In the aftermath of Chelsea's disappointing 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at the Old Trafford on Saturday, goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has issued a heartfelt apology to his team-mates and the Blues' fans. The Spaniard was sent off in the fifth minute of the game after a rash challenge on Bryan Mbeumo just outside the penalty area, which cost the visitors dearly.
Sanchez takes accountability for Chelsea's loss
Chelsea goalkeeper Sanchez has issued a heartfelt apology in the wake of his team's disappointing 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday. Sanchez was sent off in the fifth minute after a mistimed challenged denied Bryan Mbeumo a clear goalscoring opportunity, leaving the visitors handicapped.

Taking to social media after the game, Sanchez asked for forgiveness and took the blame of Chelsea's first league defeat of this season upon his shoulders. "On me today guys, big sorry for that, team put a massive effort in the second half but couldn't get there," the former Brighton keeper wrote on his Instagram story.
Unwanted history made by the Chelsea No.1
Sanchez's disastrous early red card earned him a place in both Chelsea and Premier League history books. Indeed, no other Chelsea player has ever been sent off earlier in the top-flight, while only two other goalkeepers have managed to be sent off earlier.
GettyHow many games will Sanchez miss?
Given that referee Peter Bankes sent him off for denying the opposition player a clear-cut goalscoring chance, the Spanish international will only serve a one-match suspension. He will be unavailable for Tuesday's Carabao Cup clash against Lincoln City, but will return for next weekend's Premier League outing against his former employers Brighton.
da spicy bet: In recent years, Crystal Palace have developed an excellent transfer strategy that allows them to pick up bargains every window.
da dobrowin: However, they have also proven to be successful at developing those talents into top players, which will now be the task of new boss Oliver Glasner.
Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze are two examples of their brilliant recruitment, and they are hoping Daniel Munoz and Adam Wharton will continue this run.
That said, there’s one player that stands out who has seen their market value increase since joining the club.
What Palace paid for Michael Olise
Prior to his move to Palace, Michael Olise was playing his football for Reading in the Championship, the club he made his professional debut at, which was in a 3-0 defeat to Leeds United in 2019.
However, it would be two seasons later that he really started to show his class and immense quality, as over his first two campaigns, the winger made 23 appearances in the second division, picking up just one assist.
That said, during the 2020/21 he announced himself as one of the most exciting talents in England, boasting an incredible record of seven goals and 12 assists in 37 starts, playing as both an attacking midfielder and a winger.
The following summer, Patrick Vieira decided to splash £8m on the left-footed ace, in what has proved to be one of the best steals in recent Premier League history.
Michael Olise’s market value in 2024
Since arriving at the Eagles, Olise has continued to develop as a player, and despite the step up to the Premier League often being overwhelming, the now-22-year-old wasn’t fazed one bit.
The number seven had his minutes managed in the first season, starting just 12 games but playing 26 matches in the league, with a record of two goals and five assists.
Last season, his creativity really began to flourish, as he picked up 11 assists and played in all but one game in the top flight. Unfortunately, injuries have ruined this campaign for Olise, missing 13 games, but he’s started to develop his goal-scoring ability, netting six goals and providing three assists in just eight starts.
One game this season that sums up what Olise’s all about was against Brentford at home when the Eagles won 3-1, and the table below highlights why he’s now valued 650% more than what he cost the club, with recent reports indicating that he could fetch a fee of roughly £60m this summer.

The fact that Olise has added goals to his game now makes him “superb,” as per Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, while also putting him among the elite wingers who can both create and find the back of the net themselves.
The France U21 gem can also be a threat via his dribbling or his passing, which makes him extremely unpredictable and difficult to stop. His work rate is also unbelievable, and he is willing to get stuck in for his side, which just makes him even more valuable.
Michael Olise
The signing of Olise will go down as one of the bargains of the past decade, especially if he continues to live up to his potential, and Palace will hope that they can unearth plenty more Olise-like talents in the future.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and fiancee Perrie Edwards have revealed they are expecting a second child. The Little Mix favourite posted a beautifully shot black-and-white clip to Instagram, where the pop star, Oxlade-Chamberlain and their four-year-old son Axel joined her in a moving family moment.

WHAT HAPPENED?
The video showed Perrie turning to the camera in a white T-shirt emblazoned with the lyrics from her new single If He Wanted To, He Would. Beaming with joy, she revealed her growing bump before Alex wrapped his arms around her. Little Axel then added the sweetest touch, kissing his mum’s stomach before the trio embraced in a tender family hug. Her caption? A simple, cheeky line: “Guess what hunnies…” – enough to send fans into a frenzy of congratulations.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The announcement comes after a painful journey for Perrie and Alex, who have suffered not one but two devastating miscarriages. The singer bravely opened up earlier this year on Paul C Brunson’s We Need To Talk podcast, admitting that her first pregnancy ended almost as soon as it began.
“So I had a miscarriage very early on with my first ever pregnancy, and it was so early,” she said. “I remember finding out I was pregnant. Obviously, I started bleeding not long after, and I went to the hospital and I had the scan and they were like, ‘There’s no baby.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve made this up. Maybe I got a false positive or something.’ And I remember being on my own at the appointments because nobody was there.”
When she later carried Axel, born in August 2021, Perrie admitted she was constantly fearful of history repeating itself. She confessed to feeling “on edge” throughout the pregnancy, longing just to make it past the 12-week scan. That fear became reality again during Little Mix’s farewell tour in 2022, when Perrie miscarried at 20 weeks.

WHAT NEXT FOR OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN?
While Perrie celebrates, her fiancee Oxlade-Chamberlain faces uncertainty in his professional world. The former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder recently had his contract with Besiktaş terminated on 27 August 2025, with the Turkish side paying him €1.75 million in severance. The 32-year-old remains a free agent and is now weighing up his next move. Reports suggest Leeds United are monitoring his situation, while Birmingham City are also believed to be interested in bringing him back to English football.
da roleta: Arsenal's victory over Liverpool yesterday evening was one to remember, for the home fans anyway.
da esport bet: As they did in their FA Cup encounter just last month, Mikel Arteta's side came out flying, pinning the Reds into their half and creating some great chances. Only this time, they were able to put them away, and now they're firmly back in the Premier League title race.
The Gunners were the superior side to a man on the night – excluding a mad 30 seconds at the end of the first half – and while there were various stand-out players, it was the experienced and calm Jorginho who just about stood above the rest, putting in a remarkable performance and showing why the Arsenal boss has so much faith in him.
The Italian was near enough perfect, and while he's closer to the end of his career than the start, the Arsenal faithful can rest easy, as Hale End could be about to deliver a ready-made replacement in the coming years.
Jorginho's game in numbers
While the team's performance was impressive as a whole, if there was one area of the pitch where Arsenal well and truly dominated their northern opponents, it was midfield.
The Jorginho and Declan Rice duo played as if they were a trio, covering every blade of grass, making brilliant tackle after brilliant tackle and pressing the Reds' midfield as if they weren't some of the best players in the league.
The Standard's Simon Collings gave both of them a 9/10 for their efforts, claiming that the 32-year-old 'rolled back the years' and put in 'one of his best performances for the Gunners', which is hard to disagree with.
In his 97 minutes on the pitch, the former Chelsea ace had 71 touches, completed 45 of his 53 passes (85%), made one key pass, won four ground duels, won three aerial duels, made two clearances, three interceptions, and two tackles.
It is hard to overstate just how vital the Imbituba-born maestro was for the Gunners yesterday, and while he may have been looked at as nothing more than reliable cover by Arsenal fans beforehand, there is a strong argument that he should be in the starting lineup from here onwards.

And, once he finally does hang up his boots or move on, it looks as if the club might already have their own ready-made replacement to step into the void.
Why fans should be excited about Salah-Eddine Oulad M'Hand
So the first thing to clear up is that, as things stand, and probably for the next two to three years, Salah-Eddine Oulad M'Hand is simply not going to be ready to step into the shoes of Jorginho, nor is he likely to break into the first team, but that's alright.
The young Dutchman only turned 20 in the summer, and with the Italian still looking fit, Rice being the world-class midfielder he is, and the reasonable chance of midfield reinforcements arriving in the summer, there is no need to rush the youngster's development.
That said, his performances at the youth level serve as a promise for what could be an impressive senior career. The Den-Haag-born midfielder started his footballing journey with Dutch giants Feyenoord, before joining the Hale End setup in 2020.
In all, he made 38 appearances for the Eredivisie side's youth teams, scoring three goals and providing three assists along the way, whereas, in England, he has made 26 appearances for the Gunners' U23 team, scoring an impressive six goals and providing four assists to boot.

Following this impressive stint in the youth sides, Arsenal opted to send Salah on loan to Championship side Hull City last season, but an injury in preseason saw him return to the Gunners in the winter break, and unfortunately he wasn't able to make a single appearance for the Tigers due to this time on the sidelines.
Instead of simply returning to junior football this season, he has been back in the Netherlands, on loan with FC Den Bosch, where he has made eight appearances thus far.
While the former Feyenoord prospect has already endured some significant setbacks in his short career, the fact that he is back playing again should show Arteta and Co that he has the right mentality to make it at the Emirates.
Salah-Eddine Oulad M'Hand could be Jorginho's heir apparent
Described as a player who has "worked tirelessly" to get where he is by Chris Weatley, Salah unquestionably has the drive and commitment to replicate Jorginho's journey. However, the pair have more than grit and determination in common.
Both players have the ability to play in both a central and defensive midfield role. While the Italian prefers the latter and the youngster the former, they're both malleable to their manager's needs.
Where Jorginho has been deployed in a central midfield three times this year alone, Salah has occasionally played as a six during his time at Arsenal.
However, with Rice himself telling TNT Sport (via The Athletic) earlier this season that defensive midfield is his best position, it's unlikely that either the experienced Italian or former Feyenoord prodigy will be tasked with taking over that six-role long-term.
So, the perfect heir will need to excel primarily as a central midfielder who has the ability to move up and down the pitch according to the needs of his manager and team.
Arsenal close to new deal for player Arteta loves
He’s been called “really important”.
ByCharlie Smith Feb 5, 2024
Ultimately, it will always be hard to replace a player as intelligent, classy and useful as Jorginho is, but the "superb" Salah, as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, certainly looks as if he could get close, and in doing so, potentially saving the club an awful lot of money, money that could be better spent further up the pitch.

A significant West Ham United transfer update has now come to light involving Wolfsburg forward and current Torino loanee Josip Brekalo.
The Lowdown: Moyes eyeing fresh faces…
Hammers boss David Moyes, having guided his side through another memorable Premier League season, reportedly has fresh faces on the agenda before the beginning of 2022/2023.
[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-5/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]
The Times say he’s set to target a central defender, new midfielder and striker with West Ham having failed to bolster the latter position in January.
Moyes needs an alternative option to Michail Antonio given the Jamaica international’s concerning injury record in past campaigns with news now emerging on Croatia international Brekalo.
The Latest: West Ham open discussions…
According to Calciomercato.it, West Ham have opened discussions to sign Brekalo by expressing their interest – emerging as one of the clubs to either lodge a ‘draft offer’ or ‘formal request of information’.
Indeed, the Italian source also claims that Moyes’ side have made a ‘concrete’ pre-summer move for Brekalo alongside the likes of Atletico Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt and Southampton.
The Verdict: Ideal man?
The 30-cap ace has seriously impressed whilst on loan in Serie A from Wolfsburg with members of the media even calling his form ‘frightening’ (Josh Bunting, Islington Gazette).
His seven goals and two assists domestically just scratch the surface of his quality with Brekalo also averaging more key passes per 90 than any regular Torino regular over 2021/2022 (WhoScored).
The forward averages 1.3 successful take-ons per 90, a greater number than all of his teammates, leaving little wonder Moyes and co have now made contact.
In other news: Report: Moyes now very likely to make major bid for ‘world class’ player who ‘likes’ West Ham! Find out more here.

Two all-time greats have spent the best part of 20 years scrapping it out for the right to be considered the best player on the planet – and potentially the finest to have ever played the game. They have 13 Ballons d’Or between them, record-breaking collections of trophies and countless entries in the history books.

Ronaldo is due to turn 40 in 2025, while Messi is approaching his 37th birthday, but former USMNT star Holden can see both men playing through to the 2026 World Cup. He has told : “If we can ride this Messi vs. Ronaldo, in the comparison that has probably driven them internally as well in their motivation to keep pushing, and as long as they have that drive, there’s no reason these guys can’t still be playing at a high level for many years to come. These guys rarely have had major injuries. If you look at Ronaldo, he’s probably got the body of a 21-year-old still in his physique. And yet, Messi has been able to evolve and change his game and adapt to his current physical restraints, which he still has that intense speed and acceleration and finishing ability.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Fellow former United States international Lalas is reluctant to speculate on what the future could hold for two GOATs, with there questions to be asked of how motivated they are to stay at the top while turning out in MLS and the Saudi Pro League for Inter Miami and Al-Nassr. He said: “There was a time not too long ago before Messi was a champion of the world where it did not go well in terms of the final product, and he retired. I’m just fascinated this summer, as it relates to 2026, what he looks like with Argentina now in the first time since the World Cup and, more importantly, how much has changed relative to how we look at him. Not that he’s not great, but in the context of America and his new backyard and his neighbourhood and [what] he’s doing with Inter Miami, as opposed to Cristiano Ronaldo over there in Saudi Arabia, and for a lot of people, it’s kind of out of [sight], out of mind. Even though they’re competing in tournaments, and they’re happening at the same time, there will [still] be the inevitable compare and contrast with what’s going on and the fates of both of these teams relative to these two incredible players.”

Messi is readying himself for Copa America duty with Argentina, as they seek to defend that continental crown, while evergreen Portuguese forward Ronaldo is about to open a bid to land a second European Championship title in his illustrious career.
Rory Burns believes that Jofra Archer will be looking forward to dishing out some of the medicine that he and his fellow tailenders received on the first day of action at Lord’s, after being welcomed to Test cricket by a fiery onslaught from Pat Cummins.Archer, who cranked his pace up past 92mph in a promising but wicketless six-over burst before stumps, was on the receiving end from ball one of his Test career, as Cummins went short with ten of his eleven deliveries, before finally having him caught off a leading edge in the gully for 12.And he was not alone in being peppered by a pumped-up Cummins, with Burns himself taking two blows in the space of three deliveries before fencing another lifter in his subsequent over to short leg, where Cameron Bancroft clung onto a brilliant one-handed take.”It’s always nice to get into a little bit of a scrap,” said Burns. “Obviously he got two to hit the same spot, which was nice, but I was just trying to getting amongst it and tough it out.”Burns added that he had been warned from the very start of his innings what was in store for him, but put that down to the fact that, with 197 runs from 472 balls in the series to date, Australia are starting to think about ways to extract him from the crease.”I’ve obviously batted a few balls so far in this Test series, so they’re looking at different ways of getting me out,” he said. “I think Nathan Lyon ran past me this morning and mentioned it within about three balls, so I was well versed in what I was looking at, and prepared for what I was getting. But it’s just a good battle isn’t it?”Jofra Archer’s first over in Test cricket was a lively affair•Getty Images
Asked if Archer was looking forward to getting thrown the ball when Cummins comes into bat tomorrow, Burns replied: “Yeah, I’d have thought so. He copped a fair few as well so he’s probably looking forward to getting his own back.”It’s quite an obvious tactic, what they’re doing, so the boys are preparing for it. And luckily we can dish out some of our own in this game as well. We’ve got some boys in our armoury that do the same things, so it should be pretty interesting.”Lyon, who claimed not to remember his early warning to Burns, admitted that he too was bound to be in Archer’s sights, and joked that it wasn’t a prospect that he entirely relished.”Mate, I can’t bat, so what do you reckon?” he said. “I’m a No.10, No.11 batter, and I average 10.”It’s a world-class bowling attack. It’s Jofra’s first Test, but he’s a world-class bowler. We all know that. You know that. the world knows that. [Stuart] Broad, the same thing. Yeah, of course, it’s going to be challenging.”But it’s Test cricket. That’s why we play it, and for me personally, I want to challenge myself against the best players in the world. And these guys are the best bowlers in the world. So even though I can’t bat I’ll go out and give it a go, unless you want to do it for me!”On the match situation, Burns admitted that England would have fancied a higher score after getting first-use of a good Lord’s pitch, but believes that their total of 258 puts them firmly in the contest.”It’s tight, isn’t it?” he said. “I think it’s a competitive total but there’s probably a sense of disappointment there at the same time. But it’s kept everyone interested all day, because it seamed and If they missed their length you’ve been able to punish it. And it’s just started to offer a little bit to a spinner too, so I think it’s game on, and we’re right in amongst it.”

Dougie Brown reflects on poor finish to their batting as one of the turning points
Peter Della Penna13-Apr-2019UAE may have been denied an opportunity to pull off an upset courtesy bad light, but their head coach Dougie Brown feels it was the correct decision to walk off. When the match was decided by DLS method, Zimbabwe needed 25 off three overs with six wickets in hand.Brown felt the light had been deteriorating badly for some time as play continued for several minutes beyond the sunset time of 5.49pm. This extension was largely a result of a two-hour delay for rain in the first innings that resulted in the chase being truncated to 35 overs, off which Zimbabwe were set a revised 210.”It’s not an ideal way to finish a one-day international, because of bad light,” Brown told ESPNcricinfo. “If I’m honest, it was very, very dark. We probably could have come off a couple of overs earlier but we didn’t. The umpires tried to keep us on the field, which I think was the right decision, while spin was being bowled. But the game was still very much in the balance at 25 required off 18 balls.”I think going off because of the light was the correct decision, but it’s really bitterly disappointing for either team that none of us really got a chance to win the game.”Brown gave credit to Shaiman Anwar and Ghulam Shabber giving UAE a chance to win in the first place. The pair offset Kyle Jarvis’ three-for inside seven overs by putting together 131 on either side of the rain break at the 29-over mark.”We lost the toss again and it was very favourable conditions to bowl,” Brown said. “They bowled really well for the first three wickets but thereafter Shaiman and Shabber played exceptionally well and they deserve a hell of a lot of credit for the way that they went about constructing their innings. Disappointing to not finish as well as we could have done, but was wery happy to be defending 209 in 35 overs.”The pitch was still offering a little bit for us although the outfield was wet so we had to try and make sure we dipped in with the new ball. We bowled pretty well. We didn’t quite manage to get too many wickets with the new ball but we chipped away and got ourselves into a winning position at one stage. It was disappointing not to get across the line but you would expect a Full Member like Zimbabwe with experience in their ranks to fight, and fight is exactly what they did.”Even though UAE was in a decent position in the field at 92 for 4 in the 20th over in the field defending an adjusted total of 209, Brown says the Zimbabwean pair of Regis Chakabva and Peter Moor batted exceptionally well to get back in front in DLS before play was called off. Moor in particular boosted Zimbabwe in the waning overs to finish with an unbeaten 45 off 33 balls.”We need to give a bit of credit to Zimbabwe for the way that they scrapped,” Brown said. “They got themselves into a bit of a hole themselves. We dug ourselves out of one and they managed to dig themselves out of one. At 92 for 4, if they lose a fifth wicket, particularly Moor – we know he’s a dangerous player and as captain he feels that he’s got to carry the team’s outcome on his shoulders. We knew we had to get him out but he didn’t give a chance and he played really well.”Brown also underlined UAE’s poor finish to their innings as one of the factors in the loss. In the six overs left to bat after play was reduced to 35 overs, UAE lost six wickets, including 4 for 4 runs in the last 11 balls.”We messed up the last five overs,” Brown said. “We only scored 31 runs and lost six wickets. We probably pride ourselves in being able to finish an innings pretty well but I think they played well. They bowled well, made good plans and we didn’t quite manage to react to the plans that they had. It’s disappointing to come away having only scored the 31 runs off the last five overs but they deserve a bit of credit for the plans they put in place.”
