup final in Antigua last year. Aston Villa interested in signing £30m player with same agent as Barkley

da 888: Aston Villa and NSWE are interested in signing a “quality” £30 million player with the same agent as Ross Barkley, according to a new report.

Aston Villa transfer news

da pixbet: Villa boss Unai Emery will have his eyes on January as it is an opportunity for him to once again strengthen his team ahead of the second half of the season. The Midlands side still have plenty to play for in the Premier League and will also hope they will be playing Champions League knockout football come the end of January.

While incomings may be the priority, Villa and NSWE could have a headache on their hands, as Napoli are interested in signing Jhon Duran. The Italian side want to bring in a player who can be a “sidekick” to current frontman Romelu Lukaku, and Duran is the player they have their eyes on. Villa chiefs are not looking to sell the Colombia international, but an offer between £28-33 million could test their resolve, as talks with intermediaries have already begun.

Aston Villa now open contract talks with 21 y/o loan star Filip Marschall

Unai Emery is keen to tie down a promising Aston Villa player.

ByBrett Worthington Dec 18, 2024

On a positive note for the Midlands side, they have opened talks with young goalkeeper Filip Marschall over a new contract. The 21-year-old has been impressing this season while on loan at Crewe Alexandra, and given that he is highly rated at Villa Park, they are keen to secure his long-term future. Marschall is under contract until 2027, but he could soon find himself in the first team picture.

Aston Villa now interested in signing “quality” £30m player

As well as looking to tie Marschall down to a new contract, Aston Villa are interested in signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Chelsea, according to Caught Offside. The midfielder only joined the Blues in the summer transfer window, but it is a move that has yet to get going.

Chelsea's KiernanDewsbury-Hallin action with Southampton's Kamaldeen Sulemana

Dewsbury-Hall, who has been dubbed “quality” by Graeme Bailey, was a key player under Enzo Maresca last season at Leicester City. The midfielder was a key part of their promotion, so it wasn’t a surprise that the Italian took him to Stamford Bridge, but what is a surprise is that the midfielder has hardly featured.

The 26-year-old has played 14 games across all competitions this season, but only five have come in the league, and all have come from the bench. Most of Dewsbury-Hall’s minutes have come in the UEFA Conference League, where he has been a regular all season. Aston Villa are among the number of Premier League teams looking to sign the midfielder in January.
