Arsenal told to go after two targets who 'could score as many goals as Erling Haaland' – but Gunners warned they must avoid £100m Newcastle star Alexander Isak

  • Arsenal looking for a No. 9 in the market
  • Advised to pursue Nico Williams & Ivan Toney
  • Told to stay away from £100m-rated Isak
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal are reported to be on the hunt for a new striker who could guarantee plenty of goals, especially with repeated injuries to forward Gabriel Jesus. They have been linked with several potential targets including Brentford's Ivan Toney, Newcastle United's Isak and a host of other burgeoning names in European football.

    WHAT PETIT SAID

Petit believes that Toney and Athletic Club's Nico Williams' should fit Mikel Arteta's system seamlessly and has urged the north London outfit to sign the two strikers.

"I really like Nico Williams and could play up front for Arsenal," he told "He's very fast, can be an independent goalscorer and combines with teammates. A lot of people said signing Haaland for Man City was a mistake, but the way they control the ball in the opponent's half, they can create lots of chances for him.

"Arsenal need a 20-goals-per-season striker, they currently have a few players who can score 10-15 goals per season, like how Man City used to be. Pep Guardiola changed the system because he knew he needed a striker who could score lots of goals. In Erling Haaland's first season, he broke goal-scoring records and won the Champions League. Mikel Arteta will follow the steps of Guardiola, the way their teams play and a striker would be a cherry on top of the cake. I think Nico Williams or Ivan Toney could score as many goals as Haaland does for Man City at Arsenal"

  • ARSENAL TOLD TO AVOID ISAK

Isak has garnered significant interest from Arsenal, who joined the Magpies for a club-record fee of around £59 million ($69m) in 2022. The Swedish striker has notched up 15 goals in 23 Premier League appearances which has swelled his market value to a reported £100m ($126m) but Petit believes that the player is not worth the price tag.

"I don't think it would be a good decision by Arsenal to buy Isak for a big price," Petit said. "Arsenal's transfer policy is very good, and they should keep their policy rather than fund clubs like Chelsea, Newcastle or those kinds of clubs. Arsenal shouldn't splash their money like that. Isak would be a good addition to the squad, but there are players outside of England that could have the same impact."

Eddie Howe has admitted that it might be a "difficult summer" for the club as Isak and Bruno Guimaraes might be shipped off amid interest from several European elites. It remains to be seen if Arsenal choose to put their money on the forward despite the warnings or shift their focus to Toney and other targets.

Dinesh Chandimal out of second Test, Charith Asalanka called up

Suranga Lakmal will captain Sri Lanka in Chandimal’s absence, as he did during the two-Test series against South Africa earlier this year

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Nov-2018Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal has been ruled out of the second Test against England in Pallekele. Chandimal suffered a groin injury during the defeat in Galle and will be out for two weeks, which could also make him a doubt for the third Test, in Colombo, starting on November 23.Suranga Lakmal, the team’s senior pace bowler, will captain Sri Lanka in Chandimal’s absence, as he did during the two-Test series against South Africa earlier this year, when Chandimal was serving a ban.Uncapped batsman Charith Asalanka has been called up to the squad, which also includes Roshen Silva. Asalanka, who scored an aggressive 68 in the second warm-up match against England, comes in ahead of Lahiru Thirimanne and Kusal Perera, who were the two batsmen on standby.Sri Lanka will also have to make a change to their bowling attack for the second Test, with Malinda Pushpakumara expected to come in for the retired Rangana Herath, while the news that Akila Dananjaya faces his action being tested – although he will still be eligible to play in Pallakele – is another headache.Meanwhile, team manager Charith Senanayake has resigned the position for personal reasons. Jeryl Woutersz, who has previously fulfilled the role, has been named as Senanayake’s replacement with immediate effect.

Shield to remain at SCG despite new $50 million hub

New South Wales will still play the majority of their home Sheffield Shield matches at the SCG, despite the inclusion of an ICC-compliant oval in plans for a new A$50 million training base for the state association. It is the first time NSW has shifted its headquarters away from Sydney’s eastern suburbs in more than 150 years of existence.Discussions about the headquarters and training facilities of Cricket NSW have been going on for more than five years, and focus upon a new “hub” site in the Sydney Olympic Park region began to take shape in late 2016. It was hastened by concurrent plans to redevelop the Sydney Football Stadium adjacent to the SCG, thereby squeezing the state association out of offices it had occupied for some years. At the same time, ongoing squabbles between NSW and the SCG Trust, plus the expansion of the state’s number of elite teams with the advent of the NSW women’s team and men’s and women’s Big Bash League sides, created further pressure for expansion. To that end, the NSW state government has pledged A$30 million to the project, with NSW and Cricket Australia to contribute A$10 million. The remaining A$10 million expected to be required to fund the project will be sought in coming months from sponsors and also the Federal government.”This is a landmark day for NSW cricket. NSW produces the best cricketers, male and female, in Australia and they will now have the best facility in Australia to train,” NSW chief executive Andrew Jones said. “This facility will also accommodate indoor training and outdoor playing for men, women, boys and girls from all over Sydney.”The growth of cricket and the Allianz Stadium redevelopment make this facility urgently needed. During the past decade the number of elite teams under the Cricket NSW umbrella has grown from two to six with the advent of the men’s and women’s Big Bash. With Cricket NSW also leading the professionalisation of women’s cricket two seasons ago, we have simply outgrown what we currently have at Moore Park.”The new facility will allow us to have a modern high-performance centre with a cricket field and plenty of turf nets to cater for the increased number of elite and developing players now coming through our pathway system. With our extra training facilities at Blacktown and a continuing presence at the Sydney Cricket Ground we will now be able to better cater for all our athletes right across Sydney.”Key to the new facility will be the ability to train on turf wickets during the winter months, an advantage previously available only by venturing north of the NSW border to the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane. But despite the inclusion of a new cricket ground in plans, the association’s strategy will still be to play four of every five home Shield fixtures at the SCG, leaving the new Olympic Park precinct, to be completed by 2022, as a training and administrative base.”The government’s investment of $30m towards a Western Hub will be a game changer for our sport in NSW,” CA chief executive Kevin Roberts said. “I know first-hand the importance of facilities like these to support young aspiring cricketers, particularly in one of the fastest growing areas of Australia. CA is pleased to join Cricket NSW and the NSW Government in investing in this project and we can’t wait for it to get started.”Since the opening of the NCC in Brisbane in 2013, Cricket Victoria has unveiled its own A$40 million headquarters at Junction Oval in Melbourne, Tasmania has worked to allow its players the chance to train on turf during the winter by installing a large marquee in Hobart, and now NSW has followed suit with its own set of year-round facilities. CNSW will move to temporary offices in Sydney Olympic Park at the end of this season, ahead of the new centre’s opening.”In our 159-year history we have never had a home that we manage and control,” Jones said. “We produce the best male and female cricketers in Australia and they deserve the best facilities, and now we will have them. It will be the best high-performance cricket facility in Australia. There have obviously been some issues for cricket lately, but they are one or two-year issues, this is a 100-year success story. So this will set Cricket NSW up until 2118, so what happened in 2018 won’t matter.”NSW already shared a playing and training facility at Blacktown Oval to Sydney’s west, while the Sydney Thunder play their BBL home games at Sydney Olympic Park.

Will we see more sweeps from India at MCG?

Lyon has become a major threat for India, taking nine of his 16 wickets off defensive shots. Sweep could be a lower-risk option to put pressure back on him

Sidharth Monga in Melbourne24-Dec-20183:58

WATCH – Ashwin, Jadeja and Rohit train ahead of Boxing Day Test

There was a time when everybody used to be surprised when a spinner did well against India, leave alone a humble offspinner. However, there is no surprise right now who the highest wicket-taker in this series is. He is Australia’s most successful bowler against India, and the world’s second-most successful spinner against the same opposition, known for their batsmanship against spin. Nobody has dismissed Virat Kohli as many times as he has. That he is fit and performing is proving to be a big advantage for Australia. Nathan Lyon, with 16 wickets at 19.43 each, is currently the most threatening bowler in the series.India’s batsmen – under fire anyway – once again have questions asked of their techniques against spin. While it is true that spinners like Moeen Ali feed off the pressure created by their seam bowlers at home – they have much better numbers against India at home as compared to in India, where they should ideally do better – Lyon has now been troubling India both home and away. That nine of Lyon’s 16 wickets this series have come off defensive shots in what can’t be classified as dream conditions for spin is a matter of big concern if you are India’s batting coach. That combined with low strike rates of batsmen against Lyon means two things: the defensive technique is not what it should be, and that they don’t have enough low-risk attacking options. Not only is Lyon taking wickets, he is bowling beautifully in one spot when the wickets are not coming. Those who have managed to score at a strike rate of over 50 against him have not been able to bat long enough, which points to the high-risk game Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma have had to play against him. The fact that others – even Kohli – haven’t been able to force mistakes from him points to lack of attacking options too.One of those attacking options was seen in the nets on Sunday, three days before the start of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. When batting against spin, Kohli played a succession of sweeps. Perhaps he was just toying with the idea, and we might not necessarily see him play that shot often, but there seems to be an intent to attack spin. Even Cheteshwar Pujara lofted spin in the nets on one occasion on Monday. The sweep remains an interesting option, though. Traditionally Indian batsmen have prided themselves on not needing the sweep: they are either right forward or right back, playing the ball either before it turns or after it has turned. The sweep has been considered the weapon of the less proficient. Yet, it is an effective shot. When played well, it not only plays with the bowler’s rhythm, it also makes the fielding captain defend more scoring zones, removing an attacking fielder.R Ashwin and Nathan Lyon share a laugh•AFP

In this series, Lyon has been swept or reverse-swept only 23 times, which is once every five-and-a-half overs. On the last trip here, when Lyon averaged 35 against India, he was swept or reverse-swept 92 times, once every two-and-a-half overs. Even when Lyon toured India last year, India swept or reverse-swept him once every three-and-a-half overs.India’s relationship with the shot has been sporadic. On two consecutive tours of England, they went to the shot in the nets only after Moeen Ali had troubled them. Trailing 2-1 in 2014, they tried it only before the finale at The Oval. Those who were present in England this year talk of how the Southampton defeat sent them to the shot in the nets at The Oval.India have trained hard to face spin although what Lyon does is difficult to replicate in nets. That quality of bowling with that much overspin is not readily available. Still India have tried to simulate the conditions, creating artificial rough; once Kohli batted at the edge of a pitch at the SCG nets with Sanjay Bangar, the batting coach, throwing balls down diagonally into some rough there. Kohli has been practising the sweep in the nets since Adelaide, but he has not played a single sweep against Lyon. Perhaps he doesn’t feel he is ready with it yet, which makes it a risky option as opposed to his against-the-turn cover-drive, which he used to good effect in the first innings in Perth. In this series, even R Ashwin, who has played only one Test, has been swept or reverse-swept only nine times, which makes it once in almost 10 overs. Seven of those shots have been played by a lower-order batsman, Lyon himself. So perhaps the conditions – both Adelaide and Perth strips had appreciable bounce in them – make the sweep a risky option. Perhaps, by sweeping Lyon more often than Australia have swept spin, India have been proactive but just haven’t been able to find a way.Melbourne should bring India more scoring options against Lyon, especially with less bounce from the pitch to aid his overspin. We might just see more sweeps. Whatever they do, India will need to find a way to attack Lyon. Even if Lyon is not a wicket-taking threat, India can’t afford to let him hold one end up, which gives the fast bowlers time to recover and take turns from the other end. One of Lyon’s big successes this series has been that Australia’s fast bowlers have fewer overs in their legs, which allows them to play an extra batsman. With the reputation they have against spin, India should not be allowing that to happen.

'We are in big, big trouble' – Pep Guardiola concerned about Man City injury problems after Rodri begs for a 'rest' amid intense Premier League title battle with Arsenal and Liverpool

Manchester City are in "big, big trouble", according to Pep Guardiola, as injuries bite amid a tense Premier League title race.

Guardiola issues pessimistic updateRodri has begged for a restPep unsure if he will rotate against LutonWHAT HAPPENED?

Guardiola says that City's players are struggling with tiredness, after Rodri essentially begged for a rest after playing in their midweek Champions League draw with Real Madrid. The Premier League champions are currently third in the league, however, but need to find a way to keep putting points on the board; they are only one point behind both Liverpool and Arsenal with seven games to play. Nevertheless, Guardiola has claimed that if Rodri does really want a rest, he may have to be left out.

City have been in good form in recent weeks, but the tiredness has started to show; they had to come from behind to beat Crystal Palace 4-2 last week and conceded three in midweek against Real Madrid. They have not actually lost since December 6, when they were beaten 1-0 by Aston Villa. They have drawn with both Arsenal and Liverpool in recent weeks.

WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

Guardiola told reporters: "Take a look at our games and you realise. It is simple. He is so important for the quality he gives us. But if you have a player that doesn't want to play, he won't play. I need to rest the centre halves also but in [England's] friendly games, [John Stones and Kyle Walker] got injured so they get cannot rest. We are in big, big trouble. I had the feeling we were tired in the last games. We will decide [on Saturday] what we have to do."

City play Luton this weekend in a huge game at both ends of the table. While Guardiola's team continue to chase the title, the Hatters are 18th, but they are level on points with Nottingham Forest and only in the relegation zone due to goal difference. City have already played Luton twice this season, both at Kenilworth Road; Guardiola's side won 2-1 in the league and 6-2 in the FA Cup fifth round.

Mohammad Abbas ruled out of Centurion Test

Pakistan will have to fight for just their third Test match win in South Africa without the services of Mohammad Abbas. Sarfraz Ahmed confirmed at a press conference at Supersport Park that the Boxing Day Test came too soon for Abbas, with the shoulder injury that kept him out of the third Test against New Zealand ensuring he will play no part in the opening Test.”Abbas is not fit for the first Test, hopefully he will be fit for the second Test,” Sarfraz said. “Shadab Khan, too, will be back for the second Test, but Fakhar Zaman is fit.”Legspinner Shadab has been nursing a long-term groin injury which caused him to miss the home Tests against Australia and New Zealand, although he did take part in the limited-overs games against New Zealand. Opening batsman Fakhar, meanwhile, has not featured for Pakistan since November 11 thanks to a knee injury, but played in the tour game against a CSA Invitation XI last week.Abbas’s sensational performance in the two-Test series against Australia on the generally placid UAE tracks in October – he took 17 wickets in two Tests at 10.58 – meant he was considered Pakistan’s trump card for the seamer-friendly pitches in South Africa. After the shoulder niggle last month, he was initially thought to be ruled out for the entire South Africa tour, before it emerged that he could participate in the bulk of this series. He had at one point been believed likely to win the fitness race by Boxing Day, only for Sarfraz to confirm otherwise.Abbas’s absence means Pakistan are left with just three specialist seamers in Mohammad Amir, Hasan Ali and Shaheen Afridi along with the allrounder Faheem Ashraf. That quartet is all set to feature in the Centurion Test now. Sarfraz also hoped the surface would allow the legspinner Yasir Shah some purchase in the later stages, effectively confirming the spinner’s involvement in Shadab’s absence.

Thisara Perera's all-round heroics down Dhaka Dynamites

The allrounder scored 26 off 12 and followed it up with three wickets and a 19th over that went for just one run

The Report by Peter Della Penna22-Jan-2019

Shahid Afridi celebrates with Imrul Kayes•Raton Gomes/BCB

How the game played outComilla Victorians pulled out a sloppy, see-saw affair by seven runs thanks to the all-round heroics of Thisara Perera. Though the final margin might indicate that the game went down to the wire, Victorians actually sealed it quite comfortably in the final three overs when the Dhaka Dynamites tail was left stranded following the dismissal of captain Shakib Al Hasan. The match was far from a crisp contest, with a series of missed chances on both sides that served to keep it interesting. Deep square leg and deep midwicket were high-traffic areas throughout the day and the Victorians’ ability to seize more chances on the boundary paid off in the end.Turning points With Liam Dawson struggling to get bat on ball at one end, the red-hot Thisara Perera clattered three sixes in his 26 off 12 balls before he was run out in the final over in a mix-up trying to steal a bye. Thisara removed a rampaging Andre Russell for 46 in the 15th over to defuse the Dynamites’ chase with a slower ball pulled to deep midwicket. With 36 needed off 25 balls and with five wickets in hand, Shakib pulled a full toss from Shahid Afridi straight to deep midwicket. Thisara followed up Shakib’s dismissal with two more via the short ball in the 17th, effectively snuffing out the Dynamites chancesStar of the dayThisara Perera not only continued to be the Victorians’ sensational spark plug at the end of the innings with the bat, but silenced the Dynamites at the death. Not only did he take three crucial wickets, but he conceded just a single in the 19th over, leaving 19 runs to get off the last six balls, which wound up being too tough for the tail. The big missShakib got an absolute meatball from Afridi that should have been hit out of the ground. He stood motionless at the wicket once he realised he didn’t get the elevation to clear the man on the boundary and even though the required run rate was just nine per over for the last four, Dynamites’ last recognised batsman was gone to turn Dynamites from favorites to underdogs.Where the teams standVictorians joined Dynamites on 10 points at the top of the table in a three-way tie for first place with Chittagong Vikings, but the Vikings have two games in hand.

UAE allrounder Amjad Javed announces international retirement

The seam-bowling allrounder played 15 ODIs and 22 T20Is for UAE, featuring in the 2014 World T20 and the 2015 World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Dec-2018Amjad Javed, the former UAE captain, has retired from international cricket. The 38-year-old seam-bowling allrounder hasn’t found a place in the UAE line-up since December 2017, when he played against Nepal in the ICC WCL Championship.”It is never easy when you have to call it a day,” Amjad told . “You have to decide at what time you need to retire. At the moment, the team is doing better than two years back. I can’t find a place in the team. Nothing motivates me to push myself and fight for that position.”Amjad played 15 ODIs and 22 T20Is for UAE, featuring in the 2014 World T20 in Bangladesh and the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. His all-round efforts against Ireland – 42 and 3 for 60 – nearly gained UAE their only victory of the latter tournament, but he chose a performance in the World Cup qualifier the previous year as his personal favourite. In that match, in Christchurch, he smashed 63 off 31 balls and followed it up with 2 for 29 from his 10 overs to consign Kenya to a 13-run defeat.”The main highlight of my career was the 2014 World Cup qualifier [Super Six match] we played against Kenya in New Zealand where I was the man of the match,” Amjad said. “We qualified for the World Cup and achieved ODI status. Everything started rolling after that.”
