New target: Marinakis now wants to sign "superb" player for Forest

Nottingham Forest have made a decent start to life this term with Steve Cooper and Evangelos Marinakis now reportedly eyeing a fresh addition in the January transfer window.

Nottingham Forest's January priorities…

Following their narrow brush with relegation last term, Nottingham Forest have looked every inch the Premier League side in 2023/24 and sit 15th in the table with 13 points from their first 12 matches, seven points above 18th-placed Luton Town, who occupy the first drop zone position.

The Tricky Trees have lost just two of their last six matches in all competitions, but January will be an important month at the City Ground and movement will be expected on both incomings and outgoings as Nottingham Forest try to move further up the league standings.

Fluminense defender Nino is someone who has been linked with a move to the East Midlands-based outfit and it is now claimed by reports in Brazil via Sport Witness that the final details of his proposed move are being ironed out between both parties.

Earlier this month, reports in Spain claimed that Osasuna defender David Garcia is on Nottingham Forest's radar and could crop up as a transfer priority once again in January after previous interest in his services across the summer window.

Scotland international Scott McKenna could make way in that case, with Turkish giants Fenerbache believed to be plotting a surprise swoop for the defender, who would become the first Scottish player to play for the European giants if a deal were to be concluded.

Transfer rumours tend to start generating momentum at this time of year and it now looks as if Nottingham Forest boss Cooper has identified a midfield target who could help to bolster his squad come the New Year.

Habib Diarra wanted by Nottingham Forest

As per Foot Mercato, Nottingham Forest are keen on Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra, who has also attracted interest from Ligue 1 outfit RC Lens. Nevertheless, the outlet claim that Diarra moving on in January is an unlikely outcome, citing that the summer of 2024 may be a more feasible timeline for the 19-year-old to take his next career step with Marinakis and company now on the case.

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper.

Having already featured in defensive midfield, attacking midfield, on both flanks and as a number eight in the engine room this term, Diarra has made nine appearances in Ligue 1, registering a solitary goal and one assist (Diarra statistics – Transfermarkt).

Diarra, who has been labelled "superb" by Football Talent Scout – Jacek Kulig, has obtained an average Sofascore match rating of 6.83/10 in the French top flight in 2023/24, showing a relatively commendable level of consistency given his youthful exuberance.

Undoubtedly, Diarra would be a signing in the mould of a long-term project, demonstrating that Nottingham Forest are keen to look beyond the rat race of whether or not they can guarantee their place in the Premier League every season.

Possible free transfer: Newcastle eyeing offer to sign "extraordinary" star

Newcastle United are reportedly looking to complete the signing of an "extraordinary" renowned midfielder, as they aim to make further reinforcements in the coming transfer windows.

Newcastle transfer news…

Eddie Howe's side drew 2-2 at West Ham on Sunday afternoon, as Mohammed Kudus' late strike deprived them of three valuable Premier League points. While failure to pick up a victory in east London was slightly disappointing, it is still a draw that could be looked back on as a decent result in May, with the Hammers a strong team currently. Newcastle have really turned a corner since a poor start to the season, not least thrashing Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 in the Champions League, and it feels as though they could once again be destined for big things in 2023/24.

One thing that could help the Magpies in their quest for glory is making a number of new signings in the January transfer window, allowing Howe to make his squad stronger, aiding rotation in the process. Should the right players not be available at that point, plenty of summer additions should be expected instead, even though the manager has addressed Newcastle's FFP situation, stating they won't lead to the club spending big, and that appears to have resulted in targeting a potential soon to be free agent.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

Newcastle transfer update; Adrien Rabiot

According to a fresh Newcastle transfer update on Adrien Rabiot, the Magpies are interested in signing the Juventus midfielder at the end of this season, with Rabiot's contract expiring at that point. The Magpies aren't alone in expressing a keenness to snap up the Frenchman, however, with Manchester United also believed to be in the mix. Both clubs are "ready to knock on Rabiot's door again" after showing interest in the past, and they look in a better position to offer him a superior deal than Juve, as they look to keep hold of him.

Rabiot could be a really shrewd signing by Newcastle in the summer of 2024, with the free aspect of it making it far less of a gamble, too. Granted, the 28-year-old may demand high wages, but not having to pay a fee for him could make it an excellent deal. The Juve midfielder has been a top-level player for some time now, winning 38 caps for France and making a combined 412 appearances for his current club and Paris Saint-Germain, while former French striker David Trezeguet has described Rabiot as "extraordinary".

A box-to-box player who can provide both defensive nous and an eye for goal, Rabiot has averaged 2.1 aerial duel wins per game in Serie A so far this season, not to mention enjoying an 89% pass completion rate, highlighting the overall quality that he possesses in his game. He could therefore be great foil for the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, as well as providing Howe with the extra depth he may well crave.

Scotland's win is great for Australia – Ashton Agar

There were many interested observers of the scenes at The Grange on Sunday and a group of them were in London on a day off before their final preparations for the one-day series against England. Scotland’s victory is being seen by the Australians as a timely boost before their new-look team takes the field at The Oval on Wednesday.England remain considerable favourites for the five-match series against an Australia side missing six first-choice players – David Warner, Steven Smith, Mitchell Marsh, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood – but the visitors are chipper after two warm-up wins. Even in this new era of toned-down sledging from Australia, it would be a surprise if England’s stumble in Edinburgh wasn’t given the occasional mention when the two sides meet.”It was a really interesting game yesterday, good for us that England lost that game, great for Scotland as a country, and as a cricketing nation it’s really exciting for them,” Ashton Agar said.”It’s about momentum and having had a couple of practice games and got a couple of wins, it’s great for us. For us it’s good that England didn’t win because you always want to start with a win.”Agar said that Australia’s squad had a “nice refreshed” feel to it and was particularly excited at the prospect of tall quick bowler Billy Stanlake taking on the powerful England batting line-up. Stanlake impressed against Middlesex in his one run-out before the series, troubling batsmen with his bounce and pace.”You have a couple of really good players who aren’t in the mix at the moment, having said that, we do have a really versatile squad, an injection of youth which is always helpful, so there’s a lot of energy and a lot of players who are really believing in themselves at the moment.”You could say maybe [the squad is weakened] slightly without that 150kph Mitchell Starc coming in, but you have another 150kph in Billy Stanlake … if you take out 100 one-day wickets or whatever Starcy has, it will change things a little bit, but it’s a great chance for Billy to show his stuff, bowl 150ks and hopefully rip through them.”On a personal level, Agar is set for a key position in the Australia line-up having established himself as the main spinner ahead of Nathan Lyon at the start of the tour and being entrusted with the No. 7 slot in both warm-up matches. Coach Justin Langer has given a strong indication that Australia will go with an extra bowling option which makes Agar’s batting ability crucial”I think the rise of Big Bash cricket has really helped my batting in white-ball cricket,” he said. “I come in at the end a lot in Big Bash games and try and finish the job. I work very hard on my batting and try and build on that, so to start off with a couple of 20s was pleasing.”The Oval will be just Agar’s fifth ODI since he made his debut against England at Old Trafford in 2015 – although English audiences are more likely to remember him for his 98 on Test debut batting at No. 11 in the 2013 Ashes – and he now feels a more rounded cricketer.”I’m really confident, feel like I’m bowling quite nicely especially with the white ball,” he said. “I have better understanding of the game and a better self belief.”

Karachi set to host Pakistan-West Indies T20Is

Najam Sethi, the PCB chairman, has announced that the matches will be played on April 1, 2 and 3

West Indies are set to become the latest international team to tour Pakistan. Najam Sethi, the PCB chairman, has announced that they will visit the country for a series of three T20Is, all of them to be played in Karachi. *These matches were originally scheduled for April 1, 2 and 4 but the final one has been pulled forward by a day so as not to clash with the death anniversary of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. These will be the first international matches in Karachi since the 2009 attacks on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore brought international cricket in Pakistan to a virtual halt. Pakistan have played nearly all their “home” matches in the UAE since then. There has been a slow trickle of international teams returning to Pakistan since 2015, with Zimbabwe, a World XI, and most recently Sri Lanka making short visits for limited-overs games, but all of them were confined to the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore. Karachi is also set to host the final of the ongoing Pakistan Super League.”I have been working day and night to conclude an agreement with West Indies which I have just finalised an hour ago,” Sethi said. “Good news is that West Indies will play three games, on [April, 1, 2 and 3], but these matches will be played in Karachi. They will not play in Lahore but in Karachi. That is how we intend to put Karachi back on the cricket map once again. The PSL final, and now three more games for Karachi as per routine. Karachi people should welcome this.”Sethi said Reg Dickason, the ICC’s security consultant, would visit Karachi during the PSL final to look at the security arrangements for the series.”Reg DIckason and his men will be here during the PSL final and we have contracted them to oversee the West Indies games as well,” Sethi said. “Their expert will stay back for seven days and conduct the security for West Indies series. This is part of our agreement with the West Indies board. This will be a one-off series, since, as I told you before, it will be a loss-making enterprise. The idea wasn’t to make money; it was to bring cricket back, so this is a step in that direction.”We have a separate agreement with the West Indies in which we are exploring a tri-lateral series including Pakistan, West Indies and one other country, which will be played in the USA over next five years. The details about the venues, dates, financial model will be discussed later but in principle it has decided that three countries will play in the USA.”Sethi had last year announced a five-year plan that involved the West Indies touring Pakistan every year until 2022, but in January walked back on that claim due to the costs involved.*

James Hildreth. Corey Anderson fire Somerset beyond Glamorgan

A fifth-wicket partnership of 97 between James Hildreth and Corey Anderson set the foundations for Somerset as they beat Glamorgan by 30 runs

ECB Reporters Network20-Jul-2018
ScorecardA fifth-wicket partnership of 97 between James Hildreth and Corey Anderson set the foundations for Somerset as they beat Glamorgan by 30 runs in the Vitality Blast clash at Sophia Gardens, and moved above them in the table.Chasing 191 to win, it took just six balls for Glamorgan to lose their first wicket, as legspinner Max Waller trapped Aneurin Donald leg before for 1. White-ball skipper Colin Ingram and Australian overseas Usman Khawaja steadied the ship from 7 for 1 with a series of boundaries in the Powerplay, but Ingram skied to mid-off from Craig Overton to leave the Welsh side 52 for 2 in the fifth over, bringing debutant Australian right-hander Joe Burns to the crease.A series of Khawaja boundaries guided Glamorgan to 66 for 2, the left-hander glancing Somerset captain Lewis Gregory for two fours at the end of the Powerplay. Burns soon went, though, advancing down the track having been deceived by the left-arm spin off Roelof van der Merve, as Steven Davies claimed the stumping.Bowler turned fielder to dismiss Khawaja, who drove off Johann Myburgh as Glamorgan, having lost their fourth wicket on 86, faced the daunting task of chasing down a further 107 runs from the halfway point.A fifth wicket soon fell, as Chris Cooke was caught at long-on by van der Merwe off Waller for 4. Myburgh dropped Carlson at backward point off Jamie Overton, before the batsman pulled a huge six over Craig Overton’s head. His luck ran out, though, when he was caught on the cover boundary by Gregory for 33 to leave Glamorgan in some trouble at 118 for 6.When Graham Wagg was caught at long-off by Tom Abell off van der Merwe in the 17th over, Glamorgan’s hopes of victory were all but over. Craig Meschede, however, launched the biggest six of the night into the grandstand off Jamie Overton in the eighteenth over, before he was run out by keeper Davies for 10. Andrew Salter was caught by van der Merwe off Craig Overton for 8 and the end was in sight. It was Glamorgan, though, who had made the best of the early stages after a delayed start to the match, claiming three Somerset wickets for 45 in the powerplay having put the visitors in. Carlson took two leg-side catches in the deep in successive overs, removing Davies off Michael Hogan in the fifth, and Myburgh off Timm van der Gugten in the sixth, an over which also saw Peter Trego caught behind by Cooke.Abell then hooked behind to Cooke off van der Gugten, the keeper tracking back to claim the catch, leaving the visitors in some trouble at 59 for 4. Hildreth and Anderson came together in the ninth over, looking to get Somerset back on track, and the middle-order pair added 97 in 8.1 overs. Anderson struck sixes off successive Salter overs after the pair had brought up the fifty partnership in the 13th over.Anderson struck a third six, off Meschede, from the final ball of the 15th over. But Glamorgan soon had the big breakthrough, when Anderson holed out at mid-on to Carlson off Hogan for 59, having struck six fours and four sixes. The runs flowed once more, however, as Hildreth reached his half-century from 31 balls before Gregory was dropped on 8 at deep square-leg by Burns as the visitors ended on 190 for 5.

Celtic see £6.9m bid rejected for 25-goal star as club set lofty valuation

Celtic are beginning to circle for key targets and could now be set to be embroiled in a high-profile chase for a prolific goalscorer, according to reports.

Celtic's striker question yet to throw up a definitive answer

Brendan Rodgers has made it crystal clear that Celtic want several options across their forward line after Kyogo Furuhashi’s departure. Meanwhile, Nicolas Kuhn moving to Como has left room for more goals to come into the side over the coming weeks.

Addressing their striker situation, the Irishman admitted Shin Yamada’s arrival from Kawasaki Frontale is just the tip of the iceberg, as he stated: “He’ll have a medical over the next couple of days and we’ll have a look at him. We’ve lost a lot of goals, so we need to replace that. Hopefully, this can be one of a number of players we can bring in that aspect.

“He’s got intensity and workrate. It’s something the scouts have seen. In terms of the club, we will bring in players to develop and players for now. Even though he’s a bit older, he’s probably one that can give us that intensity and pressure.”

Intriguingly, Rodgers has seemed to confirm the suspicion that Celtic are operating two different transfer strategies this window. On one hand, the Bhoys appear like they are trying to get ahead of the curve with ‘club’ signings, while arrivals such as Kieran Tierney come in with more of a personal touch from the manager.

Odsonne Edouard is another reported target that may fall into the latter category, albeit it is hard to envisage the Scottish Premiership champions matching his Premier League-level wages.

With Celtic clearly in the market for another leading light in attack, recent developments may point supporters in the direction of their latest pursuit.

Celtic see bid rejected for Louis Munteanu

According to reports from iAMsport.ro, Celtic have seen an opening bid of £6.9 million turned down for CFR Cluj forward Louis Munteanu, with their owner Ioan Varga said to be holding out for a fee of £15.6 million.

Meanwhile, Ligue 1 clubs Rennes, Lille and Nice are also monitoring his situation at the Dr. Constantin Rădulescu Stadium.

Earning his stripes last term, Munteanu registered 25 goals and three assists in 42 appearances across all competitions, and he kicked off the new campaign with a goal in Europa League qualifying against Paksi FC earlier this month.

Making his presence known, the 23-year-old is a clinical finisher with a track record of delivering at a high standard. However, it remains to be seen whether Celtic will bow to his lofty valuation or whether alternative targets will be pursued.

Chamari Athapaththu also played a key all-round role as Thunder bounced back from their previous defeat to the same opposition

Levy has interviewed him: Spurs could hire “best coach in PL” to replace Frank

Tottenham Hotspur will feel hard done by after salvaging a draw against Newcastle United on Tuesday evening, having come unstuck after Anthony Gordon dispatched a controversially won penalty for the home side.

There’s a case to be made that Rodrigo Bentancur had infringed play in the box, but the tussle was waged between two players – one of whom was the 6 foot 7 Dan Burn – and there’s also a case to be made that Bentancur was pulled to the floor by the Newcastle defender.

Even as Cristian Romero’s brace rescued his side, Thomas Frank will know the pressure valve has not been released, and he still has much to prove if he is to cement his managerial berth in north London.

Frank's struggles at the Spurs helm

Tottenham have been something of a mixed bag in the Premier League this season. Their home performance woes have spilt from last year into the current term, with the defeat to Fulham meaning three have been lost on the bounce in the top flight.

Tactically, Tottenham are not creating enough. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are sidelined, have been since the summer, but this is no excuse for the stunted playmaking quality that has been on show. Spurs’ players are not maximising their own skillsets.

Frank is a more pragmatic manager than Ange Postecoglou before him, but his Brentford side still produced clinical and concise attacking play.

Now, much has been left to be desired in his Lilywhites team, and ENIC Group could be forced into cutting off their new manager and replacing him with a summer target.

Indeed, Daniel Levy (remember him?) interviewed Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, as per TalkSPORT, who confirm that he has his sights set on a move up the ladder, albeit with a preference to see out the season.

Given the depth of Tottenham’s interest, this could be a deal revisited. And anyway, it’s not like the Spanish tactician has done anything to deter suitors this year.

Why Iraola is a better stylistic fit

Iraola is a young manager, but he has taken to the Premier League with ease, inculcating his aggressive, attack-focused football at the Vitality Stadium and recording Bournemouth’s highest-ever points total (56) last year.

He has transformed Bournemouth from a band of hard-batting, relegation-contending troops to an easy-on-the-eye attacking force, so intense and energetic. The fact he boasts a superior points-per-game record to Frank in the Premier League only adds fuel to the argument.

It’s a style of football that feels tailor-made for a club like Spurs. To dare is to do, after all, and one of the biggest criticisms of Frank’s tactics has been a pragmatism and lack of creative ambition.

The Spaniard has even been generously named “the best coach in the Premier League” by journalist James Horncastle for his impact on the south coast, and though the Cherries are struggling for form right now, with four losses from five outings, there’s little question that he has laid out his credentials at the top.

Talented players like Xavi Simons are struggling. Tottenham are in a rut. Could Iraola provide the solution? His ability to adapt – evidenced after a summer exodus – could also play favourably into a north London outfit who have undergone a fair amount of chopping and changing in recent years.

It is not yet time for ENIC chiefs to push for a managerial change, but Frank will know that he will soon be on borrowed time if unable to prove that his tactical vision is slowly taking root at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Should push come to shove, Iraola may well prove the perfect replacement, his self-defined “rock and roll” brand of football aligning with Spurs’ free-flowing identity.

Wolves must rue selling sensational star who is worth £40m more than Cunha

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ stunning 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League was the first time they have done the double over the Red Devils since the 1970s.

It was a win that proves how good this Wolves squad is, and next season they should be aiming for a top-half finish without a shadow of a doubt.

Vitor Pereira has worked miracles at Molineux since taking over towards the end of 2024, and if he is backed in the summer transfer window, he can take the club to the next level.

One burning question is, will Matheus Cunha be in the starting XI for the first Premier League fixture of the 2025/26 season?

Matheus Cunha’s future at Wolves is uncertain

The Brazilian may have enjoyed a wonderful season on the pitch, scoring 16 goals and grabbing four assists, but his behaviour in recent months suggests he could be sold this summer.

Cunha has clashed with supporters on social media following a post he put up on his Instagram. He even confessed that he wishes to leave in order to challenge for trophies, and if a big offer comes in, the forward may depart.

The former Atlético Madrid star only signed a new contract back in February, tying him down for another four years. A £62.5m release clause has been inserted into the deal, so whoever wants to sign him this summer will need to stump up the cash.

While losing him would be a big blow, the club sold a player in the summer of 2022 who is now worth £40m more than the Brazilian and is also starring in the Premier League.

Wolves must regret selling £100m-rated star

While Cunha has been stealing the limelight in Wolverhampton, a player not so far away in Nottingham has also very swiftly become one of the leading Premier League players; Morgan Gibbs-White.

Selling the playmaker for a fee in the region of £42.5m was seen as excellent business by the Old Gold initially. Indeed, he’d registered a total of just three goals and one assist in 88 matches for the club was hardly an impressive return, but the move has backfired spectacularly.

Since moving to Nottingham Forest, the Englishman has racked up 111 appearances for the club, registering 43 goal contributions – 16 goals and 27 assists – in the process.

It is no wonder he has been dubbed “sensational” by certain sections of the media for his displays and according to journalist Graeme Bailey, the attacking midfielder is now being valued at around £100m by Forest amid interest from Manchester City.

This is nearly £40m more than Cunha, and the statistics back up his high valuation. In the top flight this term, he has created eight big chances, averaged 1.6 key passes and succeeded with one dribble per game.

Furthermore, he ranks in the top 11% for goal-creating actions (0.63) and in the top 5% for passes into the final third (4.33) per 90 when compared to his positional peers this season in the top flight.

Wolves perhaps made the correct decision at the time by selling the 25-year-old, but boy, must they be rueing that decision now.
