Bopara driven by tough memories

Ravi Bopara doesn’t have many fond memories of Sri Lanka but hopes to chance that in the World Cup quarter-final

Sidharth Monga in Colombo24-Mar-2011Ravi Bopara has a special bond with Sri Lanka. When he came here four years ago as England’s next middle-order hope, he struggled so badly he scored 42 runs in five innings, including three consecutive ducks, and went back with “SL” written on the back of his bat to remind himself how tough it was.Earlier that year, playing only his fifth ODI, in the World Cup in West Indies, Bopara and Paul Nixon had nearly pulled off a heist against Sri Lanka. From 133 for 6, they took England to needing four off the last ball, only to be denied by Dilhara Fernando, who pulled out of the delivery first to see what Bopara was going to, and then bowled a delivery that hit the top of off.Bopara talks candidly about those two connections with Sri Lanka. “I was quite young then,” he said two days before he renews his relationship with them, in another World Cup match, a quarter-final this time. “Unfortunately then I didn’t know how to hit a six. We didn’t used to practise it back then – clearing the front leg and hitting over mid-on. So I didn’t know what to do. I just carried on what I was trying to do, which was squirt it behind point and through extra cover and that sort of stuff. If I was to face that ball now, four years later, I would try and hit that ball straight over mid-on’s head.”Bopara gives Fernando credit too. “It was a clever move I think [to pull out of the delivery first time around],” he said. “He knew what I was trying to do. I didn’t change what I was going to do. In fact I should have just pulled away when he ran up the second time. But I didn’t think that far ahead. I was just concentrating on trying to hit the ball for at least three.”Although Bopara can afford to look back at that delivery with relative amusement, the Test tour that followed later that year still rankles. He was so down on himself he didn’t want to let himself forget Sri Lanka. Hence the little note at the back of the bat. “Just ‘SL’ for Sri Lanka,” Bopara said. “Just how tough it was. It’s a horrible place to be when you’ve got such high expectations of yourself, and you don’t quite cut it. It’s a horrible place to be.”I don’t write it any more. I did when I went back just to remind myself of how tough it was then, and the feelings I had during that Test series. I was just breaking into the Test team thinking I had 10 or 12 years of Test cricket ahead. I think I put a lot of pressure on myself. When players put a lot of pressure on themselves, sometimes they can buckle, and that’s what I’ve done to myself a couple of times, even during the Ashes. I thought I would have learnt from the Sri Lanka experience, but obviously I didn’t. But I definitely have learnt now. I think a lot comes from expectation, but I’ve found out ways to deal with it as I walk out to bat.”Four years on from those two experiences with Sri Lanka, Bopara was not even an original choice to be at the World Cup. He made it, though, as replacement for the injured Eoin Morgan, and was Man of the Match against South Africa in a low-scoring win that has gone a long way in keeping England alive in this tournament. Right now it is possible that he might be asked to step up and open the innings for England, given how Matt Prior hasn’t been much of a success in that makeshift role so far.Bopara certainly wouldn’t mind the move. “I’d love to open the batting,” he said. “My ambition isn’t to bat five, six or seven for the rest of my career, but let’s just see what happens. I haven’t been told anything, I don’t know if anyone has been told anything, so as far as I know it’s the same.”Bopara had opened on 14 previous occasions for England with a modest average of 29 mirroring that of his career. “I would like to have had a longer run at it,” he said. “I felt the easiest place to open was in India. It’s obviously a bit harder in England because of the new ball up front. That’s something you’ve got to get used to, but the more you open the better you get at it. Some of the best players in the world have spent time at the top of the order, and they’ve got used to it and now the top 10 batters in the world all bat at the top of the order.”There is more happening in the Test side that should excite Bopara. Paul Collingwood’s retirement could open a door for a return, which is Bopara’s ultimate aim. “I want to play Test cricket,” he said. “I don’t just want to play one-day cricket or Twenty20. I enjoy playing Test cricket and playing four days for Essex. Scoring hundreds and taking wickets and that sort of stuff. And that was my ambition as a young boy – to go out and play Test cricket and make a difference for England and be hopefully one of England’s great players.”For now, though, Tests can wait. For now, Bopara is in Sri Lanka, and needs to go back with happier memories.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ajax's poor sporting performance and the loss of revenue from Europe are causing hurdles in their transfer activity. The Eredivisie club are witnessing a significant decline in its turnover amid reduced transfer income, high wages, and transfer spending in previous years. The Dutch side were not able to match Alvarez's €6m salary cap and found even the bare loan amount unfeasible, and had to pull out of the deal.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Alvarez was signed by West Ham in 2023 from Ajax on a five-year contract. The midfielder started as an integral part of the system under former manager David Moyes and has since played 73 games for the club, in which he has scored two goals and registered three assists. The player has also been influential for the Mexican national team and has led his side to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2023 and the CONCACAF Nations League in 2025.

    WHAT NEXT FOR ALVAREZ?

The 2023 Gold Cup Player of the Tournament has not been able to find regular minutes under coach Graham Potter, and this is a cause for concern as the player captains the Mexico national team and can lose his leadership role if he does not get proper playing time before the World Cup next year.

A maiden five-wicket haul from left-arm seamer Royston Dias studded Mumbai’s 153-run win over Haryana at Eden Gardens. Up next in the semi-final will be Vidarbha, in a repeat of last year’s final.Dias fittingly picked up the final wicket when he had Jayant Yadav top-edge a pull to Suryakumar Yadav at mid-on to complete his five-wicket haul. Shardul Thakur, who picked up 6 for 58 in the first innings, was the other contributor. He ended with a match haul of 9 for 84 as Mumbai completed a sensational turnaround from 94 for 6 on the first morning.Related

Mumbai’s turnaround was orchestrated by Tanush Kotian and Shams Mulani, who put together 165 for the eighth wicket as they posted 315 in the first innings. Haryana responded solidly with Ankit Kumar, the captain, hitting 136, but from 218 for 3, Haryana collapsed to be bowled out for 301, thereby conceding a 14-run lead.Mumbai converted a slender lead into a match-winning one courtesy Ajinkya Rahane’s 108. The Mumbai captain put together a 129-run stand with Suryakumar, who ended a lean run of form with a typically robust 70 to set up the innings. Shivam Dube then made 48 to swell the lead further. Opener Lakshay Dalal top scored with 64 while Sumit Kumar hit 62 as the pair briefly frustrated Mumbai with a 90-run sixth-wicket stand before the floodgates opened.

Newcastle’s 8/10 star is now as undroppable as Gordon after Man Utd

Newcastle United’s Europa League hopes suffered a blow last night as the Magpies lost ground to Chelsea following the 3-2 defeat against Manchester United.

Anthony Gordon and Lewis Hall managed to get on the scoresheet for Eddie Howe’s side, but it was in vain as Erik ten Hag’s claimed all three points.

The defeat was the Magpies’ first in the last four Premier League outings, with all eyes on the final day if the club are to feature in a European competition once more next season.

Howe’s side sit three points behind Chelsea following their win against Brighton and Hove Albion, with the Red Devils level on points going into the final match week.

One player in particular excelled at Old Trafford, staking his claim for a more regular place in the side ahead of next season.

Lewis Hall’s stats against Manchester United

In the last four matches, Howe has finally selected Hall to feature from the start at left-back – with the youngster taking advantage of the club’s recent troubles with injuries.

He’s gone from strength to strength in recent matches, with his display against United last night up there with one of his best in the black and white of Newcastle.

Hall featured for the entirety of the contest, completing 54 passes at a completion rate of 86% – with the 19-year-old completing more passes than midfield maestro Bruno Guimaraes.

The current Chelsea loanee, whose deal turns permanent this summer, also managed 86 touches, 20 more than the Brazilian who like the majority of the side failed to have a real grip on the encounter.

Given the quality of his recent performances for the club, questions must be asked as to why it’s taken Howe this long to hand the youngster a consistent run in the first team.

His strike in stoppage time was the icing on the cake for his brilliant display, which saw him be awarded a 8/10 match rating by Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder, with the writer dubbing his effort as a 'wonder strike'.

Why Hall is now undroppable for Newcastle

There’s no denying, the left-back position has been a weak spot for the Magpies in recent months, with regular centre-back Dan Burn featuring there in an unnatural role, with sides starting to target his lack of pace in the channels.

However, Hall has certainly staked his claim for a permanent role on the left of the club’s defence, with the youngster only going to develop further given his tender age.

He looked to form an excellent partnership with winger Gordon down the left-hand side last night, giving the supporters a glimpse of what could be an exciting partnership for many years to come.

Gordon has been excellent for Howe’s side this campaign, grabbing his 11th league goal of the season last night – cementing himself as one of the first names on the team sheet in recent weeks.

However, following his recent outings, Hall looks as undroppable as the 23-year-old, with the defender having the potential to transform into one of the best attacking full-backs in the Premier League – his £28m fee looking like a potential bargain.

Lamine Yamal, Endrick and 25 NXGN wonderkids to watch in the 2024-25 Champions League

A number of young players have made a name for themselves in Europe's premier club competition, and the latest batch could be the best yet

The Champions League is back, and with a brand new look. But whether you are in favour of, against or merely struggling to understand the 'Swiss Model', rest assured that plenty will stay the same about Europe's biggest and best club competition; Real Madrid will keep winning from impossible positions, Paris Saint-Germain will embarrass themselves in the knockout rounds, and those nights at Anfield will continue to be spine-tingling.

One other thing the new league format will not take away is the potential for young players to prove themselves on the biggest stage. A number of teenage talents have gone from relative unknowns to household names in the blink of an eye thanks to their Champions League performances in recent years, and the 2024-25 edition should be no different.

So who are the players to look out for over the next nine months? GOAL runs through the NXGN-eligible teenagers (born 2005 or later) who are set to light up the Champions League this time around…

Follow GOAL's official WhatsApp channel!Join nowGetty Images SportAdam Aznou (Bayern Munich)

Though Aznou is yet to make his first-team debut for Bayern, he is regarded as one of the top talents within the Allianz Arena, and is expected to be part of Vincent Kompany's plans as the campaign wears on.

Having joined from Barcelona in 2022, the 18-year-old left-back is being tipped to step into Alphonso Davies boots if the Real Madrid target leaves at the end of his contract next summer. In the meantime, he has already become a senior international after making his Morocco debut in the September international break.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesIsaac Babadi (PSV)

Capable of playing both in central midfield and on the left-hand side of the attack, Babadi made 22 appearances in all competitions for PSV last term, and continues to impress when given the opportunity by Peter Bosz.

Previously linked with Premier League clubs, the 19-year-old signed a new four-year deal towards the end of last season, and some strong showings in the Champions League could spark further interest in his services.

AFPEliesse Ben Seghir (Monaco)

Ben Seghir broke onto the scene in December 2022 when he stepped off the bench to make his Monaco debut against Auxerre and turned the game on its head, scoring twice to secure a 3-2 win. Though injuries have impacted his development since, the attacking midfielder is now established as a starter at Stade Louis II.

A four-time Morocco international, the 19-year-old is light on his feet and a bag of tricks with an eye for the spectacular, and if he can stay fit, this should be Ben Seghir's true breakout campaign.

Though he will not turn 17 until October, Bouaddi already has 20 first-team appearances to his name at Lille, where he was described as the best academy product since Eden Hazard even before he became the club's youngest-ever player just under a year ago.

A holding midfielder who has also spent time filling in at centre-back, the France youth international figures to be one of the youngest players in this season's Champions League, but also one of the most promising.

O time fica na frente apenas de Fluminense e Atlético-GO. O Flamengo, para se ter noção, finaliza 16 vezes por duelo.

Atlético-GO – 9,11 finalizações por jogo

Atlético-GO – 13,05finalizações sofridas por jogo

Atualmente, a equipe ocupa a sexta posição no Brasileirão.

Man Utd and Ratcliffe eyeing £35m cut-price replacement for Raphaël Varane

With Raphael Varane set to leave Manchester United this summer, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly turned his attention to landing a replacement for the Frenchman in a cut-price deal.

Man Utd transfer news

Varane confirmed the news that he would be leaving Manchester United at the end of the season following two years at Old Trafford. The Frenchman at least ended on a high, having started in the Red Devils' shock FA Cup final victory over Manchester City. Running out 2-1 winners, Varane bowed out in the best way possible.

Now, however, those at Old Trafford have turned their attention towards finding a replacement for the former Real Madrid star, with the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite and Antonio Silva already mentioned. Branthwaite, in particular, would be an interesting option given the season that he has just enjoyed at Everton as a clear standout. As the Toffees look to ease financial concerns too, United could swoop in.

Alas, Everton aren't the only club in need of funds. According to Charlie Gordon of the Daily Express, Sporting CP in Portugal need to raise money and Manchester United are considering a move for Ousmane Diomande in a deal that could be worth as little as £35m. What's more, with interest reportedly cooling elsewhere in the Premier League, Ratcliffe should be perfectly placed to land his Varane replacement.

Still just 20 years old and coming off the back of an excellent season in Portugal, Diomande could quickly prove to be the bargain of the summer if United make their move.

"Elite" Diomande can fill Varane void

Whilst Varane's time at Manchester United may go down as what might have been at some points after injury troubles, replacing a World Cup and Champions League winner is still no easy task, but signing Diomande would do exactly that. Described as "elite" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, the central defender can step into the Frenchman's role and more with a move to Old Trafford.

As Ratcliffe looks to finally transform Manchester United into a club capable of competing among the Premier League's very best, signings such as Diomande would go a long way.

The Sporting man ticks the box for his age, potential and current ability, which is particularly important when rebuilding Erik ten Hag's backline, given that Jonny Evans is 36 years old and Harry Maguire is 31. Only time will tell whether Diomande is the man that Ratcliffe turns toward, however, with a number of options linked with a summer move.

Ferguson out for six weeks with stress fracture to his back

Coach Gary Stead hopeful the pacer would return to the side before the end of the season

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Dec-2020New Zealand are hopeful injured pacer Lockie Ferguson, who has been ruled out of the Pakistan series at home, will return to the side before the end of the season. Ferguson has been diagnosed with a partial stress fracture to his lumbar spine and will require four to six weeks of rest before returning to training, according to a media release. After his IPL stint in Dubai, Ferguson played in the three-match T20I series against West Indies – where he picked up seven wickets – when an injury to the left side of his back surfaced and subsequent scans confirmed the partial fracture. While he will not need surgery, he will need to undergo a period of rest and rehabilitation before considering return to play. He is also unlikely to turn up for Auckland for the entire Super Smash season which runs from late December through to the final on February 14, the release said.”We’re all really feeling for Lockie,” New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said. “Injuries are certainly part of our sport, but to get something like this when you’re at the very top of your game is especially disappointing. The pace and skill he’s been able to consistently produce has made him one of the very best white-ball bowlers in the world and a huge asset for the Blackcaps.”Lockie has a great attitude and I know he’s up for the fight so he’ll get stuck into the rehab and we’re still hopeful he may get back on the park at the back end of summer.”As thrilling as it is to be an express fast bowler, Ferguson has already felt the strain it puts on his body. He endured a rough first stint in whites during his Test debut against Australia in Perth last year, a calf problem curtailed his bowling output to just 11 first-innings overs and ruled him out of the rest of the tour as well as the subsequent home Tests against India. He was also not part of the squad for the recently-concluded Tests against West Indies.New Zealand’s home season includes a five-match T20I tour by Australia in February, before concluding with Bangladesh’s visit in March.

Club would now accept £40m Liverpool bid for “excellent” Amorim favourite

Liverpool could now reportedly complete the signing of an "excellent" transfer target for a cut-price amount in the summer window.

Liverpool summer transfer targets

The Reds spent last summer solely focusing on rebuilding their midfield, and while they now look well-stocked in that area of the pitch, other signings are needed elsewhere at the end of the season. Centre-back looks like a key position to strengthen in, not only because Joel Matip is likely to leave when his contract runs out, but also due to Ibrahima Konate's constant battle to stay fit for long periods.

Sporting CP ace Goncalo Inacio has been continually linked with a move Liverpool this summer, with various rumours emerging throughout this season. The 22-year-old is seen as one of Europe's leading young defenders, playing a key role in his side's likely soon-to-be title-winning campaign in the Primeira Liga.

jean-clair-todibo-goncalo-inacio-liverpool-opinion

If Ruben Amorim comes in as Jurgen Klopp's replacement, the chance of the Reds snapping up Inacio could be further increased, and they have also been backed to make a move for his teammate Marcus Edwards. He is seen as a potential replacement for Luis Diaz if the Colombian leaves, scoring four goals and bagging three assists in the league so far this season.

Bayer Leverkusen left-back Alejandro Grimaldo has also emerged as a target for Liverpool, with the 28-year-old basking in the glory of being crowned Bundesliga champions over the weekend. His tally of nine goals and 12 assists from his wing-back role in 2023/24 sums up the attacking quality he possesses.

Goncalo Inacio transfer news

According to Football Insider, Sporting would accept a bid from Liverpool of just £40m this summer, despite reportedly having a €60m (£51.2m) release clause in their star defender's current deal. Sporting are renowned for inserting "very high" clauses into deals, but will then negotiate below that figure for a player Amorim starts week in week out.

maxence-laroix-goncalo-inacio-liverpool-opinion

It does appear as though Inacio is a genuine target for Liverpool, considering the number of times he has been linked with a switch to Anfield, and there are so many positives when it comes to imagining him in a Reds shirt. Perhaps the biggest immediate plus point is the fact that he could join alongside Amorim, with the Sporting boss the red-hot favourite to be Klopp's successor this summer. The pair know each other so well, meaning it could be a seamless transition for both.

Still only 22, Inacio would be viewed as not only a key man from the off, but also Virgil van Dijk's long-term heir in the left-sided centre-back role, gradually growing in influence over time. This season, he has averaged 2.4 clearances per game in the Europa League, as well as scoring three times in the competition for good measure. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has called him an "excellent central defender".

Liverpool could now sign "fantastic" attacking star for just £30m this summer

Potential next Reds manager Ruben Amorim loves him.

By
Henry Jackson

Apr 14, 2024

A classy user of the ball who can also play at left-back, the Portugal international would suit Liverpool's possession-based style, and he could mature into one of the finest defenders in the world, as long as he can avoid picking up serious injuries. The fact that he could even be signed for as little as £40m makes it a no-brainer of a transfer pursuit.

“I want to give him a little bit of space at the back end of the Border-Gavaskar; obviously baby pending,” Bailey said. “We’ll work through that with Pat and obviously the selection panel and the medical team…but I know he’s very keen.”Hazlewood, meanwhile, hadn’t quite recovered in time from the calf injury that ended his series but should be able to take his place in the one-day side.Allrounders Aaron Hardie and Matthew Short, the latter who scored a 54-ball 109 for Adelaide Strikers two days ago, have also been included in the 15-player squad.Hardie is not currently bowling for Perth Scorchers in the BBL due to injury while Josh Inglis is also recovering from a calf strain he picked up while sub fielding during the Test series.Nathan Ellis has tipped out the likes of Sean Abbott and Xavier Bartlett to be the fourth pace bowler behind the big three.”This is a balanced and experienced squad with the core having been involved in the previous one-day World Cup, the West Indies series, last year’s successful tour of the UK and the more recent Pakistan home series,” Bailey said. “It offers a variety of options for touring management depending on opposition and the conditions that may present in Pakistan.”Alex Carey also finds a spot after making a successful return to the ODI side against England last year with scores of 74 and 77 not out having previously lost his place after one game of the 2023 World Cup. He could play as a specialist batter, as he did once in the England series, but also provides wicketkeeping back-up for Inglis.Adam Zampa is the one frontline spinner but will be supported by Short and Glenn Maxwell.Among younger players who featured against Pakistan earlier in the series, where Australia lost 2-1, Jake Fraser-McGurk has not made the cut amid an extended lean run which has included a top score of 26 in eight innings for Melbourne Renegades. Cooper Connolly, who was selected for the Sri Lanka Test tour, also can’t find a space.Australia will play a one-off ODI against Sri Lanka on February 13 before heading to Pakistan and discussions remain ongoing as to whether there will be another warm-up game. They are grouped with England (February 22), South Africa (February 25) and Afghanistan (February 28).The first semi-final will take place in Dubai on March 4 with the second in Lahore on March 5 following confirmation of the hybrid model due to India not traveling to Pakistan.
