Inter Miami have posted a new single season points record in MLS, with Messi contributing 20 goals and 16 assists to that cause, but suffered play-off heartache over the course of a three-game series with Atlanta United. They will not be in competitive action again until February 2025.

WHAT MESSI SAID

That campaign will see Messi entering the final year of his contract, and he has posted on social media of remaining fully committed to the pursuit of major silverware in Florida: “A season ended in which we continued to grow as a club and, although we achieved some goals, we wanted more. Thanks to all the people who joined and supported us. Now let's get ready to come back stronger next year.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Messi does have the option of a 12-month extension in his Inter Miami contract, with Herons boss Tata Martino telling reporters when asked about his fellow countryman’s long-term future: “I actually don't know how limited [Messi's time in this league] is. There is a question of time passing, but I would not dare to say that it is so short.”

Lauren Winfield-Hill, Jenny Gunn ensure Diamonds edge out Vipers for final spot

Charlotte Edwards’ Vipers fall short of reaching Charlotte Edwards Cup final

ECB Reporters' Network05-Sep-2021Northern Diamonds gained revenge for their 2020 Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy final defeat by beating Southern Vipers to reach the Charlotte Edwards Cup final. England international Lauren Winfield-Hill’s 65 laid the foundation for a competitive total of 135 before veteran seamer Jenny Gunn’s 4 for 26 capped a magnificent all-round bowling display.Vipers, who were without key batters Danni Wyatt, Maia Bouchier and Charlie Dean due to international call-ups, fell 18 runs short – leaving them unable to win the trophy bearing their head coach’s name. Diamonds will next face South East Stars in the final at the Ageas Bowl. After Diamonds had won the toss, opening batter Leah Dobson and mid-off Ella McCaughan engaged in an early battle. McCaughan first spilt a catch before running out Dobson an over later. Bess Heath had her middle stump knocked back by Lauren Bell, as Diamonds recorded their lowest Powerplay score of the tournament – 30 for 2 -but Winfield-Hill and Hollie Armitage provided the backbone of a competitive total with a 59-run stand.Runs never came by the bucketload on a hybrid pitch but they ticked along at six an over – with both batters’ strike rates teetering around 100. Armitage fell for a season-high 25 when she chipped to mid-off, before Sterre Kalis was bowled attempting a ramp.Winfield-Hill reached a 41-ball half-century with a ramped four and exploded with a six and a four before Georgia Adams bounced back to bowl her. Veteran Gunn led a late flurry of runs with two sixes, and although Linsey Smith departed in the last over, Diamonds reached a strong score. In response, Vipers lost both openers in the Powerplay, with McCaughan stumped after hitting the ball into her foot and failing to get back and Adams clothing a pull to short midwicket. Paige Scholfield hammered Alex MacDonald down the ground but was undone by a perfect leg cutter next ball and Georgia Elwiss top-edged to deep midwicket.A spell of 43 barren balls without a boundary meant running between the wickets needed to be exemplary, something Emily Windsor led. Windsor had been dropped on 3 but made the most of her life with an energetic 32 – although her team-mates were largely unable to assist with the run-scoring as the required rate skyrocketed.Tara Norris holed out to wide long-on before Gunn had Alice Monaghan lbw and Bell bowled in successive balls; Windsor was then caught and bowled by Smith and Ella Chander was run out. Carla Rudd whacked the last delivery straight to deep midwicket as Vipers were bowled out for 117.

Josh Davey's career-best 75* helps Somerset dominate Leicestershire on second day

Josh Davey’s career best 75 not out helped Somerset dominate the second day of the LV=Insurance County Championship match with Leicestershire at Taunton. The Group Two leaders began by extending their first-innings score from a precarious 242 for 7 to 461 for 9 declared, Davey sharing century stands with Roelof van der Merwe, who scored 76, and Marchant de Lange, who reached 75.Then Somerset’s seamers got to work, reducing Leicestershire to 60 for 3 in reply. They closed a final session curtailed by rain on 95 for 3, with skipper Colin Ackermann unbeaten on 21.The day began under cloudy skies at the Cooper Associates County Ground, with van der Merwe on 18 and Davey 4. The former proved the aggressor, taking successive boundaries off Ben Mike as the total advanced to 272 for 7 before the second new ball was taken. It made little difference as van der Merwe moved confidently to fifty off 70 balls, with six fours and a six. He and Davey looked untroubled in extending their eighth-wicket partnership to 102.Ed Barnes eventually had van der Merwe caught at long-on to end an innings that had transformed Somerset’s prospects. But if Leicestershire thought their troubles were over, de Lange was about to prove them wrong. On no fewer than six occasions, the powerful South African swung from the hip to clear the ropes over mid-wicket. And all the time Davey was patiently accumulating to reach his first Championship half-century for Somerset off 144 balls.Roelof van der Merwe drives during his 76•Getty Images

It was 408 for 8 for lunch, by which time de Lange had reached a 38-ball fifty and the hosts were looking to bat only once in the game. They had progressed to 446 when de Lange was caught at long-on off Callum Parkinson. It remained for Davey to go past his previous best first-class score of 71, made for Middlesex on debut against Oxford University back in 2010. At the declaration, the Scotland one-day and T20 international, often an unsung hero of Somerset’s team, had faced 169 balls and hit 11 fours. All the momentum was with the home side and they maintained it before tea, claiming the wickets of Lewis Hill, Rishi Patel and Marcus Harris to leave their opponents 60 for 3.Skipper Craig Overton dropped Hill on 14 at third slip off Jack Brooks, but responded by pinning the opener lbw with the first ball of the following over.Brooks and Davey claimed a wicket apiece before Ackermann dug in, receiving solid support from Josh Inglis in an unbroken stand of 35.The action looked set to continue beyond 7pm to make up for overs lost on day one. But heavy rain set in and the umpires called play off shortly before 6pm.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After providing a tough challenge to Manchester City in the Premier League title race in the last two seasons, Arteta's men are hoping to finally cross the line this time. They are off to an impressive start in the current campaign, having suffered just one defeat thus far. They are currently third in the league table, four points behind leaders Liverpool.

  • WHAT TONY ADAMS SAID

Speaking to the Mirror, Adams said: "You need a great squad to win the Champions League because sometimes you can lose focus on one competition when you're going for the other. In 2005 Liverpool won it when they were nowhere near the title and Tottenham of course, got to the final in 2019. Listen, if Tottenham can get to the final – anybody can.

"You need a little bit of luck, I don't want to be flippant but back in my day, I was out of Europe for five years. Nowadays, you are getting more and more chances to win it and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that Arsenal might actually win the Champions League and the Premier League."

SKY fall: Suryakumar's slump becomes starker amid off-field controversies

The India captain has been in the spotlight off the field, but his returns on it are dwindling

Shashank Kishore27-Sep-20252:05

Is captaincy affecting SKY’s form?

Suryakumar Yadav’s last act on the field against Sri Lanka on Friday was a punch through the covers to seal India’s victory in the Super Over. But before that moment of assurance at the finish, he had seemed like a man just beginning to be affected by his poor form.During India’s first innings, Suryakumar had chosen to review an lbw decision against him despite knowing that it was almost certainly out. One of T20 cricket’s most feared batters had scores of only 0, 5 and 12 in his last three innings at the Asia Cup.His performance in this tournament is in keeping with a pool of scores that is hard-hitting. In ten innings this year, India’s T20I captain has managed just 99 runs with three ducks, while striking at 110. Go back further, from just after India’s T20 World Cup win in June 2024 to now, his numbers get only marginally better: 329 runs in 19 innings with two half-centuries.Related

Suryakumar: India vs Pakistan isn't a rivalry anymore

Arshdeep's masterclass helps India pull off heist

There doesn’t seem to be an apparent weakness or loophole in his game, though his propensity to premeditate – like that pick-up flick he plays nonchalantly – has caused his downfall a few times in this Asia Cup alone. Away from the glare of the game, there seems to be no issue with Suryakumar’s batting. He’s striking the ball sweetly at training, but that fluency has been missing on match days. This lean run has come at a time when the spotlight is on him for different reasons – for his gestures, expressions, comments, press conference quips, and the biggest of them all, handshake-gate. There have been disciplinary hearings off the field and drastic batting-order shuffles on it.On Friday, Suryakumar had an opportunity to find his rhythm in a dead rubber, but he flickered before fizzling out for 12 off 13 balls. An on-the-up cover drive for four off Maheesh Theekshana was as good as it got. He kept getting beaten while playing down the wrong line. A nip backer from Dushmantha Chameera beat his inside edge, and he got a leading edge over point off a slower one.Suryakumar Yadav fell for another low score against Sri Lanka•AFP/Getty ImagesSuryakumar’s first attempt at a sweep also resulted in a leading edge on to the grille of his helmet as he misread the length. He was lbw in the same over, premeditating a sweep against Wanindu Hasaraga, getting caught in a tangle and hit flush on the pad by a full delivery. He walked off tossing his bat, with a rueful look up to the sky.His only significant innings in this tournament was in the group game against Pakistan, when he struck an unbeaten 47, finishing the chase with a six and walking off with his usual gum-chewing swagger. That knock barely registered because the discourse was dominated by handshake-gate.Through all this, his commitment to his team’s needs has not wavered. He’s been the loudest advocate for flexibility in batting roles, that everyone below the openers must be ready to move up or down. Against Oman, Suryakumar chose to push himself down to No. 11, giving the likes of Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav time in the middle instead.Thirteen T20I innings without a fifty is uncharted territory. Suryakumar endured barren series in South Africa and at home against England, but had a blazing IPL before this Asia Cup. He amassed 717 runs at a strike rate of 167.91 for Mumbai Indians, scoring 25-plus in 16 consecutive innings, which is why the continued downturn in international cricket is a surprise. After the Super Four game against Pakistan, Suryakumar made headlines for his proclamation that India vs Pakistan is no longer a rivalry. For all his chatter and quips, nothing will speak louder than runs in Sunday’s Asia Cup final against Pakistan.

Wade: 'Not good enough from an Australian cricket team'

Australia captain Matthew Wade called his side’s capitulation in the final T20I against Bangladesh “not good enough for an Australian cricket team” and said it was down to the batters to find ways to score runs in tough conditions. The series concluded with Australia bowled out for 62, their lowest T20I total, having made a high score of 121 across the five matches. While echoing Dan Christian’s remarks that the surfaces were unlike any he had played T20 cricket on, and did not expect them to be replicated at the T20 World Cup, Wade noted how Bangladesh had been able to wrangle their way to enough runs in four out of the five matches and that spin had also caused problems in the West Indies where Australia also lost 4-1.Related

  • Christian: Conditions 'don't get more difficult' than Bangladesh series

“There’s not a lot of positives to take out of it, to get beaten in the fashion we did, especially tonight, was not good enough from an Australian cricket team regardless of the personnel we’ve got here,” Wade said. “The reality is we need to get better at spin, myself included. There’s a lot of players in this team who need to find a way to score runs in these conditions.”[Bangladesh] are a terrific team in their own conditions, their spinners bowled really well, and they still found a way to find the extra runs and that’s something we can definitely get better at doing. Whether they came a little harder at the front and that is something we maybe needed to do earlier.”Wade was confident the less experienced batters among the group would not carry baggage away from this tour and laid the blame for the run-scoring woes to the more senior figures.”I do not blame the young players one bit,” he said. “Myself, Moises [Henriques], Dan Christian, we are all experienced players and we needed to do better. Those [younger] guys got the opportunity to experience these conditions and if they take it as a learning opportunity to become better players, as we all should, then at least we’ve learnt something.”I’ve played a lot of cricket and they are certainly the most challenging T20 international pitches I’ve ever played on. What they’ve seen out here will be very valuable going forward but it’s on the senior batting group, we needed to get more runs. If the batters can go back and find a way to get those extra runs in challenging conditions that will hold us in good stead.”The final lead-in to the World Cup for Australia remains to be confirmed with talk of a potential series against Afghanistan and West Indies in Sri Lanka which would overlap with the resumption of the IPL. Wade said he expected all the players who opted out of this tour due to bubble fatigue to be available for selection. Steven Smith was kept out with an elbow injury and how someone of his skill was missed in Bangladesh.

The NWSL is considering a handful of groups for a 16th franchise and Cincinnati is set to compete with Denver and Cleveland for the next expansion team. An announcement on the location is expected before the end of the year, according to a report from .

Cincinnati's bid is bolstered by backing from the ownership of MLS side FC Cincinnati, as well as the fact that the city already has a stadium purpose-built for soccer. Cleveland and Denver have both pledged to build stadiums, with the former purchasing land on which to construct one. The expansion bid is expected to cost around $100 million, almost double the $53M Bay FC and Boston paid in 2023.

"The NWSL Cincinnati bid team is thrilled that Caitlin Clark has joined our ownership group in pursuit of bringing a women's professional soccer team to our city," the NWSL Cincinnati bid team said.

USA TODAY SportsWHAT JESSICA BERMAN SAID

In a pre-NWSL Championship news conference, league commissioner Jessica Berman expressed her excitement at Clark's involvement in ownership: "Her contribution to women's sports is historic, having her interest in the NWSL is an honor, we couldn't be more excited about her sharing her own personal story about being a young soccer player and loving the game."

WHAT NEXT FOR CAITLIN CLARK AND CINCINNATI?

The league is expected to announce the location of the new franchise before the end of the year. Should that happen, Clark will be added to a long list of athletes invested in NWSL, that already includes the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Serena Williams and Kevin Durant.
