8/10 Ange signing has now made himself as undroppable as Son at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur are now well and truly in pole position to secure a Champions League spot next season.

This has been a superb weekend for the Lilywhites who after watching their closest rivals for fourth spot in Aston Villa draw 3-3 with Brentford, secured a much-needed win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Spurs scored three goals of their own, but unlike Villa, conceded just one in what was a relatively routine win for Ange Postecoglou's side.

The Londoners have only won two of their last four league outings but are now unbeaten in their last three, leapfrogging Villa into fourth spot in the process.

Just days ago the club drew with West Ham but this was a far more polished performance, notably in attack.

Murillo fired into his own net before stunning strikes from both Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven wrapped up the points. Heung-min Son registered an assist but was relatively quiet in a goalscoring sense compared to some of the outstanding performances we've seen in 2023/24 to date.

Son's performance vs Forest

This has been a season of transition for the South Korean who hasn't just taken on the goalscoring burden left behind by Harry Kane but also filled the leadership void.

wilfried-gnonto-kane-son-tottenham-opinion

Of course, Huge Lloris also took his leave last summer and with it handed the captain's armband to Son.

What has he done with it? Well, the attacker has been nothing short of a sensation. We'd expect nothing less from one of Tottenham's greatest players.

Son didn't find the net on Sunday against Forest but he did take his seasonal tally of assists to nine after laying the ball off for Van de Ven to hammer home.

On top of that, the 31-year-old has found the net on 15 occasions this term during a sensational campaign yet again for the winger.

A wide player by trade, Son has found himself occupying the role of a central striker more regularly this term. It was the position he played in against Nuno Santo's men this weekend, yet he was unfortunate not to beat Mats Selz in the visitors' net.

The former Bayer Leverkusen man hit the woodwork and was denied in some style by that man Selz late on. It looked like the ball was heading into the far corner, only for the Forest stopper to sprawl to his left to deny the South Korean.

On another day he could have had a few goals, only substantiating his place as an undroppable figure in the side further. However, Timo Werner should also hold a similar tag after what was one of his finest displays in a Spurs shirt yet.

Timo Werner's performance in numbers

The German's arrival on a loan deal back in January raised eyebrows. After all, this is a man who had been made a meme during his time with Chelsea.

Werner only found the net 23 times in 89 appearances on the blue side of London and truth be told, never looked up for it in English football.

Well, the 28-year-old has hardly been prolific this time around either, scoring two goals in 11 outings for Spurs, but he certainly looks more at ease in Postecoglou's system, contributing to five strikes on the whole courtesy of three assists.

That was particularly the case against Forest where Werner looked an eternal danger for Neco Williams.

It was the Germany international who played the ball across the box for Murillo to fire into his own net. That was just one of many examples in which he found himself in a dangerous position down the left channel, delivering what was an "absolutely superb" performance in the eyes of Spurs presenter Ben Haines.

In total, Werner attempted five crosses, of which two came off, while his three dribble attempts were a marker of his willingness to make something happen.

A constant nuisance out wide, Football.London's Alasdair Gold handed the spritely winger an 8/10 match rating, writing: 'Soon after [the opening goal] he fired in another similar cross but Johnson's shot was saved. Sent in a few more dangerous balls in the second half and was a constant threat to Forest and was involved in the build-up to the third goal.'

Speaking after the game, the loanee admitted that he was loving life back in London, sparking talk that Spurs could and should well look to activate their option to buy him once the summer window opens.

On this evidence, they should do; it was a performance that could make him undroppable during the Premier League run-in.

The fall of Federico Chiesa: How the Italy winger went from Euro 2020 hero to Juventus outcast as Weston McKennie and more become casualties of the Thiago Motta revolution

The Bianconeri's new boss is overseeing a ruthless clear-out in Turin as he looks to put the Old Lady back on her perch

Federico Chiesa was just 22 when he inspired Italy to victory at Euro 2020. For a player coming off the back of a brilliant debut season at Juventus, superstardom beckoned. Alessio Tacchinardi was among those who tipped him to challenge for the Ballon d'Or "in three or four years".

Sadly, Chiesa's career has gone in a very different direction since then. The expected leader of the post-Cristiano Ronaldo era at Juventus has now been deemed surplus to requirements in Turin by new coach Thiago Motta.

Consequently, less than a fortnight before the start of the new Serie A season, one of the heroes of Italy's Euros win is searching for a new club – and worse still, no top teams seem to want to sign him. It's a shocking and sad turn of events for Chiesa, who was being courted by nearly all of Europe's elite after his heroics at Wembley in the summer of 2021.

Getty Images'Impossible to stop him'

Bayern Munich were particularly keen at the time, with then-coach Julian Nagelsmann making no secret of his admiration of the winger. "I've known about Chiesa for a long time," the German told , "and I find him exceptional because he often goes for a one-on-one, and then tries to shoot very quickly."

There was talk of the Bavarians bidding €100 million (£86m/$109m) for his services but, as far as Juve were concerned, Chiesa was priceless. He was to be the cornerstone of their new project, the dazzling dribbler that admired Ronaldo's work ethic and had developed a similar knack of stepping up to the mark in the biggest of games.

"After a season at Juve with Federico it is no longer a surprise for me," former team-mate Gigi Buffon told the after the Euros, "but it was not obvious when he arrived that he would be able to play at such a high level in a tournament like the European Championship. But he was unbelievable. In the final against England, it was impossible to stop him.

“When he joined Juve I didn't think he was so good, I have to be honest, but if you do those things at such a high level, then it means that you are really special."

AdvertisementGettyCruel twist of fate

However, Chiesa's development has since been cruelly checked by awfully bad lack. Not only has he been blighted by incessant injuries – Chiesa has been sidelined on 17 separate occasions over the past three seasons – he also had the dreadful misfortune to have Massimiliano Allegri as a manager.

Chiesa scored 14 times during his first season at Juve. He's managed just 18 since, though. The drastic dip in productivity can be partially attributed to the cruciate ligament tear he suffered in January 2022 that ruled him out of 10 months, but Allegri's painfully negative tactics caused Chiesa just as much pain.

Getty Images'Always the first to be taken off!'

Juve were utterly unwatchable for nearly every game of Allegri's second spell in Turin, with the coach rather indefensibly adopting a provincial mentality to managing the biggest club in the country. The net result was talented players being utterly wasted in a system ill-suited to their skillset, with Dusan Vlahovic, for example, so often left completely isolated as games passed him by.

Chiesa, though, was the biggest victim of Allegri's anti-football. One of the world's most exciting wingers was repeatedly played out of position as a central attacker and whenever he drifted wide, Allegri could be seen screaming at Chiesa to get back into the middle.

Consequently, the frustrated forward was regularly withdrawn for failing to do what was asked of him – usually around the 60-minute mark – and his displeasure was obvious. Indeed, on one occasion last season, he was even spotted shaking his head while lamenting, "I am always the first to be taken off!"

(C)Getty ImagesNew coach, no difference

In that context, Allegri's long overdue sacking should have been good news for Chiesa, particularly as the dour Tuscan's replacement, Thiago Motta, is a far more progressive coach who relies heavily on wingers in his preferred 4-1-4-1 formation. However, the 26-year-old is actually heading for the exit door himself now. In this regard, though, Chiesa arguably only has himself to blame.

Juve were keen to extend his contract – but on pretty much the same terms as his previous deal. Chiesa's agent has denied claims that he was seeking a significant pay rise for his client, but it's clear that that the two parties had wildly contrasting views on the winger's worth.

The net result is that Chiesa is set to become the first major casualty of the revolution that Motta and sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli are overseeing at Juve. He won't be the last, though.

Former England allrounder Laura Marsh has announced her retirement from all forms of cricket.Marsh, 33, called an end to her international career late last year after being left out of the England squad and has now cited the postponed launch of the Hundred as one of the key reasons behind her full retirement. She had been due to play for Oval Invincibles in the new format but the Covid-19 pandemic forced the ECB to move the opening season to 2021.”I have made the decision to retire from all forms of cricket. With the cancellation of The Hundred competition this year, I feel that it is the right time to hang up the boots,” Marsh wrote on Twitter. “I want to say a huge thank you to all the teams and organisations I have represented over the years.”I owe a huge amount to both Kent & Sussex for the role they played in my development as a player.”Big thanks also to The Surrey Stars, Sydney Sixers, NSW Breakers and Otago Sparks. Every team I played for developed me as a player and a person and I am fortunate to have made some lifelong friends and memories over the years.”

Ratcliffe ready to sell £350,000-a-week Man Utd player who regrets joining

da 888casino: Manchester United are ready to sell a £350,000-a-week player this summer who reportedly regrets joining the club.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s busy Sunday

da esoccer bet: Sir Jim Ratcliffe had a frantic Sunday, running the London Marathon before heading over to Wembley to watch Man Utd’s FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City.

When he arrived at Wembley for the second half, the Red Devils were in control of the tie before giving up a 3-0 lead to the Championship side. They almost threw it away in extra time but managed to prevail on penalties, with Ratcliffe saying prior to the game that patience is required among the Old Trafford fanbase.

“We're not there with football yet. One of the biggest problems with football is you get these new guys coming into the team, they're capable people but they're all on gardening leave. It's a big problem in football. The fans are impatient. It's a journey, they have to be patient. It's not a light switch. We will turn it around.”

Ratcliffe’s gardening leave comments appear to point towards Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth, who is wanted as sporting director at Old Trafford. Should Ashworth arrive in time for the summer, he may work closely with new technical director Jason Wilcox, who has joined from Southampton. A number of incomings and outgoings could be on the cards ahead of Ratcliffe’s first full season as co-owner, and by the looks of things, they are ready to sell one player.

Man Utd ready to sell Casemiro

According to Football Insider, Man Utd are ready to sell Casemiro this summer. This comes after a poor performance at Wembley where the Brazilian turned out at centre-back alongside Harry Maguire, missing his penalty in the shootout.

Sources have told FI that ‘United now feel Casemiro is unsuited to their side and are ready to consider offers for his services in the summer’, looking to get his huge £350,000-a-week base salary off the books at Old Trafford.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

Casemiro hasn’t exactly had the best of times in Manchester lately, with Jamie Redknapp slamming the 32-year-old midfielder after United's draw against Bournemouth earlier this month.

“I love watching him play. But right now he looks like he’s in Soccer Aid. He looks like he’s playing at such a pace where the game is a bit of fun and there’s celebrities coming on the pitch. No. This is the Premier League, you’ve got so much experience. That isn’t the case of anything else apart from running.”

ByTom Lever Apr 22, 2024

There have also been reports this season that Casemiro ‘regrets’ his decision to leave Real Madrid for Man Utd back in 2022, so parting ways with the midfielder could be best for all involved this summer. The Red Devils also appear to have replacements lined up for the Brazilian, with Fluminense defensive midfielder Andre a reported concrete target, so the coming months could represent a new era both on and off the pitch.

Leeds struck gold selling a talent who’s played less than Kalvin Phillips

Leeds United look to be the team in the driver's seat when it comes to clinching that final Championship automatic promotion place, with Millwall already fearful that they could be turned over by Daniel Farke's vibrant Whites this coming Sunday.

Whilst the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter have gained the most vocal plaudits, Ilia Gruev and Glen Kamara have been a formidable, if understated, duo in the holding midfield roles at Elland Road ensuring the defence are protected and the attackers are played into space.

The success stories of both of these new recruits means Leeds are even more content about their decision to offload one ex-Whites star now, who did – once upon a time – cost the West Yorkshire club a substantial £20m transfer fee.

Tyler Adams' time at Leeds

Tyler Adams was a standout performer for the Whites in the midst of very bleak times just last campaign, the 5 foot 9 defensive midfielder endearing himself to the hardened Elland Road masses last season even with relegation eventually staring the side in the face.

The American midfielder would go on to make 26 appearances in all competitions, before being offloaded in the wake of a mass exodus from West Yorkshire last summer to AFC Bournemouth.

This departure – after just one full campaign – would have stung from a Leeds point of view, especially with the expectation that Adams would go on to be a long-term successor to the hole left behind by Kalvin Phillips.

Described as being "monster" by journalist Kevin Koczwara when featuring for his national team that same season, which was seen at Elland Road further by Adams winning 57% of the duels that came his way from 24 top-flight games, the loss of their former £20m man is now more easily stomached with Gruev and Kamara coming into their own.

The loss of Adams is also now an after-thought when you consider how poorly the ex-Leeds number 12 has acclimatised to his new surroundings with the Cherries – the 25-year-old becoming a regular fixture in the treatment room on the South Coast as opposed to starring on the pitch, making just two appearances to date.

This has further resulted in his transfer value taking a serious hit, Leeds cashing in at the perfect possible time, although only breaking even on the move after selling him on for a £20m fee.

Tyler Adams' transfer value in 2024

Adams' value has already decreased to a lesser £15m as per Transfermarkt with the ex-RB Leipzig man just frustrated at how much of his time with the Cherries has been consumed by recurring injury troubles.

Leeds will have moved on from their former American asset quickly however, solid in the fact that Gruev and Kamara are their starters in the holding midfield roles with Archie Gray and Ethan Ampadu also competent in adding numbers and more strength to that area if needed.

2. Kalvin Phillips

3. Rio Ferdinand

4. Tyler Adams

Amazingly, Adams' injury issues have been so much of a hindrance that he has made fewer appearances than fellow expensive departure Phillips for Bournemouth.

The current West Ham loanee has made just ten appearances in the top flight this season after finally moving away from Manchester City. Despite that, he has now been left out of the latest England squad. It's safe to say life isn't always better after leaving Thorp Arch behind.

Leeds will continue attempting to be a runaway train in the Championship promotion race away from Adams and Phillips, however, blowing away teams on the way to what they hope will be an immediate surge back up to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, at the Vitality Stadium, Adams will just be aiming to get back to full fitness soon to revitalise his fading career.

CARY, N.C. – U.S. men's national team legend Jozy Altidore said he has no issue with Christian Pulisic requesting not to be a part of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup roster. Rather, the 35-year-old is excited to see the group that there for the tournament, ahead of what he describes as a "massive opportunity" for the national team program.

Speaking at The Soccer Tournament 2025, where he is coaching AFC Bournemouth, Altidore reflected on the AC Milan star’s absence and what it could mean for the USMNT heading into the continental competition.

"Listen, this is an opportunity for the team," Altidore told GOAL. "No one player replaces Christian, and if he needed the time off, he needed the time off. This is a chance for the group to come together and really step up with some big absences."

Altidore also shared his excitement about the next year of the footballing calendar for the country. Beginning in June 2025, the CONCACAF Gold Cup and FIFA Club World Cup will both be held in the U.S., and come next summer, the FIFA World Cup will follow in 2026, with matches played in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

"It’s a massive opportunity for soccer in this country, and a chance at a real rebirth for the game here. I’m excited, fans are excited, and the players are excited," he said. "It’s a real opportunity and I’m looking forward to it."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The U.S. roster for the Gold Cup this summer will feature plenty of new faces, amid an injury crisis, along with a handful of regulars being unavailable. In addition to Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, and Gio Reyna are unavailable due to the Club World Cup, while teammate of Pulisic's, Yunus Musah, is absent due to "personal reasons."

In the striker position, the U.S. is particularly going to be tested in the competition. Both Ricardo Pepi and Folarin Balogun are missing out due to injury, and after a tough performance in the March Nations League, Josh Sargent was left out of the squad this summer.

An area where Altidore excelled for the USMNT for over a decade, he believes it's a wide-open race at the moment – but with the group available for Mauricio Pochettino this summer, it's all about opportunity. MLS strikers Patrick Agyemang and Brian White are joined by uncapped 20-year-old prospect Damion Downs, Coventry's Haji Wright and FC Utrecht's Paxten Aaronson.

"The striker position is an interesting one," Altidore said. "It’s hard and not easy to play. There is a group of talented guys there, and any one of them could emerge. I’m looking forward to seeing them all."

  • WHAT ALTIDORE SAID ABOUT TST

Altidore was offered the coaching role with Bournemouth at the 7v7 tournament in North Carolina, thanks to U.S. international Tyler Adams – who plays for the senior team in England – and co-owner Michael B. Jordan, via a personal training initiative they collaborated on.

"The conversation stemmed from all of us at Sogility – a soccer tech training facility – and so Bournemouth was interested in partnering with businesses that are trying to push the envelope in soccer, and we started discussing how we could work together on this," Altidore explained. "There were some conversations with Michael's team, that's who I got in touch with originally, and he's getting more and more into soccer, so there was a lot of synergy there. Our groups are partnered on a couple of other ventures, so that just made a lot of sense."

The USMNT begins their June slate of matches with an international friendly against Turkey on Saturday as part of their preparation for the Gold Cup.

Sri Lanka Cricket vice-president K Mathivanan quits following allegations of impropriety

After resigning, he alleged that ‘the current administration carries out their duties without transparency’

Andrew Fidel Fernando30-Jul-2020Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) vice-president K Mathivanan has quit his position with the board, as he and the remainder of the SLC executive committee made accusations of impropriety against each other. Jayantha Dharmadasa, a longtime administrator who failed in his bid to be elected SLC president in February 2019, has been appointed to Mathivanan’s vacated post.An SLC release stated that Mathivanan’s resignation had come “in the wake of the recent unanimous decision of the executive committee to hold an inquiry against Mr. Mathivanan for indulging in unethical practices in his capacity as an office bearer”.Mathivanan, the only office bearer elected from outside the Thilanga Sumathipala-backed faction at the most-recent SLC polls, was understood to have had a deteriorating relationship with several others at the board, over the past year. The ethics inquiry is believed to have been about leaks to media – allegations Mathivanan denies.Following his resignation, Mathivanan himself issued a release alleging that “the current administration carries out their duties without transparency and integrity in such a manner which makes it impossible for me to remain in such a set up”. Mathivanan said that the board had made “unsavoury decisions” despite his objections, and had also failed to provide him with “notice of meetings, with the agenda and board papers”.SLC is set to hold another election next year, at which Mathivanan is again expected to contest. As vice-president, he had been in charge of domestic cricket, which presently stands suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Unbelievable" – Presenter stunned by "incredible" news coming out of Leeds

Alan Brazil has described an off-field update coming out of Leeds United as “incredible” and questioned how it has managed to happen.

Leeds release 2022/23 financial accounts

On the pitch, the Whites, under Daniel Farke, are pushing for one of two automatic promotion spots in the Championship alongside Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton.

Leeds already have their next Dallas in "unbelievable" star who Farke loves

Leeds United will hope this blossoming young star becomes their next Stuart Dallas over time.

ByKelan Sarson Apr 11, 2024

It promises to be a dramatic run-in, and news recently coming out of Elland Road has highlighted how important promotion back to the Premier League promises to be.

Leeds released their 2022/23 financial accounts, with reporter Joe Donnohue sharing the main takeaways, with the overall loss before tax standing at £33.7m.

Another eye-catching point from the figures is that the club currently owe £190m to clubs in unpaid transfer fees, relating to players Leeds purchased when they were in the Premier League.

TalkSPORT presenter stunned at “incredible” Leeds update

Finance expert Kieran Maguire was speaking to talkSPORT, relayed by MOT Leeds News, regarding the numbers coming out of Elland Road and if Leeds could be in trouble further down the line.

Specifically, in regards to the £190m in unpaid transfer fees, Maguire said former owner Andrea Radrizzani was using ‘the Leeds United credit card’.

“Well, possibly [Leeds could be in trouble], and the reason for that is that, under Jesse Marsch, Leeds spent a fortune on players last season. They bought players for £170m and Leeds fans were saying, ‘Well, that’s great, but we thought the owner was looking for a way out, so where’s he getting the money from?’

“It turns out [former chairman Andrea Radrizzani] has effectively used the Leeds United credit card. So Leeds now owe other clubs £190m in unpaid transfer fees. How are they going to do that in the Championship?”

Former Leeds ownerAndrea Radrizzani.

Presenter Brazil couldn’t believe what he was hearing, saying in response: “That is unbelievable! How has that just come out? That is incredible.”

To make matters worse at Elland Road, it has also emerged that Leeds have withdrawn their appeal against FIFA’s award of £24.5m in compensation to Jean-Kevin Augustin, so you’d expect we’ll be seeing these figures in future accounts.

The figures also show what a good job Leeds, now under new owners the 49rs Enterprises, are doing with the club appearing to be on the right side of PSR at this moment in time.
