Dan Lawrence's statement century makes up lost time for Essex

Big hundred puts Derbyshire on the back foot in week before Test selection

Alan Gardner14-May-2021 Derbyshire 35 for 3 (Harmer 2-12) trail Essex 412 for 3 dec (Lawrence 152*, Westley 106, Browne 59, Cook 58) by 377 runsA day of sepulchral gloom in Chelmsford, pierced throughout by the ECG floodlights, was lit up by a blazing innings from Dan Lawrence, as Essex attempted to make up for lost time in their match against Derbyshire … and pretty much succeeded. Lawrence’s unbeaten 152 from 133 balls was the batting equivalent of a souped-up Vauxhall Nova revving its way up the main drag, and leaving tyre-marks over a series of beleaguered Derbyshire bowlers. It was bad light that came to the rescue for the visitors, at the end of an over from legspinner Matt Critchley in which Lawrence slammed the first three balls for six and ended up lying on his front after an unsuccessful attempt to club a fourth down the ground. The ball still went for four and Lawrence acknowledged the applause from his team-mates for reaching 150 from his position in the dirt, even if six sixes was now out of the question. “I thought it was on,” Lawrence said with a grin afterwards.Derbyshire’s respite was brief, however, as an Essex declaration followed by an improvement in the light allowed the home side to press their advantage – even while restricted to bowling spin from both ends. Simon Harmer removed Luis Reece lbw, not offering a shot, in his fourth over and Lawrence then bagged himself a wicket, too, as Billy Godleman turned the ball to short leg. Derbyshire’s captain briefly stood his ground, which was about as much resistance as his team put up all day.Essex claimed a third before the close, Harmer having Leus de Plooy taken by Lawrence at gully, as the defending champions began to circle their prey. The threat of more bad weather, following a first-day washout, may still encourage Derbyshire hopes of an escape; those of a more darkly comic persuasion warned that it could all be done and dusted on Saturday. That Essex were in such a commanding position come the close was largely down to a freewheeling third-wicket partnership of 221 in 36.4 overs between Lawrence and his captain, Tom Westley. Essex have not hit their straps yet in this campaign, as Westley acknowledged, but they have given themselves a chance of dodging the elements to record what would be only a second win in six games.”It was disappointing not being able to get out there yesterday in a bit of a must-win game for us,” Lawrence said. “So it was very good from our openers to put me and Tommy in a situation to go and express ourselves. We knew we had to get ahead of the game as quickly as possible.”Having scored three fifties in the opening five rounds of the Championship, with a high score of 90 on a deathly flat surface at Worcester, Lawrence had hinted at good form without making the sort of imposing scores that would guarantee his involvement in the upcoming Test series against New Zealand (selection is due to be announced next week). This was a bristling reminder of his kaleidoscopic talents – albeit against a Derbyshire attack featuring three players making their first appearances of the season – as Lawrence raced to his fastest first-class hundred before coming off in sight of a career best.”It was quite a big thing for me to get to that landmark, because I’ve scored a few runs already without getting hundreds,” he said. “I’ve scored a few fifties – so it was nice to get there and then just play with some freedom. Every batter would know it’s the best feeling in the world batting after a hundred so it was brilliant to have licence.”The first of Lawrence’s 16 fours was driven with a high front elbow through mid-off and he was soon signalling his intent to crack on, windmilling a cut against Fynn Hudson-Prentice over cover point and then taking the same bowler for three boundaries in five balls a few overs later. His half-century came from 66 balls, and he immediately went up a gear, nonchalantly mowing Dustin Melton over midwicket for his first six.Billy Stanlake, who made an eventful Derbyshire debut, was casually flipped into the seats in front of the makeshift press box at deep backward square leg to take Lawrence into the 90s, and he brought up three figures for the first time this summer via a nudge off Critchley, the landmark acknowledged with a curled fist pump before turning to take the applause from his team-mates. Critchley was dealt with more severely as Essex rattled on towards five batting points, one slog-sweep over midwicket reminiscent of Lawrence’s hold-the-pose six on Test debut in Galle earlier this year.Westley also scored a bristling hundred, his third of the season – in reaching three figures from 109 balls, he did so three deliveries quicker than Lawrence – as the pair built on a century opening stand during the morning session. Derbyshire hit back after lunch through Stanlake, playing his first first-class match since the 2019-20 Sheffield Shield season, but were largely left to wonder at the wisdom of their decision to bowl first, taken 24 hours earlier.Lawrence and Tom Westley both made hundreds in a run-laden day•Getty ImagesEssex had reached 132 for 0 at lunch, going at more than four runs an over despite a green tinge to the surface and a damp air to proceedings after persistent rain ruined any chance of play on Thursday. The scoring rate was aided by Stanlake’s trouble with front-foot no-balls during his opening spell, as Alastair Cook and Nick Browne took advantage of some insipid bowling to set a belligerent tempo in Essex’s attempts to overcome not only an opponent low on confidence but a poor forecast for the weekend. The sight of Stanlake taking the new ball promised intrigue. The 6ft 7in Australian, capped in both limited-overs formats, had only played eight first-class fixtures across five years but came to Derbyshire professing an eagerness to work on his red-ball game. An initial four overs brought six no-balls and almost as many aborted attempts at running in, prompting the fear that Stanlake’s enthusiasm might be short-lived.However, he discovered a much better rhythm from the River End when returning shortly before lunch, beating Cook with successive deliveries – one of which was too hot for Harvey Hosein to hold on to behind the stumps. He was rewarded for his perseverance after the interval, when Browne drove footlessly to be caught at slip (thus reducing his first-class average against Derbyshire to a mere 213.25). Cook then spooned a drive into the covers: Big Billy had landed Essex’s big fish, but there was the small matter of Lawrence and Westley to come.

Kelleher signs, £8m star bought: What Rodgers’ dream Celtic XI could be

The summer transfer window is officially open for business and Celtic have over two months to make moves to bolster their playing squad for the 2024/25 campaign.

Brendan Rodgers returned to Parkhead last year, to replace Ange Postecoglou, for his second spell in the dugout and enjoyed a respectable first season back at the club.

The Northern Irish head coach lifted two trophies last month as his side won the Scottish Premiership title and then the SFA Cup, with a 1-0 win over Rangers at Hampden Park.

He may now look to use the upcoming window to improve his team further to potentially add more silverware to the cabinet, along with more success in Europe, next season.

But what would the manager's dream starting lineup look like for the 2024/25 campaign if the club goes on to have a fantastic transfer window? Well, here is our best attempt at it…

1 Caoimhin Kelleher

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Celtic know that they have to find a new number one over the coming weeks and months after Joe Hart retired from professional football after three years at Parkhead.

HITC recently reported that Liverpool number two Caoimhin Kelleher is tempted by a possible move to Paradise but Celtic may struggle to afford a £15m deal for the Ireland international.

He could be the dream signing between the sticks as the Reds titan has proven himself in the Premier League, with 0.40 goals prevented and a 72% save success rate in ten league outings this season, and still has plenty of years left to improve and develop at the age of 25.

This means that the Hoops could land a long-term number one who could be sold on for a profit in the future if he excels in Scotland and attracts interest from elsewhere.

2 Alistair Johnston

Celtic defender Alistair Johnston.

At right-back, there is little need to source a replacement for Canada international Alistair Johnston as he was a terrific performer for Rodgers this term.

The 25-year-old dynamo showcased his attacking quality in the Scottish Premiership with 11 'big chances' created and five assists in 32 starts.

3 Cameron Carter-Vickers

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

At the heart of the defence, Cameron Carter-Vickers should remain a key figure for the Scottish giants as he has been an outstanding defender in the league over the last three years.

The USA international, signed – initially on loan – from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021, was named in the PFA Team of the Year for the 2021/22 campaign, the 2022/23 season, and for the year just gone.

4 Liam Scales

Celtic defender Liam Scales.

Alongside the American colossus, Ireland international Liam Scales could retain his position on the left side of the centre-back pairing for Celtic.

The former Aberdeen loanee formed a brilliant partnership with Carter-Vickers at the back, as shown by his inclusion in the PFA Team of the Year alongside his teammate.

5 Kieran Tierney

kieran-tierney-celtic

The second new signing in this dream XI could come at left-back with Kieran Tierney potentially making a return to Parkhead for a second spell at his boyhood club.

It was recently reported that the Hoops are keen on a deal to snap the Scotland international, who is currently at the European Championship, up and that the player is eager to make the move, although the report claimed that his wages could make a move complicated.

The left-footed dynamo assisted 37 goals in 170 games for Celtic during his first stint at Parkhead, which is a return of one every 4.59 matches and better than Greg Taylor's 25 assists in 173 outings – one every 6.92 clashes.

6 Callum McGregor

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.

Callum McGregor led the team to another Premiership title as captain this season and there is no immediate need to replace him in the middle of the park.

The Scotland international ended the season with the highest pass success rate (91.8%) of any active player for the club in the Premiership.

7 Reo Hatate

Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate.

Reo Hatate missed a staggering 40 games for club and country during the 2023/24 campaign but did showcase his quality for the Hoops during the previous season.

The 26-year-old maestro chipped in with six goals and eight assists in 32 Premiership games in Postecoglou's final season, and the Japan international will hope for an injury-free year next term to return to that form.

8 Matt O'Riley

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

Matt O'Riley has been linked with the likes of Newcastle United, Southampton, and Leicester City for a fee in the region of £30m but Rodgers would surely want to keep hold of him in his dream XI for next season.

The Danish magician racked up an eye-catching 18 goals and 13 assists in the Premiership this season and the Hoops would have a match-winning midfielder in their ranks again if they can retain his services.

9 Nicolas Kuhn

Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn.

On the right side of the attack, Nicolas Kuhn could keep his place in the starting XI after an impressive start to life in Glasgow after his move from Rapid Wien in January.

The German forward scored two goals and created five 'big chances' in just nine Premiership starts for Rodgers, and could look to hit the ground running in his first full season in Scotland next term.

10 Adam Idah

The third signing in this dream XI could be Ireland international Adam Idah, who spent the second half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Parkhead.

HITC recently reported that the Hoops want to spend £5m on the Ireland international but Norwich City are holding out for a fee of £8m for the forward.

Idah, who was hailed as "sensational" by Chris Sutton earlier this term, scored eight goals and provided two assists in 15 appearances and eight starts in the Premiership, with one goal every 76 minutes on average.

The 23-year-old star had a conversion rate of 27% in the league, whilst Kyogo Furuhashi's was only 14%, and his effiency in front of goal could make him a dream signing to lead the line next season if he is bought for £8m.

Mohammad Rizwan breaks into top 10 for T20I batters

Sri Lanka’s Dimuth Karunaratne and Dhananjaya de Silva move up in Test batting rankings

Mohammad Rizwan continued his rapid rise as a T20I batter by entering the top 10 in the ICC rankings on the back of his player-of-the-series performance in Zimbabwe.Rizwan hit 82* and 91* in the two matches Pakistan won, and that took him up five slots to tenth. He went past Eoin Morgan and Rohit Sharma on the table where Dawid Malan, Aaron Finch, Babar Azam, Devon Conway and Virat Kohli retained the top five positions.Haris Rauf was the other Pakistan player to make a noteworthy gain, up 17 places to 21st after taking four wickets in three matches.Zimbabwe, who won the second T20I to give themselves a chance of a rare series win, moved up one slot – past Ireland – to No. 11 in the team rankings, while Pakistan remained in fourth place. Elsewhere, Nepal’s victory in the T20I tri-series at home against Netherlands and Malaysia meant a move up (by one spot, past Scotland) to No 14, while Netherlands slipped from 17th to 18th and Malaysia stayed at No. 31.The drawn first Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Pallekele had a number of major performances by the batters of the two sides, and that reflected in the Test batting rankings too.Dimuth Karunaratne’s career-best 244 helped him gain seven places to reach the 15th position. His 676 rating points was also his best since last January. The other Sri Lanka batter to move up was Dhananjaya de Silva, who scored 166, and was involved in a 345-run stand for the fourth wicket with Karunaratne in Sri Lanka’s only innings. He gained seven spots to reach his career-best 28th position.Among Bangladesh batters, Mominul Haque’s 11th Test century, and first overseas, took him from 35th to joint 31st, while Vishwa Fernando was the only bowler to have a decent haul, and his 4 for 96 in the first innings took him to 43rd place.

Tim Southee's 300th leaves New Zealand seven wickets from victory

Azhar Ali and Fawad Alam will begin the final day with Pakistan needing an improbable 302 to win

Karthik Krishnaswamy29-Dec-2020Tim Southee’s 300th Test wicket was the highlight of a quality seam-bowling display that left New Zealand seven wickets away from winning the Mount Maunganui Test. Having declared 20 minutes before tea to leave Pakistan more than four sessions to bat out and an improbable 373 to win, New Zealand used the new ball brilliantly to leave Pakistan three down at stumps.Tim Southee picked up his 300th wicket in his 76th Test match•AFP via Getty ImagesThe older ball did not do a great deal off the surface in terms of sideways movement, though up-and-down bounce was a constant worry at the back of the batsmen’s minds. With that in mind, Azhar Ali and Fawad Alam did well to see off the last 20.1 overs of the day, seeing off testing spells from New Zealand’s pace quartet. With Pakistan’s bowlers having extracted minimal help in the morning, it was clear that the pitch had flattened out significantly and not deteriorated to a great extent. It was crucial for New Zealand to maximise the new ball, but there was little doubt they would, with Southee and Trent Boult in charge of it.They took just 14 balls to dismiss both openers for no score.Watch cricket on ESPN+

Boult removed Abid Ali with his second ball, getting it to climb disconcertingly from just short of a length, with the pace, the tight line and the left-arm angle leaving the batsman nowhere to go. All he could do from his initial forward press was to fend desperately at the throat-high ball, and glove it through to the keeper. An over later, it was Southee’s turn to celebrate, after sending back Shan Masood by subtler means. Having moved the previous ball back into the left-hander from around the wicket, he bowled a cross-seam delivery that just kept going on straight along its line in the corridor. Never the most extravagant mover of feet, Masood poked at it and edged to first slip.Jamieson pulled up for throwing ball at Faheem

Kyle Jamieson has been fined 25% of his match fee for throwing the ball at Faheem Ashraf “at high speed” during the third day’s action on Monday, breaching Level 1 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct, which relates to “throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner”, in the process. The incident took place in the 75th over of the Pakistan first innings, with an ICC statement explaining, “Jamieson, after fielding the ball on his follow through, threw it in the direction of Faheem Ashraf at high speed when the batsman was away from the stumps but within the popping crease and not intending to take a run”. Apart from the fine, one demerit point was added to Jamieson’s disciplinary record.

Either side of the tea break, Azhar and Haris Sohail hung on for 15.3 overs against some probing bowling, with the former looking in excellent rhythm as he got his innings going with a pair of confident drives down the ground. The drives, and a clipped two between mid-on and midwicket off Boult in the 12th over of the innings, showed how balanced Azhar was at the crease – a feature of his innings so far, in attack and more so in defence.Haris, however, was less certain, with his lack of footwork keeping the New Zealand bowlers interested. Southee exploited it brilliantly, setting him up with a rising short ball – which he kept down fairly comfortably – and following up with a full, driving-length ball that Haris failed to get his front foot to. Mitchell Santner took a low catch at short extra-cover, and Southee had become the third New Zealander, after Richard Hadlee and Daniel Vettori, to the 300 mark.New Zealand began their second innings at the start of the day’s play, with much interest surrounding the conditions. Over the 45.3 overs they played before declaring, only the occasional instance of uncertain bounce gave the batsmen cause for worry.Mohammad Abbas looked the most threatening of Pakistan’s bowlers during his new-ball spell, testing the openers’ judgement with tight lines around off stump, and just a hint of seam movement. Slanting the ball across Tom Latham, he produced the only passage of play when ball dominated bat, finding the left-hander’s edge three times in two overs only for the ball to fall short of the slips cordon each time.Tom Blundell and Tom Latham added 111 for the first wicket•Getty ImagesThe openers endured only one other moment of genuine concern thereafter, when Faheem Ashraf got one to scoot through at ankle height and sneak under a drive from Tom Blundell, missing off stump by a matter of inches.Otherwise it was smooth sailing during a first-wicket stand of 111, with Blundell making an impressive comeback into the runs after scores of 14, 14 and 5 in his first three Test innings of the summer. He seemed to get into better positions than during the first innings, with a more pronounced back-and-across trigger helping him break his inertia and get his feet moving. He took a little time settling, with the lack of pace off the pitch causing him to mistime a few of his drives, but after the drinks break he flowed smoothly, looking especially strong on the pull and the cut, and reached his fifty off 87 balls.Latham grew increasingly assured the longer he stayed at the crease, and used the sweep efficiently as always, with Yasir Shah getting little of the sharp turn or bounce that he extracted during the first innings. After six overs in the first session, he wasn’t seen again.Leading by 290 at lunch, New Zealand made a concerted effort to up the ante after the break, with Blundell showing their intent by slogging at Abbas and having his leg stump dislodged. The singles flowed smoothly against deep-set fields, and there were frequent attempts to go hard at the bowling too, particularly when Pakistan switched tack to bowling short. Naseem Shah picked up three wickets in the bargain, a small consolation for an otherwise downbeat day for the visitors.

Greatbatch elected New Zealand Cricket president as board posts NZ$ 2.2 million profit

NZC turned around a projected deficit of $ 6.8 million.

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Nov-2025Former wicketkeeper-batter Mark Greatbatch has been elected as New Zealand Cricket (NZC) president, the board said in a release on Wednesday. A press release from the board also announced a profit of NZ$ 2.2 million for this financial year, turning around a projected deficit of NZ$ 6.8 million.Greatbatch, who played 41 Tests and 84 ODIs for New Zealand from 1988 to 1996, has also served as head coach and selector for the national men’s team. He replaced Lesley Murdoch, who completed her three-year term.”I want to convey my enormous gratitude to Lesley for her professionalism as the NZC President over the past three years, and for her great support for the game as well as the organisation,” NZC chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon said.”I also want to welcome and congratulate Mark as our new President and wish him well in the role. We are fortunate in New Zealand cricket to have such strong figures wanting to contribute and give back to the game.”NZC had returned a surplus of NZ$ 8 million in 2024. Wednesday’s press release said NZC’s “reserves [were] at a record $37m, supported by strong broadcasting agreements, high-value playing programmes, and a solid commercial base.””NZC’s financial position is a strong one,” Puketapu-Lyndon said. “A small net surplus represents a significant outperformance against budget, reflecting prudent management and disciplined oversight – through what was a challenging operating environment.”Cricket here has never been a one-size-fits-all affair and NZC places great value in the ability of our Major and District Associations, and clubs to understand what works best in their regions and catchments.”We’re committed to working closely with them to ensure they’re well equipped to service the grassroots environment upon which our entire game is based.”

Frank tipped to U-turn on Tottenham promise by axing £100k-p/w star in bold move

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank has won plenty of admirers after overseeing an excellent start to the season, but he could have a key decision to make regarding one of his senior squad members.

Tottenham preparing for Premier League clash against Wolves

Spurs have won five out of their first eight matches under Frank in all competitions, including excellent victories against Premier League title-chasing Man City and London rivals West Ham.

Already, the Lilywhites have showcased the needed resilience which was almost entirely absent during Ange Postecoglou’s final season in charge.

Tottenham boast one of the finest top flight defensive records thus far, apart from Arsenal and Crystal Palace — the only teams to have conceded fewer goals than Frank’s side — and displayed serious professionalism during their last Premier League outing at Brighton.

The Amex Stadium has been a sorry hunting ground for Spurs in recent years, and that threatened to be the case again when Fabian Hurzeler’s men found themselves 2-0 up.

However, the north Londoners didn’t let that deficit ruin them — fighting back to earn a deserved 2-2 draw and having more chances to get on the scoresheet.

Now, Tottenham prepare to host a struggling Wolves side at 20:00 on Saturday evening, and all signs point towards this being a routine three points.

Lucas Bergvall has been one of Tottenham’s players of the season and will likely be given the nod against Vitor Pereira’s visitors, while Micky van de Ven is attracting interest from Real Madrid as he continues to showcase his defensive prowess in Lilywhite.

Pape Sarr is also attracting praise for his brilliant midfield displays, and striker Richarlison has looked transformed since Frank’s arrival at N17.

The list goes on and on. However, one player has struggled under Frank – £100,000-per-week midfielder Yves Bissouma.

Reports earlier this month suggested that Tottenham were prepared to listen to offers for the Mali international, back when the Turkish, Saudi, Greek and Portuguese transfer windows remained open after the UK deadline.

Frank omitted Bissouma from his 22-man Champions League squad and publicly criticised him for showing up late to training, but since then, the Dane has stated that there is still a place for the 29-year-old in his first team.

He is currently on the comeback trail from injury and yet to make a single competitive appearance since Frank took charge, but the Tottenham manager has now been told to U-turn on his promise and make a bold Bissouma move.

Tottenham told to axe Yves Bissouma and drop him to Under-21s

Speaking to Tottenham News, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King tipped Frank to drop Bissouma to the club’s Under-21s, before he sells the Brighton star at the nearest opportunity.

Bissouma played a key role in Tottenham’s run to the Europa League final last season, and has displayed flashes of real quality throughout his stay at the club.

However, with the midfielder’s contract expiring at the end of the season, and summer signing Joao Palhinha seriously impressing in his stead, the writing is perhaps on the wall for a player who seems destined to leave.

6, 6, 6: Tahlia McGrath conjures stunning century in final-over thriller

A round-up from the opening day of the WNCL which produced a number of standout innings

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Sep-2022Tahlia McGrath produced an astonishing finish at Karen Rolton Oval as she struck three consecutive sixes to both bring up her century and carry South Australia to victory after they had needed 15 from the last over. It meant that the earlier centuries from Ellyse Perry and Annabel Sutherland, the latter’s first in domestic cricket, which formed an unbroken stand of 209 proved in vain.

McGrath and Emma de Broughe set the chase up with a second-wicket stand of 83, but Victoria stayed in the game by chipping through the middle order as Sophie Molineux and Sophie Day shared four wickets. But while McGrath was there her team were in the contest although needing 15 off Sutherland appeared a tall order until McGrath did it in style. Earlier, Perry had come to the crease in the first over after Molineux was given caught behind and batted throughout the innings although the final result did leave some questions about the tempo of Victoria’s innings. Perry ended on 117 from 143 balls while Sutherland reached her hundred with a six off McGrath at the start of the last over – McGrath would later repay the favour.Queensland 9 for 307 (Voll 145, Hoskin 3-39) beat New South Wales 196 (Wilson 65, G Harris 3-24) by 111 runsGeorgia Voll’s 145 was the centrepiece of Queensland’s victory•Getty ImagesNineteen-year-old Georgia Voll dominated at North Sydney Oval with a superbly-constructed 145 as Queensland secured a huge victory over New South Wales. Voll’s innings came in three stages: she led Queensland’s early momentum as the major contributor in an opening stand of 51, consolidated through the middle as she lost partners at reasonably regular intervals, then accelerated at the death with the scoop shot a regular option. The next-highest score was Laura Kimmince’s 35 which came off just 15 balls including three sixes and powered a mid-innings surge. Jess Jonassen (16) and Courtney Sippel (19 not out) then played useful cameos while Voll continued to lead the way. New South Wales were poor in the field and lost the services of Maitlan Brown in her fourth over after she was pulled from the after bowling three big full toss. The one bright spot was debutant Ebony Hoskin who claimed a wicket were first ball in WNCL – Georgia Redmayne smartly caught down the leg side by Alyssa Healy – and in all took the first three wickets to fall. NSW’s chase started promisingly as Healy and Tahlia Wilson added 54, but Healy nicked to slip – a leading edge as she aimed to the leg side – and when Wilson was run out in the 26th over the home side fell away.Western Australia 2 for 147 (Piparo 75*) beat ACT 143 (Carter 65, King 5-12) by eight wicketsAlana King celebrates with Beth Mooney•Getty ImagesAlana King started her season in the form she has shown for the last 12 months, taking 5 for 12 as Western Australia demolished ACT by eight wickets at the WACA. After an opening stand of 55 between Rebecca Carter and Katie Mack, ACT lost all ten wickets for 88 with six batters going for ducks – four of then against King. Carter, who struck ten boundaries in her 65, was the seventh wicket when she fell to Amy Edgar who claimed 2 for 23 from nine overs. Although Beth Mooney fell for 17 in her first innings for WA the chase was completed with ease as captain Chloe Piparo finishing unbeaten on 75.

He’s like Mbappe & Haaland: Arsenal want to sign £54m Havertz replacement

It’s become impossible to ignore: Arsenal’s season is starting to fall apart.

Mikel Arteta’s side have dealt with a number of injuries, unnecessary suspensions and, at best, underwhelming performances on the pitch, which have left them nine points off Liverpool on top of the Premier League.

However, while things look grim for the North Londoners, there is still time to get their campaign back on track, especially if they make the most of the January transfer window.

Fortunately, recent reports suggest that they may well do that, as the latest star touted for a move to N5 is an imposing striker who could be the ideal Kai Havertz replacement and has even been compared to Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report by journalist Rudy Galetti, Arsenal are interested in Juventus’ star striker, Dušan Vlahović.

The respected reporter has revealed that the Serie A giants are “open to letting Dusan go,” and that the Gunners have been “monitoring” his situation and are “expected to meet his agent soon to gather fresh information.”

There is no mention of a potential price in the report, but Transfermarkt values him at €65m, which is about £55m, and with his contract expiring in 19 months, combined with the Old Lady’s willingness to let him go, that seems like a realistic price.

It would still represent a sizeable investment from Arsenal, but given Vlahovic’s ability in front of goal and the comparisons to Haaland and Mbpabbe, it could be one worth making, especially as he could be the dream replacement for Havertz.

Why Vlahović would be an ideal Havertz replacement

Okay, so before we get to the comparison between Vlahović and the man he’d have to displace from Arsenal’s starting lineup, let’s examine this comparison to arguably the best players in the world right now: Mbappé and Haaland.

The comparison stems from an interview with football agent Roberto De Fanti in January 2022, before the Serbian star moved to Turin.

In the interview, De Fanti described the then 22-year-old poacher as possessing “all the attributes to become a big star” and that, due to him being so young and yet so exciting at the time, he was “one of those guys on the list like Mbappé and Halland which all the European clubs will want to buy.”

Now, it would be fair to say that the Belgrad-born marksman has not quite hit the heights of those two just yet, but during his time with Fiorentina, when the comparison was made, it looked like he might, as he left La Viola with an incredible record of 49 goals and eight assists in 108 appearances, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.92 games.

With all that said, how does the 31-capped international stack up to the Gunners’ number 29? After all, it’ll be him he needs to surpass to get regular game time in North London.

Fortunately for him, he’s comfortably outperformed the former Chelsea ace over the last few years, as since the start of the 22/23 campaign, the 24-year-old has found the back of the net on 41 occasions and provided eight assists in 96 appearances, equating to a goal involvement on average every 1.95 games.

In contrast, the Gunners’ Aachen-born poacher has scored 30 goals and provided nine assists in 115 appearances, which comes to an average of a goal involvement every 2.94 games.

Unfortunately for the German, not even his average of a goal involvement every 2.34 games for the Gunners is better than the man who may soon replace him.

Ultimately, while it won’t be cheap, adding Vlahovic’s goals to the team in January is a no-brainer, even if it impacts Havertz’s game time. Therefore, Arsenal should act on their interest as soon as possible.
