Barcelona willing to offer Man Utd £221k-p/w ace in exchange for Rashford

Manchester United could now reportedly be offered a swap deal for Marcus Rashford which would see him depart Old Trafford in exchange for another forward as soon as the January transfer window.

Man Utd and Rashford on course to part ways

Just weeks into Ruben Amorim’s time in charge of Manchester United, it seems that Rashford’s future lies away from Old Trafford. The Englishman has been left out of the squad for each of his side’s last three games, including the Manchester derby in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Tottenham.

It comes after he admitted that he felt he needed a new challenge away from the north west.

“For me, personally, I think I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps”, he told the media, before adding that he felt his best years remained ahead of him.

“I don’t expect my peak to be now. I’ve had nine years so far in the Premier League and that’s taught me a lot, that’s helped me grow as a player and as a person. So I don’t have any regrets from the last nine years. I won’t have any regrets going forward because I take things day by day and sometimes bad things happen, sometimes good things happen. I just try and keep a fine balance.”

For their part, Manchester United are willing to cash in on their homegrown star, who tops their wage bill with a massive £375,000 a week. Of course, that salary will be a major sticking point for any potential suitors, with few clubs on the planet able to afford that on top of what is likely to be a hefty transfer fee for the England international.

However, now one club have reportedly proposed a way out of what threatens to be a prolonged standoff.

Barcelona ready swap offer for Rashford

That is according to a fresh report from Spain, which claims that Barcelona are readying an audacious swap deal in a bid to try and sign Rashford in January.

The report claims that the Blaugrana are ready to offer up their own forward Ansu Fati in exchange for the 27-year-old, and even add that the club have “begun working on negotiations”.

Like Rashford, Fati is out of favour at his club and taking home a hefty salary (£221k per week in his case). Still just 22-years-old, injury and form have seen him start just a single La Liga game this season.

Barcelona winger Ansu Fati.

However, he is undoubtedly talented, inheriting Lionel Messi’s shirt at Camp Nou and singled out for praise by former boss Xavi, who dubbed him an “extraordinary” talent after working with him.

Despite this, a deal seems farfetched, especially with Barcelona already struggling with their salary cap to the point where they cannot register summer signing Dani Olmo for the second half of the season as things stand.

Adding Rashford to the mix may only make the situation worse, while United would surely demand a fee on top of the arrival of an injury-plagued Fati for any deal to materialise.

Hayley Matthews admits West Indies' batting a concern: 'We need to improve from top to bottom'

“It’s not a matter of what’s happening at the toss as we have struggled to get runs both in the first and the second innings”

S Sudarshanan22-Jan-2023Batting has been West Indies’ Achilles heel in women’s T20Is for some time now. Their middle-order woes have been hampering them for over the last couple of years. Since January 2021, West Indies’ middle order (Nos. 4 to 7) averages 12.12, the lowest among the Full Member teams in T20Is. In their first match of the women’s T20I tri-series against South Africa, Shemaine Campbelle, batting at No. 4, made 11 of the 24 that the middle order scored. While captain Hayley Matthews admitted it was a concern, she said that bigger contributions are needed from the top order, too.Related

Klaas four-for, Marizanne Kapp 52 give South Africa first win in tri-series

“We’re missing a lot of big players,” Matthews said after West Indies’ 44-run defeat. “People like Chinelle Henry, who we usually have in the lower middle order that are capable of hitting the ball out of the park and even Chedean Nation, who played today but just hasn’t been able to get going just yet. So yeah, it’s the same story all around.”We need to improve from the top right down to the bottom of our batting line-up in the way that we are playing at the moment. It’s pretty clear we are not being able to put big enough partnerships. At the same time we have a lot of injuries with key batters out.”Their issues are not just restricted to the middle order. Since Deandra Dottin’s shock retirement last year, West Indies have yet to zero in on an opening batter to partner Matthews. Aaliyah Alleyne, primarily a bowling allrounder, had never batted above No. 7 in T20Is but was pushed up to open in nine matches – four against New Zealand and five against England all at home before the tri-series. The combination had a best partnership of 23 and she was not picked in the XI against South Africa on Saturday.Brittney Cooper, who returned to the squad ahead of the series having last played a T20I in September 2021, opened the batting as West Indies added 32 for the opening wicket in their chase of 142. Cooper looked in fairly good touch, hitting three well-timed fours before being dismissed for 14 off 13 balls. Matthews said that West Indies are still trying to find their best combination at the top and backed Cooper to come good.”At the moment we are trying players and we’re giving players the opportunity to grab that opening spot,” Matthews said. “Britney Cooper didn’t look that bad out there today, so hopefully she’s the one that can come out there and really produce [what we need]. The [T20] World Cup is the main goal for us and we are trying out different options to see what fits best.”Sometimes as international cricket goes, it’s about digging deeper. At the same time we need to get some more runs at the top of the order. It’s not a matter of what’s happening at the toss as we have struggled to get runs both in the first and the second innings.”West Indies also are working around managing Stafanie Taylor, as she makes her return from an injury layoff. She had to retire hurt in the third ODI against New Zealand last September and is working her way to getting back on the field.”For now it’s just about the physio and medical people and the coaches managing the load with Stafanie,” Matthews said. “The T20 World Cup is the main picture for us here in South Africa and we want to try and manage her as best as possible and have her fit and ready for the World Cup.”

West Brom could hire great Corberan replacement who’s beaten Pep & Mourinho

West Bromwich Albion had to make do with a draw on the road last time out in Chris Brunt’s latest game as Baggies interim boss.

If it hadn’t been for Welsh veteran Joe Allen unexpectedly scoring at the death, it would have been a successive win for the Northern Irishman in the Championship, but the Swansea City midfielder had other ideas unfortunately.

Whilst Brunt has impressed in spells since taking on the reins unexpectedly from Carlos Corberan, it seems as if the second-tier promotion candidates are pressing on with replacing the Spaniard outright.

West Brom holding talks with bold Corberan replacement

As per recent reports from @talkwba on X (formerly Twitter) West Brom look set to hold talks with former Young Boys manager Raphael Wicky about taking over from Corberan, in what would be a left-field choice of replacement.

Described as being ‘well liked’ by the second-tier outfit, the Swiss manager would join the English game off the back of succeeding in his native Switzerland, alongside managing further afield in the United States with Chicago Fire.

Whilst he boasts no experience of the tough demands of EFL football yet, the Baggies will pray he acclimatises swiftly to his new surroundings if a deal is to be secured, having already made a name for himself on these shores when getting the better of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City back in 2018 as Basel boss.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

What Wicky could offer West Brom

Wicky wasn’t facing off against the battered and bruised version of City now either, with his Basel side handing out a first home loss of the season to the super-confident hosts when picking up an almighty 2-1 scalp.

In that same run of fixtures in the Champions League, Basel also managed to get the better of Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United 1-0, with both titans of the English game remarkably humbled by the 47-year-old’s methods.

Domestically in Switzerland, Wicky would also prove to be a hit when he was Young Boys manager, leading the side to a Swiss League and Cup double as boss during a very successful 2022/23 season.

Therefore, everything points in the direction that he could go on to be a great successor to Corberan’s throne in managing to get more out of an underdog team like the now Valencia boss pulled off for the Baggies when he first arrived and they were near the foot of the Championship.

Yet, despite Corberan turning West Brom into regular play-off challengers away from worrying about the drop under Steve Bruce, Wicky boasts more overall victories as a manager at 168 contrasted next to his counterpart’s 96, albeit from a significant boost of 77 more clashes.

Still, that win percentage – which comes in at 52% – cannot just be brushed aside after one look, with the 47-year-old wanting to pick up more and more victories as a boss if the Hawthorns do come calling soon.

Often utilising the 4-2-3-1 formation when in charge at Young Boys – alongside a more preferred 4-4-2 set-up – this will suit the current Baggies set-up perfectly well with Tom Fellows a constant menace down the wings alongside offering the team a strong defensive shape.

It was always going to be a tough ask for West Brom to immediately go out and find a dream successor, but in Wicky, the promotion hopefuls could strike gold on what is somewhat of an unknown entity.

"First choice" target: Arsenal want £120k-p/w ace who’d make Saka better

While there is still every chance that Arsenal can turn around their current form and finally win the Premier League this season, that is starting to feel more and more of a distant possibility with every passing game.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been almost faultless for the last two seasons, but so far this year, injuries, suspensions, and a blunt attack have seen them fall off the pace in the league and face the prospect of elimination from the League Cup at the hands of Newcastle United.

However, despite how gloomy things might look at this current moment, the Gunners remain a sensational football team, and with players such as Martin Odegaard, William Saliba, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, there is every chance they will come back stronger next season and finally haul themselves over the finishing line.

In fact, if recent reports are to be believed, the club’s number one transfer target for the summer could be just the player to help them do that, a player so sublime that he’d help the irrepressible Saka reach another level as well.

Arsenal chase dream teammate for Saka

According to a recent report from former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown via Football Insider, Arsenal have maintained their significant interest in Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.

Brown goes a step further, revealing that the Gunners have identified the Swedish goal machine as their “first choice” striker target for the summer window.

Moreover, while Brown explains the Toon’s desire to keep the former Real Sociedad star beyond the summer, he claims that the North Londoners are “determined” to bring him to the Emirates.

Alexander Isak celebrates for Newcastle

If Arteta and Co get their man, it’ll cost a pretty penny, with reports from earlier this month claiming his price tag could be as high as £150m.

Now, while that is undoubtedly an extraordinary amount of money for a single player, it could prove worth it given his sensational ability, especially as he could help Saka reach another level entirely.

How Isak would make Saka better

Okay, so while there are likely a myriad of reasons why Isak could help Saka reach another level, from how he trains to his attitude on the pitch and in the dressing room, there is one primary reason: his output.

Simply put, the “world-class” marksman, as dubbed by manager Eddie Howe, is such an incredibly dangerous player in front of, or practically anywhere near, the goal that he’d undoubtedly send the Englishman’s numbers to the moon.

For example, just this season alone, the Swedish “nightmare,” as dubbed by Alan Shearer, has racked up an outrageous tally of 15 goals and four assists in 22 appearances, which equates to an absurd average of a goal involvement every 1.15 games.

In contrast, Kai Havertz has done reasonably well in racking up a haul of 12 goals and three assists in 26 appearances, while Gabriel Jesus has been less effective, racking up seven goals and two assists in as many appearances.

Now, while neither of these returns are abysmal, they aren’t spectacular either, and at an average of a goal involvement every 1.73 games for Havertz and every 2.88 games for Jesus, neither one is remotely close to what the Solna-born superstar is capable of.

Moreover, the Gunners’ strikers were able to achieve their level of output with a significant helping hand from Saka, who, prior to his hamstring injury, was on fire, racking up a world-class haul of nine goals and 13 assists in 24 appearances, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.09 games.

Just imagine what the Newcastle star would be capable of playing alongside a winger as productive and creative as the Hale Ender, and then you may understand why we think it would be a partnership that would see both players reach stratospheric heights.

Ultimately, signing Isak in the summer will cost Arsenal an arm and a leg, but given just how deadly he has been this season and the potential of how much better he could be with the likes of Saka and Odegaard around him, it may just be worth breaking the bank for him.

David White to step down as NZC chief executive in August

White, who has been in the role since February 2012, said it “feels like the right time to step aside”

ESPNcricinfo staff10-May-2023New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White has announced his decision to step down from the role in August.White, who took over the position in February 2012, is just the fourth chief executive after Chris Doig, Martin Snedden and Justin Vaughan to lead NZC since the adoption of the Hood Report recommendations in 1995.”NZC is in a secure financial position with a solid balance sheet and long-term commercial agreements in place,” he said in a statement. “The BLACKCAPS are strong; women’s cricket is healthy, our high performance programme is producing excellence, and the community game is stable. It feels like the right time to step aside.”During White’s tenure, the New Zealand men’s team won the inaugural World Test Championship and reached the final of the World Cup three times (one T20 and two 50-over World Cups). Under him, New Zealand also took a big step towards pay equality, announcing that their women cricketers will earn the same match fees as the men under a new five-year deal in 2022.”David’s legacy has been immense,” Snedden, now serving as NZC board chair, said. “Our high performance systems have never been stronger, our cricket network has a level of financial security and stability never before experienced, and the future for women and girls has never been brighter.”David’s commercial acumen has driven revenue, enabling increased investment across the organisation. His administrative skills have unearthed unique, bespoke solutions for our high-performance programmes and infrastructure – no better illustrated than in the all-weather, turf-based training facilities now located throughout the country.”White, a former Test cricketer, had also served as chief executive of Auckland Rugby and, before that chief executive of Wellington Rugby before taking up the NZC role.”Under David, cricket in New Zealand has become far more inclusive, especially in regard to women and girls, our tangata whenua, and our Pasifika communities,” Snedden added.”When you think of how he navigated the Covid-19 pandemic, preserving the integrity of the community, domestic and international game, and his strong influence at ICC level, it makes you realise just how lucky we’ve been to have him at the helm.”

Wolves make £5m bid to appoint "unbelievable" manager as O’Neil’s successor

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a £5 million bid to appoint an “unbelievable” manager, according to a new report. Gary O’Neil’s position as Wolves manager has been under threat for a large part of the season, but the pressure has been intensifying in the last week or so, given they have just won two league games and are four points adrift of 17th place Crystal Palace.

Wolves manager latest

Wolves’ defeat to the Hammers is likely going to pile the pressure on O’Neil even more, with many probably expecting the Englishman to have been sacked by now. However, reports have stated that O’Neil is expected to be in the dugout for the game against Ipswich Town at Molineux on the weekend.

It is likely seen as the last chance for O’Neil, as defeat to the Tractor Boys will surely end his time in charge at the Midlands side. Talk regarding who could replace O’Neil has been ongoing for a while now, as Graham Potter, Rob Edwards and David Moyes have all been mentioned as options.

Potter and Moyes are currently unemployed, with their last jobs being at Chelsea and West Ham, respectively. Meanwhile, Edwards is in charge of Luton Town, but it has been a difficult time for the Hatters of late, and he may relish the chance to manage back in the Premier League.

It has also been reported that Wolves may have another option in mind, and that is West Brom’s Carlos Corberan. The Spaniard has been impressive in management so far and has done a good job at the Hawthorns. That has caught the attention of Wolves, but it would be unusual for Wolves to go after a manager who is in charge of their arch-rivals.

Wolves make £5m bid to appoint "unbelievable" José Mourinho

According to Turkish outlet AS Marca, Wolves have made a £5 million bid to appoint Jose Mourinho as their new manager. The Portuguese is currently in charge of Turkish giants Fenerbahçe and has been since the summer, and given the fee involved this may be one to take with a pinch of salt.

Mourinho, who was dubbed “unbelievable” by former Chelsea captain John Terry, was in charge of Serie A side AS Roma at the start of the year but left that role after being sacked by the Italian side. The 63-year-old had to wait six months but got back into management in July, as he was appointed Fenerbahçe boss on a two-year deal.

Overall, it has been a relatively successful spell so far, as he’s overseen 23 games in all competitions, winning 14, drawing five, and losing four. Fener are six points behind leaders Galatasaray, having played the same games, while the Turkish side sits 15th in the Europa League table.

This report claims that Wolves have made a £5 million bid to release Mourinho out of his Fenerbahçe contract. The Midlands side are apparently keen on bringing the Portuguese back to the Premier League as soon as possible. It remains unclear if Mourinho would be interested in a move back to England and especially a team second from bottom, as he stated to Sky Sports in October that he wouldn’t manage a team fighting relegation.

Mourinho said: “I’m never going to a team fighting relegation. I will never go. But I’m not going to fight relegation. It’s too hard! Honestly, I believe that has to be the hardest thing.

“It’s more difficult than playing for titles. It has to be very hard emotionally because it’s something that changes lives. I think it’s brave guys that do it.”

Their answer to Caicedo: Spurs submit bid to sign "ball-carrying machine"

Under the management of Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham Hotspur have become, without a doubt, one of the most entertaining teams to watch in European football.

The Australian’s philosophy and methods ensure that, whether at home or away, there will be a bucketload of goals when Spurs play.

However, to get the absolute most out of this style of football, the team needs a ground-covering monster in the middle of the park, someone ready to crunch into tackles and then progress the ball rapidly up the pitch, someone like Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo.

Fortunately, while they can’t go out and sign the Ecuadorian, the club have recently been linked to another exciting defensive midfielder who’s been compared to him.

Tottenham chase midfield monster

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Tottenham are one of several teams interested in signing Palmeiras star Richard Rios this month.

Palmeiras'RichardRiosin action

In fact, the report has revealed that the North Londoners have already seen an offer rejected by the Brazilian outfit but are still keen to bring him to N17, while the likes of Nottingham Forest and Everton are also pushing to land the Colombian international.

The report has revealed that the 24-year-old midfielder has a €100m release clause in his current contract, but it’s far more likely that a lower offer will eventually be accepted.

It could end up being a costly and complicated transfer to get over the line this month, but considering Rios’ ability, it’s one worth pursuing, especially as he’s been compared to the brilliant Caicedo.

How Rios compares to Caicedo

So, Spurs fans might not like him all that much – he is a Chelsea star, after all – but Rios being a primarily defensive midfielder and being compared to Caicedo is a tremendously encouraging sign, but where has this comparison come from?

Well, it primarily stems from FBref, which compared players in similar positions at last year’s Copa América, then created a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and, in this instance, concluded that the Ecuadorian was the most similar midfielder to the Colombian at the tournament.

We can better understand how this conclusion was reached by looking at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, progressive passes received, non-penalty expected goals, passing accuracy, passes into the penalty area, blocks, aerial duels won and more, all per 90.

However, it’s not just a comparison to the Blues’ midfield general that makes the Vegachí-born star such an appealing prospect, as his general underlying numbers from the last 365 days have also been brilliant.

For example, FBref has placed the “ball-carrying machine,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, in the top 2% of midfielders in the next best 14 competitions for tackles in the final third, the top 7% for dribblers challenged and take-ons attempted, the top 8% for total shots, top 10% for passes blocked, the top 11% for goals plus assists and more, all per 90.

On top of that, Mattinson also describes the dynamic ace as a “press-resistant” monster with an “engine which allows him to get up and down the pitch all game,” which makes him sound like the perfect addition to Postecoglou’s all-action side.

Ultimately, there are risks to signing a player from outside of Europe, but Rios looks like the real deal, and with comparisons to a star like Caicedo, Spurs should make sure they sign him before someone else gets there first.

Man City in advanced talks with £50m ace who’s open to January Etihad move

da leao: Manchester City are in advanced talks to sign a £50 million international forward who is open to joining the Blues in January.

Man City transfer news

da aviator aposta: Given how the 2024/25 season has gone for City so far, this month has the makings to be a busy period for Pep Guardiola’s side, as they look to try and get back to the top of the Premier League and make the knockout stages of the Champions League.

It appears there are a few areas of the pitch that Guardiola would like to strengthen this month, with a new defender and midfielder high on the list of targets. Earlier this week it was reported that City are ready to make a move and sign Juventus defender Nicolo Savona. The full-back has impressed City, and they are ready to bring him to the Etihad as they are also ready to move Kyle Walker on at some point this year.

As well as defence, signing a new midfielder will be seen as important by Guardiola, as City have struggled since Rodri was sidelined with a season-ending injury. It’s been reported that City are ready to go all out and sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad after holding internal talks over the player. Meanwhile, it was reported on Wednesday that the Blues are also ready to make a move for Lazio midfielder Nicolo Rovella. The 23-year-old is at Lazio on loan from Juventus, and City are ready to pay £33 million to bring him to the Etihad this month.

Man City in advanced talks with £50m ace

A new defender and midfielder are not the only positions the Premier League champions are looking at, as according to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Man City are now in advanced talks to sign Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt, and the player is open to a move this month.

It was reported earlier this week that City had held talks with Marmoush over a possible move to the Etihad after the 25-year-old continues to impress in the Bundesliga this season. The forward joined Frankfurt on a free transfer in July 2023, and since then, he has gone on to become one of the best attacking players in Germany, with only Harry Kane scoring more than him so far in the Bundesliga this season.

13 goals in 15 league games have alerted the attention of City, who, according to Plettenberg, are now in advanced talks to sign the forward. He states that concrete negotiations are taking place between the Premier League side and the management of Marmoush, and these talks are advanced, but a full agreement has yet to be reached.

He goes on to add that Marmoush “loves” Frankfurt, but he is open to a move this month as it represents a good opportunity for him. The Blues are offering the Egypt striker a contract until 2030, but as of now there are still negotiations between the two clubs, with Frankfurt wanting between 50 and 60 million euros, which is roughly £41-50 million.
