Bottom club keep faint hopes alive despite career-best haul for Warwickshire seamer

by 108 runsNorthamptonshire fought back hard after Oliver Hannon-Dalby’s career-best bowling put Warwickshire on top on the second day of their LV=Insurance County Championship tussle at Edgbaston.Hannon-Dalby’s superb seven for 46 sent the visitors all out for just 250 in a match they must win to preserve any realistic hopes of avoiding relegation. That total looks a little under par but Jack White (three for 37) then led a big-hearted effort from Northamptonshire’s bowlers who made the home batters work very hard to reach 142 for four from 55 overs in reply. The match remains in the balance on a pitch which has assisted the seamers throughout. Hannon-Dalby will be on a hat-trick in the second innings when he will be hunting the three wickets he needs to reach 100 in two seasons – he is now on 44 this year to add to last season’s 53.After resuming on the second morning on 200 for five, Northamptonshire lost two wickets to the new ball as Saif Zaib edged Hannon-Dalby behind and Lewis McManus’ 97-minute resistance for 25 was ended by an outswinger by Chris Rushworth.Hannon-Dalby then polished off the tail. Tom Taylor edged to second slip before Simon Kerrigan fell lbw and White played on next ball. When Northamptonshire bat again, for the third time in 27 days, Hannon-Dalby will start his next bowl on a hat trick.Warwickshire also found run-gathering an arduous business. Kraigg Brathwaite, on his home debut, eked nine from 58 minutes before edging a lifter from White. Rob Yates prised 23 from nearly two hours before slicing Luke Procter to second slip. Will Rhodes (44, 92 balls) produced the most assertive batting of the day before skying White to third man. Sam Hain, on his last county appearance of the season following his England call-up, collected a workmanlike 30 that is unlikely to figure in his memoirs then was trapped in front by the impressive White.Fifth-wicket pair Dan Mousley and Ed Barnard survived intact, albeit while adding to the considerable number of play-and-misses in this match, but a strong first hour tomorrow morning would pour belief into Northamptonshire’s bid for a great escape.

Expert gives update on £26k-a-week Rangers star’s injury before St Mirren

da aviator aposta: Rangers have been without one of their top attacking talents in recent weeks, but an injury expert has provided a positive update regarding his return date.

Latest Rangers news

da brwin: The Gers sealed a much-needed 3-1 win away to Hearts in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon, as Philippe Clement continues to cling onto his job as manager. Next up is the visit of St Mirren in the league this Saturday.

There are many who feel that the Belgian should have been dismissed by now, especially after the humiliating Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Queen’s Park earlier this month, but those high up at Rangers are continuing to stick by him for the time being.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement.

The future of Ianis Hagi at Ibrox has also been a talking point of late, with one recent report claiming that he could now depart at the end of the season, with other clubs contemplating making an offer for the Romanian ace.

An exit for Hamza Igamane has been talked up, too, in another worrying development, as Rangers look to retain the services of one of their most important attacking players. Now, a key injury update has emerged regarding another individual who falls into that bracket.

Expert provides key Rangers injury update

Speaking to Ibrox News, Dr Rajpal Brar said that Danilo is unlikely to be fit to start Rangers’ clash with St Mirren this weekend, but the news on his shoulder injury is positive and he could feature.

“Considering he will have missed roughly a month or so, his ramp should take a few matches. The positive news is that this was an upper body, shoulder injury, so he could at least get back to conditioning quicker in the gym compared to a lower-body injury. The process will be tolerating first team training and then bounce minutes. Even if fit, he’s highly unlikely to start the next game.”

Having the £26,000-a-week Danilo back in the fold would be a welcome boost for Clement, with former Rangers winger Neil McCann once saying of him: “I think he’s showing he’s got the movement, the pace and an eye for where he should be.

“The only thing he needs to work on is his end product. He could have easily had five or six goals tonight. Once he gets used to the league and the tempo he looks as if he will become a real good find for Rangers.”

Danilo hasn’t played since the 3-0 win at home to Aberdeen in the middle of January, but his tally of five league goals in just six starts in the competition this season highlights his importance to this Gers side.

Uh oh: Rangers playmaker Clement wants to keep now moving towards Ibrox exit

He could be on the verge of leaving for nothing.

ByBen Browning Feb 15, 2025

If the 25-year-old isn’t back in time for the St Mirren game, the hope is that he is available for Rangers’ upcoming Europa League knockout tie, with Clement’s side’s last-16 opponents set to be revealed in the draw on Friday.

'Just great to be sitting here now' – Kane Williamson all set to go against Bangladesh

New Zealand’s captain outlines his race against the clock to get ready for this World Cup after rupturing his ACL at the IPL in March, and just how glad he is to be back in action

Kane Williamson on his ACL rehab: ‘A series of really small steps’

“The most important knee in New Zealand”, as Katey Martin, the former New Zealand wicketkeeper and current commentator put it in the lead-up to the World Cup, is finally ready to withstand the load of international cricket. After netting up for almost an hour last evening – and just before hitting Chepauk’s outdoor nets again this afternoon – Kane Williamson confirmed that he will return to action against Bangladesh on Friday. At one point it seemed like Williamson would not make the World Cup at all, after having ruptured his ACL during the IPL opener in March this year, but he has made a remarkable recovery since.”Yeah, definitely. Initially, it [my comeback] was not really considered,” Williamson said on the eve of the Bangladesh game. “And to be honest, it was probably a good thing just to get my head stuck into rehab and each day and not sort of rush it. That was really my focus, and I was fortunate as well I had a really, really good team around me back home.Related

“And also fortunate not to have a lot of setbacks during that time, so there were lots of little steps forward, which I guess accumulate to being here now really and getting close and realising that if each week does keep progressing well, ticking off all those sort of milestones along the way, which there are many of them, then there might be a chance. And yeah, grateful that that was something that could be done and getting named in the squad was a really exciting moment.”Williamson subsequently found some game-time during the warm-ups against Pakistan and South Africa. In what was his first innings with the bat in over six months, Williamson went 4, 4, 4 against Haris Rauf’s high pace in the powerplay and pressed on to make 54 off 50 balls before retiring in Hyderabad.Even at the two training sessions at Chepauk, Williamson batted like he was never away from the game. On Wednesday evening, he middled almost everything against New Zealand’s spinners and then when Trent Boult rushed him with an effort ball on Thursday, Williamson coolly rocked his head out of the way.”Yeah, the recovery was … [a] journey really with a series of really small steps and just trying to take small steps forward and it certainly started with strength and range, in terms of the knee,” Williamson said. “And then gradually trying to improve that and control a bit – some of the pain around it as the load increases and we could be here all day talking about it, but I’ll fast-forward a little bit – great to be here and then and get involved in those warm-up games which were really, really enjoyable.”Then you know during those and post that were a lot of sort of return-to-play fitness parts, which were perhaps a little bit more related to fielding, time on feet and looking to try and execute some of those skills. And so, yeah, each week throughout the last period of time since I’ve been rehabbing has been really important and really valuable.”During the T20 World Cup in the UAE in 2021, a niggly elbow restricted his batting, but Williamson managed to work his way around that injury. The nature of the injury and the format is different now, but will the past experience of injury management help him this time?”Quite different injuries but yeah, I suppose speaking of this one you know there were lots of quite clear steps along the way that you were trying to tick off, different milestones in terms of returning to the next phases and those sorts of things,” Williamson said. “So quite different, a lot of data around it, mainly from other sports that was relied on and different strength numbers and heights and jumping and just heaps and heaps of different bits.”So yeah, quite different but just great to be sitting here now and looking forward to the challenges tomorrow.”Williamson’s comeback is a significant boost for New Zealand against spin-heavy Bangladesh at spin-friendly Chepauk. He is arguably New Zealand’s best player of spin along with Devon Conway, who returns to his IPL home base.

Ismail-led Hurricanes get past Stars despite Lanning 50-ball 75

Hurricanes and Stars remain in the bottom half of the points table

Tristan Lavalette02-Nov-2023Hobart Hurricanes overcame a vintage 75 from Meg Lanning, as Nicola Carey and Naomi Stalenberg chased superbly under pressure to thwart Melbourne Stars at Bellerive Oval.Bucking the tournament’s trend, an increasingly confident Hurricanes were nerveless under lights to reach the target of 143 with four balls to spare. Carey and Stalenberg combined for a partnership of 69 unbroken runs after coming together at 74 for 4 following the key wicket of captain Elyse Villani. They played risk-free cricket as Hurricanes comfortably crossed the target having been in trouble earlier in the innings.Villani and Lizelle Lee had started watchfully in the powerplay as they blunted a desperate Stars attack facing an uphill battle to defend a seemingly modest total. But Lee holed out to Sasha Moloney in the sixth over to trigger a collapse as Hurricanes slumped to 47 for 3 when Heather Graham was caught behind off Annabel Sutherland.Much like counterpart Lanning earlier, Villani defied her team’s predicament by batting calmly and hitting attractive shots around the wicket. Stars were feeling the brunt of not only Villani’s bat, but also a pesky bird feeling rather territorial in the outfield.Hurricanes took the power surge in the 11th over, but it did not have the desired effect with Villani on 41 succumbing to a Sutherland slower delivery.Meg Lanning made the Stars innings a one-person show•Getty Images

But Carey and Stalenberg were unruffled as Hurricanes continued to turn around their season after starting with a pair of big defeats against Perth Scorchers.Having only taken one wicket in her first four matches, Shabnim Ismail rattled Stars’ misfiring top order while Molly Strano shackled a succession of batters with her accurate offspin.Hurricanes’ bowlers were aided by reckless batting from Stars. Playing a lone hand with a 50-ball 75, Lanning rescued Stars from peril at 46 for 4 with no other batter reaching 20 runs.It was not the performance envisioned from Stars when Lanning elected to bat on a flat surface. She watched on glumly as opener Sophie Reid holed out in the first over to Strano, who bowled a wicket maiden.A buoyant Hurricanes went on the attack with Ismail bowling short of a length. The plan worked almost immediately with Alice Capsey baited into hitting a rising delivery straight to Carey at third. At 5 for 2, it was left to Lanning and Sutherland to steady the ship but they continued to be confronted by a hostile Ismail armed with an aggressive field.Having emerged from a form rut against Scorchers with 49 off 27 balls, Sutherland briefly showcased her growing repertoire of inventive strokes to become the youngest player to reach 1000 runs in the WBBL. She clubbed Ismail down the ground, but on the next delivery miscued a delivery angled into her body straight to mid-on.Lanning rebuilt the innings by playing cautiously initially and she received support from Sophia Dunkley, who on two survived a missed stumping from Lee off Amy Smith.Lanning decided to put the foot down in the 12th over with three boundaries off Maisy Gibson. She accelerated further after taking the power surge in the 15th over and reached her half-century in style with a clip on the leg side. Not even the return of Ismail slowed down Lanning, who smashed a full toss for six as she eyed a remarkable century. But Lanning’s dismissal in the 18th over put the brakes on as Stars finished with a total that ultimately proved insufficient in the batting-friendly conditions.

Kimber and Mulder fire Foxes chase as Foakes hundred goes in vain

Ben Foakes’ maiden List A hundred could not prevent Leicestershire Foxes from kicking off their Metro Bank One-Day Cup Group A campaign with an impressive five-wicket victory against Surrey at the Kia Oval. It was their highest winning total when chasing in all one-day cricket.Louis Kimber smashed five sixes in a brutal 89 not out off 62 balls and Wiaan Mulder struck three of his own in a 53-ball 67 not out as Leicestershire won with a comfortable 7.4 overs to spare at 329 for 5. With only two players lost to the Hundred, compared to Surrey’s 13, the Foxes look a good outside bet for this year’s 50-over competition.Foakes hit two sixes and eight fours in 106 from 107 balls while Ben Geddes sprinted to 67 off just 39 balls in the closing overs of Surrey’s 325 all out, in which seamer Tom Scriven finished with a one-day best of 5 for 66.But Mulder and Kimber’s unbroken stand of 146 in 18.1 overs, a Foxes List A sixth-wicket record against Surrey, swept Leicestershire home after Peter Handscomb’s 54-ball 57 and an excellent 46 from 37 balls by Lewis Hill had helped to propel them to 186 for 5 at the halfway stage of their reply.Foakes was unable to keep wicket after suffering a knee niggle when batting and Josh Blake, substituting for him behind the stumps, caught Hill off a gloved sweep at Cameron Steel.Rishi Patel and Sol Budinger got the Foxes off to a fast start before both were caught at mid-on, for 16 and 33, off Matt Dunn and Conor McKerr respectively.Ben Foakes scored his maiden List A hundred•Getty Images

Hill and Handscomb added 79 in ten overs for the third wicket but Colin Ackermann was needlessly run out for 10, sent back after turning for a third run that was never there, and Handscomb cut a near-wide from legspinner Steel to point.Mulder, however, was soon pulling Steel for six to bring up Leicestershire’s 200 in the 27th over, punching an extra cover four and swinging a legside six off McKerr. Kimber, meanwhile, pulled McKerr for six, off drove Dan Moriarty for another maximum and virtually settled matters by taking 21 from the 36th over, bowled by Dunn, with three sixes hooked and pulled over the longer boundary.Surrey’s innings, which stuttered at first after Leicestershire had chosen to bowl, was built around Foakes’ typically elegant effort and rounded off by a burst of spectacular hitting by Geddes, the promising 22-year-old batsman in at No. 7 with orders to shepherd the tail to a respectable total.Steel, too, played his part with a quickfire 40-ball 50 that included leg-side sixes off Ackermann and Josh Hull, a 6ft 7in teenage left-arm quick making his List A debut. Steel, who came in with Surrey in a hint of bother at 129 for 4 in the 23rd over, helped Foakes to add 95 in 14 overs for the fifth wicket.Foakes had cruised to fifty from 55 balls, having initially stabilised the innings in a partnership worth 66 with Dom Sibley, who had seen fellow opener Ryan Patel edge low to slip on 17 and skipper Rory Burns depart looking distinctly disgruntled at being adjudged caught behind for 5 from a fine ball from Chris Wright that pitched on leg stump and jagged across him.Sibley’s 34 from 40 balls ended when he nicked a flat-footed drive at Hull to the keeper and Jordan Clark hoisted Scriven for six before his cameo of 19 was cut short by an attempted back-foot force against the same bowler that he dragged down into his stumps.Foakes began to accelerate when he clubbed Mulder’s medium pace high over the short boundary on the Harleyford Road side and he then earned himself another six by just clearing deep midwicket with a pull off Hull, followed by a rasping square cut for four two balls later. He was soon past his previous List A best of 92 while Steel swung Ackermann’s offbreaks over the long boundary and collected a further maximum with a whiplash pull off Hull.Steel fell to a low catch, confirmed after an umpires’ discussion and taken at the second attempt by Patel at mid-on as he dived forward to scoop up a miscue off Scriven, leaving Foakes to complete his hundred in the 39th over but then top-edged a pull at the same bowler high into the air for keeper Handscomb to claim.Geddes began by striking Scriven way over the long-on rope but saw the innings threaten to peter out after McKerr was well caught on the boundary for a handy 13, Yousef Majid bowled for 2 and Moriarty caught at deep mid-on for a five-ball duck. The response from Geddes was to hit three sixes from the first four balls of the final over, over extra cover, straight and to square cover before he was caught from the fifth ball attempting a repeat of his last scoring shot.

Jorge Mendes masterclass, Forest shocker: The 15 biggest Championship deals

Players who perform well in the Championship regularly get signed for lavish fees by those in the upper echelons of the Premier League.

Take Archie Gray, for example. The 18-year-old shone for Leeds United in the second tier last season, helping the club reach the playoff final. Despite losing, it wasn’t long before Tottenham Hotspur came in with a £30m offer, which was duly accepted.

Elsewhere, Jude Bellingham emerged from the Birmingham City academy to establish himself as one of the finest talents in the Championship. He may have only played 41 games for the Blues, yet this didn’t stop Borussia Dortmund calling in 2020.

Over the years, clubs from the second tier have also spent a lot on players. With finances steadily improving due to more lucrative TV deals, while most clubs have bolstered their profits by selling their best talent for premium prices, Championship sides have never had it so good.

As such, we at Football FanCast look deeper into the top 15 record signings made by clubs from the division below the Premier League.

Andre Gray

Brentford to Burnley (£9m)

Andre Gray

Burnley’s 2014/15 season ended in relegation after just one season in the top flight, and Sean Dyche wasted no time splashing out the cash.

Andre Gray signed for £9m, becoming a club-record purchase at the time. He netted 23 times to fire Burnley back into the big time, carrying on this form during 2016/17 as the club avoided relegation. Money well spent indeed.

14

Dwight Gayle

Crystal Palace to Newcastle (£10m)

Dwight Gayle for Newcastle.

Newcastle United suffered relegation at the end of the 2015/16 Premier League campaign, but it was clear they wanted a swift return to the top flight. This led to the club signing striker Dwight Gayle, who arrived from Crystal Palace in a deal worth a reported £10m.

A return of 23 goals in just 32 matches for the Magpies signified how important a signing Gayle was, helping lead the club back to the promised land after just one season away.

The 35-year-old is currently playing for Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership.

13

Maxime Esteve

Montpellier to Burnley (£10m)

Vincent Kompany signed Maxime Esteve on a loan deal in January 2024, hoping that his presence would help Burnley avoid the drop.

While the Frenchman became a key member of the starting XI, it wasn’t enough to save the club from slipping back into the Championship. However, this didn’t stop the Clarets from splashing out £10m to secure his services permanently after their relegation.

At the time of writing, he has yet to miss a league game for the club as they seek an immediate return to the Premier League.

12

Isaac Mbenza

Montpellier to Huddersfield (£11m)

Isaac Mbenza

Isaac Mbenza moved to Huddersfield Town on loan ahead of the 2018/19 season, but he couldn’t keep the club in the top division, despite netting against Manchester United.

A reported fee of £11m was agreed so that Mbenza would remain at Huddersfield, yet the winger would play just 43 games over the next two seasons before departing in 2021. Not the best way to spend a chunk of their parachute payment.

11

Matt Ritchie

Bournemouth to Newcastle (£12m)

Rafa Benitez wasted no time in bolstering his Newcastle squad after relegation in 2016. Dwight Gayle had joined, but it was the signing of Matt Ritchie which looked like the most impressive piece of business.

10 goal involvements for Bournemouth the season prior went a long way in the Cherries retaining their Premier League status, and this saw Newcastle spend £12m to secure his signature.

He went on to make over 200 appearances for the Magpies across the next eight seasons.

10

Ross McCormack

Fulham to Aston Villa (£12m)

Ross McCormack at Aston Villa

In the same summer that Villa spent big money on signing Jonathan Kodjia, another striker also arrived at Villa Park. Ross McCormack had sparkled at Fulham, but a bid of £12m was always going to be accepted, despite his talents in front of goal.

The move soon turned into a nightmare. McCormack would manage just three goals during his spell with the club, working out at £4m each. Hardly money well spent in the transfer market.

9

Benik Afobe

Wolves to Stoke (£12m)

Benik Afobe helped Wolverhampton Wanderers secure the Championship title in 2018, leading the club to make his loan deal permanent.

However, he was on the move just two weeks later to Stoke City, who offered £12m for the striker. The move didn’t exactly work out as expected, especially considering the fee spent.

Across 51 matches for the Potters, Afobe managed a paltry nine goals and has since embarked on a nomadic career which has seen him play in Turkey and Qatar.

8

Harry Wilson

Liverpool to Fulham (£12m)

Fulham spent big during the summer of 2021 in a bid to secure promotion to the Premier League with Harry Wilson joining the Cottagers for £12m – and it turned out to be a crucial signing.

The Welshman was excellent throughout 2021/22, scoring 10 league goals while registering 20 assists in the second tier. He has continued to impress in the top flight, helping the club establish themselves as a solid Premier League outfit under Marco Silva.

7

Joel Piroe

Swansea to Leeds (£12m)

Joel Piroe emerged as one of the deadliest strikers in the second tier during his time with Swansea City. He scored 46 goals in 96 games for the Welsh side, ensuring there was plenty of interest in him during the summer of 2023.

Indeed, it would be Leeds United who would win the race, splashing out £12m on the Dutchman – and it looks like money well spent.

Since making the move to West Yorkshire, Piroe has netted 24 goals, and he will be hoping to end the club’s exile from the top flight this season.

6

Helder Costa

Benfica to Wolves (£13m)

Helder Costa

Wolves spent what was a club-record fee of £13m to bring Helder Costa to the Midlands in January 2017, despite sitting 18th in the league table at the time.

He enjoyed a remarkable start, contributing 18 goal involvements during his first six months, before aiding the side as they cruised to the Championship title the following season, scoring five times.

That was as good as it would get for the winger, who scored only once more for Wolves.

NWSL expresses 'regret' for continuing Angel City-Utah Royals match after Savy King collapse, says it will change protocols

After criticism from the NWSLPA, the league said future matches will be abandoned in such circumstances

NWSL acknowledges the game should not have continued King underwent successful surgery for a heart abnormalityNWSLPA issued statement acknowledging league responseFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The NWSL issued a statement Friday expressing "regret" for continuing a match after an Angel City player collapsed on the pitch last week, and said it will abandon future matches under such circumstances.

This statement comes after the league declined to abandon the Angel City vs. Utah Royals match last Friday when Savy King collapsed, received more than 10 minutes of medical attention and was transferred to the hospital. Angel City said that King underwent successful heart surgery on Tuesday to address a heart abnormality, adding that her prognosis is "excellent."

The league acknowledged its regret in a social media post, saying "the health and well-being of the entire NWSL community remains our top priority."

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The NWSL received heavy backlash from players, media and fans following its inaction last week. The NWSL Players Association criticized the league this week, saying "these moments demand humanity, sound judgment, and restraint. Any medical emergency that requires the administration of life-saving care should bring play to an end. The match should not have continued."

After the league acknowledged "regret" and plans to alter procedures for any future incidents, the NWSLPA on Friday issued a statement highlighting it as "a meaningful step forward."

"The League's acknowledgement that the game should have ended – and its commitment to adopting this protocol for the future, should it ever be needed – represents a meaningful step forward. It's a change made possible by the strength and unity of our players," it said in a statement. "Player safety is not a slogan. It is a practice. We are grateful that NWSL has listened."

REACTION AFTER THE MATCH

After last Friday's game, Utah Royals manager Jimmy Coenraets suggested the match should have been stopped.

“In those moments, I’m not sure if we should have continued the game,” Coenraets told reporters after the match. “You’re emotionally – not only them but also our players were just scared. That’s not the right situation to be in but in the end, we played on. That’s the decision other people have taken, which is fine.

"It was a really tough moment. It’s the same after the game. Like, what do you want to focus on after the game? Yes, you have the result of the game but you want to make sure people feel safe, healthy and good and I think that was the focus after the game for us.”

Washington Spirit and U.S. women's national team forward Trinity Rodman offered prayers for King and her Family on social media, adding: “In no world should that game have continued.”

WHAT'S NEXT?

King joined Angel City from Bay FC ahead of the 2025 NWSL season from Bay FC.

The NWSLPA said this week that the focus remains on King's recovery.

"Our focus remains on supporting Savy during her recovery, and we ask that her and her family's privacy continue to be respected during this time. We are deeply appreciative of the swift, professional response from the medical staff, emergency personnel and others on site who ensured Savy's safety Friday night."
