Ada Hegerberg exclusive: 'Little village' Lyon are far from finished as Ballon d'Or winner eyes another Women's Champions League title by taking down all-conquering Barcelona

The Norway forward is eyeing her seventh continental crown in Bilbao on Saturday as she insists rumours of the French club's demise are incorrect

Ada Hegerberg is one of the greats. At 28 years old, she’s a six-time Women’s Champions League winner, the competition’s all-time top goal-scorer and was the recipient of the first-ever Ballon d’Or Feminin. You get to those levels by being wonderfully talented and extremely committed to the sport, rather than focusing on any outside noise, but the only way she could’ve avoided talk of Lyon, the eight-time European champions, being written off over the years is by living under a rock.

Such suggestions were perhaps at their strongest in 2021, when Paris Saint-Germain dethroned OL in France for the first time and also knocked their bitter rivals out in the Champions League quarter-finals. But three years on, Lyon are still here and on Saturday, in the final against Barcelona, they are chasing a second European title in the past three seasons. Overall, it would be a record-extending ninth triumph.

All six that Hegerberg has been involved in over the past decade have presented their own unique challenges which Lyon have overcome by adapting and evolving, and that continues today. Having had the financial backing from the club early on to be successful, others have closed the gap, including Saturday’s opponents. Yet, OL remain right at the top of the game.

“That’s what I'm most proud of because every year, it's been like, 'Now they're off, now they're losing it', but here we are still and we're going to be pressing for many, many years,” Hegerberg tells GOAL. “I feel like Lyon has kind of been the big dog, but at the same time, it's becoming like a little village fighting against all these big clubs and their economy coming in, which is also cool in some way. We had an advantage, but we kind of lost that, even though we stayed at the top, and now we're fighting on a different level again. I enjoy it.”

Players don’t need extra motivation to win a European title, but it certainly adds a little fuel to the fire when a group of players who have been there and done it all multiple times over still get overlooked by some. “That's why you need to keep winning,” Hegerberg says, “to keep the record straight.”

Getty ImagesEurope's dominant side

When Lyon and Barca met in the final two years ago, there was a feeling that all the talk on the outside was about the Catalans, who were going for back-to-back titles after winning their first 12 months prior. Understandably, it didn’t sit particularly well with those representing a side which had won a seventh European crown only a year before that their achievements were being overlooked in some cases.

Two years on, as the two prepare to face off again, the narrative feels different, especially after Lyon beat Barca in the 2022 final. However, Hegerberg still doesn’t think OL's incredible dynasty is “talked about enough”.

“I know it feeds the club. I know it feeds the players,” she tells GOAL. “That's the most important thing. Every year, we start fresh. But we know the history we have and honestly, as long as it feeds us and makes us prepared to go again and again and again, that's what's most important. Let the football talk in the end, because that's what counts.”

AdvertisementGettyNew rivalry

Perhaps it is that recency bias that is so often seen in all sports, perhaps it is because Barca’s rise has coincided with a huge growth in visibility for the women’s game or perhaps it is because some people genuinely believed Lyon’s time was coming to an end. Regardless, the French giants certainly reminded everyone of their quality when they won the Champions League in 2022, and they have done the same again with their run to this year’s final.

Another match-up with Barca awaits, the third time they will meet on this grand stage, and it is Lyon with the psychological edge after triumphing in those previous two meetings. The Catalans are more experienced than ever in their bid to finally get one over OL, though, and you could argue that this is their best squad to date. It’s all playing its part in creating an incredible new rivalry, one which will push both teams to get even better. “At the moment, you can say it's the two best teams in Europe,” Hegerberg believes. “It's as easy as that.”

'Greats recognise greats'

Despite what might’ve been said on the outside over the years, there is plenty of respect between these two incredible teams, too. “I think greats recognise greats. It’s always been like that,” Hegerberg says.

That much was certainly apparent when the striker sat down with Barcelona winger Caroline Graham Hansen for UEFA’s latest episode. “You have a packed team with fantastic players,” Hegerberg told her Norway team-mate. “I have a long history with Irene Paredes, because she used to play in PSG. I feel like we had a lot of battles during the years. She’s very tough to play against, but we have a great relationship outside the pitch, as it should be.”

“I've never talked with Selma Bacha but I've played against her a lot and it's always super tough,” Graham Hansen responded, previewing the battle with the Lyon full-back. “I love how she plays. I will probably face her one-on-one the whole game.”

“I catch up with Caro during the season,” Hegerberg tells GOAL. “We like to re-watch our games. But obviously, from both sides, before a game like this, we don't speak at all, which is completely normal and that's how it should be. Then we promised each other one thing, that the loser gets an assist or two from the other, hopefully, in the national-team break. But now it's all about winning for the respective teams and that is all that counts at the moment.

“She's had a top season,” she adds of the Barca winger. “Let's hope that she's not in the best form of her life on Saturday! But I'm happy for her because she's been brilliant.”

GettySecond home

Over the years, there have been plenty of rumours suggesting that Hegerberg could even join Graham Hansen in Barcelona, with the Catalans reportedly holding interest in the striker on a number of occasions. However, all speculation was put to rest last month when the 28-year-old signed a new three-year deal in Lyon.

“I felt like I wasn't done in Lyon,” Hegerberg explains. “The most important thing was for me to be in a place where I feel I can get the best out of myself and win as many titles as possible. There was no doubt from the beginning. It took some time to get where we wanted but I must say I have a huge amount of gratefulness towards Michele [Kang, majority owner] and Vincent Ponsot [CEO of OL Feminin] who basically made it impossible for me to even consider something else, because they showed a will to keep me that made it clear to me that I'm here to stay another three years, which is crazy. That means almost my whole career in Lyon – and then we'll see after that.”

Alex Wakely resigns as Northants captain after poor start to season

Adam Rossington will take charge of the Championship team, with Josh Cobb leading the Vitality Blast campaign.

David Hopps06-Jun-2019Alex Wakely has resigned as captain of Northamptonshire in both red-ball and white-ball cricket with immediate effect. His decision ends a period in which the club won the domestic T20 title twice – making Wakely the first captain in Northants’ history to lift two major trophies.Under Wakely’s leadership, Northants became one of the most popular T20 sides in county history as a heavyweight squad attracted growing admiration.Off the field, he encouraged a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere which helped to revive a small and financially-stressed county, and by doing so turned the club into one of the happiest in the country.Adam Rossington will take charge of the side for the Specsavers County Championship match away to Durham next week, with Josh Cobb leading the Vitality Blast campaign.”It’s been an honour and a privilege to captain Northamptonshire over the past few years but now I feel it’s time for someone new to have that honour,” Wakely said. “It’s not a decision I’ve taken lightly. I’ve deliberated long and hard with family and friends for several weeks.”A product of Northamptonshire’s academy and England’s captain in the 2008 Under-19s World Cup, Wakely took charge of the one-day side in 2013 whilst also becoming vice-captain under Stephen Peters in the Championship. That summer saw the Steelbacks claim the T20 honours at Edgbaston and also achieve promotion to Division One in four-day cricket for the first time in a decade. After missing the entire 2014 season through injury, Wakely was appointed captain in all formats in 2015. The following season, despite continuing financial constraints, Northamptonshire repeated their T20 triumph in Birmingham. In 2017 the team responded to Wakely’s insistence that they were ‘fed up with being average’ in the Championship and surprised many observers by logging nine victories in 14 games (the club’s second-highest percentage of wins in the competition, exceeded only in 1995) and sustaining a promotion challenge through to the final day of the campaign. But those standards have begun to fall away and Wakely’s disillusioned comments after another bad day with bat or ball had become increasingly common, culminating in an innings defeat against Glamorgan at Wantage Road.He led the side 198 times in all formats (a figure surpassed only by Geoff Cook, Jim Watts and Allan Lamb) and his tally of 20 first-class victories ranks him as one of the club’s top ten most successful skippers in the longer game since 1905.”Wakers is one of the best blokes in cricket, nobody has a bad word to say about him, said head coach David Ripley. “His captaincy record is there for all to see: trophies in the bag. I look forward to seeing him go on for many years as a player where he still has loads to offer.”Northamptonshire’s chairman Gavin Warren said: “Alex led the team during a period of financial challenge. He will go down in the history books as one of our outstanding leaders.”

From World Cup magic to four-day Tests – England v Ireland explained

(Humming to themselves) “It’s coming home, it’s coming home, it’s coming…”
Excuse me … wasn’t it your mate who stopped me in the street the other day and told me all about the cricket coming home…?Umm … that sounds entirely probable. I do apologise, he’s perfectly harmless really.
No, no, not at all. We watched it for the first time the other day and it was AMAZING!What, really…?
YES! Oh my God … the tension, the atmosphere, that finish! I can’t believe I’ve spent 40 years on this planet without knowing how awesome this sport is![Puffs chest out] Well, yes, it is rather splend…
… it was SOO good … that Super Over decider, what a brilliant concept! And that moment where that bloke dived at the ball to hit it over the rope for a treble! What skill and foresight! I can’t believe you guys do this sort of thing every week!Err, yes… We like to keep things interesting…
We couldn’t believe our luck. We were completely wiped out after watching Federer v Djokovic, and then there it was, hiding in plain sight on the other channel! How we hadn’t noticed it before, I just don’t know!Well, yes, quite…
Anyway, we’ve taken the plunge, and booked tickets for the Ashes at Lord’s next week!Ummm [checks date] … next week?
Yes! We heard there were tickets going spare at The Home of Cricket (I know, I couldn’t believe it either!) so we thought, let’s get ourselves down for the third match on Friday – who knows, we might get to see the decider!Third day.
Sorry?Third day. It’s all the same match …
Ohhh … so this is one of those famous five-day Test matches you were talking about?Ummm… yes. Except this one is a four-day Test.
R-i-i-i-i-g-h-t. I thought the Ashes was all about tradition?Well, it is. But that’s between England and Australia. This is between England and Ireland.
Ireland? But wait, aren’t they on the same side, like that rugby team? I mean, isn’t your captain Irish?Yes, yes he is. Or was.
Was?Yeah, he hasn’t played Test cricket for seven years.
Okay … that makes no sense at all. Still, those two guys who did all the hitting at the end, they were awesome too, can’t wait to see them.James Anderson takes part in England training•Getty Images

Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler? They aren’t playing either.
Wow … even they aren’t good enough for five, sorry four-day cricket! What a format this must be!No, they are good enough … they just needed a rest
Oh okay… well, what about that nice young man who threw the ball at the end?Jason Roy? Oh yes, he’s playing! Making his Test debut in fact!
No, not him … though that’s nice. That other guy who did all the throwing?Oh, the bowler, Jofra Archer?
Yes!Err, no. He’s currently getting splattered in paint on a holiday in Barbados.
Right … so who is playing?Well, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to see two of England’s greatest fast bowlers, with more than 1000 Test wickets between them.
Ooh, don’t tell me, don’t tell me … Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett! Oh I’m so pleased, I was telling my mate, “new-ball swing, cross-seam in the middle overs”, it’s a recipe for greatness, and now you’re telling me I’m right!Umm, no, though they are both jolly good too… no, I’m talking about James Anderson and Stuart Broad.
Who?[Sighs] Look them up online (though only via official rights-holding accounts, of course).
Okay… so, what about the Irish? Anyone we should look out for?Well, there’s Tim Murtagh, who comes from South London and plays for Middlesex, and Boyd Rankin, who’s got a fascinating career history. He played for Ireland in the 2007 and 2011 World Cups … where he helped beat England in one of the greatest…
[Picks ear-wax and gazes into middle distance…]… but actually went on made his Test debut for England against Australia in the Ashes! But then he never got picked again, so he went back to playing for Ireland…
[Interrupting] Fascinating! Anyone else notable?Well, there’s Kevin O’Brien, whose 50-ball century beat England in the 2011 World Cup, and who scored Ireland’s first Test century against Pakistan last year.
I’ve heard of him. Isn’t he the Irish Backstop? No, that’s his brother, Niall, who’s retired. And it’s wicketkeeper
Yeah, that’s what I said… This is getting complicated. Can I have a rethink? Oi, where are you running off to…?!

D'Arcy Short stars with bat and ball as Durham close out victory

Australian scores 46 and then takes two wickets on debut as Northants fall short in chase

ECB Reporters Network19-Jul-2019Durham 148 for 4 (Short 46) Northamptonshire 141 for 9 (Rossington 47, Potts 2-11) by seven runsA fine all-round performance from D’Arcy Short on debut guided Durham to a narrow seven-run victory over Northamptonshire Steelbacks in their Vitality Blast opener at Emirates Riverside. The Australia opener set the tone with an aggressive innings of 46 at the top of the order on a sluggish Chester-le-Street pitch. It allowed the hosts to set a challenging total of 149 for the Steelbacks to chase after losing the toss.Durham were able to take the initiative with the ball, reducing the visitors to 23 for 3. Adam Rossington led a spirited counter to keep Northants in contention, although once he fell for 47 to Short it appeared to be in vain. Rob Keogh almost provided late drama, but Matty Potts held his nerve with the final over to clinch the win.Openers Short and Scott Steel made a measured start to the Durham innings amid challenging overhead conditions. Short flashed his power with a couple of cuts to the fence. However, the pitch and the length of the boundaries at Emirates Riverside restricted the openers’ ability to get on top of the Northants bowlers.Short began to find his range and he pummeled Dwaine Pretorius back over his head for a boundary. The 28-year-old then survived a run out chance on 36 after Josh Cobb connected with a direct hit. Short’s attempt to up the rate resulted in his dismissal when he sliced an attempted straight drive off Graeme White and was caught by Matt Coles for 46.Steel and Graham Clark found their rhythm to guide their side over the 100-run mark. Steel was able to launch the first six of the match straight down the ground off the bowling of Cobb. The opener was beginning to free his shoulders before suffering the same fate as Short, allowing White to notch his second wicket. With overs running out Ben Raine had to hit the ground running. He offered a brisk 13 from eight deliveries before he was bowled by Faheem Ashraf, while Clark was caught on the boundary for 17. Captain Stuart Poynter and Liam Trevaskis guided Durham to a competitive total of 148 from their 20 overs, leaving the visitors requiring almost 7.5 runs an over.Northants’ reply got off to a stuttering start, losing Charlie Thurston in the second over, cutting a Potts’ ball straight to Short at point. Potts then removed the dangerous Cobb, clipping his pad then his leg stump to reduce the visitors to 18 for 2. Coles was elevated up the order, but fell attempting to pull Raine over the rope, only finding the hands of Jack Burnham.Rossington led the Steelbacks’ counterattack, blasting two huge sixes off the bowling of Raine to move them back in line with the required run rate. Rossington and Alex Wakely were building an important stand of 35, but Trevaskis broke the partnership by bowling the latter through the gate.At the other end, Short handed Durham control of the contest when he removed Rossington, finding the edge with a delivery down the leg side. The home side turned the screw as Short notched his second wicket as Pretorius found Burnham in the deep.Although the Steelbacks kept losing wickets, a lower-order stand between Keogh and White gave them hope. The two players took it to the last over, requiring 15 to snatch the win. Potts took on the responsibility and held his composure, guiding the hosts to the victory.

'I worked my a*s off to be here' – North Carolina Courage & USWNT star Ashley Sanchez opens up on long-lasting effect of being benched for entirety of disastrous 2023 World Cup campaign

Sanchez expected to play at World CupWas told she would be dropped to the benchPlaymaker was devastated by the decisionWHAT HAPPENED?

The North Carolina Courage playmaker believed she would have an important role when she was called up for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand. However, she was disappointed to be told that she would instead spend the tournament on the bench as then-coach Vlatko Andonovski preferred to start Savannah DeMelo and then Rose Lavelle following her return from injury.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT SANCHEZ SAID

She told the podcast: "I was told that I wasn’t going to play. I was trying to make the best of a situation, but it was definitely hard. When I was in it, I was [thinking], you don’t want to look back and have such a negative idea of something that you dreamed of your whole life, you know? But when you’re in the moment, you’re trying so hard to think of the positives, but you’re also like: 'Yeah, but I’m here, I worked my a*s off to be here, and I know I’m not going to play'.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The USWNT crashed out of the competition at the Round-of-16 with a penalty shootout defeat against Sweden. Sanchez soon returned to the NWSL and played a starring role for the North Carolina team, though it took some time to get over her World Cup disappointment.

She said: "I felt like I’m going to come back, I’m just gonna play really great and prove everyone wrong, and then I was just kind of like: ‘Oh, I think I actually need to deal with this'. It’s not just going to go away because you’re playing well, you know? And that was probably…I hadn’t gone through anything that hard, I would say."

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR SANCHEZ?

The 25-year-old has made 27 appearances for the USWNT and registered three goals and four assists. She will hope to play a key role this summer when Emma Hayes takes charge of the team ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris.

Imad Wasim joins Nottinghamshire for Vitality Blast stint

Spin-bowling allrounder becomes fifth Pakistan international to sign up for tournament

Imad Wasim, the Pakistan spin-bowling allrounder, has signed for Nottinghamshire as an overseas player for their Vitality Blast campaign. He will be available immediately, going into the squad for Friday night’s game against Derbyshire.Ranked second among T20I bowlers by the ICC, Wasim has been an integral figure in Pakistan’s rise to the top of the team rankings in the format, and has an economy rate of just 6.28 in T20 cricket over the course of his career.”With the nature of the international schedule, it’s a very difficult market in which to sign overseas players – far more difficult than it used to be,” Nottinghamshire director of cricket, Mick Newell, said. “With Imad becoming available on the back of the World Cup, we acted as quickly as possible to secure him.”The paperwork and clearances have taken a little bit of extra time, meaning we’ve had to start the tournament without him. But it’s good to now be welcoming him into the squad ahead of the next fixture against Derbyshire.”He brings an additional spin-bowling option that we think we can benefit from and he’ll strengthen our middle-order batting as well. With the venue we’ve got here at Trent Bridge and with the level of support we get here now, we are an attractive proposition to overseas cricketers.”Imad joins compatriots Faheem Ashraf, Babar Azam, Mohammad Amir and Fakhar Zaman to become the fifth Pakistan international with a contract for the Blast this season, though Zaman’s Glamorgan debut was delayed by visa issues and Amir has still to feature for Essex due to a similar issue.Nottinghamshire, who won the competition in 2017, were the favourites for the title this season, but started their campaign with a defeat against holders Worcestershire and a washout against Yorkshire before getting back on track with victory over Northamptonshire.Imad will fill the club’s second overseas slot, alongside captain Dan Christian. Notts had previously suggested Christian would be their only overseas signing for the Blast, but a serious knee injury to allrounder Steven Mullaney meant they swooped for reinforcement.”I can’t wait to represent the Outlaws in T20 cricket,” Imad said. “Trent Bridge is a wonderful ground with fans who are passionate and knowledgeable.”They were a generous audience during the One-Day International earlier this year and Trent Bridge under floodlights looked amazing.”My aim is to contribute to the Outlaws going all the way. They did it in 2017 and we have an exciting squad with lots of international talent that’s capable of doing it again.”This will be Imad’s first stint in the county game, though he has previously played club cricket for several different teams in England, including Papplewick, Burnley and Bradshaw. He will be available for the whole of the Blast, barring a two-game break at the end of August for his upcoming wedding. He was only picked in six of Pakistan’s eight World Cup games, but ended the tournament with 162 runs at a strike rate of 118.24, and was his team’s most economical bowler.

  • Group ready to sell the French club
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

INEOS's stake in both United and Nice has caused a conundrum due to both teams qualifying for next season's Europa League as UEFA's rules prevent teams who share an owner from featuring in the same competition.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Due in part to the complications regarding UEFA's rules, INEOS are prepared to sell the French club, reports. However, the decision is also motivated by Sir Jim Ratcliffe's desire to focus on United since taking on a minor stake earlier this year.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

United and Nice are unsure on how UEFA will handle their case for the Europa League next season. It is expected that the governing body will go down the same route it did last season regarding AC Milan and Toulouse, who also share an owner. The clubs were prevented from transferring players between each other, nor were they allowed to use the same scouting and player databases, among other restrictions.

    WHAT NEXT FOR INEOS?

INEOS hope to rid themselves of the common ownership headache by selling their stake in Nice. However, French football's precarious financial situation may hinder their search for a buyer in the coming months.
