Stage set for Shakib's farewell Test as Bangladesh announce squad for first Test against South Africa

Khaled Ahmed has been cut from the group that toured India and Pakistan

Mohammad Isam16-Oct-2024The Bangladesh selectors naming Shakib Al Hasan in the Test squad for the first match against South Africa confirms that he will return to the country for the first time since May. Shakib is reportedly landing in Dhaka on Thursday, which allows him three days to prepare for his final Test match.Shakib announced his retirement in Kanpur on September 26, wishing to complete his Test career with at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. But he had expressed concern about his safety if he came to Bangladesh, given the number of Awami League leaders being arrested since August 5, the day their government effectively resigned from power after 15 years. Shakib was a member of parliament from his hometown Magura. He was one of 147 people named in an FIR for an alleged murder during the unrest.Although the BCB said that they couldn’t guarantee Shakib’s security, Bangladesh’s interim government confirmed – a couple of times – that he is unlikely to be arrested. But the sports adviser Asif Mahmud did say that the allrounder would be better off if he were to break his silence about the student protests. Shakib did that last week, when he put up an apology on Facebook.ESPNcricinfo LtdSelector Hannan Sarkar said that Shakib was selected only after the BCB had given them the green light.”Shakib had expressed his desire to play his final Test at home. We also know that this was a government issue and BCB issue. We sought the BCB’s clearance so when they gave us the green signal that Shakib is available for selection, we picked him. We are proud to see our legend retiring from the home of cricket.Shakib is among four spin-bowling options in the squad, alongside Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nayeem Hasan. Almost everyone that were part of the recent tours to Pakistan and India made it to this squad as well, except the fast bowler Khaled Ahmed, who was picked to play in Kanpur but bowled only four overs.Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan opened in all four Tests, while Mahmudul Hasan Joy has become their back-up. Mominul Haque and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto could continue at No. 3 and 4, rather than the other way around since Mominul got a century batting at No 3. Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das and Mehidy round out a long Bangladesh batting order.Taijul is usually picked in home Tests ahead of a third seamer. Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud should be the first choice, although Nahid Rana’s pace could be tempting.Bangladesh host South Africa for two Tests, in Mirpur from October 21 and in Chattogram from October 29. It is the first assignment under their interim coach Phil Simmons, who joined the squad on Wednesday, a day after the BCB removed Chandika Hathurusinghe from the position for disciplinary reasons.Bangladesh are currently seventh on the World Test Championship points table, after a 2-0 win in Pakistan and a 2-0 defeat in India. South Africa are fifth on the WTC standings, having most recently won a two-Test series 1-0 in the West Indies in August.Bangladesh squad for first Test against SANajmul Hossain Shanto (capt), Shadman Islam, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Zakir Hasan, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das, Jaker Ali, Mehidy Hasan, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Nahid Rana

Liam Dawson, Joe Weatherley, James Fuller fifties extend Hampshire's advantage

Kent left battling for a draw with Zak Crawley, Ben Compton at the crease

ECB Reporters Network13-May-2023Kent 95 and 66 for 0 (Crawley 35*, Compton 30*) trail Hampshire 373 (Dawson 84, Weatherley 58, Fuller 51) by 212 runsKent were left battling for a draw after three days of their of the LV= Insurance County Championship match with Hampshire at Canterbury. The hosts are 66 without loss in their second innings, trailing by 212, with Zak Crawley unbeaten on 35 and Ben Compton 30 not out.Earlier, Liam Dawson hit 84, Joe Weatherley 58 and James Fuller 51 as the visitors posted 373 in their first innings.Kent had started well, with Wes Agar taking three early wickets to help reduce Hampshire to 159 for 5, but after riding out a torrid opening session the visitors kicked on after lunch and took a 278-run lead. After day two had been reduced to just 6.1 overs, the weather finally improved on Saturday morning, with Hampshire resuming on 103 for nought.Having been dismissed for just 95 in their first innings, Kent came roaring back into the contest, with Agar striking twice in the third over over of the day.Fletcha Middleton was first to go, edging behind for 48 and handing Jordan Cox his first red-ball dismissal as a wicketkeeper. Agar then produced an absolute jaffa that sent Nick Gubbins’ off-stump cartwheeling. He then had Weatherley lbw, but was denied a fourth victim when Crawley dropped Ben Brown, although the batter failed to cash in, adding just a single before he was lbw to Grant Stewart for 10.A far-from-gruntled James Vince was given lbw to Michael Hogan for 24 and Hampshire endured a spell of 7.4 overs without scoring.Ian Holland took 36 balls to get off the mark, although when he did it was a stylish cut off Joey Evison for four and he and Dawson survived to reach 189 for 5 at lunch. From then on the visitors dominated and as the runs came in torrents the home desperation was summed up when an lbw appeal was turned down and a fan yelled: “Come on you … ” before realising the entire ground could hear him. Thinking better of swearing, he meekly added the word … “umpire,” to widespread laughter.A potentially crucial stand of 94 was ended in emphatic fashion when Evison splayed Holland’s stumps for 41, but by then the momentum was entirely with Hampshire. It was 308 for 6 at tea and Dawson continued to hit out until he holed out to Hamid Qadri and was caught at mid-wicket by Tawanda Muyeye.Kyle Abbott was lbw to Evision for 2 before Fuller tried to sweep a full toss from Qadri and was caught on the boundary by Muyeye. When Keith Barker clubbed Evison to Muyeye for 25 it left Kent with a hazardous 26 overs to survive until stumps.Dawson put down a tough chance to catch Ben Compton off Mohammad Abbas, but the openers batted through until failing light forced Hampshire to bring on their spinners for the final five overs and neither Dawson nor Weatherley was able to break through.

Imad Wasim: 'I don't think there are many aggressive spinners like me in the powerplay'

The Pakistan left-armer talks about his time at the T20 Blast, and his batting ambitions

Interview by Matt Roller07-Oct-2020Pakistan left-arm spinner Imad Wasim played nine Vitality T20 Blast matches for champions Nottinghamshire this season, taking eight wickets at an economy of 7.21. In this interview, he talks about becoming a new-ball bowler, developing a new delivery, and wanting to be recognised as an allrounder. You arrived in England in June ahead of the Test series and won’t go home until October. How have the last few months been for you?
It’s been great. I worked really hard during the Covid lockdown, so it feels like it’s paying off. I have family with me for this part of the trip, . It was tough for three months not having my family around, but it is what it is for everyone, so no complaints. I’m going back home next week to play domestic cricket – I’m missing a couple of games of the National T20 Cup but then will join my team [Northern], so I’m looking forward to playing that. And then the PSL knockouts – it’s going to be a really tough four or five months, but I’m excited to be back in Pakistan. You’ve had a strong season for Nottinghamshire, with Dan Christian using you as a new-ball bowler in the powerplay. Have you enjoyed it?
It’s been a really good season, my second year with Nottinghamshire. Dan is a really good captain. He’s been playing for a long time and he’s got a good head on his shoulders. He’s used me in different conditions and at different times, depending on the situation and the opposition, but it’s been spot on.You have become one of the world’s most experienced T20 spinners over the last five years. How did that role come about?
When I was playing domestic cricket, sometimes I would bowl an over in the powerplay – the fourth or the fifth. But when I became captain of my domestic team, it came to my mind that I should bowl the first over as well. And in first-class cricket, I would sometimes take the second new ball. It started like that and I was getting wickets regularly, so I thought: why shouldn’t I do that with the white ball as well? I started doing it in white-ball cricket and it paid off. In international cricket they gave me the new ball because I’d had a great Pakistan A tour bowling with the new ball [in 2015 against Sri Lanka]. And from there, you become a new-ball specialist just like that.

“I am an allrounder. I’m ranked No. 3 in the world [in ODIs]. I don’t want to be considered a bowler. I just want to become a allrounder”

What are the keys to successfully bowling spin in the powerplay?
With the new ball, you can’t defend. You just have to attack. You try to take wickets early on to put the opposition on the back foot straightaway. If you try to defend, they’ll get away in the powerplay – if not against you then against the other bowlers. So my role is just to go out and attack in the first couple of overs I bowl and to pick up wickets. I don’t worry too much about the runs. The next two overs, you’re looking for defence as well, depending on the situation. But with the new ball, I just try to hit the stumps and leave the rest to the batsmen. If they play a good shot, they play a good shot, but for me, it’s a “you miss, I hit” kind of thing.Even when you don’t take wickets, your economy rate is generally very good. Does that help you create pressure at the other end?
Definitely. Partnerships are the most important thing in cricket – batting or bowling. When you’re out there, your partner has to understand your game as well. Wherever I go, most teams think I’m an aggressive option, so the other bowler might think differently, which is a very good thing. I don’t think there are many aggressive spinners in the powerplay. After the powerplay, yes, there are a lot of aggressive spinners, but in the powerplay, there aren’t a lot around the world, so I’m really happy that teams think I am one of them.Do you think batsmen have started to attack you less, knowing your success in that role, and are instead starting to play you out?
Not really. You make your game plan against any bowler, of course, but the number one thing you should do as a bowler is focus on your strength. Don’t worry about what the opposition will do too much. Just stick to your strength and see how it goes from there. Obviously there will be times when you get smacked, but if you stick to your strength, you’ll be successful 60 or 70 times out of 100, which is a very good ratio in international cricket. My advice: don’t do anything different if something is working for you. For me, that is to take wickets and be aggressive.ESPNcricinfo LtdInside the powerplay, do you think lines and lengths are more important than actually trying to spin the ball?
With the new ball, I try to take the pace off, but don’t try to spin the ball. It’s really hard with the new ball, especially with only two fielders out. I get my basics right. After six overs, I’ll start to spin the ball – and I’m developing a new ball, which hopefully you’ll see next time I play international cricket if I keep working hard on it. I want to learn new balls that make me a different kind of a bowler outside the powerplay. There is more analysis available than ever in T20 cricket in particular. Some players spend hours developing specific plans based on an opponent’s strengths. Are you one of them?
I really don’t care about what’s happening outside of me. Because I’ve played a lot of international cricket, I know what opening batsmen’s strengths and weaknesses are, but I don’t think about that much. I just go out there and bowl. I have my processes, my repetitions, and I don’t worry about the batsmen. If they hit me, they hit me, but I want them to hit me with a good shot rather than me giving them a bad ball. You have to respect good shots, which do happen, but I just try to do one thing with the new ball: hit the stumps. When you were growing up, you would have watched Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis opening the bowling for Pakistan. Did you ever think that would be something you would do?
Never. I never expected it, or even thought about that in my life. Even in franchise cricket – I never expected it. God has given me this. It’s not something spinners usually do.You were stuck down at No. 8 or No. 9 for most of the T20 Blast with Nottinghamshire, and your record with the bat is much better in 50-over cricket than in T20.
I don’t think I’ve got the opportunities I want. I got them in the World Cup. In one-day cricket I’ve had the opportunities and my performances have been not bad. I’m really happy in one-day cricket with where I am, but I want to express myself more. I have more to give my country with the bat. There have been glimpses in world cricket of me doing good things as an allrounder, but in T20, I haven’t got the opportunities like that anywhere in the world. I’m really working hard on my batting. Someday I could win a big game with my batting and then people will start thinking about me as an allrounder in T20 as well as one-day cricket. I’m really hungry to score runs for my country and for franchise teams. So you consider yourself Imad Wasim, Pakistan allrounder, not Imad Wasim, Pakistan bowler?
No, no, no! I am an allrounder. I’m ranked No. 3 in the world [in ODIs]. I don’t want to be considered a bowler. I just want to become a allrounder. I’m working hard and the rest is up to God. Whenever God decides to give me fame as a batsman, just like in bowling, it will happen, .

'I haven't heard any complaints face to face' – Javier Mascherano says door is open after Benjamin Cremsachi reveals frustration with Inter Miami role

The Herons boss says that, ultimately, he's the one that decides when and where players take the pitch

Javier Mascherano has responded to Benjamin Cremaschi's recent remarks about his role at Inter Miami, with the Herons boss saying his door is open if the midfielder wants to discuss his circumstances.

Speaking to reporters this week, the 20-year-old midfielder said he was "frustrated" with his role and his lack of minutes recently.

"I go to the games and I have no idea where I'm going to play," the 20-year-old said.

When asked about Cremaschi's criticism following Saturday's 3-1 win over the LA Galaxy, Mascherano reflected on his own career while suggesting Creamschi should speak to him directly if he has concerns.

“I understand he likes to play as a central midfielder,” Mascherano said. "I also liked to play as a central midfielder, but when I went to Barcelona, I had to play as a centerback because otherwise I had no chance to play.

“The door to my office is always open for anyone who may be mad or doesn’t want to play a certain position to come tell me. I haven’t heard any complaints face to face. This is professional football. I decide where I think each player can give me their best.”

Cremaschi has been a regular for Miami this season, starting 15 times, but he has been used in a variety of roles, particularly recently. A center midfielder by trade, Cremaschi has played as a No. 8, No. 10, No. 6 and even as a wingback at times this season.

On Saturday, Cremaschi started as a midfielder, playing 77 minutes before Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez won it with a pair of late goals for Miami.

With the win over the Galaxy, Inter Miami now find themselves sitting fifth in the Eastern Conference. The focus this week, though, is on the Leagues Cup, as they'll host Tigres in the quarterfinal on Wednesday.

When Thala Dhoni's Chennai chanted 'Pant! Pant! Pant!'

Pant walked off to rousing applause in his predecessor’s territory as he racked up his maiden ODI fifty

I’ve learnt that there is nothing called a ‘natural game’ – Pant

Chennai is MS Dhoni’s territory. You must have seen reception when Dhoni merely rocked up for training in the lead-up to IPL 2019. Dhoni isn’t here with India’s ODI squad in the city – well, he hasn’t been available since the 50-over World Cup earlier this year – but he’s everywhere in Chennai. There are posters and images of him – mostly in Chennai Super Kings’ yellow – on metro rails and airports among other places. He even has a street named after him in the city.On Sunday there wasn’t enough buzz in Chennai in the build-up to the ODI series opener against West Indies – possibly due to the absence of Dhoni in the side. This was Chennai’s first international in more than a year and first ODI in more than two years, but reports had emerged by the start of the game that some of the tickets were still unsold.Plus, rain had lashed Chennai in the past couple of days, wiping out both sides’ practice sessions on the eve of the match. The crowd began building up later in the afternoon, but West Indies’ left-arm seamer Sheldon Cottrell hushed them by nipping out both Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in the seventh over. Both batsmen were tricked by cutters as India slipped to 25 for 2. Rohit Sharma then holed out for 36 in the 19th over. Chennai is used to seeing Dhoni pulling off rescue acts not just in yellow but also in India colours. Remember, India v Pakistan in 2012 or more recently India v Australia in 2017?No Dhoni? No problem for India, at least on Sunday. Dhoni’s successor Rishabh Pant stepped up on a familiar, sluggish Chepauk pitch and raised the crowd from its stupor. He even unveiled his version of the helicopter shot and had the Chennai crowd chanting: “Pant! Pant! Pant!”.His maiden ODI half-century – 71 off 69 balls – masked India’s rare top-order wobble and hoisted them up to 288 for 8.

When Pant had joined Shreyas Iyer, India were 80 for 3 and the pitch was throwing up some tricks. Some balls skidded from a length, while others stopped from a similar length. Pant was wary of the challenge and began by playing out five successive dots.Alzarri Joseph hit speeds north of 140kph and found extra bounce, but Pant smartly rode it and worked him square – or behind square on the leg side – to repair the innings along with Iyer. Pant then ventured to drive on the up, but the slowness of the pitch didn’t allow him to get the ball away. So, he wound up splicing Joseph much straighter as opposed to hitting it squarer on the off side.At the other end, allrounder Keemo Paul found some movement with his cutters and rollers, but Pant stood outside the crease to counter this threat.Having come to grips with the pitch, Pant knuckled down against the seamers and got to 12 off 22 balls. Offspinning allrounder Roston Chase then dropped a short offbreak that broke further away from Pant, but the 22-year old adjusted to it, delayed his pull, and swatted the ball away to the midwicket boundary.Pant opted to take more risks against Chase, including a slog-swept six against the turn over midwicket. All up, Pant took 18 off 13 balls from Chase. He was more circumspect against Paul’s variations, but when he sprayed one down the leg side in the 31st over, Pant helicoptered it Dhoni-style to the long-leg boundary and thrilled the crowd.West Indies captain Kieron Pollard then recalled Cottrell in search of a breakthough, but Pant saw him off too and reached his fifty off 49 balls. He celebrated the landmark by dashing down the track and thumping Chase flat over his head for four.”Pant is the kind of batsman who can change the momentum of the game and that’s what he did today,” Iyer told after India’s innings. “I just told him [Pant] to try and hit straight because you’ll get to know the wicket and know how you can play.”Pant was then reprieved by Cottrell on 56 and he managed to add only 15 to his tally before being dismissed by Pollard’s offcutter. However, his contribution and restraint in a 114-run fourth-wicket stand had armed India with a strong total on an ageing track. In recent months, Pant has come under immense pressure – both in front of and behind the stumps. When the wicketkeeper-batsman has missed chances, spectators have chanted Dhoni’s name to wind him up.On Sunday evening, however, Pant walked off to rousing applause and more chants of “Pant! Pant! Pant!” in territory.

The five days that lifted Prithvi Shaw out of his rut

After a poor IPL in 2020 and being dropped in Australia and for the England series, the Delhi Capitals opener went back to the drawing board with Pravin Amre

Nagraj Gollapudi15-Apr-2021Sunil Gavaskar was impressed with a shot Prithvi Shaw played during his explosive 72 last weekend, which got the Delhi Capitals off to a winning start in the 2021 IPL. It was a simple steer off Shardul Thakur, the Chennai Super Kings fast bowler, which went between the two fielders at short third man and backward point. “If he can control the bat speed like he did [on] this particular boundary, well, the sky is the limit,” Gavaskar said.Only last December, Gavaskar had been critical of 21-year-old Shaw, who had failed in both innings of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and spent the rest of the series on the bench. “You can see he is pushing at deliveries,” Gavaskar said, going over Shaw’s dismissals leading up to and including that Adelaide Test for Channel 7 at the time. “He is playing with hard hands. Have a look where his bat ends up: there is a such a big gap between bat and pad.”The trick is to try and play as close to the pads as possible, which means your bat speed has to be minimal, minimal, at the start of the innings.”Related

Shaw reveals he 'broke down' after being dropped in Australia

Stats – Shaw and Padikkal create new benchmarks

Before he got to Australia, Shaw had been dropped by the Capitals late in the second half of the last IPL after averaging under 18 over 13 games. Earlier this month, Ricky Ponting, the Capitals head coach, revealed Shaw did not want to train in the nets last season. “When he’s not scoring runs, he won’t bat [in the nets],” Ponting said.Shaw was dropped for the home series against England. Shubman Gill, who replaced him in Australia, had firmed up his position as Rohit Sharma’s opening partner for India in Tests. Shaw’s short Test career had already hit its first snag. He faced questions over not just his technique but also about his temperament and his physical fitness. In the first few weeks of March, Shaw made headlines again – for quite different reasons. Captaining Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he shattered multiple records to help the domestic giants win the title. He became the first batsman in the tournament’s history to score over 800 runs in a season. Now he seems to have brought that form into the IPL.

****

Pravin Amre has known Shaw since he was as tall as a bat.

The former Mumbai and India batsman was instrumental in Shaw getting a corporate scholarship from Air India, with whom Amre has been employed for more than two decades. When he was 13, Shaw scored a record 546 in a Mumbai schools cricket game, which earned him a hand-written letter from Gavaskar advising him to be “run-hungry always” and saying that a “century is just the first course”.Amre watched Shaw’s struggles last IPL as part of a rival franchise, the Mumbai Indians, with whom he was working as a talent scout at the time, having given up his assistant coach role at the Delhi Capitals to do so. When the Capitals came knocking again after the last season, offering Amre the role of deputy to Ponting, he joined them again. The franchise wanted Amre to work closely with their key players during the off season to ensure they were ready both technically and mentally for the IPL. It was the sort of thing Amre did last year with the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan for the Mumbai Indians.Pravin Amre: “I told [Shaw], if you can’t help yourself, then even God cannot help you” (file photo)•Santosh Harhare/Hindustan Times/Getty ImagesShaw turned out to be Amre’s first project back at the Capitals. “I understand what a player goes through when he is dropped,” Amre says. “We just wanted to let him know that we [Capitals] are here. We also wanted to know from him what he wants.” The two met in February in Mumbai and chalked out a plan for a five-day training course before Shaw left to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. After their chat, Shaw took a trip to Shirdi, a famous temple in Maharashtra, about 250km north-east of Mumbai, before getting down to brass tacks.”He agreed that he had to work on his batting,” Amre says. “He wanted to improve. I showed him the mirror. I told him: Where are you right now? You have been dropped from the Test team. You did not even have a par performance last IPL. You have just experienced failure, so how are you going to bounce back? The one thing that is in your [favour] is you are 21 years old.”Amre told Shaw plainly that this IPL was a make-or-break season for him, especially keeping the mega auction in 2022 in mind. “I told him simply that his talent will not be considered by the franchises, only his performance will help him to survive.”I told him, you are going to seek blessings [to Shirdi], but if you can’t help yourself, then even God cannot help you. You have to work hard on your game and the franchise will help you.” Amre also assured Shaw that he was not looking to temper the natural aggression that is the backbone of his batting.Shaw gets bowled in the Adelaide Test last year. Sunil Gavaskar and others noted how he was leaving a large space between bat and pad at the time•Getty ImagesFor the training sessions Amre picked the familiar surroundings of Shivaji Park, among the grounds in Mumbai where Shaw cut his teeth during his time in schools and age-group cricket. The first day Amre recorded Shaw’s batting from various angles.”There are a few things that are part of the batsman’s set-up when he is in form,” Amre says. “One is playing with a full bat face. And when you are not, the bat face becomes closed. He was convinced he was not playing with the full face, so we decided to focus on doing drills that would help him regain that.”Amre had closely studied Shaw’s batting in the 2020 season. “First thing I convinced him about was, there were very few deliveries [he faced] that were actually wicket-taking last IPL. There was an error in judgement. There was an error in shot execution. There was an error in feet position. Or there was an error in shot selection.”Hand position and footwork are the basics of batting set-up. Both influence the impact point. He was getting bowled or caught behind mostly due to that.”In the last IPL, Shaw was caught behind and caught in the field four times apiece, bowled and caught and bowled twice each, and stumped once. “I showed how he could have been in a better position at times,” Amre says, “what should be the impact point to avoid the caught-behind and how he could move his feet.”ESPNcricinfo LtdShaw’s high backlift had come into focus as his failures multiplied, but Amre pointed out that the problem was in the way the bat was coming down – there was a bit of a jerk as it descended. Amre worked with Shaw to help him bring the bat down like a golfer who hits the driver with a high backlift but in one smooth action. Back in his room, Shaw shadow-practised it, watching himself in the mirror as he did.”The bat-swing is always behind the batsman’s eyes,” Amre says. “He is looking at the bowler. He does not understand how the bat is coming down.”Unknowingly, [Shaw’s] bat-swing was coming down at an angle. So I brought that bat-swing slightly closer to his body, more straight. The backlift coming from the [direction of gully] was not the issue, it was how it was coming down.”The other issue was, Shaw was not moving his feet adequately, which meant there was no weight transfer. “While playing, his base was not stable,” Amre says. “I worked out drills where he started to move his feet quickly.”As the training proceeded, Shaw began to analyse his hand position, how close the bat was coming to his body, and whether he was moving his feet into the trigger position when the bowler was ready to deliver. On the final day of the five, Shaw hit his favourite stroke, the pull, with confidence. That was the shot that had let him down more than once last IPL. Given it is his release shot, his inability to play the pull confidently had bothered him. “For that shot you need two things: a fluent bat-swing and footwork,” Amre says. It’s not the backlift, silly: Amre says it was more about how Shaw’s bat came down in its swing rather than from where•Delhi CapitalsFrom the mental point of view, Amre set Shaw the challenge to bat a certain amount of time in each innings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. “I told him: show me you can play 100 deliveries. I know he can easily blast a century. Psychologically he was down because everyone was pointing out he was not scoring runs. So I told him, I am not looking for runs. But if you do these things then runs are a by-product.”

****

A day after the win against the Super Kings, Amre was content – not least that the likes of Gavaskar were talking about the improvements in Shaw’s technique. Amre says a few strokes highlighted the renewed confidence with which Shaw was batting. “Hitting [Ravindra] Jadeja over long-on [for a six] rather than going over midwicket. Then the shape he held in the punch past extra cover, where he showed a high elbow. That showed he was showing the full bat face. In the past he would hit it with a bit more of the inside of the bat.”According to Amre the steer that Gavaskar praised owed to Shaw’s improved footwork. “His initial movement was good, his impact point was closer to the ball and that is why he could guide the ball.”In the days preceding the match, Shaw and Amre had worked out a counter to the plan the Super Kings’ strike bowler Deepak Chahar usually deployed. Chahar would move the ball away from the off stump, and Shaw would attempt to fetch it without moving his feet. “Check the first four he hit [against Chahar, second ball of the Capitals’ innings],” Amre says. “He moved inside the line and flicked it for four. In the past, because he was not in position, he would play a similar ball towards the off side.”

ESPNcricinfo LtdIn a video interview a few weeks ago, Shaw revealed he was unable to understand why various “small mistakes” had crept into his game in the second half of the last IPL. And they were small things, he pointed out, not his whole technique. He started asking questions of himself. “I get dropped [in Australia] and going back to the hotel, looking into the mirror: ‘What has happened to you? There is something wrong with your batting. This is not you, this is not how you play. You have played a lot of international bowlers,'” Shaw said to his interviewer, Tuhin Mishra, the co-founder of Baseline Ventures, his management agency.Shaw said he felt worthless with respect to his contributions on the Australia tour, where the likes of Gill and Rishabh Pant had helped India win the series. “Mentally I was that much distracted. I couldn’t do much over there.”Mishra asked how Shaw coped with being dropped for the England series. “It is better to see everything right now [including hard times] in this young age,” Shaw replied with a laugh. In a chat with the Capitals’ media after the win against the Super Kings, Shaw was asked to rate his own performance on a scale of ten. “I should have finished the job, so I will give myself two marks less, so eight out of ten.”

CINCO LANCES QJE MARCARAM A PARTIDA

> !DUPLA SERTANEJA AFINADA! Renato abriu o placar logo no início do segundo tempo.

E A ETAPA FINAL?

Somente Adson perdeu, parando no goleiro Mateus Pasinato.

Arsenal could see £59m bid accepted for "monster" upgrade on Sesko

da mrbet: While the dream for many Arsenal fans this summer will be to see Alexander Isak arrive in a big-money deal, the fact of the matter is that he feels pretty untouchable.

da realsbet: A reported £150m asking price has been slapped on his head and despite Mikel Arteta’s need to strengthen in attack, it’s unlikely you’ll see the Gunners fork out that amount of money, particularly considering they need fresh faces in other areas of the pitch too.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their first goal

It perhaps explains why they’re currently working on a deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres, then. Reports in recent days suggest that they are in talks and an agreement may well be close.

But, if that move doesn’t come to fruition, attention could be turned to Benjamin Sesko and one other alternative.

Arsenal could sign £59m Sesko upgrade

Last summer, it looked as though Arsenal were going to sign Slovenian centre-forward, Sesko.

The striker had a release clause at RB Leipzig and despite interest from the north Londoners, he penned a new contract in Germany and decided to stay another year.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskocelebrates

Well, a year on, Arsenal are still interested in the 21-year-old, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein noting earlier in the week that they have done a lot of work to potentially sign the player.

The player still has a release clause with certain conditions, meaning it could see Arsenal pay in the region of £67m.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

If they are seeking a cheaper alternative, then they need to look no further than Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy.

England’s elite clubs have all been presented with the opportunity to sign the striker this summer as according to German publication, BILD, the player has a release clause of £59m, which can only be triggered by a certain set of teams.

Those clubs are Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Barcelona.

It’s a strange situation but due to the nature of the release clause, if any of the sides above submitted a bid of £59m, Dortmund would have no choice but to accept.

How Guirassy compares to Sesko

Sesko, described as “the new Haaland” by talent scout Jacek Kulig is clearly one of the most promising and exciting young strikers in the game right now.

In the Bundesliga, he’s scored 13 goals in 33 matches and registered a further eight across other competitions. It’s a solid tally considering his age, but Arsenal want to win now. Thus, signing Guirassy for a cheaper fee may well be the answer.

After all, when it comes to finding the net, he’s certainly more prolific. Aptly described as a “goal monster” by journalist Michael Adjei, also playing in Germany’s top-flight, Guirassy scored 21 in 30 league outings this season.

In all competitions, the 29-year-old has found the net on 34 occasions in 45 fixtures. While he was a menace domestically, it was in the Champions League where he racked up some astonishing numbers.

Guirassy most notably scored a hat-trick in the quarter-finals against Barcelona, which were three of 13 goals he scored in 14 European ties this season. He’s a man for the big occasion and being in his prime, he’s ready to help Arsenal now. Unlike Sesko, he’s not a project striker.

So, where else does he beat the Slovenian? We’ve crunched the numbers.

Analysing certain metrics, it’s no surprise to see that Guirassy is more dangerous in front of the goal considering he takes more shots. He’s also involved in the build-up play, registering more key passes every 90 minutes.

Sesko is certainly the more progressive and quicker of the two, certainly judging by the number of take-ons he achieves, but what’s crucial for the way Arteta uses his centre-forwards is that Guirassy trumps the Leipzig sensation for aerial duels won.

We’ve got two different profiles here, but at the end of the day, goals win you games of football and that’s what the Gunners have missed most this season.

The Dortmund star may well be 29 but he’s in his prime, he’s in the form of his life, and for £59m, you won’t find many better options.
