I think he’s a very good coach but at the end of the day it’s not my call, it’s the management team that’s running Manchester United that have to decide how we best run the team in many different respects. But that team that’s running Manchester United has only been together since June or July. They weren’t there in January, February, March or April – Omar [Berrada, CEO], [sporting director] Dan Ashworth – they only arrived in July. They’ve only been there…you can count it in weeks almost – they’ve not been there a long time so they need to take stock and make some sensible decisions. Our objective is very clear – we want to take Manchester United back to where it should be, and it’s not there yet, obviously – that’s very clear.”

Root is currently in imperious form, but he’ll be bordering on 35 years of age by the time the next Australian tour takes place in November 2025.While Root has a passable average in Australia there’s the not so minor fact that in 27 innings he is yet to compile a Test century in the country. On Root’s three tours of Australia, England have lost 13 of the 15 Tests played. England’s former skipper is yet to experience the thrill of victory in Australia, and this is another major hurdle. The scars are unhealed.Batting in the middle order, Pope had a poor last tour of Australia and should be considered a potential weakness. It’s not just his renowned skittishness that should interest the Australian pace bowlers, there are also some technical flaws that can be exploited.The Australian pace bowlers will hope to break the risk-taking opening partnership and bring Pope to the crease early. If they then dismiss Pope quickly it means the ever dangerous Root will be batting while the ball still has plenty of shine. That is a dream situation under Australian conditions.If Australia do cause concerns for Pope, and England are forced to omit him, then the crucial No. 3 spot becomes a revolving door. Currently the English squad is limited in players who are qualified to do a sound job at No. 3. Without Pope, England would also be missing a suitable replacement captain if Ben Stokes suffers an injury.That would be a crucial double blow to England.

However, Australia’s excellent pace attack is also at a stage where age has a diminishing effect. Only Pat Cummins, who is also a fine captain, will be at the not-so-worrying age of 32. Both Mitchell Starc, who’ll be 35 by the time of the England tour, and Josh Hazlewood, age 34, are at a point where skill declines and injuries have a detrimental effect.Offspinner Nathan Lyon is also in that category, and ageing is more of a concern for bowlers than it is for excellent batters like Root.Meanwhile, Australia received the news they’ve probably been expecting but were dreading: former opener Will Pucovski is most likely going to be missing from their ranks following medical assessment.In form and healthy, Pucovski would be a blessing for Cummins’ team following the retirement of David Warner with his pugnacious skill. Australia now have a season to unearth a suitable replacement for Warner or else they’ll have to continue the unsatisfactory experiment of using Steve Smith as an opener.Unfortunately Pucovski’s technique against short-pitched bowling was laid bare at first-class level. It was absolutely disastrous by 2024, when Tasmanian quick Riley Meredith floored him in a Sheffield Shield match. Pucovski became a concern for any selection panel and by this stage nobody could risk choosing him for Australia.In his current cricketing and mental state it’ll be a blessing if Pucovski is left to continue his rehabilitation in virtual anonymity.In the meantime England is wisely pursuing a policy of choosing players who can have a positive effect under Australian conditions.Whilst this is an admirable policy, England’s bigger priority is for Pope to find consistently good form and cement the crucial No. 3 position. If Pope is still misfiring, then England’s tour in 2025-26 could be another frivolous trip to Australia.

“But the main difference for him is that we are facing a low block many times. It is not that it never happened at Newcastle but not as much, I think. This season the league has changed, we see so many more low blocks than last season.

“But I see this not only against us, I see this in many games. It makes it harder for him compared to his time at Newcastle but I think it is also him adjusting to his teammates and his teammates adjusting to him. But it is obvious and clear that we have not the profile of [Newcastle’s] Jacob Murphy, for example, available at this moment at this time.”

Whether Liverpool find their own version of Murphy in the January transfer window is now the big question. They’ve already been linked with Antoine Semenyo, who’d certainly offer the same quality, but he may not be the only one on his way.

Joined by Liton Das, Haque was able to bring the target down to double figures, but appeared anxious to increase the scoring rate, going down the wicket and lofting the ball into vacant spaces on the on side on a couple of occasions. Eventually, he fell to a catch at leg gully as well, Warrican claiming two of three wickets for the day. When Das was smartly caught by Da Silva for 22, and Taijul Islam misjudged a quicker one fired in straight at him, both to Cornwall, the end seemed near at 163 for 8.Miraz and Nayeem Hasan, though, put in a dogged effort, with Miraz beginning to show signs of aggression as the 200-mark neared. Alzarri Joseph struck a massive six over mid-wicket, but fell for 9, when a leading edge off Islam took a deflection off silly mid-off and was gratefully accepted at cover by Najmul Hossain Shanto.Hasan then struck twice in what turned out to be the final over of the West Indies innings, getting Bonner to lose his patience in attempting an awkward reverse-swipe, and going through his legs to rattle the stumps.Cornwall was the last man out, holing out to Rahim at deep mid-wicket, completing a remarkable collapse of four wickets in just 21 balls. The 117 posted by West Indies was their second-lowest ever against Bangladesh, but there has been something different about this West Indies team in the Test series, despite them missing a number of more experienced players. There have been crucial batting contributions from almost all of their players, and captain Brathwaite’s bowling changes and field placements have also been spot on. On the day that mattered, though, it was Cornwall and Warrican who came to the party and made the most of the conditions to seal a famous series win.

From Chelsea and Blackburn all the way to Celtic, Chris Sutton had the pleasure of working with some incredible players. The former striker recently took the time to name a team full of his best teammates and to say that the XI was impressive would be an understatement.

Starting with the backline, Sutton named Tim Flowers in goal followed by a back three of Johan Mjallby, Marcel Desailly and Joos Valgaeren with Desailly being the pick of the bunch.

The former Chelsea defender won the Champions League twice throughout an impressive career and also picked up the World Cup with France in 1998. He remains one of the best centre-backs to ever feature at Stamford Bridge.

Sutton’s midfield was arguably even more impressive, however. The 52-year-old casually name-dropped Ruel Fox, Tim Sherwood, Stiliyan Petrov and Lubomir Moravcik.

Particularly full of praise for Petrov, Sutton said: “He would bomb on, and we felt like we could take on anybody.”

He arguably saved his best players for his frontline, however, as he dropped Alan Shearer into the conversation. Teammates at Blackburn, the strike partners won the Premier League together in the 1994/95 season and both enjoyed excellent campaigns.

Sutton ended the season with 21 goals in all competitions, whilst Shearer finished up with a whopping 37 in 49 games on his way to becoming the greatest goalscorer that England’s top division has ever seen.

Only Harry Kane can say that he’s near Shearer and there’s no doubt that he’ll be eyeing that record if he returns to English football before he calls time on his career.

It speaks volumes about Sutton’s praise for the final player in his team that he placed him above one of the Premier League’s best.

Sutton names Larsson as "best" teammate

Finishing his team with aplomb, Sutton named Henrik Larsson as the “best” player that he played with. One of the greatest players to play for Celtic, Larsson’s place in this side was always inevitable.

The Swede should have a place in every all-time Celtic XI and is likely to feature in similar lists from his former teammates. During his time with the Bhoys, the forward scored a stunning 227 goals in 301 games. It simply doesn’t get much more clinical than that.

We’ll never get to see a strike partnership between Larsson and Shearer, but it’s easy to imagine the chaos they would have caused together at the peak of their powers.

That said, the Celtic legend did have a brief spell in the Premier League for Manchester United, in which he scored three times in 13 games at the end of his career. Whether that record would have been improved if he joined the Red Devils at his best is the question, but Celtic fans will be glad that his best work came in Scotland.

The Blue Jays were so close to winning their first World Series title since 1993 on Saturday night but then the Dodgers tied Game 7 in the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run by Miguel Rojas and won it in the 11th inning after a home run by Will Smith and some more clutch pitching by Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

It was a devastating loss for the everyone involved with the franchise and all of the fans at Rogers Centre who were so close to having one heck of a celebration, only to see it all fall away in stunning fashion.

It must have been especially rough for Don Mattingly, who finally made it to the World Series for the first time in his legendary career. The former Yankees great has served as the Blue Jays bench coach since 2022 and he was just three outs away from earning a championship ring, only to have it ripped away from a franchise he once managed.

Moments after the final out Mattingly was seen having a heartbreaking moment as he sat in the Toronto dugout and watched the Dodgers celebrate their second straight title. Blue Jays star Bo Bichette, who had a huge three-run homer in Game 7, was seen giving Mattingly a hug before the two headed to the clubhouse.

Mattingly never made it to the World Series as a player and fell just short a few times during his stint as the manager of the Dodgers. It would have been pretty cool to see him celebrate finally earning a ring but that sadly didn't happen as the Blue Jays lost both Game 6 and 7 at home to the Dodgers.

Fans had some emotional reactions to that moment between Mattingly and Bichette.

Legendary Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, who is a die-hard supporter of Manchester United, has publicly pleaded with Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand to approach the team management and offer his help to fix a glaring issue. United blew a one-goal lead to draw 2-2 for the second week in a row away at Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday, missing the chance to move into the top four.

• United's topsy-turvy start to the season

  United staged a remarkable comeback in October after a rocky start to their 2025-26 campaign as Ruben Amorim's side won three successive Premier League matches against Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton. It was finally looking like the star-studded attack that the club had assembled in the summer transfer window was finally delivering as they quickly climbed up the table.

  However, the Red Devils have experienced yet another dip in form at the start of November, recording back-to-back draws 2-2 draws against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham.

  'Stressed out' Bolt reaches out to Ferdinand

  Eight-time Olympic champion Bolt has admitted to being "stressed out" by United's performances this season. After the Spurs draw, Bolt reached out to United legend Ferdinand with a voice note and pleaded with the former England star to help the club fix a glaring issue.

  In the voice note, played on Rio Ferdinand's podcast, Bolt said: "I just watched the United game, one of our biggest problems is when we invite pressure onto ourselves. They're always running back, all we do is invite pressure. Please (Rio), I'm begging you man. Get to the team and say something. You are one of the greatest defenders Man United ever had, please bro, it's stressing me out. I know you have nothing to do with this but tell the guys to pass the ball quicker. Oh my God, bro. They don't know how to defend one-on-one. Shaw is the only one who seems like he understand. All they know is system, lineup and play well. 'They don't know how to step up, push the defender and then go back into your line. I push up (as a defender) and the midfield slots in. Please, Rio, get to somebody."

• 'We're still in this rebuilding phase'

  Unlike Bolt, Ferdinand was less scathing with his analysis of Amorim's side as he said: "There were times against Spurs where it (United's defence) wasn't working as a cohesive unit. We're still in this rebuilding phase and I think that's why we've got to manage the expectations of fans. I've seen some people going off on one, going crazy saying, 'the manager ruined it with his substitutions'. But if he didn't make any subs and we still got the same result, everyone would be going, 'why didn't he change it?'. He's damned if he does, damned if he doesn't sometimes. Arne Slot won the league last year, went to [Manchester] City this year and got it totally wrong. It does happen."

  Amorim admits to United's flaws

  Amorim agrees that there is still plenty of work to do to further improve the team's performances, as he told after the Tottenham game: "During the game we felt like the three points were there to take home. But then with everything that happened, Harry Maguire and Casemiro coming off and conceding two goals… we scored again and it's a point. When you cannot win you don't lose, once again we did that. We have so much to grow as a team, because today was our day to win this game. 

  "We need to look at ourselves, we were not pressing with the same intensity, we felt comfortable but we need to understand that if we had more bravery we kill the game. But sometimes this happens, you have a better first half than second. We believe in our capacity to score goals until the last minute. It's a little frustration, but also pride at the response of the players at the response to second goal of Tottenham. This is the tip of the iceberg, we are at the beginning of becoming a strong team, so we have a lot to do."

In a record-breaking event, Services defeated Assam in just 90 overs, making it the shortest completed match in Ranji Trophy history.The match set a new mark in terms of balls bowled (540) to reach a result, surpassing the previous record of 547 from the 1961-62 clash between Delhi and Railways. Only 359 runs were scored and 32 wickets fell.The game also saw a historic feat: two bowlers from Services – left-arm spinner Arjun Sharma and left-arm seamer Mohit Jangra – claimed hat-tricks in the same innings, the first time this has occurred in the Ranji Trophy’s 91-year history.
