A quiet first 45 minutes saw the two sides head into the halftime break scoreless, with the tempo being both slow and aggravating for each team. Neither looked content with their performance, with heads hanging low as they headed down the tunnel at the break. However, at the half, something ticked for the Rossoneri as they came out with fire in their eyes over the final 45 minutes.

Pulisic opened the scoring in the 59th minute off a brilliant team play with Ismael Bennacer and Tijani Reijnders. The Algerian international split the Sassuolo defense with a decisive ball and the USMNT star drew goalkeeper Andrea Consigli off his line, tucking the ball into the far corner of the net. It ended up being the lone goal in the contest, but it was all the Rossoneri needed to take home three points on the day.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Pulisic now has six goals and four assists across the Serie A campaign, and is the first American to ever net that many in a Serie A season. He's become a written-in name for every team sheet under boss Stefano Pioli, and he's rewarded the manager time and time again with brilliant performances. Saturday saw him light up the Sassuolo defense across the final 45 minutes, netting the winner of course, but applying pressure the entire time as well. A proper Man of the Match performance, the USMNT star was brilliant yet again for Milan.

GettyUSMNT IMPACT

It's brilliant news for Gregg Berhalter's side, as Pulisic continues his red-hot form in Italy. He's been absolutely fantastic of late, showing the top-level talent he did during his initial seasons at Chelsea. If he can stay healthy going into this Spring's Nations League semifinals and this summer's Copa America, he instantly gives them an upper hand against top-tier competition.

As for Musah, it's a minor knock that held him out of the contest. It should be no worry for Berhalter or the USMNT, with an expected return this coming week.

GOAL'S RATINGS

Christian Pulisic (8/10): It was a slow first half for the winger, but that was the case for the entire Rossoneri squad. He came alive during the final 45 minutes, putting on an attacking clinic, with Milan riding his performance.

Sunderland: Mowbray has "edge" in signing "amazing" star

Sunderland 'have an edge' over rivals in their pursuit of Manchester United youngster Amad Diallo due to his familiarity with surroundings at the Stadium of Light, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Is Amad Diallo going back to Sunderland?

Diallo spent last term on loan at Sunderland and became a fan favourite at the Black Cats due to his consistent displays, which saw him yield 14 goals and four assists in 42 appearances across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

The Ivory Coast international, who was hailed as an "amazing player" last season, has attracted interest from several clubs this summer, including Leicester City, Burnley and Sheffield United, according to The Daily Mail.

Nevertheless, Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag won't make a decision on any of his fringe stars until he has a chance to take a closer look at them on the Red Devils' pre-season tour of the United States.

Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray hasn't hidden his desire to see the wide man return to the Stadium of Light in 2023/24 despite acknowledging that any potential deal would be unlikely, as per Chronicle Live, stating at the end of last season: "I think the reality is that he won't be coming here unless they [Manchester United] think he is going to be one helluva player and he needs another year out playing, and he enjoys it at Sunderland so he can stay there. That would be the ideal scenario for us – pretty unlikely, I would suggest, but you never know."

Nevertheless, the Black Cats will also face competition from Sky Bet Championship rivals Leeds United and Southampton if they are to try and bring Diallo back to the North East.

As per The Athletic, Diallo joined Manchester United from Serie A side Atalanta in a money-spinning deal worth in the region of £37 million.

Speaking to Football FanCast, transfer insider Jones hinted that Sunderland could carry an 'edge' over rivals who are keen on Diallo due to his time spent at the club previously.

Jones stated: "I think Sunderland are going to have an edge here because the player is familiar with their environment and fits into the style. I can't see him going to Leeds, Leicester as well. I wonder about with Diallo, I feel like that's got good potential for him, but certainly, Sunderland should be looking down that path."

What other business could Sunderland look to do this window?

According to Fotboll Sthlm via The Sunderland Echo, Sunderland have taken Djurgardens youngster Gideon Granstrom on trial and offered him the chance to win a deal at the Stadium of Light, with Norwich City also keen to assess his capabilities.

Granstrom's father spoke about their interest to the Swedish outlet, stating: "He went there earlier this week and is doing his first training session today. He stays about ten days in total. They will be on this tour for a week, starting in Norwich, then finishing with three days in Sunderland."

Sunderland could also raid Manchester United for a second time amid their interest in Nathan Bishop; however, they saw a loan bid rejected for his services earlier in the window, as per The Athletic.

Leeds United forward Sonny Perkins is a loan target for the Black Cats, who have thrown their hat into the ring despite competition from Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers, according to a report from TEAMtalk.

Wood fears the chop as competition for places hots up

England look set to name an unchanged team for the second Test, but the sight of Chris Woakes and Jake Ball back in training suggested selection could become highly competitive before the end of the summer

Wood keen to avoid second Test slip-up

England look set to name an unchanged team for the second Test, but the sight of Chris Woakes and Jake Ball back in training suggested selection could become highly competitive before the end of the summer.Woakes and Ball, who have so far missed out on selection in the series against South Africa due to injury, both enjoyed a gentle bowl at Trent Bridge as England prepared for the second Test that begins on Friday. While neither are ready to return just yet, Mark Wood – who returned to the side for the first Test at Lord’s – admitted he might not have made the side had they been fit, and accepted that the battle for places could become intense when all are available.Wood’s hope is that he can, for the first time in his career, play three Tests in succession in the same series. While he has played four successive Tests, he has only managed to do when there has been a gap of several weeks between series. And he admits that, so concerned was he by the injuries he has suffered in the past, that he thought his Test career might be over.”It’s no secret that I thought Test cricket was probably gone at one stage,” Wood said. “One wicket at Lord’s might not sound good but I was pleased with how I bowled and it was a proud moment to come back in the Test arena.”We have bowlers waiting in the wings. Probably if they were fit, I wouldn’t have played. Chris Woakes had a great year and it will be interesting to see what happens when he’s back playing.”The challenge becomes to prove to you guys, to my team-mates and the coaches that I can play three in a row. I have to keep these guys out of the team and that’s the challenge.”I feel good, which is rare for me. It’s surreal to back games up and not worry but I’m delighted.”Wood, at least, has happy memories of Trent Bridge. Not only did he claim the Ashes-clinching wicket of Nathan Lyon here in 2015 – Lyon tried to leave one but dragged it on to his stumps – but he has claimed 15 wickets in three first-class matches there for Durham, including one of his six five-wicket hauls (5 for 78 in 2012) and one of his two half-centuries (58 not out in 2013). Oddly, his three games there were his first three Championship matches.”Yes, it’s nice to be back here,” he said. “When you’re struggling, you visualise times when you’ve done well. This is a ground where I’ve always done well here, even for Durham. The night before, if I’m selected, I’ll be thinking about that and visualising running in.”Wood was delighted to contribute with the bat at Lord’s, too. He added 45 for the ninth wicket with Jonny Bairstow in a low-scoring second innings and said he was once described as “the best No. 10 since Pele”.”I slogged it at Lord’s, but that was the way to go on that wicket,” he said. “When I first got into the Durham team I batted at No. 10 and Jon Lewis, the coach at the time, said I was the best No10 since Pele. I’ll take that.”There is a slightly unusual look to the pitch to be used in the second Test. While it is a fresh surface – the same surface that was used for the 2015 Ashes Test in which Australia were bowled out for 60 on the first morning – it has an oddly mottled look, as if it has been used recently. Local knowledge suggests there will be movement and decent carry for the seamers.Woakes and Ball were not the only familiar faces on view on Wednesday. Paul Franks and Ant Botha, Nottinghamshire’s assistant coaches, were also involved – the England camp like to provide opportunities for county coaches to learn from their methods and provide some fresh views as appropriate – while Nottinghamshire’s young batch of seamers (notably the distinctly brisk Jack Blatherwick and Matt Milnes) impressed in the nets.Chris Read spent a while working with fellow keeper Jonny Bairstow and Matt Carter, the 21-year-old offspinner who claimed 7 for 56 on first-class debut in 2015, also bowled in the nets. Kevin Sharp was also part of the coaching team.Jimmy Anderson did not bowl but the England camp insist he is fine and had simply elected to rest. With 53 wickets in eight Tests at an average of 19.24 at the ground, he will have liked the look of this surface.

Leeds Eyeing Summer Reunion With 29-Year-Old

Leeds United are interested in signing former Thorp Arch youngster Charlie Taylor in the summer transfer window, according to an update from reliable journalist Phil Hay.

When was Charlie Taylor at Leeds?

The Whites are looking to turn their fortunes around after the disappointment of being relegated from the Premier League back in May, with the arrival of Daniel Farke as manager hopefully a positive step in the right direction, in thay respect.

The new boss also needs to be backed in the transfer market for their improvements to continue, though – hopefully, 49ers Enterprises' takeover of the club will be completed in the near future, generating more money – with additions required all over the pitch.

One player who could be a contender to come in is Taylor, who spent many years at Elland Road early on in his career, firstly in the youth team and then making the grade in the senior setup. The 29-year-old made 104 appearances for Leeds in total, scoring three goals and registering 13 assists in that time, before joining Burnley in 2017.

Taylor remains with the Clarets currently, but with his current contract at Turf Moor expiring next year, they may feel that now is the best time to sell him, instead of losing him for free in 2024.

With Junior Firpo moving on after a really poor spell as a Whites player, a new left-back will be required, and it looks as though the former Leeds man is a candidate to come in.

Are Leeds signing Charlie Taylor?

According to The Athletic's Hay, the Whites could look to bring Taylor back to the club this summer, as he provided a fresh update on potential transfer targets in that area of the pitch:

"Defensively, Leeds require a left-back having decided to listen to enquiries for Junior Firpo. They have been repeatedly linked with Ryan Manning, who is on a free transfer after parting company with Swansea City, and they are pondering bidding for Burnley’s Charlie Taylor, the defender who came through the academy at Elland Road."

Taylor could be a really shrewd investment by Leeds this summer, with the Englishman knowing the club inside out, and therefore unlikely to take time to settle in as Farke's first signing.

At 29, he is now an experienced head who has become accustomed to life in the Championship, appearing 126 times in the competition down the years, and he could bring a mix of defensive stability and attacking nous, with the latter highlighted by his aforementioned assist tally for Leeds.

He also impressed Burnley manager Vincent Kompany in a centre-back role last season, with his boss saying: "If he has never played there, I can’t say why. But he looked like a centre half. I have been in the position for a few years of my life, and I saw a centre half.”

That level of versatility could be an added bonus for Farke moving forward, giving him more options in his squad, so it is a move that makes a lot of sense, especially as the Clarets could be willing to sell for a cut-price amount, given Taylor's contract situation.

West Ham: Rice money could be spent on superstar playmaker

West Ham United are "interested" in James Maddison and would "enter the discussion" if a deal is agreed for Declan Rice, claims transfer insider Dean Jones.

West Ham United transfer news – what's the latest on James Maddison?

Declan Rice's departure from West Ham has already become the summer's biggest transfer story, with Arsenal and Manchester City seeing their £90m bids rejected by the Irons over the last seven days.

While David Moyes and Co. will be smiling at the thought of a possible £100m bid for their star, they will want the deal to be concluded as quickly as possible as they have their own business to attend to over the summer, business that will heavily rely upon the sale of their club captain.

The names consistently linked with the East London side over the last few weeks have been similar in profile, hard-working, defensively solid midfielders, names like Joao Palhinha, James Ward-Prowse and Amadou Onana, to name but a few.

However, one name linked to the club could have Hammers everywhere very excited, Maddison.

Despite their relegation to the Championship last season, Leicester City have set the price tag for their prized asset at £60m, per the Telegraph.

james-maddison-newcastle-united

West Ham will have to compete with the likes of Newcastle United, who have the player 'at the top' of their summer wishlist and Tottenham Hotspur, who are also keen on the player.

However, with the money from Rice soon to be burning a hole in their pockets, maybe they snatch the player from under the opposition's noses.

What has transfer insider Dean Jones said about James Maddison to West Ham United?

Jones has highlighted that while the Hammers are certainly interested in the services of the England international, they must conclude their business regarding Rice before splashing the cash on a player like him.

Writing for GIVEMESPORT, he said: "West Ham United are another club interested in Maddison and while they are certainly outsiders for now, they would enter the discussions if possible after a Declan Rice exit is sorted."

Would James Maddison be a good deal for West Ham United?

Although, the Hammers' chances of even getting a sniff of signing him look very slim as he's supposedly getting closer and closer to joining Tottenham Hotspur.

While the most logical replacement for a player such as Rice would probably be a more defensively-minded midfielder than Maddison, the Hammers massively struggled to create chances last season, and so should they have the opportunity to tackle that deficiency with the capture of the ex-Norwich City gem, they should.

According to FBref, who compare players in a similar position across Europe's top five leagues, Maddison sits in the top 1% for non-penalty goals, assists, expected non-penalty goals and assists, shot-creating actions, all per 90

james-maddison-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-gossip-heung-min-son-postecoglou

He also had a great personal season last year, despite playing for an incredibly dysfunctional Foxes side. According to WhoScored, the 5 foot 9 dynamo managed a genuinely impressive average match rating of 7.24 across his 30 Premier League appearances.

It's unsurprising then that his former Brendon Rodgers hailed the player as "one of the best in the Premier League" last season.

The biggest hurdle for the East London club in their pursuit of Maddison isn't the fee of £60m, it's the competition they'll face to secure his signature, but if Moyes can work his magic and convince him that joining his project at the London Stadium is a good idea, the club will look much, much better for it.

Just like Beckham! Declan Rice reveals how former Man Utd midfielder inspired long-range goal for Arsenal against Chelsea

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The England star says he had legendary midfielder Beckham's famous goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon on his mind after he saw the recent Netflix documentary on him.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

"Everyone’s been talking about this Beckham documentary, and I watched it for the first time last night," Rice said to club media. "The first couple of clips are the game against Wimbledon where he scored from the halfway line and I took a lot of belief from that.

"I was just thinking that it was bizarre that I watched it last night, and then obviously today taking that shot first time and scoring. It was a special goal to kickstart our comeback, you’ve got to keep shooting – if you shoot, you score!

"In a player’s mind, you get a split second to make a decision. It’s the quickest thing that you have to do; you've got to think whether you pass the ball, Leo was free in front of me, or you go for goal yourself. I’ve just watched it back, it was a great finish so I was happy with that."

Broom, Ronchi recalled for Bangladesh ODIs

New Zealand have opted for experience in the ODIs against Bangladesh, recalling Neil Broom and Luke Ronchi, with the former back after a long hiatus

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Dec-2016Batsman Neil Broom, who last played an ODI in March 2010, has been recalled to the New Zealand squad for the upcoming three-match series against Bangladesh, which starts from December 26.Wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi was also recalled in place of BJ Watling, who was excluded from the side. Two other players who were part of the squad for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, batsman Henry Nicholls and legspinner Todd Astle, were also left out.

In: Neil Broom, Luke Ronchi
Out: BJ Watling, Todd Astle, Henry Nicholls

Broom had signed a two-year contract with Derbyshire in 2015, but chose to forego the second year to give himself another chance with New Zealand. The right-hand batsman is expected to slot in at No. 4 in place of Ross Taylor, who was ruled out after recently undergoing surgery on his left eye.”I appreciate everything Derbyshire have done for me and have really enjoyed my time with the club,” Broom said. “It was a tough call at the time. I had signed with Derbyshire for two years and I would’ve liked to see out the contract, but to get an international recall just outweighs it, so it was a pretty easy decision.”Broom played 22 ODIs between January 2009 and March 2010, scoring 333 runs at an average of 17.22. He has also played 10 T20Is, with the last one against Sri Lanka in November 2013.”When I first came in, I was overawed by everything and just really really wanted to do well and I put too much pressure on myself, so this time I’m not going to do that,” Broom said. “I tell myself this might be my last game every time I go out there. It’s probably something they tell you not to do, but you’ve got to enjoy every moment of it and try and have a couple of good years with the team.”Broom is among the top run-getters in the 2016-17 Plunket Shield first-class tournament, having scored 354 runs in seven innings at an average of 59. In 2015-16, he topped the run charts in the List A competition, the Ford Trophy, scoring 508 runs in nine matches with three centuries and two fifties.Ronchi, too, was rewarded for recent form. After a poor tour of India, and a modest run since early 2015, Ronchi was left out for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy. Turning out for Wellington in the Plunket Shield, he scored a century and, on Thursday, struck an unbeaten 58 in a Super Smash match against Canterbury, which Wellington eventually lost in the one-over eliminator.Watling had scored 31 runs in the series against Australia, which New Zealand lost 3-0, while Nicholls played only one match, scoring 3. Astle was not given a game.New Zealand’s chairman of selectors Gavin Larsen acknowledged that Ronchi was seen as the best ODI wicketkeeper in the country and both players added value to the side with their experience.”With 12 years of domestic cricket under his belt and having previously spent time in the BlackCaps squad, Neil brings a lot of experience to the group,” Larsen said. “Neil was the top run-scorer in the Ford Trophy competition last year, with an average of 84.66. He has an impressive strike-rate and obviously fills the number four role with Ross out injured.”It’s been pleasing to see Luke scoring runs for Wellington again and he returns as one of the most experienced members of the squad. At this stage we see him as the best ODI gloveman in the country and the leadership he brings to the group is also immensely valuable.”The team will convene for a camp on December 23 and 24, with the first match scheduled for Boxing Day in Christchurch. The second and third ODIs will be played on December 29 and 31 in Nelson. The ODIs will be followed by three T20Is and two Tests.

Leeds United’s £15m "Leader" Wanted Back In Premier League

Leeds United defender Robin Koch is being targeted in a surprise cut-price swoop by Tottenham Hotspur, according to reports.

Is Robin Koch leaving Leeds?

The Whites centre-back arrived at Elland Road from SC Freiburg back in 2020 and has since gone on to make a total of 77 appearances to date where he was a regular feature in the first-team last season, making 36 starts from 38 games in the Premier League.

The Germany international, however, will be out of contract at the end of next season meaning that the upcoming window could be the club's final opportunity to cash in, should they not want to lose the 26-year-old for free, but regardless, Leeds officials could be forced to sanction his sale having now been relegated to the Championship.

Are Tottenham signing Koch?

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are setting their sights on Koch this summer, with the Leeds defender having been "shortlisted" as a serious centre-back option for Daniel Levy's new permanent manager.

Spurs know that the 6 foot 3 colossus will be available for a cut-price having dropped down to the second tier and his admirers are hopeful that £15m will be enough to reach an agreement. The Yorkshire outfit's star "fits the bill" in N17 and is "keen to stay" in the Premier League, so this could be one to watch in the weeks and months ahead.

Leeds United defender Robin Koch.

Should Leeds keep or sell Koch?

Leeds don’t have the most attacking type of centre-back in Koch having recorded zero goals or assists since putting pen to paper, but he is strong in the natural defensive aspect of his game and has even been dubbed a “leader” by journalist Josh Bunting so the board may want to do everything they can to retain his services beyond the summer.

The Whites titan, who earns £40k-per-week, was averaging 4.1 clearances, 3.1 aerial wins and 1.5 tackles per top-flight game last term, via WhoScored, so was a relatively solid performer in the heart of the backline despite the collective struggles in front of Illan Meslier and Joel Robles.

The Kaiserslautern native also brings wonderful versatility to the side with his ability to operate in six various positions over the grass, including everywhere across the backline and even three positions in the midfield, so this is yet another extremely useful attribute for the next manager to have at his disposal should any unexpected injuries occur in other roles.

Russell calls ban uncertainty 'stressing and depressing'

West Indies and Jamaica Tallawahs allrounder Andre Russell has made his first public comments since being charged by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) with committing an “anti-doping whereabouts” violation earlier this year for having allegedly missed three drug tests in a 12-month period. Three missed tests trigger a failed drug test ruling under anti-doping regulations.Preparing for Tallawahs’ final two games of the league stage of the Caribbean Premier League, in Lauderhill, Florida, Russell was asked what it had been like to play with the uncertainty of the JADCO tribunal process hanging over his head. Russell replied by describing the mental strain he has gone through since reports first surfaced in March that he was facing a two-year ban.”It’s not easy, honestly, it’s tough,” Russell said. “When I cross the rope, I definitely block it off my head but then when you go back to your room and you know you have to face reality and know that something is going on like that, it’s kind of stressing and depressing. But I have an amazing bunch of guys around me. So they keep me occupied, they keep me laughing. I just think that is a very good thing to do while going through something like that.”Everything is in place. My lawyers are doing whatever they have to do so I don’t really want to have to talk about it that much.”Russell avoided questions about last week’s independent panel hearing, offering a “no comment” when asked about the most recent events. According to , Russell’s lawyer Patrick Forster claimed at the hearing of an independent panel on July 20 that his client had received correspondence from JADCO for only twice – January to March, 2015 and July to September, 2015 – for allegedly missing the out-of-competition doping tests. In the mean time, Russell said he was focused on helping the first-place Tallawahs secure a second CPL title, after first winning it in 2013. Tallawahs round out their league stage by playing St Lucia Zouks twice, on July 30 and 31. Heading into the playoffs, a win in either game will clinch first place for Tallawahs, giving them two chances to reach the final.”This is what we live for, to be on top of the table,” Russell said. “We still have a few games to go. We’re still not going to take anything for granted. We’re going to try and play our best cricket so we can be in form going into the crucial games.”

Yorkshire cling on to preserve unbeaten run

ScorecardTim Groenewald gave Somerset a chance of victory•Getty Images

Somerset failed in their concerted bid to beat Yorkshire on the final day of their Specsavers’ County Championship game at the County Ground, Taunton.Despite dominating the game for the majority of the four days, Chris Rogers’ side came up short in the final session as Yorkshire held on to their unbeaten start to the Division One campaign. However, the loss of 19 overs in the day, to rain, might just have been the difference between winning for the first time this season, and yet another drawn gameResuming their first innings on 306 for 9, Yorkshire were quickly bowled out for 311 when Jamie Overton bowled Steven Patterson for 32. It might have been an early setback, but Patterson and Jack Brooks had certainly done their bit for the cause. In adding 74 for the 10th wicket, the pair had not only taken up valuable time, but had added valuable runs too.Somerset, as expected, enforced the follow-on and bowled particularly well with the new ball.Bowling coach Jason Kerr had highlighted the need for early wickets, at the end of day three, and though Adam Lyth and Alex Lees batted with due care and attention, prior to lunch, the afternoon session brought its reward.

Bowling ‘not good enough’ – Gillespie

Yorkshire head coach Jason Gillespie
“I won’t beat about the bush, we were outplayed by Somerset, without a doubt. But I am pleased that we were able to dig in and save the game. I felt that each player took responsibility and we go home having not lost the game. Our bowling was not good enough and we accept that. The thing we cant forget is that we havent lost a game of cricket despite being outplayed.”
Somerset captain Chris Rogers
“That is the best we have played this season, so far. On a very tough wicket to bowl on, we did fantastically well and nearly stole a win against the reigning champions. Let’s face it, had it not have been for the weather in the last two games, we would have probably won both matches.”

Lyth, who has scored over 800 runs at the County Ground in his last seven matches, was first to go, bowled by Overton when playing back to a short ball that kept low. Will Rhodes followed at 45 for 2 – caught at short leg by Tom Abell off the bowling of Jack Leach, and four runs later, Lees, who had scored only 11 off 97 balls, was bowled by Overton when offering no shot. The tea interval provided Yorkshire with some respite, but when Andrew Gale was caught by Leach off the bowling of Tim Groenewald at 69 for 4, Yorkshire were facing an anxious final two hours.Overton, whose spell on Monday had been described as ‘world class’ by Kerr, continued to bowl with real purpose. His third wicket came in the 53rd over when Gary Ballance carelessly flicked the 22-year-old bowler to Leach at square leg.At that stage, a victory for Somerset looks a distinct possibility. However, Jack Leaning and Liam Plunkett held out in the final hour and Yorkshire left for the long trip home with their unbeaten record still intact. When the captains shook hands shortly before six o’clock, Yorkshire had reached 141 for 6.Overton, Lewis Gregory and Groenewald continued to bowl well, without any good fortune, after tea, and director of cricket Matthew Maynard will be delighted with that as the side prepares for the T20 season, which for them kicks off on Friday against Kent, at Canterbury.Still, who knows what might have been had the inclement weather not have intervened.
