Russell, Narine, 84 for 8 – Kolkata Knight Riders are in a hole, and Delhi Capitals will look to keep them there

The Capitals won their earlier exchange, and are the table-toppers at this stage

Karthik Krishnaswamy23-Oct-20206:51

Should Eoin Morgan bat ahead of Dinesh Karthik?

Big pictureRemember this game? And this? And this one?The Kolkata Knight Riders probably had no business winning any of those games, but win is what they did. They have only won two other games so far this season, and if those jailbreaks were taken away from them, they wouldn’t be where they are on the table.Where they are is fourth, and within the playoffs’ range, but that can change quickly. There are teams currently outside the top four who have built a bit of momentum, and they know they can displace the Knight Riders, who have a distinct air of vulnerability about them after suffering a walloping at the hands of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. That defeat left the Knight Riders nursing the worst net run rate (-0.828) of all teams in the competition. How do you bounce back from the lows of 84 for 8? How do you do that without Andre Russell or Sunil Narine, or possibly both? How do you begin the process of bouncing back when you’re up against the in-form Delhi Capitals, who are gunning for a top-two finish and are themselves looking to bounce back from – a less severe but still wounding – defeat? There aren’t easy answers to these, but the Knight Riders will have to answer them soon. If they do, you might come to talk in hushed tones about those wins snatched from the jaws of defeat. “It’s the sign of a great team,” you might say, “when they win even when they aren’t playing well.”If the Knight Riders slide away from the playoffs spots, however, you will look at those wins differently. You will look at them and say they were warning signs of a team in decline. In the newsRussell injured his hamstring in the tied game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad and didn’t feature against the Royal Challengers. Narine was free to play that game, having had his action cleared, but he missed out because of what his captain Eoin Morgan described as a “niggle”. The fitness status of the two West Indians ahead of the game against the Capitals is not yet clear.Previous meetingHalf-centuries from Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant powered the Capitals to 228, but that total didn’t appear entirely safe in early-season Sharjah. Despite slipping to 122 for 6, the Knight Riders still came close in their chase, thanks to Morgan’s 18-ball 44 and Rahul Tripathi’s 16-ball 36. It came down to 26 from the last over, and Marcus Stoinis sealed victory for the Capitals with a pinpoint yorker to bowl Tripathi.Shikhar Dhawan brings out his trademark celebration•BCCILikely XIsDelhi Capitals: 1 Prithvi Shaw, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 Rishabh Pant (wk), 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Shimron Hetmyer, 7 Axar Patel, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Anrich Nortje/Daniel Sams, 11 Tushar DeshpandeKolkata Knight Riders: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Rahul Tripathi, 3 Nitish Rana, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6 Andre Russell/Tom Banton, 7 Pat Cummins/Sunil Narine, 8 Lockie Ferguson, 9 Prasidh Krishna, 10 Varun Chakravarthy, 11 Kuldeep YadavStrategy punts Shikhar Dhawan (69*, 57, 101*, 106*) has scored exactly half of the Capitals’ runs over their last four matches, so his wicket – particularly with the rest of the top order suffering a dip in form – becomes crucial for the Knight Riders. How do they get him early? Well, since the start of the 2019 season, fast bowlers have only dismissed Dhawan four times within the powerplay overs. He averages 84.75 against pace while striking at a healthy 135.05. His strike rate against spin in this phase (159.82) is even better, but he’s been dismissed six times in 112 balls by the slower bowlers, so the Knight Riders could look to attack him with Varun Chakravarthy or – if he plays – Narine taking the new ball from one end. Kuldeep Yadav has only bowled nine powerplay overs in his entire IPL career, but he’s not a bad candidate to try against Dhawan. In all T20 meetings, Dhawan has scored just 34 off 37 balls against Yadav, while being dismissed twice. The Knight Riders, however, might look to hold Yadav back for Rishabh Pant, who’s scored 23 off 21 balls against the left-arm wristspinner while being dismissed twice. Dinesh Karthik has a shocking record against legspinners this season: 14 runs off 18 balls, five dismissals. Against all other types of bowling, he has scored 131 runs at a more-than-decent average of 32.75 and a more-than-decent strike rate of 135.05. Morgan has also struggled against legspin: one dismissal in 55 balls, but . The Capitals don’t have a legspinner in their first-choice XI, but if they wanted to give Sandeep Lamichhane an opportunity ahead of the playoffs, this wouldn’t be a bad time to do it.Stats that matter The Capitals are yet to win a match in Abu Dhabi this season. This will be their third game at the venue. The Knight Riders (6.73) have the worst powerplay run rate of all teams this season. That low scoring rate isn’t necessarily because their openers have traded explosiveness for stability – the Knight Riders haven’t finished a single powerplay wicketless this season. They are up against a Capitals attack that has consistently taken wickets in the powerplay, picking up 17 at a best-in-the-competition strike rate of 21.18. The early overs of the Knight Riders innings, therefore, could be a key phase in the game. The Knight Riders have been poor in the powerplay with the ball as well. They have the worst economy rate of all teams in this phase (8.260 and have only taken six wickets in 60 overs, at an average of 82.66. Given that they were only defending 84, the Knight Riders’ refusal to bowl Lockie Ferguson in the powerplay against the Royal Challengers was perplexing, but they were probably going by the data, if a little too rigidly. In the IPL, Ferguson has a middle-overs (7-15) economy rate of 5.05 and has taken six wickets in that phase at an average of 14.33. In all other phases, he has an economy rate of 10.57 while taking only three wickets at 74.00. If they play, it will be Yadav’s 100th T20 game and Ajinkya Rahane’s 200th. Harshal Patel is two wickets short of 100 in T20s.

Leeds have "inquired" about signing £55k-p/w star who’d thrive with Gnonto

da aposte e ganhe: Leeds United are preparing to take on Southampton at Wembley in the play-off final on Sunday, with a place in next season's Premier League up for grabs.

da spicy bet: The Whites can seal an instant return to the top-flight by picking up a win against the Saints this weekend, which would then leave Daniel Farke and his team preparing for a huge summer transfer window.

They would need to bolster the squad to give themselves the best possible chance of avoiding an immediate drop back down to the Championship, which was the fate suffered by Burnley, Sheffield United, and Luton Town this year.

The Yorkshire-based outfit are already reportedly eyeing up a new right-back to add to the group should they win promotion to the Premier League on Sunday…

Leeds United's interest in Bundesliga ace

According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Leeds have made contact over a possible deal to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Marius Wolf.

The reporter states that the Whites have "inquired" about a swoop for the German full-back, whose contract with the Bundesliga giants is set to expire this summer.

He states that the £55k-per-week ace is a "serious" option for Farke to bring to Elland Road ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, if they are in the Premier League.

However, Plettenberg adds that they face competition from clubs in Spain, Italy, and Saudi Arabia, which suggests that there could be a fight to land his services on a free transfer over the coming weeks and months.

If Leeds do win the race for his signature, though, then Farke could land an exciting partner for Italian forward Wilfried Gnonto down the right flank next time.

Why Marius Wolf could thrive with Wilfried Gnonto

The 28-year-old defender, who has played 22 matches in the Bundesliga for Dortmund this season, is a progressive and forward-thinking full-back who can bomb forward to link up with the former Zurich star in attack.

Wolf ranks within the top 15% of full-backs in the Men's Big 5 Leagues and European competitions over the last 365 days for progressive carries per 90 (2.95), as well as the top 26% for progressive passes per 90 (4.54).

Wilfried Gnonto

This suggests that the attack-minded dynamo, who has still won 51% of his defensive ground duels in the league this season, is a very progressive player who consistently looks to drive his team up the pitch to find teammates in dangerous positions.

He also ranks within the top 19% of his positional peers in the aforementioned criteria for shot-creating actions per 90 (2.84), which illustrates how often Wolf can make things happen for his team in the final third.

This could allow him and Gnonto to thrive as an attacking pair down the right side as the Italian winger is a clinical attacker who could make the most of the Dortmund man's progressive play.

Leeds lining up swoop for 16-goal EFL star who'd thrive with Rutter

The Whites have been linked with a summer deal to sign the impressive centre-forward.

ByDan Emery May 20, 2024

The 20-year-old star scored eight goals from 5.47 xG in the regular Championship season – the highest overperformance on xG in the entire squad – and this speaks to his ruthless nature in front of goal.

He also ranks within the top 9% of his positional peers in the second tier for progressive passes received per 90 (11.32), which suggests that Gnonto is constantly in good positions to receive the ball from deep.

The former Inter youngster could, therefore, thrive with Wolf's impressive ability to make progressive passes and create shooting opportunities from right-back, which is why they could be an exciting pair for Leeds if the club snap him up on a free transfer.

Zimbabwe secure draw in high-scoring Test on rain-hit day

There were three Boxing Day Tests going on simultaneously. The one in Bulawayo, between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, didn’t have the appeal of Melbourne. But for a brief while on the final evening, it did have some of the thrill from Centurion. Zimbabwe suffered a collapse of 4 for 15 in the second innings, and were still 25 runs behind Afghanistan, who had gone 113 ahead in the first. However, the prospect of any dramatic finish quickly vanished as Sean Williams and Craig Ervine not only wiped the deficit out, but also ensured no further damage. The game inevitably ended in a draw, but provided plenty of opportunities for players to fill their boots. Hashmatullah Shahidi scored a career-best 246, while Afsar Zazai hit his maiden Test hundred as Afghanistan piled up 699, their highest total in the format.Related

  • Ervine urges Zimbabwe to improve their fielding: 'The outcome could've been different had we taken our chances'

  • Stats – Zimbabwe (586), Afghanistan (699) reach record highs in Bulawayo run-fest

Afghanistan had themselves lost 6 for 20 to close their innings in search of quick runs. But on what was otherwise a lifeless pitch, Zimbabwe’s spinners Brian Bennett and Williams did get some turn. Bennett bagged five of the six wickets to fall – that followed a knock of 110* – and the fun began when he had Shahidi lbw.On the fifth ball of the 193rd over, Shahid went across the stumps to try and lap sweep, but was struck in front. Next ball, Azmatullah Omarzai skied one back to Bennett, who was left on a hat-trick. Bennett bowled the hat-trick ball to Shahidullah to start the 195th over, but the batter drove it to deep point. But Williams had Zia-ur-Rehman caught for 5 next over, as substitute fielder Tadiwanashe Marumani took a great catch while running forward from long-on. AM Ghazanfar then bashed Bennett for six, only for Bennett to be on a hat-trick again. Ghazanfar swung one to long-on, while Naveed Zadran bottom-edged on to the stumps. But Bennett was denied again, as Zahir Khan blocked one safely. Next ball, though, Bennett completed his five-for when he trapped Zahir to wrap the Afghanistan innings up.Zimbabwe’s second innings began in the afternoon session, when enough time was left for a surprise result. Perhaps seeing the Zimbabwe spinners get help from the surface, Afghanistan asked Ghazanfar to share the new ball with Naveed Zadran. But Ben Curran led Zimbabwe’s counterpunch, as they smashed 32 runs in the first five overs. That included four boundaries, including three off Ghazanfar. Curran slashed, swept and swung the offspinner for four each, even as Joylord Gumbie also hit a boundary in a much more patient start. Naveen, Zia-ur-Rehman, Omarzai and Zahir Khan checked Zimbabwe’s momentum thereafter, although Zimbabwe still went wicketless to tea.Zia and Zahir did find turn, though, and after multiple lbw appeals against Gumbie were turned down, Zahir finally had Gumbie edge one to slip. A length ball around sixth stump hinted to turn in, and Gumbie pushed forward only to get an outside edge. The opening partnership of 73 was broken, but just one ball later, the players were off due to rain. The break lasted nearly 40 minutes, but that didn’t affect Afghanistan. Third ball into the resumption, Curran was run out for 41 when he tapped Zia towards midwicket and set for a single. But his partner Takudzwanashe Kaitano seemed to have refused the single a little too late, and the throw from Shahidullah found Curran well short at the wicketkeeper’s end.Next over, Kaitano looked to paddle sweep Zahir, who was bowling from around the wicket. The ball landed on a full length on middle, and didn’t seem to turn, as Kaitano missed his attempted sweep, for which the length seemed a bit too full. But the most aesthetically pleasing dismissal came when Ghazanfar cleaned Dion Myers up in the 25th over.He drifted one in, and pitched it full on middle and off to draw the batter forward. Myers looked to defend the line of the ball, but it turned away to uproot the off stump. Zimbabwe were 88 for 4 at that stage, and still behind Afghanistan, who smelled a miracle. But the experienced Williams and Ervine took their side to safety by adding 54 in less than ten overs. They took Zimbabwe past Afghanistan at the start of the 30th over, as Ervine drilled Zahir through the covers, and the batters ran four. There were plenty of footmarks for the Afghanistan spinners to work with, but they couldn’t strike any further, as the game ended in a draw, and the two-match series remained locked at 0-0.

Benfica ready to sell £26k-p/w star who Man Utd scout nearly every week

Manchester United may be about to strike lucky after it emerged that one of their long-term targets is set to be sold this summer.

United need change after Palace humiliation

A heavy 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Crystal Palace underlined Manchester United's need for change on and off the pitch this summer.

Manager Erik ten Hag seems a dead man walking despite vowing to fight on, while there are going to have to be major changes to the playing staff too. As it stands, the Red Devils sit 8th in the Premier League and could end the season without any European football to look forward to next season, after finishing bottom of their Champions League group this time around.

Sofyan Amrabat's loan will not be made permanent, with the Moroccan having proved a disaster at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Anthony Martial, Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane are all out of contract in the summer and will likely be allowed to leave, which will free up significant wages.

The Manchester Evening News claim that as many as 21 players could leave the club this summer in a major clear out, and while this may be optimistic it seems certain that there will be change in defence.

Benfica star set to leave

That comes courtesy of Portuguese outlet Record, who report that Benfica are gearing up for another big sale this summer.

The newspaper [via Sport Witness] claim that the Lions are "planning a significant sale", and have decided that Antonio Silva will be the player sacrificed to continue their transfer policy, having waved goodbye to the likes of Darwin Nunez, Enzo Fernandez and Goncalo Ramos in recent transfer windows.

There has been significant speculation over Joao Neves, but Benfica are keen to balance their books with the sale of defender Silva instead, who is liked by plenty of Europe's top clubs.

Manchester United are named as one of the chief interested parties, with "United having officials watch almost every Benfica match" to keep an eye on the youngster. Alongside the Red Devils, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and PSG are all also named as those keen on the 20-year-old, who still has three years left to run on his £26k-per week contract in Portugal's second city.

His deal has a 100m euro release clause (£86m) but it is unlikely that Benfica will demand that amount to part ways with him, though it is added that they are yet to set a price tag on the Portuguese starlet. Still just 20 and with a wealth of experience under his belt, Silva seems destined for the very top. But he would come at a hefty price.

"Deal is happening" – Newcastle agree terms with "exceptional" Howe target

With the summer transfer window approaching, Newcastle United's search for a new shot-stopper has continued, with an agreement now reportedly reached to land Eddie Howe's preferred choice.

Newcastle transfer news

With Martin Dubravka 35 years old and Nick Pope 32 years old, it's no surprise that Newcastle have turned their attention to signing a future number one for Howe's side. Pope's injury adds a sense of unpredictability when it comes to his form upon his return too, making a new goalkeeper even more important this summer.

Reporter shares what he's now heard on "incredible" Newcastle ace's future

Ruthless from PIF…

ByTom Cunningham May 16, 2024

In that regard, it seemed as though Newcastle's first choice was Valencia's Giorgi Mamardashvili, with reports suggesting that PIF had overruled Howe to target the 23-year-old, who has impressed in La Liga. Fresh updates even indicated that the Magpies were in pole position to secure his signature. It now seems as though those at St James' Park have opted to listen to Howe's preference, however, and turn their attention elsewhere.

Valencia stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili

According to Sky Sports' James Green via AFCstuff on X, Newcastle have reached an agreement with Aaron Ramsdale over joining the club this summer, who is Howe's preferred choice.

The Arsenal number two is in desperate need of consistent game time after losing his place to David Raya in the current campaign and now, Newcastle have seemingly offered him the chance to get exactly that in a contract that could match his current reported salary of £120k-a-week.

If an agreement is reached with Ramsdale, Newcastle will now need to turn their attention to finding the right price with Arsenal to secure a summer switch for the England international.

"Exceptional" Ramsdale can succeed Pope

Competition is key for any squad vying for a place in the Premier League's top six and having both Pope and Ramsdale to choose from would be the healthiest form of that for Howe. That said, the latter won't be arriving to sit on the bench in a replication of his current Arsenal role. He'll rightly want to be number, which will make Howe's decision an interesting one should the deal take place. Both shot-stoppers certainly have their strong points.

Despite losing his place in the current Arsenal side, Ramsdale earned plenty of praise from Mikel Arteta earlier this season. The Spaniard said via TNT Sport: “He’s been exceptional around the place with the situation. Like everybody. We love him more for sure. We have him every day. We know him, we know his character and we are really happy to have him.

“I don’t think I’m the one to answer the question about Aaron Ramsdale’s quality because I’m the one who signed him when everyone else was questioning that decision. So I don’t think I’m the one to answer that question."

Kane Richardson on missing IPL: couldn't risk missing birth of my first child

The difficulty of travelling at the moment was a key reason behind the pace bowler’s decision

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Sep-20200:38

Matthew Hayden – RCB too reliant on Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers

Kane Richardson hopes he gets another chance to appear in the IPL in the future but said he could not risk missing the birth of his first child following his withdrawal from the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad for this year’s tournament. The limitations around global travel amid the Covid-19 pandemic was one of the key factors in Richardson’s decision, knowing that it would be difficult to jump on a plane from the UAE to get home to Australia at short notice. He has been replaced at RCB by Australia team-mate Adam Zampa. He will return home after the limited-overs tour of England and undertake the mandatory two-week quarantine before heading back to South Australia.ALSO READ: Key to Australia’s T20I success: Spin twins, and return of David Warner, Steven Smith“It’s always difficult to withdraw from a competition like the IPL, it’s the pinnacle domestic competition in the world but when I really sat down and thought about it’s definitely the right one with all that’s going on in the world at the moment,” he said.”Just the challenge around getting home on time for something as unpredictable as the birth of a child, I couldn’t risk missing that. It’s disappointing to miss the IPL but hopefully there are opportunities ahead for that and don’t think I’d ever be able to live with missing the birth of my first kid.”We’ve had five months of but hopefully cricket will always be there. The main thing for me is to support my wife, as cricketers we are away for a lot of things but there comes a time when you prioritise your family over anything else and at the moment in the world a lot of people are doing that.”Over the next couple of weeks Richardson’s focus is a return to international cricket for the first time in five months. He has been an integral part of Australia’s T20I side, forming the pace attack alongside Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, as they have climbed to No. 1 in the world and hopes to retain that role.Kane Richardson is his delivery stride•Getty Images

“Coming off five months of doing nothing you don’t really know until you start, but if look back over the last 12 months I’ve feel I’ve done the job so it’s been a really nice period for the T20 team,” he said. “You never feel 100% comfortable behind those guys but hopefully my name is called on Friday night.”Given the enlarged nature of the squad for this tour inside a biosecure bubble, Richardson is one of a host of pace-bowling options available including the uncapped Riley Meredith and Daniel Sams.”Everyone brings a little bit of variety and their individual strengths, think that’s what you want in a bowling attack. I feel like we have all bases covered,” Richardson said. Most of Australia’s batsmen have enjoyed time in the middle over the four intersquad warm-up matches played at the Ageas Bowl and Richardson picked out Marnus Labuschagne’s 50-ball century as the standout performance although he will find it tough to break into the T20 side.”T20 probably hasn’t been his format so to get the opportunity in that last game he showed a few people what he could do and probably some surprise in the field with the shots he was playing, was almost batting like a mini AB de Villiers someone said. That’s a fair endorsement.”
