'Incredible game' – Labuschagne recounts drama of epic tie

Marnus Labuschagne has reflected on being involved in the extraordinary tied County Championship game earlier this week and admitted Glamorgan thought they were home in their bid for a world-record run chase. They had been set 593 by Gloucestershire and entered the final over of the match needing two to win after centuries from Labuschagne and Sam Northeast. Mason Crane played out four dot balls before taking a single to level the scores leaving No. 11 Jamie McIlroy on strike. He swung hard at Ajeet Dale, edging through to James Bracey who took a spectacular one-handed catch having removed his right glove in preparation for the batters attempting a bye.Related

“Whenever you are chasing a big score like that it’s always about one step at a time,” Labuschagne told . “But the ground we played at was [a] very fast outfield so you just felt like if you got on top of the opposition and you scored and batted well, things could get out of hand very quickly.”That’s always in the back of your mind but you are just taking it one step at a time. Then when it gets down to 100 you start getting a little more invested and you get a bit more eager, then it gets down to 50, then we lost a couple more wickets and we are like, do we bat the draw or go all in for the win.”So there was heaps of ups and downs and even into the last over, we got a boundary off the last ball of the second last over of the day, then we thought we were home. Needed two runs off the last over, we had Mason Crane the batter in on strike. He ended up facing four dots and then got a single, so it’s over to the No. 11 to get the job done.”Incredible game…we got their score, we just couldn’t get one more.” The match marked Labuschagne’s last County Championship outing of this spell with Glamorgan which concludes with a run of T20 Blast matches before he returns to Australia. He will then be part of Queensland’s pre-season as their new captain ahead of potentially returning to England for the ODI series in mid-September.Labuschagne scored 468 runs at 58.50 in four first-class matches with two centuries which follows a relatively lean period in his Test career where he has made one century in his last 20 Tests, although hit 90 in the previous outing against New Zealand in March.”The ups and downs of the game is part of the challenge,” he said. “For me it was just a good opportunity to review before I came here on how I’ve been successful, what have I done in different time periods that I’ve been batting well… have done a few technical things and worked on a few things and it’s coming together really nicely, so setting up nicely for some one-day cricket and some Test cricket coming up this summer.”I always look at my game from a technical lens, finding out ways to improve and get better, and especially with my technique making sure my alignment is good, moving into the ball well, all those sorts of things [are] really important for me.”Being involved in a 592-run four-day tie has not been the only memorable moment of Labuschagne’s Glamorgan season with him also lighting up social media with his spectacular catch in the T20 Blast.”It’s definitely the best catch I’ve taken that’s been caught on camera, that’s for sure,” he said. “I took a catch in club cricket when I was 18 or 19, the boys that I play with at Queensland always say it was another very good catch, but unfortunately we don’t have that on camera, so as good as it never happened.”Labuschagne could be available for at least the first month of the Sheffield Shield season for Queensland and potentially more depending on how multi-format players are managed around the white-ball series against Pakistan in November. The first Test against India starts in Perth on November 22.”It’s there in the back of my mind stewing along,” he said of the prospect of facing India, “but when you are playing you are always trying to focus on the here and now.”

Gambhir: 'I would love to coach the Indian team'

Gambhir says there is “no bigger honour”, but it’s not clear yet if he has applied for the job

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Jun-2024Gautam Gambhir “would love to coach India” if he is given the opportunity.Gambhir, fresh from playing a key role – as mentor – in Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) run to the IPL 2024 title, has been contacted by the BCCI for the job after Rahul Dravid’s tenure ends following the conclusion of the ongoing T20 World Cup, though it’s not confirmed whether he has applied for it. The deadline was May 27, a day after the IPL final.”Look, I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team,” Gambhir said during an interaction with children at an event in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. “You are representing 140 crore Indians. It was in response to a question, where a youngster also asked Gambhir how he would help India win a World Cup.”How can I help India win the World Cup – I think it’s not me that will help India win the World Cup, it is 140 crore Indians that will help India win the World Cup,” Gambhir said. “If everyone starts praying for us, and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. The most important thing is to be fearless and yes, I would love to coach India.”Dravid, it is learned, has communicated to the BCCI his decision not to seek another tenure. VVS Laxman, who had been expected to succeed Dravid, had made himself unavailable last year due to personal reasons.Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, had hinted that the board wants an Indian to get the job, and is in the process of “identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks”.Gambhir will have to leave his job at KKR if he ends up as the new India coach due to the BCCI’s conflict of interest rules. He recently told that he wanted to continue working with KKR to make them the most successful IPL franchise in history.Gambhir, 42, has no experience of coaching at international or domestic level, but has been a mentor at two IPL teams: Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023 – they qualified for the playoffs both times – and KKR in 2024.During a stellar international career, Gambhir was an important part of India’s T20 World Cup win in 2007 and the ODI World Cup win in 2011. He also captained KKR for seven IPL seasons, from 2011 to 2017, during which they won two IPL titles, in 2012 and 2014.

Coming to America? Why MLS is the perfect place for USMNT's Gio Reyna to revive his stalled career, stave off irrelevance and finally become a transcendent star

Major League Soccer, not Serie A, would offer the Dortmund midfielder the perfect opportunity rediscover his game

As Borussia Dortmund took on Mamelodi Sundowns in their second Club World Cup group stage fixture, Gio Reyna could only watch from the locker room at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati. In fairness, he wasn't alone. Half of the Dortmund bench had joined him there, the German side watching their teammates toil in the scorching summer sun.

But that image – one that went viral on both sides of the Atlantic – summed up Reyna's position in Dortmund right now. It was, in effect, the perfect metaphor. Reyna the outcast, watching from afar, not even relevant enough to be on the bench.

And that's pretty much where the Reyna saga is these days. And yes, it is a saga. The Dortmund attacking midfielder is an immense talent. He is perhaps the most naturally gifted player in the USMNT setup. But at Dortmund, he has become, to put things generously, an afterthought. Niko Kovac clearly doesn't trust him even for garbage time minutes, let alone the high intensity grind of the Bundesliga that Reyna, on talent alone, is good enough to star in.

For a few years now, the story has been one of "How Reyna is going to turn things around at Dortmund." But now, transfer talk has kicked up for good. His Dortmund future was in doubt before. Now it just seems non-existent. A move is inevitable. Landing spots are tough to evaluate. Another Bundesliga club might make sense. A more permanent home for a lower level Premier League team could also work

Recently, two links have popped up: MLS and Serie A. LAFC and NYCFC have been mentioned in the domestic U.S. league. Parma seem a potential Serie A destination – with reports suggesting a deal for a $7 million switch could be in the works.

But for this iteration of Reyna, 22, full of quality but in dire need of a fresh start, MLS simply has to be his immediate future. It is the only way he can play his way into the USMNT picture. And, more broadly, it would seem to be a career-saving move for an immense talent steadily fading into irrelevance.

Getty Images SportWhere did it all go wrong?

To fully understand the Reyna plight, it is worth returning to the 2022 World Cup. There, under then-USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter, Reyna was expected to be an important piece. He had enjoyed a good run in the national team in the 18 months before the tournament, despite struggling at club level. Before the tournament, there was talk that he could be a true difference maker for the USMNT, the other half of a two-pronged creative force with Christian Pulisic.

That was where it all went wrong. Reyna played just 52 minutes that tournament, and rumors ran rampant that he was ostracized for his poor attitude in training and lack of commitment to the side. It would later come to light that the team held a meeting to decide if Reyna would continue to play for the USMNT (he stayed on, and the U.S. lost to the Netherlands in the round of 16).

His parents subsequently got involved in a messy affair that sent the US Soccer sphere into crisis. Although Reyna himself had no apparent involvement, it tarnished his reputation. There were a couple of USMNT rebirths after that – including a fine showing in the 2024 Nations League finals win and Copa America appearance. But it was otherwise his defining moment in a U.S. shirt.

And he has never really recovered at club level, either. From the start of 2023, Reyna was effectively used as a substitute for Dortmund, struggling to establish himself as the team threw away the title and then cycled through various managers. In 2024, he was loaned out to struggling Nottingham Forest, a disastrous move that yielded just one goal contribution in 10 matches. Since the start of the 2024-25 campaign, he has played just 341 minutes of club football.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesInjury concerns that just won't go away

There is no singular reason for Reyna's struggles. Footballers are people, and people are complex. A series of on- and off-field factors can complicate their lives at any given time. Some have blamed Reyna's ego – and there might be grounds for that, given his supposed 2022 World Cup antics.

Others have pointed out the fact that Dortmund haven't had any stability in the dugout, and struggled on the pitch last season. That would leave little room for experimentation or rebuilding. Kovac, when he was appointed in January 2025 with Dortmund in 11th place, did not have the luxury to tinker. He found his side and secured Champions League qualification. Sentimentality was never going to be an option.

And then there are the injuries. Since 2021, Reyna has sustained at least eight different muscular issues. He has missed a total of 80 games due to those knocks. Three of them have been roughly the same injury to his right hamstring. Over the same period, Reyna's distance covered and running numbers plummeted.

During the Club World Cup, for example, Reyna was the 19th-quickest player in the Dortmund side, with goalkeeper Gregor Kobel registering faster sprints. Reyna has never relied on pace, but it does not take a genius to figure out that there might be something going on – especially given the recurrent injury to a muscle so crucial to stretching his legs.

That's not conducive to a high-intensity, high-pressing league such as the Bundesliga. It doesn't work anywhere where the game might be remotely quick.

Getty Images SportThe benefits of MLS

So, where to now? Look at Reyna and its easy to see why he would be a perfect fit for MLS. The reasons are multiple and hard to deny. The most obvious, is his quality. A fit Reyna would comfortably be a top five player in the league, in the mix with Riqui Puig, Evander and Lucho Acosta for the best attacking players not named Lionel Messi. His understanding of space, dribbling ability and flair for the dramatic would make him a difference maker.

The main issue for Reyna in the Bundesliga, in particular, is his lack of work rate. Dig into the numbers, and this is a pretty poor defensive player. According to , he is in the 1st percentile in interceptions, 15th in tackles, and 32nd in blocks among all attacking midfielders . There are, statistically, very few worse defenders. That just won't cut it in a high intensity league.

Well, welcome to MLS, where you can afford to be a bit of a passenger. DPs in MLS are interesting things, usually difference makers in attack who are so good going one way that they don't really have to worry about the other. Puig – perhaps the most obvious comparison to Reyna – is a prime example. His attacking numbers before an injury last year were the second best in the league. His defensive numbers were quite comfortably the worst. If Messi didn't play here, he would have been MVP.

And that's the thing: MLS still loves its attacking midfielders. It is one of those rare leagues that still allows for the kind of maverick individual to play in the middle of everything and simply make things happen. There are countless low-effort, high impact players who have made fine careers in North America by talent alone.

Reyna is not necessarily lazy, but he would have a platform to be able to hone the stuff he is good at – and allow others around him to pick up a little of the defensive load. There is, from the league's perspective, a certain appeal, too. MLS academies are getting very good at developing American talent. The issue is, they're very good at shipping all of them off to Europe for a nice juicy transfer fee.

There isn't a transcendent American star in the league. Reyna could quite comfortably be that player.

Getty Images SportItaly – and why it isn't the right fit

The bad news for the MLS truthers is that there seems to be gathering steam that a Serie A move is possible. There have been reports that Reyna and Parma are in talks over a transfer, with a three-year contract on the table.

There are a few interesting things here. Three years is a short contract for a 22-year-old, and $7M is a very low fee. It would seem a punt on a player that the Serie A side don't really trust. You don't offer a three year contract to someone you consider part of your long-term plans – especially a player in his early 20s.

Parma would also be a baffling fit. Reyna probably needs to play for a team that keeps the ball and has a solid array of attacking talent he can combine with in the final-third. Last year, Parma narrowly avoided relegation, conceded more than they scored, and had just 44.2 percent possession. Only one player scored more than six goals in the league. That was 21-year-old Ange-Yoan Bonny, who now plays for Inter.

They are also a club in a state of flux – five of their starting XI from last year have left the club. They are going to be led by Carlos Cuesta, who was a fine assistant at Arsenal. But he is just 29 years old, and taking on his first head coaching job. This whole thing reeks of relegation.

And more broadly, Serie A is a difficult league for playmakers. This is a division of bruising center-backs, hard working center midfielders and imposing No. 9s. There aren't No. 10s here. The closest is perhaps fellow American Christian Pulisic, but even he is more effective out wide.

Sure, historically, the league has been kind to footballers hoping for a late career revival. But those are seasoned vets who have cut their teeth around the world. What evidence is there that Reyna is ready? Only the Premier League would be a poorer fit – and Reyna knows all too well how bad that can get.

Salah's new Mane: Liverpool consider making big bid for £80m "nightmare"

da dobrowin: Liverpool’s mastery in the transfer market must leave rivals hot under the collar. FSG have their drawbacks, criticised for their frugality, but who can reasonably rail against their formula?

da prosport bet: Arne Slot, though, has exceeded expectations this season, winning the Premier League at a canter, somehow replacing the irreplaceable Jurgen Klopp.

Arne Slot and Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool

It’s frightening to think that Liverpool are now ramping up their transfer plans, rewarding Slot with a deep-pocketed transfer chest which has already led to the signing of Jeremie Frimpong, with his Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz lined up for a reported British-record €130m (about £110m) transfer.

With a deal for Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez also in the pipeline, Liverpool fans would be forgiven for indulging in fits of excitement: Slot and the powers that be are investing in a team ready to challenge at the highest European level for many years to come.

However, more is needed in attacking areas if the Reds are to do it all over again next year and keep Mohamed Salah, who turns 33 this month, on his A-game.

How Liverpool can keep Mo Salah firing

Last season, Liverpool won the Carabao Cup and restored their place in the Champions League after a wretched 2022/23 campaign, but failed to secure the biggest prizes.

Salah promised the Liverpool faithful he would put that right, and delivered on his promise by winning the Premier League under Slot’s wing, winning the clean sweep of individual prizes in the process.

It was, all in all, a rather good campaign for the Egyptian King, but there’s no question he was overburdened with responsibility at times, dragging his profligate teammates across the finish line.

Salah no doubt misses the seamless synergy that Jurgen Klopp pieced together when creating one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever frontlines, Salah joined by Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane in turning Liverpool back into a superpower over so many years.

Now, Liverpool must reward their legendary veteran with new partners in the final third who maintain clinical rates of scoring, of supplying. Whether Salah will secure teammates on the level of Firmino and Mane remains to be seen, but FSG are certainly acting with the intent of achieving just that.

Slot driving ambitious Liverpool deal

As per TEAMtalk, Liverpool are considering ‘a fresh approach’ for Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon this summer, who is valued at around £80m.

Contacts were established one year ago when Newcastle fretted over ways to circumvent PSR, having failed to qualify for Europe. Liverpool were drawn to the possibility of signing Gordon, but in the end, Eddie Howe’s side found alternative routes to go down.

Anthony Gordon

Now, though, it’s become clear that Anfield’s interest has remained intact, and while the former Everton star would not force his way out of St. James’ Park, a return to Merseyside to sign for his boyhood club would be a big temptation.

Why Anthony Gordon could replicate Mane at Liverpool

Liverpool released Gordon from their academy when he was only 11 years old, leaving him adrift until washing up at Goodison Park, where he made his name.

Anthony Gordon for Newcastle

Newcastle paid Everton a £45m fee to sign Gordon in January 2023, and this was before he made genuine headway. Now, it’s understandable that the Magpies would want to bank nearly double that figure, and if Diaz is sold, Liverpool might just be able to make it happen.

Hailed for his “unbelievable” 2023/24 campaign by teammate Bruno Guimaraes, Liverpool’s interest came after a campaign that saw Gordon post 28 goal contributions across all competitions, earning Newcastle’s Player of the Season.

Despite winning the Carabao Cup and restoring his club’s place in the Champions League, the current season hasn’t been so kind to the England international, with injuries and suspensions disrupting the second half of the term.

The 24-year-old remains one of the most talented wingers in the Premier League, though, having pronounced himself a “nightmare for anyone” he plays against.

With levels still to scale as he makes improvements, Gordon might just be Slot’s long-term solution on the left flank, maybe even becoming Liverpool’s new version of Sadio Mane, with blistering speed and a dynamic danger to his skill set.

Sadio Mane Liverpool graphic

Last August, pundit Jamie Carragher actually tipped the Three Lions man to serve as Mane’s heir over on Merseyside, claiming he could make a “frightening” impact.

A player of such physicality and athleticism with ostensibly sharper weaponry than Diaz could certainly make a positive impact, striking a stunning partnership with the evergreen Salah, who will remain at Liverpool for at least two more years.

And if Darwin Nunez is sold and replaced by Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, with Liverpool locked in battle with Chelsea for the French forward, Slot might even have his own version of Firmino to complete a deadly new strike-force.

How to define Bobby Firmino? The Brazil forward was the glue which held Klopp’s iconic front three together, effortlessly brilliant and commendably selfless.

Mane and Salah were the goal-getters, but Firmino made it all tick, and given that Ekitike would join Liverpool as an up-and-coming Bundesliga talent, the similarities are clear to see, as Firmino arrived from Hoffenheim a decade ago for £29m.

Ekitike, 22, is a good goalscorer, having scored 22 times for his club this term, but he’s also so much more. As per FBref, he ranks among the top 10% of strikers across Europe’s top five leagues this season for assists and the top 6% for shot-creating actions per 90.

Such quality would give Gordon an inroad to a new level of goalscoring success, especially with Salah shaping into one of the game’s superlative wide playmakers in recent years.

Liverpool have enjoyed tremendous success in Slot’s newly-crafted system, but with such signings, they could reach even higher, giving Salah a new attacking partnership for the ages.

A new Mac Allister: Liverpool set sights on signing "dangerous" £35m star

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing a star who could be Alexis Mac Allister 2.0.

It has been a challenge, but Zimbabwe have 'a viable game there' – Vince van der Bijl

Fiscal discipline and open communication will be the key to reviving cricket in the country, says the Zimbabwe Cricket consultant

Liam Brickhill03-Apr-2019The last year was not a good one for Zimbabwe cricket. The national team fell four runs short of qualifying for the 2019 World Cup, and Zimbabwe Cricket came very close to being suspended from the ICC soon after – had it happened, it would have been ruinous for the game in the country.Zimbabwe will not be at the World Cup, but Vince van der Bijl, the former South African fast bowler who was hired as a consultant by ZC last year, believes that there is now “a viable game there” as ZC continues to claw its way back from the edge of the abyss.Van der Bijl’s appointment took place as the cash-strapped organisation attempted to formulate a path through multiple challenges, with Zimbabwe being put on notice for suspension from the ICC ahead of the annual conference in Dublin in June 2018. By September, though, ZC was said to be “in survival mode”. Now, an optimistic van der Bijl believes that Zimbabwe’s future could still be bright, but a lot of work remained to be done for that to happen.

The proof of the pudding is going to be in the eating. They’ve got to keep their costs below their income, and ensure the schools are continually feeding talent into the gameVINCE VAN DER BIJL

“ZC have to show the ICC, which I think they will, that cricket is a viable option and that their strategy is absolutely viable and will produce cricket of an international standard,” van der Bijl told ESPNcricinfo. “And so right now we have a viable game there. And the proof of the pudding is going to be in the eating. They’ve got to keep their costs below their income, and they’ve got to ensure that the schools are continually feeding talent into the game.”Ahead of last year’s ICC Annual Conference, ZC were mired in a $ 19 million debt, having lost out on what would have been vital revenue from a place at the World Cup. Incoming ICC funds were being drained by the servicing of debts, and cricket in the country was stagnating. “So the ICC said, and bless them for doing this, that we don’t want to lose this heritage and legacy of cricket in this country,” van der Bijl explained. “Because 15 years ago, it looked very strong. So they gave certain parameters.”Foremost among those was a roadmap for ZC to find its way out of crippling debt, and for that the board needed help from Zimbabwe’s government. “And the government came to the party. The government froze an amount, paid all the creditors that were due, and dropped the interest rate from a very high interest rate to 6.5%. So that all made it viable for the operation to work properly.””But obviously ZC has to produce cricket of an international standard, and have structures in the company which are going to continually feed that into the future,” van der Bijl added. “So there are challenges. Like any company in an operation that’s going through provincial management for example, when they’re close to bankruptcy they have to do certain things. And it takes courage. It takes courage.”Vince van der Bijl at an ICC Cricket Committee meeting with Andrew Strauss (L) and David Kendix (R)•Getty ImagesIn order to keep a drip feed (or “controlled spending”, as van der Bijl put it) of ICC funds coming in, ZC had to trim both its administrative staff and the number of teams in the domestic competitions. The national academy side, Rising Stars, was dismantled, the domestic season was abridged, and various austerity measures implemented as the organisation sought to keep losses out of the way. It hasn’t been easy. The 2018-19 season featured just 12 first-class matches, with one match postponed and two abandoned completely after increases in the price of fuel and rising hardship sparked civil unrest around the country. A rare trip to India that had been scheduled for March was also postponed, while a visit from Afghanistan was called off over ZC’s inability to have the games screened live on television. With Zimbabwe on a five-month hiatus from international cricket between their trips to Bangladesh in November and UAE’s tour in April, most of the national squad was available for the domestic season, but even that was truncated.”It’s really important playing club and, in particular, franchise cricket as that’s the build-up to the international stage,” wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva told . “As players we always want to play more games but unfortunately this season has been really short for us. Nothing beats game time and hopefully the administration resolves that next season.”For van der Bijl, that the domestic season still went ahead despite all the challenges was a positive sign. “I think the domestic game was successful this year,” he said. “Even though they had four, rather than five, teams,” he said. “So the academy infiltrated into the other franchises, which meant the youngsters were playing with experienced, old bulls who could feed information and give them the experience, which I think happens in cricket around the world. So that side was good.”As far as I’m aware, the finances have been within their controlled spending. An MD (managing director) is imminently going to be on the ground and announced quite soon I think, and that will be the final chip. Things are going according to plan, but it’s going to require fiscal discipline and open communication with the players, and everyone understanding where they fit in the game.”The work that’s being done, I think, is the work of this open transparency with the players, everyone understanding the strategy. It’s the modern way of running a company. Gone are the days where you have a dictatorial chief executive who just tells everyone: this is the strategy, this is the mission, this is your team song. This is about collaboration. I believe in collaboration and connectivity totally.”

Shahidi wants 'one good home venue' and more Tests for Afghanistan

Afghanistan captain hopes the ACB “will try harder to give us opportunities against good teams in the future”

Vishal Dikshit and Daya Sagar08-Sep-2024Apart from hoping to play Test cricket more frequently going forward, Hashmatullah Shahidi wants “one good home venue” in India instead of going from place to place, as they currently cannot play international cricket back home in Afghanistan.Afghanistan will host New Zealand for a one-off Test starting on Monday in Greater Noida, near Delhi. Their other home Tests since becoming a Full Member have been in Dehradun, Lucknow and Abu Dhabi. Sticking with one home venue will make them a stronger and more effective team in red-ball cricket, Shahidi said.”If you see, India is our home and when we host teams, the other nations have played more cricket than us here,” Shahidi said while addressing the media the day before the Test. “So hopefully we will get one good venue here in India and we stick with that. If we stick with one venue, it will be more effective for us.Related

“And one more thing, if you see our players, they have good record in first-class cricket because we play in our own grounds [in Afghanistan]. We know our own conditions very well. So hopefully that time comes in future that teams come to Afghanistan. Then our average will be even higher than what it is right now and hopefully our cricket board and BCCI give a good venue for us in India and we play a lot of cricket in one venue.”Afghanistan have played nine Tests in their six years at this level, and even though they are slotted to play 22 Tests in the current FTP – from 2023 to 2027 – only a handful are against the top sides. In the current FTP, Afghanistan have so far played against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Ireland, and after the New Zealand game, have Tests scheduled against Zimbabwe (six), Ireland (three), India (one), Australia (one) and West Indies (one).”In six years, nine games is not, I cannot say it’s a lot,” Shahidi said. “If we get a lot more chances with the good teams, we will improve, and our cricket board is doing that job. Like with New Zealand, if you see their history of Test cricket and where they are in the rankings right now, it’s a good opportunity for us and hopefully our cricket board will try harder to give us opportunities against good teams in the future. I think if we get more chances on regular basis, we will improve a lot because if we see as a team and as a country, we are brave people and we always accept challenges. It all looked rather wet and forlorn the day before the Test in Greater Noida•Daya Sagar/ESPNcricinfo

“If we get three- or four-match series in one time, I think it will be very good for us as a side. If you look at our past, we get one Test match and we start preparing for that ten days before. So it’s not easy to come to red-ball cricket. Playing matches will make us even better on judging the ball and playing good cricket in red-ball format, compared to playing in the nets. So if we play three-four games back to back I think it will be better.”Ranked 12th in the ICC Test rankings, Afghanistan are a force in the white-ball formats, ranked ninth in ODIs and tenth in T20Is. They took down teams like England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup last year and made it to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in June this year after beating New Zealand, Australia and Bangladesh.”About Test cricket, 100% we want to improve,” Shahidi said. “We want to show to the world our best format is Test cricket. And I mentioned before that we accept all kinds of challenges, and I am telling the boys also that these opportunities are very big opportunities for us, each and every one to show our skill, to show our talent and make… if I am a batsman, make a big score, big runs. So your name will be among the big names in the future. So if you want that, this is the place and time to show. I think we have that ability to do it and need to show it.”At this stage, it’s not clear how much red-ball action Afghanistan will get from this Test as a weather threat looms over the game, with rain and moderate thunderstorms forecast for the coming week.

CINCO LANCES QJE MARCARAM A PARTIDA

> !DUPLA SERTANEJA AFINADA! Renato abriu o placar logo no início do segundo tempo.

E A ETAPA FINAL?

Somente Adson perdeu, parando no goleiro Mateus Pasinato.

Jamie Porter stars with five-for but Essex let dominance slip away

Worcestershire recover from 10 for 4 before capping day with last-ball wicket of Elgar

Jamie Porter blitzed a hole in the Worcestershire upper-order to return his second Vitality County Championship five-wicket haul of the season before Essex let slip their early advantage on day one.Essex had Worcestershire 10 for 4 inside five overs – Porter and Sam Cook sharing the four wickets in a 13-ball spree – then 46 for 5 in 12 overs, before the tail wagged and the visitors reached a more respectable 266 all out shortly after a late tea.Porter, the joint leading wicket-taker in Division One, finished with 5 for 52 from 17 overs of controlled aggression on a flat Chelmsford pitch that later played to the strengths of Simon Harmer. The South Africa off-spinner marked his 100th red-ball appearance for Essex with a trio of lower-order victims for figures of 3 for 103.Captain Brett D’Oliveira sparked the Worcestershire recovery after electing to bat with a patient 136-ball 68, supported in important stands by Ethan Brooks (46) and Tom Taylor (62 not out), the later aided by Amar Virdi in keeping Essex in the field with a last-wicket stand of 64. Essex had knocked off 50 of the deficit for the loss of Dean Elgar in 19 evening overs.Porter struck with his ninth ball when he got one to jag in and take Jack Libby’s off stump. After opening-ball partner Cook removed Gareth Roderick in the next over, lbw to one that thudded into his back foot, Porter claimed two wickets in three deliveries. Both wickets fell to catches behind, Rob Jones playing down the wrong line and taken low down by Michael Pepper, and Adam Hose followed to a tentative push against one that swung away. Two partnerships involving D’Oliveira went some way to repairing the damage as the Kookaburra ball lost its initial hardness. He enjoyed a seven-over interlude between wickets while adding 36 with Kashif Ali. Ali had watched three colleagues depart, but then hit his stride with five boundaries in a run-a-ball 24 before he dragged on when Porter returned after a brief rest.D’Oliveira next found support in a 72-run sixth-wicket stand with Brookes. But the captain was fortunate to survive a sharp chance to Elgar at slip in the over before lunch when Matt Critchley got a second successive ball to jump almost vertically off the pitch.Brookes, meanwhile, was no respecter of reputation and went after Harmer, twice reverse-sweeping the off-spinner to the boundary. He accelerated after lunch, adding three more to his collection of nine fours in a 73-ball 46, before dangling his bat and becoming Porter’s 39th scalp of the season.Harmer finally joined the party in his 14th over when he induced Logan van Beek to drive lazily straight back to him. He followed up four overs later by ending D’Oliveira’s 59-run eighth-wicket stand with Taylor, trapping him lbw, and then accounting for Joe Leach by the same method shortly afterwards. However, from 202-9, the last-wicket pair collected a hitherto unlikely batting point. Virdi played particularly straight, hitting the majority of his 42 runs in the arc between long-on and long-off, including two towering sixes off Harmer. The innings came to an end five overs before the new-ball was due when the Surrey loanee clipped Shane Snater to square leg.Essex lost Elgar lbw to Taylor to the last ball before the close after he and Robin Das had been largely untroubled. They will have Jordan Cox available to bat later after he was released by England once the team had been confirmed following the toss at Lord’s, though Noah Thain had been named in the initial Essex XI in case Cox was retained.

A late show from Switzerland! Geraldine Reuteler and Alayah Pilgrim both score in final 15 minutes to give Alisha Lehmann and Co a 2-0 win over Iceland and keep qualification hopes alive

Switzerland beat Iceland 2-0 in their second group game to keep their qualification hopes alive in Euro 2025.

The players kicked off to a lively atmosphere in Bern as Sveindis Jonsdottir launched the game into action with one of her trademark long throws. Cleared only as far as Ingibjorg Sigurdardottir, the defender rattled the crossbar and the Swiss crowd’s nerves with a terrific volley from the edge of the area as Iceland threatened to upset the hosts.

Switzerland responded with chances of their own and Svenja Folmli’s powered header found its way into the back of the net via a deflection. However, a check by VAR found that as the corner was floated in, the forward had blocked off and fouled Glodís Viggosdottir and the goal was disallowed. The Swiss crowd thought they had again taken the lead when Iman Beney hit a rocket from 40 yards, but despite appearing to have flown into the top corner, the effort had only found the side-netting.

Iceland began the second-half as they started the first – by hitting the crossbar. This time, Agla Albertsdottir’s free-kick from range skimmed the top of the upright and bounced over. Undeterred by the Icelandic threat, Switzerland continued to push for the winner. Winning the ball back in midfield, captain Lia Walti robbed the ball, held off a challenge and found Sydney Schertenleib who slipped in Geraldine Reuteler to fire low into the bottom left-corner after 76 minutes. The Swiss crowd, just shy of 30,000, erupted and their celebrations would not be halted this time.

With time ticking away and the crowd growing more and more confident of victory, Alayah Pilgrim gave them yet more reason to celebrate – dispatching from distance in injury time to ensure the host’s took qualification to the knockout stages into their own hands.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Defeat for Iceland means they are out of the European Championships. The result also means that Iceland remain without a win in this tournament since 2013 and face a tough test against already qualified Norway to put an end to that rut.

    THE MVP

It is tough to look past the match winner Geraldine Reuteler, but it takes a special performance to stand-out from right backand Iman Beney was a constant threat for the hosts. Her first-half effort would have been the goal of the tournament had it not flown past the wrong side of the post. The 18-year-old has just signed for Manchester City and her new fans will no doubt be excited to see their new star shining on the biggest stage.

    THE BIG LOSER

Iceland remain goalless and pointless in these European Championships, crashing out with a game still to play in the group stage. While it remains grim reading for Icelandic fans, they have shown heart in their two defeats against Finland and Switzerland. They may feel they created more than enough chances on Sunday to take a point from Switzerland, but it just was not meant to be.

Wolves now actively tracking "interesting name" who could replace Ait-Nouri

Amid rumours that Rayan Ait-Nouri could be on his way to Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers are now reportedly tracking an “interesting name” who could replace the left-back.

Man City advancing in Ait-Nouri deal

Having already lost Matheus Cunha to Manchester United, Manchester’s other club are now aiming to deal Wolves a second transfer blow. According to Fabrizio Romano, City are now advancing their deal to sign Ait-Nouri from the Midlands club with talks already held and the left-back already approving the summer switch.

Given that they spent a large part of the 2024/25 campaign flirting with relegation before Vitor Pereira’s arrival turned things around, there should be major concern around Molineux that Wolves could suffer their worst nightmare without Cunha and Ait-Nouri.

They must get things right in search of replacements this summer. Losing Cunha was always expected after his £63m release clause came to light, but whether Wolves had the same expectation in Ait-Nouri’s case is the big question.

Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha celebrate for Wolves.

Whether caught by surprise or not, they must commence the difficult task of replacing their influential left-back if he joins Manchester City in this summer’s transfer window.

If the Algerian’s influence wasn’t clear, then his numbers should highlight just how important he’s been going in both directions for Wolves. Already without Cunha’s goals, Pereira may now have the task of replacing Ait-Nouri’s creativity and could yet turn towards an “interesting name” to do exactly that in the coming months.

Wolves actively tracking Clement Bischoff

According to Molineux News, Wolves chiefs are now actively tracking Clement Bischoff who sources described as an “interesting name” when speaking to the outlet about the Midlands club’s transfer activity.

The Brondby teenager may be one for the future, but his versatile ability to play as both a left-midfielder and a left-back mirrors that of Ait-Nouri’s. That alone should ensure that he’s among the top candidates to replace Wolves’ star defender in the event that he joins Manchester City.

Described as an “excellent” two-way dribbler when one-on-one by analyst Ben Mattinson, Bischoff looks set to be one to watch this summer. For Wolves, a deal to sign the teenager would represent smart business which considers the short-term needs of Pereira’s side as well as the long-term aim that the manager may have in place for his side.

The Old Gold are making moves for the future…

In terms of replacing Ait-Nouri’s output too, the fact that Bischoff has managed 10 assists in all competitions for Brondby this season suggests that he would be more than capable of replicating the Algerian’s influence.
