The team’s Carabao Cup exit to Wolves only added to the misery, as they threw away a lead in the second round, leaving their disgruntled fans even more frustrated. Bowen was caught in the heat of the moment, lashing out at a supporter after the defeat, before publicly apologising for his outburst.

WHAT BOWEN SAID

With the Premier League title now a distant dream for West Ham, Bowen has set his sights on the FA Cup. He is determined to help his team lift the prestigious trophy, following in the footsteps of Crystal Palace, who won the cup last season.

"I've got one I'd love to do here when I'm at the club. I'd love to win the FA Cup," he told in an interview with I think growing up watching football, it is the most prestigious English cup competition. You see Crystal Palace win it last year and what it meant to them. Obviously, I'd love to win the league, playing in the Champions League, but I think something that I'd love to do this season… I think I'd love to win the FA Cup as a club."

Bowen’s career reached new heights when he scored a 90th-minute winner for West Ham in the Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina in Prague. His dramatic goal sealed a 2-1 win, and it sent West Ham fans into a frenzy as they celebrated their first major European trophy.

3 strikers Rangers could sign to upgrade on Dessers before the deadline

Glasgow Rangers managed to put four goals past fourth-tier side Dumbarton in their Scottish Cup fourth-round clash on the weekend, but it could have been more for Philippe Clement's side.

The Ibrox manager will have been pleased with the professionalism shown by his team, while a few players managed to secure some much-needed minutes following recent injury problems, most notably Ryan Jack and Borna Barisic.

Among those on the scoresheet was Cyriel Dessers, who netted his tenth goal of the season in the 4-1 victory against the Sons.

He has netted a goal roughly once every three games since joining the Ibrox side last summer and on the surface, that is a decent enough statistic, yet he has missed 11 big chances in front of goal and his performances have been poor throughout the campaign.

Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers.

With the transfer window closing next week, Clement does not have long to add another striker who could be an upgrade on the Nigerian. Here are three forwards who could arrive at the Light Blues this month and replace Dessers in the starting XI.

1 Tommy Conway

Tommy Conway celebrates for Bristol City.

First up is the latest name to be linked with a move to the Gers. According to Football Insider, Clement is reportedly monitoring the Bristol City striker ahead of potentially making a move for the youngster during the winter window.

They face competition from Old Firm rivals Celtic along with the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and Brentford for the City hitman as he has clearly attracted plenty of attention due to his performances.

Tommy Conway for Bristol City.

Having recently scored the winner against West Ham United in their FA Cup replay – being dubbed “clinical” by Statman Dave in the process – Conway has shown he can shine against the elite and this may tempt Clement into a move.

Although he has two goals less than Dessers this season, he has missed only five big chances in the Championship, which is six less than the Gers striker and it proves he is more accurate in front of goal.

The 6 foot 1 machine is only 21 and is eight years younger than the former Feyenoord frontman, which suggests his best years are still to come and this could very well tempt the Belgian into luring him to Scotland sooner rather than later.

He is not the only striker who has been linked with a move to Rangers as a possible Dessers replacement however as the next name on the list is from close to home…

2 Lawrence Shankland

Hearts attacker Lawrence Shankland.

Perhaps the player who has been mentioned the most when it comes to leaving their current club to join the Light Blues, Lawrence Shankland is a hot commodity right now.

According to Football Insider, the Gers could be looking to bring the Scot to Glasgow this month in the hope that he can continue his stunning goalscoring form that has seen him shine at Hearts since the start of last season.

Lawrence Shankland on international duty with Scotland.

He could cost around £3m potentially and while this does not appear much on the surface, Shankland will be 29 this year and paying that sort of money for a player with little to no resale value could be a mistake.

In the short term, however, he would be an upgrade on Dessers. Indeed, this season, Shankland has netted more goals (18 vs ten), along with registering more shots per game (3.6 vs 2.9), more successful dribbles per game (0.9 vs 0.4) and a better scoring frequency (a goal every 145 minutes vs a goal every 187 minutes) and these statistics show that the 28-year-old could score more regularly in Scotland than Dessers.

Former Rangers icon Barry Ferguson even claimed that the Hearts striker would be a good fit for the club, saying: “Let’s start with Lawrence Shankland who catches my eye every time I see him play for Hearts.

“This guy has improved his game to such an extent over the last couple of years that I’m surprised he’s not been snapped up already but, watching him on Wednesday, I saw a ready-made Rangers centre forward.”

Clement could supercharge Cantwell in Rangers move for £3m gem

Rangers could be eyeing a move to sign a Scottish striker this month

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 13, 2024

A move to Rangers could see the former Dundee United gem play in Europe and challenge for trophies. If a move was to be made, he may find it very hard to turn down, that’s for sure.

3 Emmanuel Dennis

emmanuel-dennis-nottingham-forest-leeds-united-transfer-gossip-cardiff-farke-striker

The final name on the list is one that Clement knows very well during his spell with Club Brugge, as Emmanuel Dennis has been linked with a move during the current transfer window.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri confirmed earlier this month that the Gers had been offered the player, saying: “Emmanuel Dennis has been proposed to the club but there hasn’t been an official approach as of now. I can confirm the player’s interest for Rangers though.”

The Nigerian scored ten goals in 46 games under Clement at Club Brugge, netting against the likes of Real Madrid in the Champions League and Manchester United in the Europa League during his stint in Belgium.

emmanuel-dennis-transfer-gossip-leeds-united-nottingham-forest-alf-haaland-farke

This clearly proves he has what it takes to score against the very elite and while his form this term is hardly prolific, his ability to play across a few positions could appeal to Clement.

Indeed, the 26-year-old can operate on either the left or right wing as well as through the middle and he has even been known to play just off the main striker during his career.

A move to the Light Blues could see him reunite with the 49-year-old and this may be what Dennis requires in order to start performing at his best again.

These three players would all offer something different for Clement as he aims to strengthen his squad, but it remains to be seen whether the club manage to bring any of them to Scotland in the coming days.

If the former AS Monaco coach wishes to add more trophies to the League Cup that was secured last month, at least one other centre-forward will need to be signed and this could well be the main focus before the transfer window slams shut next week.

Leeds: Phil Hay makes Jack Harrison claim

Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay has dropped a worrying injury claim regarding winger Jack Harrison ahead of Sunday’s crucial clash with Brighton.

The Lowdown: Marsch’s comments

Harrison was withdrawn in the first half of the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday evening. Jesse Marsch admitted after the match he was hoping the injury wasn’t too serious, describing the issue as a ‘contusion’ that ‘limited him from moving’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-43/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 25-year-old, described as a ‘big influence’ by Marcelo Bielsa, has missed just three Premier League games all season and none under Marsch but was due to have a scan on Thursday morning.

However, it looks as if he could join a number of senior stars on the sidelines due to injury and suspension for the final home game of the campaign.

The Latest: Hay’s claim

Hay shared a story for The Athletic following another night to forget for Leeds against Thomas Tuchel’s side. When it came to injuries, he stated that Harrison is ‘probably beyond Marsch’s reach for the meeting with Brighton’.

Raphinha was also taken off with a slight hamstring concern in the second half, but that was thought to be simply as a precaution.

The Verdict: What next?

Leeds are running out of time, games and players in their attempts to avoid the drop, so should Harrison miss out on Sunday, Marsch will be left with limited resources in attack on what would be another big blow.

Providing Raphinha makes it, he could be the only senior wide man available at Elland Road. Youngsters Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood, who are suited to more central roles, could be Marsch’s only options.

An even narrower formation could be deployed as a result, and who knows, Patrick Bamford may make a timely return to the squad in a rare injury boost, should he return to team training today as expected.

In other news: Phil Hay says £15k-p/w Leeds man will now leave Elland Road over the coming weeks.

Archer battled 'excruciating' pain during World Cup

Archer sustained the injury midway through the tournament and needed constant painkillers to make it through the rest of the competition

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Jul-2019Jofra Archer has revealed he was in “excruciating” pain as he battled a side injury during the second half of the World Cup. The tournament finished with him bowling the dramatic tied Super Over that enabled England to win the title on boundary countback.Archer sustained the injury against Afghanistan, England’s fifth match of the tournament, and needed constant painkillers to make it through the rest of the competition. The management may have had an eye on resting him at some stage during the group matches, but England’s mid-tournament wobble, where they lost consecutive matches against Sri Lanka and Australia, left them in virtually a must-win scenario against India and New Zealand.Archer then managed to produce one of his most impressive performances in the semi-final against Australia, trapping Aaron Finch lbw with his first ball to set the tone for a dominant victory, before his scarcely believable role in the final. He finished with 20 wickets in the tournament, a record for an England bowler in World Cups.”It was pretty excruciating,” he told about the side injury. “I’m fortunate it’s settled quickly. It was pretty bad. I couldn’t do it without painkillers, which was from the Afghanistan game onwards. I couldn’t get a week’s rest in during the tournament because of how close the games were. I only ever needed a week to 10 days.”Archer was given time off after the World Cup to recover physically and mentally from a dramatic start to his international career which only began in May. He didn’t take part in England’s pre-Test training camp and was allowed to head back home to Barbados for a holiday. He returned to action for Sussex in the T20 Blast on Friday evening and took 2 for 21 in another tied match ahead of England naming their squad on Saturday for the first Test against Australia. After the World Cup there had been a suggestion he may be held back until the second Ashes Test at Lord’s and given the strength of England’s pace-bowling resources that could remain an option but Archer, who has 131 first-class wickets at 23.44, is desperate to get his hands on the red ball.”I’m just ready to go out there and show the guys what I can do with a red ball,” he said. “I think my red-ball record is better than my white-ball record, so I just can’t wait to get the opportunity.”Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes combined to bowl England to victory against Ireland at Lord’s, demolishing the visitors’ second innings for 38, while Sam Curran and debutant Olly Stone took three wickets apiece in the first innings. James Anderson missed the match as he recovers from a calf strain but there is confidence he will be available for Edgbaston.

Almiron’s decision on Saudi transfer revealed as Newcastle agree deal

da blaze casino: Newcastle United could sell a "unique" St James' Park hero in the January transfer window, following a fresh update from journalist Ben Jacobs.

Newcastle set to lose key players due to FFP

da doce: The Magpies have experienced a worrying period in the transfer market, with rumours of key outgoing players dominating news of potential incoming signings instead. Kieran Trippier's future has been a major talking point in recent days, with Bayern Munich keen on snapping up the 33-year-old before the end of the month. He is thought to be open to the idea of joining the reigning Bundesliga champions, although PIF do not appear keen to sell.

Meanwhile, striker Callum Wilson has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid in January, and while the Magpies have rejected the La Liga side's advances to date, it is another piece of business that could be completed in the coming weeks.

There has even been a recent rumour suggesting that Newcastle could be forced to sell both Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak in the near future, in order to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, and now yet another player is on the chopping block.

Miguel Almiron set to leave Newcastle

Taking to X on Monday, Jacobs claimed that Miguel Almiron is now set to leave Newcastle this month, with an agreement reached with Al-Shabab.

dan-burn-miguel-almiron-newcastle-opinion

"Exclusive: Al-Shabab and Newcastle have reached a provisional agreement over Miguel Almiron. It's understood Almiron is open to the move, but the deal is not done yet."

This is a strange period for Newcastle fans to cope with, considering so many of their recent heroes are being linked with quickfire exits from St James'. Almiron is a player who it would be very sad to see move on this month, considering he has overcome a tough start to life with the Magpies, maturing into a key attacker player over time.

He scored 11 times in the Premier League last season, and while only three have come his way this term to date, he remains an important figure. Eddie Howe is clearly a big admirer of the 29-year-old, saying of him earlier in the campaign:

"He’s (Almiron) a unique footballer. I don’t think there’s anyone better at doing what he does – all energy, all action. I’d like to see his physical stats today because I’m sure they’d be through the roof. The quality he showed with his finish was very reminiscent of some of the goals he scored last year. It’s a great return to form for Miggy – he’s such an important player for us."

Newcastle's financial position does seemingly mean that sales are going to have to be made in January, and while Almiron still offers a huge amount to this side, he could be more expendable than the likes of Bruno and Isak, for example, with the pair both younger and more instrumental moving forward.

Eddie Howe personally wants to bring "future icon" striker to Newcastle

What a signing this could be for the Magpies.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 23, 2024

The hope is that nobody moves on, of course, with a number of exits acting as a blow to the Magpies' hopes of finishing in the European places, but the situation may be out of their hands.

Dawid Malan, Sam Robson hit fifties as Middlesex build platform

Malan celebrates England recall with unbeaten fifty as Middlesex move into strong position at Lord’s

Sam Robson and Dawid Malan hit half-centuries as Middlesex built a solid platform on a truncated first day against Derbyshire at Lord’s.Robson batted fluently for his knock of 93 from 163 balls, sharing a 90-run third-wicket partnership with Malan, who remained undefeated on 51 when bad weather brought proceedings to a premature close. The Middlesex captain, who has been named in England’s T20 squad for their tour of New Zealand, still requires another 16 to pass the landmark of 1,000 County Championship runs for the season.Derbyshire exercised their right to bowl first and gained an initial success in the fifth over when Nick Gubbins pushed forward to Luis Reece and was caught behind without scoring.Reece and Fynn Hudson-Prentice bowled tightly to squeeze Middlesex’s scoring rate to around two an over, but Robson and Max Holden dug in as they gradually put together a partnership of 52.However, Derbyshire struck again shortly before lunch when the pacy Sam Conners – making his first appearance at Lord’s – unleashed a rising delivery that Holden could only deflect into the hands of Wayne Madsen at first slip.Robson, who looked comfortable on both sides of the wicket, nudged a two to third man to pass 50 for the sixth time this season in the second over of the afternoon session.Meanwhile, Malan – who hit a career-best 199 when the sides met at Derby earlier in the season – settled quickly at the crease, clipping Reece for a boundary through midwicket as the Middlesex total progressed into three figures. The skipper survived an lbw appeal from Anuj Dal, who looked the pick of the Derbyshire bowlers, regularly getting the ball to fizz past the bat without any tangible success. There was another close call for Malan on 34 when he edged medium-pacer Alex Hughes to slip, but this time Madsen – who is only five catches short of the Derbyshire record for an outfield player – spilled the chance.Yet it was Hughes who made the breakthrough in his next over as Robson attempted to cut him and Harvey Hosein, standing up to the stumps, snapped up the edge.Bad light prompted the umpires to call for an early tea soon afterwards but, when play resumed, Malan swiftly advanced to reach his half-century from 94 deliveries. He and Martin Andersson moved their side’s score along to 176-3 before a further deterioration in the light, coupled with the arrival of rain, halted play for the day.

Stokes and England management 'behind Root 100%'

Joe Root “has the backing of everybody” in the England dressing room, according to Ben Stokes.Root has endured a tough few days. After experiencing perhaps his worst Test as captain – England suffered an innings defeat and he recorded his lowest return in any Test as leader where he has batted twice – questions about his position as captain have resurfaced. In particular, there are concerns over whether the leadership is compromising his ability to contribute with the bat. He now averages under 40 as captain and under 30 in 2019.But it is clear he retains the full support of his teammates. Certainly Stokes, who might be considered one of the few viable alternatives for the position and is now, at No. 9, two places above Root in the Test batting rankings, is unequivocal in his support. He believes that it is unfair to pin the failures of the whole team on one man and that there is “no one else to do” the job.”Joe knows that he’s got the backing of everybody in the changing room: players, backroom staff and management,” Stokes said. “That’s the main thing that counts for us as players in a very tightknit group. He knows that everybody in that changing room 100 percent backs him, as I do.”The pressures of being England Test captain is huge. It can be one of the most criticised jobs in England at times. And sometimes that criticism is unfair, I would say. There are 11 guys that contribute to a win or loss. It doesn’t all fall on the captain.”We put our hands up as players when we don’t perform. But unfortunately Joe cops most of that [criticsm]. But as a playing group, we stick together and we hold our hands up together as well.”He’s fine. He’s Joe Root. He is England captain and there’s no one else to do it.”There is unanimity within the England squad about where they went wrong in Mount Maunganui. Having squandered first use of the pitch, they then found themselves bowling on it at its best and were given a batting masterclass by BJ Watling. So, despite the scorecard, they know it was the batsmen, rather than the bowlers, who were most responsible for the defeat.”We fought as hard as we possibly could with the ball,” Stokes said. “I’m not quite sure what else we could have done. We spent 201 overs in the field and we left nothing out there. Scoring 350 in our first innings didn’t quite cut it. On a wicket like that, you have to get five or six hundred if you bat first. We knew we were under-par when we got bowled out.”Stokes was as disgusted as anyone by the comments directed at Jofra Archer towards the end of the first Test. As a man proud of his New Zealand and Maori heritage, he was at pains to point out how unrepresentative the incident was of the welcome England’s players – and supporters – receive in the country.”I’m obviously very proud of my heritage and where I’m from,” Stokes said. “I’ll always respect that. The tattoo on my arm just signifies where the family comes from.”Coming back to New Zealand, it’s not just a cricket tour for me. It’s also a great time to be able to catch up with family that I don’t get to see that often. I came out a week before the Test guys to stay with my mum and dad, which was awesome. I got to see brothers, sisters, cousins and everything like that. Every time I manage to come back it’s really good.”It wasn’t a nice way to end the Test match and it’s a shame because that doesn’t represent New Zealand is about as a country whatsoever. New Zealand is more accurately represented by how much support Jofra has had, not just from the New Zealand cricket team, but New Zealand in general after that incident.”That’s the main things for us now: making Jofra aware that we’ve got his back. It was a pretty horrific incident and something that shouldn’t happen in sport or in the world in general in 2019.”Archer was among the England seamers to return to training on Monday. While he didn’t have a long bowl, he appeared in no discomfort after his exertions in Mount Maunganui and is expected to play in the second Test. Indeed, England may well be unchanged. All the bowlers involved in the first Test bowled without issue on Wednesday though Matt Parkinson, the reserve spinner, took one ferocious blow to the thigh when Root thrashed one back at him. Parkinson will have a terrific bruise, but he was fine. Some of the fringe players have impressed, though. Saqib Mahmood continues to bowl well, while Zak Crawley is catching swallows in training and would appear to be a rare example of a county player reaching the England set-up with fitness levels to rival the very best in the squad. The 21-year-old scored a century in his only innings on the trip and is making a good case for his retention in the squad to tour South Africa despite the anticipated recall of Jonny Bairstow.
