Liverpool could use Caicedo transfer money on “mastermind” Alonso star

Liverpool have reportedly sent scouts to watch an attacking "mastermind" in action under the tutelage of none other than rumoured new manager Xabi Alonso.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds have been linked with several summer signings in recent days, as they look to freshen up their squad at the end of the season, with a new manager set to be arriving at Anfield.

One exciting rumour that has emerged surrounds Barcelona's 16-year-old sensational Lamine Yamal, who Liverpool are believed to be in pole position to sign in a massive £85m deal this summer. He already has five goals and assists apiece for the La Liga giants.

Barcelona's Yamine Lamal

Leroy Sane is also a player who could be available come the end of the current campaign, with no agreement in place with Bayern Munich over a new deal and the Reds' interest potentially turning his head.

Lloyd Kelly and Antonee Robinson, of Bournemouth and Fulham respectively, are two defenders who have been backed to join Liverpool, too, with the former available on a free transfer in the summer.

Liverpool keeping tabs on Alonso pupil

According to a fresh update from HITC, Liverpool sent scouts to watch Florian Wirtz in action last weekend, as his Bayer Leverkusen side picked up a huge 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga title race.

Man City transfer target Florian Wirtz in action for Bayer Leverkusen.

"HITC Football understands that, as Leverkusen stormed five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table with a thumping 3-0 win over the reigning champions, Xabi Alonso is not the only Bay Arena favourite with admirers on the red side of Stanley Park.

"HITC has been informed that scouts working on behalf of Liverpool were also in the stands to keep tabs on a number of players. Florian Wirtz, arguably the most exciting young attacking midfielder in Europe, is liked by Liverpool. As is Piero Hincapie. The talented, left-sided centre-half was a target last summer, as confirmed by his agent."

Wirtz is a player of unbelievable potential, so the idea of Liverpool snapping him up is mouthwatering, especially as he is currently playing under Alonso, who is the front-runner to be Jurgen Klopp's replacement at Anfield. The Spaniard has even compared his player to Lionel Messi, which says so much about his ability:

"Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: 'You're in a better position? Here, there you have the ball!' It's not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That's why he's so good."

At just 20, Wirtz has been one of Leverkusen's star players this season, helping them top the Bundesliga table by five points. He has scored five goals and registered eight assists in the competition, not to mention getting two and four in the Europa League respectively.

Liverpool will have money to spend this summer, with the report mentioning the funds not used on Moises Caicedo last year, and the German ace could be a sensational addition, having been hailed as a "mastermind" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Jeetan Patel to work with England during T20I series in New Zealand

Wellington give the offspinner dispensation to miss three Plunket Shield games to take up role

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Oct-2019Jeetan Patel will join England’s T20I set-up in his native New Zealand in a new role as spin-bowling consultant next month, in what he hopes will be the first step in a future career as a coach.Patel will join up with the England squad when they arrive in Christchurch next week, having been given special dispensation by Cricket Wellington to miss the first three games of their Plunket Shield season.”Of course it’s tricky,” Patel said. “I’m a contracted player for Wellington, but also there’s life beyond cricket. The opportunity came up and I spoke to Cricket Wellington and they were very positive about me doing that, firstly for my development beyond playing, and it gives other guys an opportunity to perform in my place which is part of handing over the mantle.”It’s a matter of getting as much experience as you can wherever the roles are. That’s the great thing about these comps around the world. For me, looking at what’s next, you’ve got to tap into these opportunities when they arise because they don’t arise all the time.”To work with England is huge and I’m so grateful that this has come about – now it’s up to me what I do with it.”The series starts at Hagley Oval on November 1, and is the first step in England’s preparations for the T20 World Cup in Australia next year. There are two frontline spinners in England’s 15-man squad in the shape of Adil Rashid and Matt Parkinson, while Joe Denly and Dawid Malan are possible part-time options.Patel, 39, has been Warwickshire’s regular overseas player since 2012, and boasts an impressive T20 record, with 229 wickets in the format at an economy rate just below seven. He played 11 T20Is for New Zealand between 2005 and 2008, and last played international cricket in 2017.

Emery drops Ramsey in predicted Aston Villa lineup vs Forest

da wazamba: Aston Villa returned to winning ways last weekend as they defeated Fulham 2-1 in the Premier League to remain in fourth position in the table, just two points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.

da fazobetai: Unai Emery will be hoping their progress to the last 16 of the Europa Conference League does not provide too much of a distraction as they chase a Champions League spot next term, but it does represent an ideal chance for the club to win a major trophy.

Unai Emery

With this in mind, the Spaniard will be tinkering with his starting XI between matches when the European fixtures return to their schedule in the next few weeks.

Firstly, they will have to negotiate another couple of league fixtures, with a clash against Nottingham Forest tomorrow afternoon at Villa Park.

With a week since their last tie, Emery likely won’t make many changes, with just a few potential tweaks to make in the Villa lineup for yet another crucial league match…

1 GK – Emiliano Martínez

Unless something drastic happens, Martinez will retain his place in between the posts for the clash against Forest.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper has only kept six clean sheets in his 24 Premier League matches thus far, but the free-scoring Villa side have often bailed him out.

2 RB – Matty Cash

Matty Cash.

The English-born Poland international will keep his spot on the right side of the defence purely because there is no adequate cover for him. Ezri Konsa is currently out injured while Calum Chambers has made just three appearances all season.

Cash lost possession 13 times against Fulham, while winning just one duel all match, and his performance was certainly not up to the required standard.

3 CB – Clement Lenglet

Clement Lenglet celebrates for Aston Villa…

Due to injuries to Konsa, Tyrone Mings and Diego Carlos, the on-loan Barcelona defender will keep his place in the starting XI ahead of tomorrow’s clash against Forest.

Since making his first Premier League appearance for Villa against Sheffield United just prior to Christmas, Villa have lost only three league ties and Emery will be hoping the Frenchman can keep another clean sheet.

4 CB – Pau Torres

Aston Villa defender Pau Torres.

The Spaniard only returned to the starting XI for the win against Fulham having suffered his own injury issues, missing seven matches for the club.

Torres currently ranks third among the squad for accurate passes per game (54.9), while also ranking third for clearances per game (2.3) and accurate long balls per game (2.9), proving he is one of the best passers in the squad.

A fit and healthy Torres will be vital if Villa aim to secure a top-four finish in the top flight this season.

5 LB – Lucas Digne

lucas-digne-aston-villa-chelsea-unleash-alex-moreno

The first change in the starting XI from the win over Fulham will see Alex Moreno make way for Digne at left-back.

The Spaniard committed two fouls, won just two ground duels and lost possession 11 times against the Cottagers, and it is the perfect game for Emery to unleash the Frenchman.

Digne has not started in the league since the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on Boxing Day, but he could well make a return tomorrow.

6 CM – Douglas Luiz

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

Emery will change shape from the win over Fulham, deploying a 4-2-3-1 tomorrow and this will see Luiz operate at the base of the midfield.

The Brazilian has been in wonderful form this season, registering 15 goal contributions – eight goals and seven assists – across 36 matches, and he has been sublime in the heart of the midfield for Villa this term.

His presence significantly improves the squad, and he will retain his place ahead of the clash on Saturday.

7 CM – John McGinn

John McGinn

The Villa captain will once again form a midfield partnership with Luiz, but tomorrow he will sit slightly deeper.

This shouldn’t matter to the Scot, especially considering he has found the back of the net on eight occasions, while Emery can rely on him for every match, as he has started all but two of their matches throughout the 2023/24 season.

8 RW – Leon Bailey

Leon-bailey

One of the most important things Emery has done is revive certain players who had struggled under the previous regime.

Bailey is one such player. This season in particular, the former Bayer Leverkusen gem has come to life under the Spaniard, scoring ten goals in all competitions and proving to be a general menace to opposition defenders.

Bailey last scored against the Blades a couple of weeks ago, and he will be desperate to get back onto the scoresheet tomorrow afternoon.

9 AM – Youri Tielemans

Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans.

The Belgian has endured a tough start to life at Villa, starting just seven top-flight matches, yet his display last week will see him retain his spot for the clash against the Tricky Trees.

Tielemans made one key pass and created a big chance while having a shot on target, and he showed a willingness to often get involved in an attacking sense.

10 LW – Moussa Diaby

Aston Villa winger Moussa Diaby.

Jacob Ramsey started on the left side of the midfield against Fulham yet failed to demonstrate his true talents.

Indeed, the Englishman had just two shots off target, won just 20% of his contested duels and lost possession nine times and this means he will give way.

Diaby will return to the starting XI in his place and he could prove to be a key threat against Forest.

The £130k-per-week Frenchman has yet to replicate his form that saw him shine in the Bundesliga, but it will surely be a matter of time before the winger gets going.

Hailed as “fearless on the ball” by journalist Aaron Stokes in 2022, Diaby has scored just six goals all season, but a decent run between now and May could boost his confidence.

Report shares new transfer update as Leeds plot Kalvin Phillips return

Leeds United, after coming from behind to shock Championship leaders Leicester City, now sit second on goal difference and within six points of the Foxes on course to win the title. On their way back to the Premier League at the first time of asking as things stand, reports suggest that promotion could see the Yorkshire club make a shock move in the transfer window.

Leeds United transfer news

As the summer transfer window approaches, the rumours have already arrived, with Leeds linked with the likes of Kilmarnock youngster Bobby Wales and Udinese wing-back Festy Ebosele in two deals that could boost Daniel Farke's side in the long-term future.

Meanwhile, the narrative on the pitch in recent weeks has been centred around the revival of Wilfried Gnonto. The young winger looked destined to leave in both the summer and in the January transfer window, with West Ham United reportedly interested in a move, but failed to get his departure. Staying put, Gnonto has finally shown glimpses of his best form ever since, scoring three goals in his last three games.

Wilfried Gnonto for Leeds United.

It is the type of Elland Road revival that others elsewhere may look on with promise, including Kalvin Phillips. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, the 49ers and Leeds have made a new midfielder one of their top priorities and will look to re-sign Phillips in a permanent deal this summer if they secure promotion.

The England international is currently on loan at West Ham, where he has struggled to regain the form he once showed in Yorkshire to earn his move to Manchester City in the first place.

A return to Leeds could be exactly what the midfielder needs to return to his best, however, especially as they look to make their mark on Premier League football once more.

"Excellent" Phillips needs Leeds return

A mistake on his debut in a draw Bournemouth, smashed 3-0 by Manchester United, on the end of a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal, before being sent off in a 2-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest, if anyone needs home comforts it is Phillips.

The midfielder's loan spell at the London Stadium was meant to prove Pep Guardiola wrong for limiting his opportunities at The Etihad, yet it's done anything but. And with the Euros coming up, Phillips may be starting to worry about his place under Gareth Southgate, despite the England manager's previous praise.

Southgate previously said: “He’s been excellent. To play in the enormity of the matches he did in the summer and play as well as he did is massive credit to him. He’s a very, very good player and he’s been a really important part of this – we’re 16 games unbeaten [in regulation time] now and he’s been a huge part of that.”

Of course, Phillips still has time to turn things around at West Ham, but a summer switch to Leeds could be the perfect way to really get back to his best in the familiar surroundings of Elland Road, making this one to watch.

Manager praised by Pep Guardiola is attracted to Crystal Palace job

It is believed a manager praised by treble-winning Man City boss Pep Guardiola is "attracted" to the Crystal Palace job, amid ever-mounting pressure on current head coach Roy Hodgson after another blow.

Crystal Palace 1-3 Chelsea

The Eagles made it three losses on the bounce after a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea in south London on Monday evening, with Mauricio Pochettino's side scoring twice in stoppage time to inflict what was a painful final few minutes.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 9, 2024

Palace actually took the lead and held their own for a large portion of the contest, but their efforts were cruelly undone in dramatic fashion as Hodgson struggled to find the positives at first.

“I’m not really in the mood if I’m being brutally honest of (highlighting) positives and trying to find things to say that would cheer me up, because I don’t know what could be said that would cheer me up," said Hodgson on Palace's defeat to Chelsea.

“What can I say that will cheer the players up? I could possibly say, well, with the players we’ve got coming back and these guys doing so well, it bodes well for the future with the 14 games we have left.

“But of course we still don’t know when (Michael) Olise, (Eberechi) Eze will be back, so we might be battling through like we’ve done tonight for a few more games before we can look at a team which will threaten the opposition a bit more than we did today.”

Former Palace loanee Conor Gallagher cancelled out Jefferson Lerma's opener just after half-time, with the Englishman then putting Chelsea in front on the 91st minute mark before Enzo Fernández rounded off their victory.

Mauricio Pochettino is under slightly less scrutiny after two wins on the trot in all competitions, but the same definitely cannot be said for his dugout rival from last night. Indeed, reports have suggested that chairman Steve Parish and the Palace board have been looking at managerial replacements for Hodgson, with an update now coming to light on ex-Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui.

Lopetegui "attracted" by Crystal Palace job

The Spaniard has been linked with a move to Selhurst Park following his departure from Wolves last year, and Football Insider journalist Pete O'Rourke writes that Lopetegui is "attracted" by Palace's quality squad.

Parish and co are keen on the 57-year-old as a possible replacement for Hodgson, with the ex-Sevilla boss actually near the top of their target list. However, Lopetegui is also believed to not be overly infused with taking the job right this second as they flirt with relegation.

It could be one to watch in the summer if Palace avoid a drop to the Championship, though, and City boss Guardiola interestingly holds Lopetegui in very high esteem.

"I would like to call him in the next days. I'm so disappointed, but I know what football is," said Guardiola on Lopetegui after he was once sacked by Real Madrid.

"I'm sorry for Julen because he's a friend of mine, he's an exceptional person. We played together at Barcelona, and have an amazing relationship."

The Aston Villa starlet who could be their best prospect since Grealish

Aston Villa have been immense this campaign, as highlighted by their current fourth-place spot in the Premier League.

However, this week they suffered a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to Chelsea, which dumped them out of the FA Cup.

The midfield arguably lost them the tie, but there was a glimmer of quality towards the end of the game via one substitute, whom Unai Emery could look to fully unleash soon.

The rise of Jack Grealish

Having been at his boyhood club since the age of six, Jack Grealish made his Premier League debut for Villa away to Manchester City on 7 May, 2014, in what was just the start of him becoming a Villans legend.

The winger would go on to mainly take on the role of a substitute in the next two seasons, during a time when the club struggled on the field and eventually succumbed to relegation.

However, this is where Grealish developed into the player he is today, taking on the captain's armband and leading the club he supports to the Premier League in 2019.

jack-grealish-villa

Grealish contributed to 65 goals over 213 games for Villa, with his best campaign coming in the 2020/21 Premier League season, when he scored six times and registered ten assists. This earned him a move to Man City for £100m, which is the second-most expensive signing in Premier League history.

The 28-year-old has gone on to become a key player for Pep Guardiola's side, helping them win the treble last season while also becoming a regular for England.

Perhaps, Emery could have the biggest prospect since Grealish waiting in the wings…

Tim Iroegbunam's future at Villa

Despite being handed his first Premier League start in the 2021/22 season by Steven Gerrard and impressing, Tim Iroegbunam was sent on loan to QPR last season, where he took on a key role, playing 32 games and helping the side avoid relegation to League One.

Former QPR loanee Tim Iroegbunam.

This season, he has played 41 minutes under Emery, which has occurred in Villa's last two matches. The 6 foot midfielder can play as a number eight or as a defensive midfielder, and his stats from his time at the Hoops show what type of player he is.

The England gem played a handful of roles in the Championship, for a side that often spent long spells without the ball, which prevented most of his on-the-ball qualities from shining, but he still showed his ability to carry the ball with ease.

However, that did allow him to show his ability to hold his own, especially out of possession, as he ranked highly for tackles won and passes blocked, showing his reading of the game is superb.

It is no surprise that analyst and writer PGR described Iroengbunam as the "real deal," and his profile would be the perfect replacement for Douglas Luiz, who has been tipped with a move away from the club, with Arsenal being a potential destination.

Emery can unearth an ideal Mings heir in Aston Villa's teen sensation

The likeness between the pair can be seen in their shared defensive prowess, with Luiz averaging 2.7 tackles and interceptions per game this season in the Premier League, while his young teammate averaged 2.8 for that same metric in the second tier in 2022/23.

Whether the Brazilian leaves in the summer or not, the youngster deserves a chance to shine.

Arsenal can forget Toney by signing £100m ace who’s a "mix of Aguero & Falcao"

It has been a season of ups and downs for Arsenal so far this year, as just a few weeks ago, they were top of the Premier League table and flying, whereas now they have fallen to fourth place and crashed out of the FA Cup following their 2-0 loss to Liverpool over the weekend.

While the entire team are playing worse than they did just a month ago, the frontline have been particularly bad as of late and seem incapable of scoring – failing to convert any of their 18 attempts against the Anfield side.

This inability to score a goal has seen the side linked to a number of strikers this month, including Brentford's Ivan Toney, but the latest name touted for a move to N5 could be an even better option: Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez.

Arsenal transfer news – Lautaro Martinez

According to journalist Dean Jones, Arsenal have shown interest in Inter Milan's star striker, Martinez.

Alongside the Gunners, Chelsea are also interested in the Argentine forward, and the fact that he has yet to sign a new deal with the Italian giants should come as good news to both London sides.

lautaro-martinez-inter-milan-chelsea-transfer-gossip-lukaku-pochettino-live-updates

That said, it will take an enormous effort to pull the World Cup winner away from the San Siro in 2024, with Jones claiming that it would take an offer of £80m-£100m to start turning heads at Inter.

While that is an undeniably pricey valuation, the fact that he has been in such unbelievable form over the last couple of seasons might make it more reasonable, as the alternative – Toney – has not played at all this season.

Arsenal should sign Lautaro Martinez over Ivan Toney

Now, the Gunners will likely see a notable increase in the number of goals they score, regardless of which forward they ultimately sign. Still, based on recent performances and possible potential, Martinez looks to be a smarter acquisition.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig would likely agree with that sentiment as he described the 26-year-old as a "mix of Agüero & Falcao", which is about as high praise as a striker can receive.

Agüero finished his career with 385 club goals, 119 assists and 41 international goals from 101 caps.

In comparison, Falcao has racked up 307 club goals, 55 assists and 36 international goals from 105 caps, so if Martinez can get anywhere close to these two, Arsenal would have a genuinely world-class forward on their hands.

With that said, who comes out on top between the two strikers when comparing their underlying numbers? Well, when using Toney's figures from last season – as he has not played in 2023/24 – and Martinez's figures from this season, it becomes even more evident that the Gunners must go for the former Racing star.

In every vital metric, the "dangerous" striker, as described by Kulig, has his potential competitor beaten. He takes more shots on target, scores from more of his shots, is a more accomplished dribbler, a significantly better passer of the ball, and produces far more shot-creating and goal-creating actions per 90.

Perhaps most importantly for Arsenal, though, is that his goals per 90 number of 1.01 this season is much higher than his non-penalty expected goals and assists figure of 0.66 – which is also impressive – meaning that he has been incredibly clinical in front of goal for the Nerazzurri.

At the end of the day, both strikers are truly elite, but with the Gunners so desperately needing a clinical finisher, Martinez seems like the far better option.

British and born in Belfast, Paul Stirling joins Northamptonshire as overseas player

Paul Stirling, the Ireland top-order batsman, has joined Northamptonshire for part of the T20 Blast as an overseas player, despite the fact he is a British passport-holder and was born in Belfast. He will provide cover for Kieron Pollard, who will play eight games for Northants in the middle of their campaign, filling the club’s second overseas slot. Faheem Ashraf, the Pakistan allrounder, is the primary overseas player, and will be available until the end of the Blast’s group stages.ALSO READ: Stirling to leave Middlesex after committing to IrelandStirling has become the second Ireland player to sign a contract in county cricket as an overseas player, after Boyd Rankin’s brief stint at Derbyshire last season. An ECB rule change meant that Irishmen, who had previously qualified as local players in county cricket, would no longer be able to play as non-overseas players following Ireland’s ascent to Test status in 2017. Those who already held county deals were given a grace period which ran until the end of the 2019 season.Rankin’s deal last year was the first overseas contract signed by an Ireland international – he was a new registration, so did not fall under the grace period – while Stuart Poynter and Tim Murtagh have both ended their international careers in order to extend their stays at Durham and Middlesex respectively. But with a view to extending his international career, Stirling left Middlesex in September, telling the that he found his situation “baffling”, but that he had no intentions to challenge the ruling legally.”The powers that be have made the decision to change the regulations but I can see it is a strange scenario when you are born British and have entitlement to work as a local in your own country, so I can see why it could be challenged and it would be interesting to see how far it would go if someone did challenge it,” Stirling said.”It is an ECB rule and I can understand it. Cricket Ireland have Test status and if you want to play Test cricket for Ireland then why should the ECB let someone play in their local tournaments if they are not looking to play for England?”I get it from their point of view but it is slightly more complicated than that in our case. Middlesex has been my home for so long so it does feel baffling to have to go but hopefully I will be able to play in some capacity in the future.”David Ripley, Northants’ head coach, said: “Paul brings great experience, skill, and firepower to our line-up. He has a reputation as a great team man and we are looking forward to welcoming him into our dressing room.”He’ll dovetail with Pollard and be available down the road should we qualify for the quarters and beyond. A special thanks to Cricket Ireland for their assistance in allowing Paul to play a role for us.””I’m thrilled to be playing for the Steelbacks in this year’s Blast, “Stirling said. “It’s a good wicket and the boundaries are small so I’m excited to entertain the people of Northampton.”I know a few of the guys very well and in Rosso [Adam Rossington] and Cobby [Josh Cobb] they have good leaders as captains at the club. I would like to thank David Ripley for showing faith in me and I’m hoping we can win the trophy come September.”
