Sky Sports: Man Utd eye move for new "unplayable" ace to replace Rashford

da betobet: Manchester United are now considering a late swoop for an “unplayable” Premier League attacker, with Marcus Rashford closing in on a move to Aston Villa, according to Sky Sports.

Rashford's time at Old Trafford coming to an end

da dobrowin: Rashford has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford ever since a bombshell interview in December, in which the forward expressed he is “ready for a new challenge”, and he is now set to seal a move away from his boyhood club.

The United academy graduate is due to have a medical to complete a move to Villa Park, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealing the Villans will have the option to make the deal permanent for a fee of £40m at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has not been a part of Ruben Amorim’s plans for nearly two months, with his last Premier League appearance coming against Nottingham Forest back in December, and the manager recently hinted he hasn’t been giving 100% in training.

“It’s always the same reason – the training, the way I see a footballer should do in life. It’s every day, every detail. You can see on the bench we miss a bit of pace on the bench, but I would put [Manchester United goalkeeper coach Jorge] Vital before a player who doesn’t give the maximum every day.”

Man Utd now prioritising move to sign £145k-p/w ace who may replace Onana

    Onana has continued to struggle…

    ByTom Cunningham Feb 1, 2025

With Rashford now poised to leave, Amorim is now tasked with finding a replacement, and Sky Sports report that Villa’s Leon Bailey is one of the players “under consideration” for a late transfer swoop.

The potential deal to sign Bailey would be separate from the Rashford move, which has seemingly already been agreed, with the Englishman set to undergo a medical.

Aston Villa'sLeonBaileyin action with Celtic's Greg Taylor

The Villa winger is just one of the names under consideration for a move to Old Trafford, with the Red Devils yet to make a formal approach, but there could be developments before the deadline on Monday.

What Bailey could offer Man Utd

The £120k-per-week attacker has looked impressive at times in a Villa shirt, and he was particularly potent in front of goal during the 2023-24 campaign, amassing 19 goal contributions in 35 Premier League games to help his side secure Champions League football.

The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell has lauded the 27-year-old as “unplayable” during his time with the Villans, however, he has struggled to replicate last season’s form this term, picking up just one goal and three assists in all competitions.

As such, there is some doubt over whether Bailey would be a solid signing to replace Rashford, but United’s options are likely to be limited at this stage of the transfer window, and he could make an impact if he is able to rediscover his previous form, making this one to watch.

'I thought that my red-ball career had passed me by' – Turner after drought-breaking century

Right-hander shed his white-ball specialist tag with a brilliant career-best 128 to put WA on the cusp of back-to-back Sheffield Shield titles

Tristan Lavalette25-Mar-2023As his first-class career stalled, unable to break back into Western Australia’s powerful batting order, Ashton Turner made a conscious decision last year to focus on the shorter formats. It seemed to be a wise move with Turner enjoying a spectacular recent BBL season, where he had a bounce back with the bat to lead Perth Scorchers’ title defence.Even though his stock has been rising in the T20 format, underlined by being bandied around as a captaincy replacement for recently retired Aaron Finch, 30-year-old Turner never wavered over his desire to again play for WA in the Sheffield Shield. After some self-doubt during a long exile from red-ball cricket, Turner’s determination and temperament manifested superbly with a drought-breaking century to lead WA’s stranglehold of the Shield final over Victoria.Related

    • Ashton Turner: 'As confident in my leadership as I've ever been'

“Overnight the game was evenly poised. We knew the first session was going to be really important, so to be able to play a role in getting us in front of the game at stumps is very satisfying,” said a typically measured Turner after day three.”There’s definitely stages where I thought that my red-ball career had passed me by. I sat and watched us win the Shield last year and couldn’t poke many holes in that side.”Having only returned to the line-up last week against Victoria, after last playing in the Shield in October 2020, Turner’s experience and composure was needed after WA slumped to 4 for 53 on day two in reply to 195.In a similar vein to his repeated BBL heroics, Turner decided to counterattack on a seaming green-tinged WACA surface and motored to 28 off 20 balls. He particularly took on short-pitched bowling from impressive young quick Mitchell Perry with muscular batting to quickly change the game’s momentum.”Often when wickets have fallen, emotions are running high,” Turner said. “[I] try to play on skill and I’ve got a game plan…try to stick to that as much as I could.”Obviously you need to be adaptable to the conditions, but I’m really clear how I want to bat. It’s the opposition’s job to try and drag me away from the game plan.”He started day three stuck on his overnight score of 49 for 40 minutes before his rhythm returned as Turner notched his fourth first-class century just before lunch.Ashton Turner made his 4th Sheffield Shield century•Getty Images

The milestone evoked thunderous applause from his teammates and recently retired WA great Shaun Marsh to underline Turner’s standing within the team’s inner sanctum”I’ve had periods where I haven’t been scoring runs and playing well and not being picked in teams,” Turner said. “In those moments, you try to go back to basics and go back to the process.”I feel like I’m playing well and things are going my way. I try to stay as level as I can because when things aren’t going well I try not to beat myself up.”After their quicks tore into Victoria’s batting order late on day three, WA are on the brink of a historic treble of domestic titles for the second straight season following a period largely in the wilderness.”As a kid growing up in Western Australia, I was probably the last generation that grew up putting red-ball cricket on a pedestal,” Turner said.”I watched many great West Australian teams but probably not produce the silverware they would have liked.”To be part of a shifting of the culture and fortunes of WA cricket…it’s a goal we’ve had and built towards.”

Newcastle eye move for "magical" ace who’s far better than Almiron & Murphy

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United were the Premier League’s main entertainers in December, as the super-confident Magpies ended up scoring goals by the bucket load on the way to some convincing victories being picked up.

Indeed, across the entire month in all competitions, the Toon fired home a ridiculous 21 strikes, which then saw Howe’s men rise up the league standings to a pretty fifth position.

    Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

Still, there are spots in his team that the Magpies manager will want to improve during the transfer window, with concerns over depth arising down the right channel.

Newcastle considering move for "magic" attacker

As per a report by journalist Graeme Bailey, various different Premier League clubs are considering a move for Celtic ace Nicolas Kuhn this January, as the Bhoys attacker continues to tear Scottish Premiership defences to shreds.

The report states that Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace are all keen alongside Newcastle, with the Magpies in for an almighty battle to win their desired man.

But, with it looking increasingly likely that Miguel Almiron will depart St James’ Park this month according to reports, Newcastle will hope they can be successful in this pursuit.

Moreover, the “magic” Magpies target – as he was once labelled by current boss Brendan Rodgers – would offer Jacob Murphy some great competition on Tyneside if a move does get finalised, with the German winger far surpassing the 29-year-old’s numbers playing in Scotland this season.

What Nicolas Kuhn could offer Newcastle

It does appear that the in-demand German has outgrown his surroundings at Celtic Park – hence all this frenzied interest coming from England – with the ex-RB Leipzig man just toying with defenders week in week out now in Scotland.

This campaign to date, Kuhn has fired home an outrageous 14 goals from 25 overall games, with a further 11 assists also tallied up.

One of those sublime strikes even came on Europe’s grandest stage as the tricky Bhoys number 10 delicately curled an opportunity home in the Champions League, which is a competition Newcastle would love to compete in again very soon if they can enter into the top four spots in the Premier League in 2025.

Adding in top-quality talents such as Kuhn could help them achieve that far-off goal, with the Toon also wanting to get rid of some deadwood now surfacing in their camp in the form of Almiron down the right.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear that Kuhn would fit in well with the gung-ho style of play Newcastle have perfected over recent weeks, with more progressive carries and successful take-ons managed over the last year compared to both Murphy and Almiron.

On top of that, his goal and assist numbers for the campaign to date completely blow Murphy out of the water, who has just nine goal contributions in all competitions in contrast.

Also similar to Anthony Gordon according to FBref’s similar players feature, Kuhn could well seamlessly fit into the set-up under Howe, with the potential for the Magpies to cause even more issues for Premier League defences to cope with if the Celtic attacker relocates to Tyneside.

Whilst Howe will likely be content with what he has currently, January will be an apt time for him to add even more quality to make 2025 a memorable year at St James’ Park.

Aston Villa interested in signing £30m player with same agent as Barkley

da 888: Aston Villa and NSWE are interested in signing a “quality” £30 million player with the same agent as Ross Barkley, according to a new report.

    Aston Villa transfer news

da pixbet: Villa boss Unai Emery will have his eyes on January as it is an opportunity for him to once again strengthen his team ahead of the second half of the season. The Midlands side still have plenty to play for in the Premier League and will also hope they will be playing Champions League knockout football come the end of January.

While incomings may be the priority, Villa and NSWE could have a headache on their hands, as Napoli are interested in signing Jhon Duran. The Italian side want to bring in a player who can be a “sidekick” to current frontman Romelu Lukaku, and Duran is the player they have their eyes on. Villa chiefs are not looking to sell the Colombia international, but an offer between £28-33 million could test their resolve, as talks with intermediaries have already begun.

Aston Villa now open contract talks with 21 y/o loan star Filip Marschall

Unai Emery is keen to tie down a promising Aston Villa player.

    ByBrett Worthington Dec 18, 2024

On a positive note for the Midlands side, they have opened talks with young goalkeeper Filip Marschall over a new contract. The 21-year-old has been impressing this season while on loan at Crewe Alexandra, and given that he is highly rated at Villa Park, they are keen to secure his long-term future. Marschall is under contract until 2027, but he could soon find himself in the first team picture.

Aston Villa now interested in signing “quality” £30m player

As well as looking to tie Marschall down to a new contract, Aston Villa are interested in signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Chelsea, according to Caught Offside. The midfielder only joined the Blues in the summer transfer window, but it is a move that has yet to get going.

    Chelsea's KiernanDewsbury-Hallin action with Southampton's Kamaldeen Sulemana

Dewsbury-Hall, who has been dubbed “quality” by Graeme Bailey, was a key player under Enzo Maresca last season at Leicester City. The midfielder was a key part of their promotion, so it wasn’t a surprise that the Italian took him to Stamford Bridge, but what is a surprise is that the midfielder has hardly featured.

The 26-year-old has played 14 games across all competitions this season, but only five have come in the league, and all have come from the bench. Most of Dewsbury-Hall’s minutes have come in the UEFA Conference League, where he has been a regular all season. His time at Chelsea appears to be coming to an end, as this report states that the Blues are open to offers for Dewsbury-Hall and are keen to recoup the £30 million they paid in the summer.

Aston Villa are among the number of Premier League teams looking to sign the midfielder in January. They face competition from the likes of Manchester United, Leicester City, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Rangers. What may give Villa the edge in the race is that Dewsbury-Hall’s agent, Wasserman, is also the same agent for Barkley, who joined Villa in the summer.

    Pakistan reduced to panic

Even a kid knows you want a turning pitch against England, Pakistan’s captain Misbah-ul-Haq observed, Instead, the pitch only turned on the final day and it was Pakistan who were reduced to panic

Umar Farooq17-Oct-2015In a dramatic turnaround on day five, England almost gave a scare to Pakistan, transforming four dull days into a decisive climax. Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan captain said his side was caught up in “panic” as they lost their last five wickets in five overs but that salvaging a dramatic draw protected their confidence and left them with “no sense of defeat”.”If a situation changes quickly you have to cope with it,” said Misbah. “Credit should be given to the England side in the way they scored almost 600 runs and kept us under pressure. They kept control and later pushed us in a panic situation but it’s quite obvious that when such matches are saved it keeps the confidence alive. Had we lost this, trailing the series by 1-0, then it could have quashed the confidence.”At least we are not down. In Dubai it’s a different pitch, different game and it’s our hunting ground as well. We did make a couple of mistakes that we ought not to repeat. The shot I and Younis played wasn’t needed at that time – we could have easily survived and played through.”For four days the pitch was cursed for its slowness and unresponsiveness. But on day five the twist started when James Anderson removed Shan Masood and Shoaib Malik in the same over, leaving Adil Rashid to take charge later, picking up a five-wicket haul to leave Pakistan with a lead of 98.”It all happens with pressure,” said Misbah. “It was the fifth day with rough patches and obviously we made mistakes with two ugly run outs and bad shots to push us into the situation.”Such mistakes take you nowhere and push you in such situation where you crumble under pressure. We obviously had a plan to play sweeps against the offspinner and I should have struck with the option but I picked the wrong shot. It was a big blunder on the wrong time.As England take the moral victory, it was like deja vu for Pakistan. “This is what Test cricket is all about. We have been in such a situation so many times. I can recall two occasions in Galle – one we won and the other we lost. So we knew how to cope with this situation.”We were looking to take wickets early on with the spinners and later on with the light fading we were looking to go with seamers and the plan worked. We knew the ball wasn’t coming on the bat and with the light staying even until 5.40pm we had to be on toes.”The pitch was expected to turn at least from the day three but it didn’t respond at all until the final day. Misbah once again hit out the surface. “It was a clear message what we wanted. Even a kid knows that when we play against England we always want a turning pitch. I don’t know why the pitch wasn’t made the way it should have been. I am equally surprised as you are about it.”

England face dilemma in fine tuning attack

With Chris Jordan blowing more cold than hot, England could turn to Steven Finn or Harry Gurney at Trent Bridge but both present their own issues

    David Hopps29-Aug-20142:41

Hope Cook and I feed off each other – Hales

The ability to play tunes on your teeth, which occasionally found its way onto the bottom of the bill in the old Music Halls, is now most commonly seen from bored teenagers on YouTube. England’s bowling coach, David Saker, has so far only been seen scratching his, but he might well be playing a tune or two by the end of the Royal London one-day series if England’s pace bowlers give him any more cause for angst. If Saker does rap out a tune on his molars then Elvis Presley’s might be a good place to start. “If you are looking for trouble, you came to the right place” is a suitable warning as England consider the attributes of the three pace bowlers thought to be contesting the final place in the third Royal London ODI against India at Trent Bridge.Steven Finn is an option for England at Trent Bridge•PA PhotosSaker’s teeth scratching on the England balcony was caught by the TV cameras during India’s trouncing of England at Cardiff as Chris Jordan purveyed an over including five leg-side wides. He bowled 12 in all, treating his loss of line firstly with smiles and then with baffled shakes of the head. That Jordan blows hot and cold is something England might have to get used to. The question is how hot and how cold. His technical oddity in which he often places an additional finger behind the ball has always been with him and has been blamed for occasional forays down the leg side. One or two can be forgiven as long as his hot spells continue, but 12 wides is more than England would want their entire attack to bowl in a series. The defence for Jordan is that to some extent MS Dhoni was old-manning him by moving across to the off side as he prepared to release, but if that sometimes made his line look more exaggerated, it did not make the calls of wide any less justifiable. Jordan lost his line at a critical time and was wayward enough, in normal circumstances, for his place to be jeopardised as a result. The issue for England is that the potential replacements, Harry Gurney and Steven Finn, have had issues of their own. Finn’s have been well chronicled – the collapse of his action in Australia last winter which meant that he did not play a single Test and left the tour early for remedial work on his action back at Middlesex.Finn’s progress throughout the county summer has been solid, if unspectacular. By mid-July, he was able to discuss it for the first time, telling ESPNcricinfo that he began to over-analyse every aspect of his action and that Saker, who is generally regarded as a tactical rather than a technical coach, was unable to find a solution. At some point in this series, England surely must play Finn. There has been so much emphasis upon stable planning, particularly when the subject turns to the one-day captaincy of Alastair Cook, that it has been overlooked that the build-up to the World Cup offers England not just the chance to plan, but the chance to discover. If there is a limited appetite for discovery when it comes to England’s batsmen, such a policy is essential for Finn. England’s next one-day series is against Sri Lanka in November and December and that is hardly the easiest place for an out-and-out fast bowler to make an impression. To take Finn to Australia – the scene of his technical torment – in January for the tri-series against Australia and India still not road-tested would be a failure of planning and, if his problems recurred, would throw England’s plans into disarray a few weeks before the World Cup. Only by thrusting Finn into the pressure of international cricket can England measure the extent of his recovery. That leaves Harry Gurney, who would add variety to England’s attack by virtue of being a left-armer and who would also be a natural call-up on his home ground at Trent Bridge. Gurney played in England’s Spring ODIs, making his debut against Scotland in Aberdeen, playing five ODIs against Sri Lanka and returning nine wickets at 22.55. He hit his yorkers more reliably, but there is a lot that could go wrong in such an idiosyncratic action. But Gurney’s form has not been short of concerns. He was unimpressive during Nottinghamshire’s Royal London domestic campaign and in his last outing disappeared at eight an over against Warwickshire, a match Nottinghamshire won thanks to one of four recent one-day hundreds for Alex Hales. His net sessions have not made an irresistible case for his recall. It is a tough choice for England. That Jordan has displayed star quality is incontestable. Finn must be given a chance to prove himself. Gurney has logical hopes of a recall in front of his home crowd. Outside the squad, Northants’ allrounder David Willey has not entirely given up hope of making a late push. Which one to recommend? Even now. Saker’s teeth must be beginning to grind.
