Arsenal now big admirers of £59k-p/w "difference-maker" who is like Kudus

Arsenal are big admirers of a man who could finally fill the gap in Mikel Arteta’s squad that he intended Mohammed Kudus to occupy, it has been claimed.

Arsenal missed out on Kudus

In 2023, West Ham announced the signing of Kudus from Ajax, but it could have been very different. Arsenal and Chelsea were both interested in signing the Ghanaian, Kudus later confirmed, as they looked to bolster their attacking ranks ahead of the 2023-24 Premier League season.

“It’s true they were in contact”, Kudus explained. “But when West Ham came it moved fast and I made my decision based on speaking to people around the club, their project and how they see me as a player.

“I made the decision based on my gut feeling. That’s how I make my decisions. Whatever the ramifications are, I take it upon myself.”

Mohammed Kudus for West Ham

One of the major draws for Mikel Arteta was Kudus’s versatility, with the 24-year-old able to play in central midfield, on the wing or even as a lone striker, all of which he did to good effect at Ajax and which attracted the attention on Mikel Arteta as well as David Moyes.

He has enjoyed a strong start to his Premier League career too, grabbing ten goals and six assists in 41 outings for the Hammers and attracting attention from clubs across Europe.

However, he will not come cheap, with a release clause believed to be around £85m in his contract at the Hammers, suggesting that perhaps for Arsenal that particular ship has sailed. Now, they could have found a younger alternative.

Arsenal big admirers of "difference maker"

That comes as Caught Offside claim that Arsenal are one of two sides chasing impressive Juventus talent Kenan Yildiz.

Arteta must axe 5/10 Arsenal man who lost 100% duels vs Liverpool

Arsenal have been suspect defensively in recent weeks.

ByMatt Dawson Oct 28, 2024

The Turkish international penned a new £59,000 a week deal in Turin in August, and has enjoyed a strong start to the new campaign under Thiago Motta.

He came off the bench to score twice and rescue a draw in their most recent outing against Inter Milan, a cameo that led Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig to hail the 19-year-old a “difference maker” on X.

His form has caught the attention of both Liverpool and Arsenal, and the report claims the Gunners are “big admirers of Yildiz and would be keen to sign someone of his profile to take the burden off Bukayo Saka”.

Still just 19-years-old, the Turkish international would be an expensive addition but would offer a decade of potentially top level football to whoever managed to lure him away from Juventus. He would also likely be cheaper than Kudus, and, listed among “similar players” to the Ghanaian on stat-site FBref, it is easy to see why.

Also capable of playing in midfield or on the left-wing, both have started the season in similar fashion.

Graham Smyth now shares int’l break injury news from Leeds on Manor Solomon

Leeds United have given an injury update on winger Manor Solomon as international duty gets underway, as reported by Graham Smyth.

The second international break of the season is now underway, and it probably comes at the right time for the Whites as they try to get some of their injured players off the treatment table and back onto the pitch.

Sky Sports: Club now plan to sign £10m Leeds player who Farke doesn't want

It looks like one to watch.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 8, 2024 Latest Leeds United news

Leeds are going to have to deal with being unable to call upon Max Wober, Ethan Ampadu, and Ilia Gruev for the next few weeks and possibly months. But in a positive injury update, Leeds could welcome back Daniel James for their clash against Sheffield United, as revealed by Daniel Farke. The winger has been missing since August but could be set for a return in some capacity against the Blades.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Farke plans to stick with Meslier for that game against Chris Wilder’s men, as his blunder against Sunderland is seen as a “freak issue” and he will not be judged by one mistake. The ‘keeper stopped his side from getting all three points over the weekend, but Farke plans to keep the faith for their next crucial clash.

The January transfer window is still a bit away, but Farke could be about to get a flurry of cash coming his way, as Eintracht Frankfurt are already planning on signing Rasmus Kristensen. The defender is on loan to the Bundesliga side from Leeds, and they plan to use the buy option they have and sign him on a permanent basis.

While Leeds will be pleased to have James back for the Blades game, they will also be pushing to have Solomon, and there has now been an update on his situation.

Graham Smyth shares injury update from Leeds on Manor Solomon

As reported by The Yorkshire Evening’s Graham Smyth, Solomon has remained at Thorp Arch despite appearing to be called up to the Israel squad for the forthcoming games. Israel are set to play France and Italy in this international break, and the winger was named in the squad, appearing in their squad graphics published by the Israel Football Association, but he has remained at Leeds’ training ground.

This is because the winger, who is said to earn a weekly wage of £60,000 while on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, has missed the last four Championship games for Leeds due to a back complaint and a hamstring issue.

Solomon’s decision to remain at Thorp Arch is so he can continue his rehabilitation, as he would like to be back fit and available for the Yorkshire side as soon as possible. The 25-year-old was at the training ground on Tuesday morning for treatment, and the hope from Farke is that he can welcome back the winger after the international break, along with James.

Injured Ellyse Perry doubtful for semi-final against West Indies

Australia allrounder says “we’ll probably need to make a decision in the next day or two”

Annesha Ghosh28-Mar-2022Ellyse Perry’s availability for Australia’s World Cup semi-final against West Indies on March 30 remains uncertain two days out from the fixture, she confirmed before heading into her first training session in nearly a week.Perry, who had suffered back spasms and had to go off the field during Australia’s win in the league-stage fixture against South Africa last Tuesday, said she hadn’t trained or “done anything cricket-wise” since.”My back’s going pretty well,” she said. “Obviously, a couple of days still before the match, so I think we’ll still just keep playing that by ear, but [by] bearing in mind that we’ll probably need to make a decision in the next day or so.”At this stage, it’s going really well. But obviously just need to make sure that I’m in the best possible spot to be able to contribute if I was to play, so I think we’ll do a couple more things at training in the next few days. If I get there, I do. Fingers crossed.”During the South Africa match, she appeared to be hurt when tumbling over a boundary rope in a fielding attempt. She didn’t bat as Australia romped to a sixth consecutive win in the tournament.Perry said on Monday she had never had back spasms before in her career, but she made clear the injury was “not hugely serious” and that it “definitely has been improving.” She added “there’s a pretty high percentage that I’ll be able to play at some point” and Australia’s practice session on Monday was likely to offer more insights on her recovery. Before being sidelined from title favourites Australia’s last league game – against Bangladesh on Friday – Perry contributed with both bat and ball in her side’s undefeated campaign. Having shouldered new-ball responsibilities regularly, she took five wickets in six innings, and also scored 146 runs in five innings while being the Player of the Match in back-to-back matches against New Zealand and West Indies.

“They pose a great challenge because they’ve got a really good history of finals cricket in World Cup events”Perry knows West Indies will be up to try and grab a spot in the final

Asked if she would consider missing the semi-final if that makes her a definite inclusion for the final, Perry said such an approach doesn’t sit well with the unpredictability of knockout matches.”I think that is largely up to what’s best for the team and what our team management want to do,” Perry said. “But no, I don’t think you can have that approach to World Cup games, and semi-finals and finals. You just got to play each game, and that’s the most important thing at the time rather than casting your mind ahead to the next match and the final.”West Indies would dearly love to be in that final on Sunday and they will do everything they can to beat us to get there. So it’s the most important match for us this Wednesday at the moment.”Australia had routed West Indies when the two teams met in the league stage at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, the same venue as their semi-final.But despite that result, and their unbeaten run so far, Perry said Australia would not let their guard down against a side they had defeated in the 2013 ODI World Cup final but lost to in the 2016 T20 World Cup equivalent.”They’re a great side. They’re somewhat mercurial in the way that they play,” she said of West Indies. “But they’ve got some incredible weapons – particularly with the bat, [and] with the ball as well. Looking at the way that a lot of teams have played against us and bowled a lot of spin, I think Hayley Matthews has been particularly successful for the Windies with that in this tournament. We will sort of probably face a bit of that.”Deandra Dottin is unbelievably potent with the bat up at the top, especially if she gets going… They pose a great challenge because they’ve got a really good history of finals cricket in World Cup events. They’ll be right up for it, and I kind of hope it’s really cold here in Wellington because that’s a lot different to the Bahamas. Whereas we get a bit cooler weather in Australia sometimes. That’ll be interesting.”A hamstring injury during Australia’s last league fixture in the 2020 T20 World Cup on home soil had ruled Perry out of the semi-finals and the final. So regaining fitness to play this World Cup’s semi-final, she said, would mean a “tremendous amount” to her.”But I think that [feeling] is not new unique to me; the whole team’s really excited about it,” she said. “This tournament’s been coming for a little while too, with the delay last year not being able to stage it. So it’s really exciting that we’re finally at this stage of the tournament, like we’ve been here for a long time as well if you include the quarantine that we had to do before starting out the campaign.”It’s kind of the reason why you play I suppose at this level is to compete in big events and in big moments. So certainly the girls are really excited for that. It’s certainly great to be here. I’m really looking forward to it and seeing what we’re capable of.”

Walsh swaps Barcelona for ChelseaDelighted to join WSL leadersOpens up on Barca "struggles"Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

After being linked with a move to the Blues, the Women's Super League leaders announced the arrival of Walsh on a four-and-a-half-year deal. The 27-year-old said it was "unbelievable" to join the west London team, while explaining why moving on from Barca was the right call.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT KEIRA WALSH SAID

She told Chelsea's website: "It’s unbelievable. I’m very happy to be here and very excited to get started. You look at the history of the trophies Chelsea have won and I’m an ambitious player and person, so for me, it is a good fit. Speaking to Paul Green, Sonia [Bompastor] and Camille [Abily], I just got such a good feeling from them. It has been really positive. I want to play for this club and fight for the badge."

Walsh added: "It was a massive motivator. I’ll be honest, I didn’t realise how difficult it would be to be away from my family and friends when I went abroad. It was such a quick transfer that I didn’t have time to process how I would be on my own. Sometimes, it was actually really difficult and I did struggle away from the pitch sometimes. This season was a bit easier because Ellie Roebuck came in and me and her have been such good friends for a long time. It’s no secret that I wanted to come and wanted to play closer to my friends and family. Just having my family back in the stands, it’s something I’ve just wanted for a long time. When I spoke to Chelsea, I knew that I wanted to come here."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

England international Walsh had two-and-a-half years at Barcelona, winning a whopping eight trophies in that period. But being away from her friends and family took its toll and now she has moved to another top team in Europe.

An instant rebuke for Yusuf

Plays of the day from the game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians in Cuttack

Siddarth Ravindran14-May-2014The jaw-breaker
Few IPL innings go by without a sitter being put down. When Mumbai Indians were batting today, it was Yusuf Pathan’s turn to be butter-fingered. Mumbai Indians were struggling for runs on a tricky surface where the ball kept low at times, and when Rohit Sharma was 11 off 23, he swung hard. The ball soared a mile up, but didn’t get far enough and Yusuf settled under it, preparing to take it Australian reverse-cup style. Not only did the ball slip through his fingers, it also hit him on the chin – an instant rebuke to his shoddy fielding. The grubber
With two decent scores in his past two innings, Lendl Simmons was promising to be the opener Mumbai had been searching for all season. There was not another substantial score today, though, as Simmons was undone by a Shakib Al Hasan arm ball that refused to rise above shin height. Simmons was down the track looking for a big hit, but the ball scooted well under his cross-batted effort to knock over legstump. The variation
Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa had just posted their fourth consecutive half-century partnership, putting Knight Riders on course for a victory. Harbhajan Singh started the seventh over, and got the first delivery to rip a long way outside off. Gambhir smiled ruefully seeing that the umpire hadn’t called it a wide. Perhaps expecting the next delivery to fizz away as well, Gambhir went for the cut, but this time the ball didn’t turn much and a cramped Gambhir could only inside-edge onto the stumps. The free-hit
Morne Morkel was closing in on the 150kmph mark in the early overs. One of the rare chances the batsmen got to swing at the ball was when there was a free-hit in the third over. Morkel responded with a quick bouncer, but the umpire deemed it too high and ruled it a wide. Morkel’s answer this time was the perfect yorker, which Ambati Rayudu could only tuck away for a single.

A negociação entre Botafogo e Portimonense começou ainda no mês passado. Entre dificuldades, o Glorioso conseguiu o final feliz na reta final da janela. Lucas afirmou que muito disso partiu dele, destacando o projeto do Glorioso.

Islamabad United book playoffs berth despite big loss

Rizwan’s half-century helped Multan canter to a six-wicket win despite a brief early stutter against a depleted United

Danyal Rasool20-Feb-2022

Mohammad Rizwan made another half-century•PSL

There was very little riding on this game, and perhaps that shone through in the way it played out. Islamabad United, hobbling on as injuries continue to ravage them, limped to 105 in 20 overs, before an unbeaten 42-ball 51 from Mohammad Rizwan helped Multan Sultans canter to a six-wicket victory despite a brief early stutter. But for the unlikeliest of miracles United were assured progression to the last four, though the depleted state in which they eventually get there perhaps raises questions about their ability to be competitive.United, like Quetta Gladiators, who won earlier against Karachi Kings, finish with four wins in ten, but had the cushion of a vastly superior net run rate to sneak through to the eliminator. Making half a dozen changes – goodness knows how many enforced – they were no match for a ruthless Sultans bowling line-up, who bent them to their will all innings. Besides Liam Dawson and Muhammad Musa, no Islamabad batter managed better than a run-a-ball, with Asif Afridi, Imran Tahir, and even Tim David chipping in with wickets.Azam Khan in the middle order was United’s best hope of a big total, with superstars and power hitters in short supply elsewhere. But he ended up struggling most of all, put out of his misery by a ripper of a catch at deep midwicket by Shan Masood, who can’t seem to put a foot wrong in this competition. Skipper Asif Ali’s wretched PSL with the bat continued, with Masood once more taking the catch at deep midwicket to burrow into the lower order. Only a devil-may-care cameo from Musa, who finished unbeaten with 26 in 21, helped his side get to three figures, setting the Sultans 106 for victory. They needed to get there in an almost mathematically impossible 3.4 overs if United were to be eliminated at the Gladiators’ expense. Instead, they got a brief scare of their own when three early wickets by Dawson reduced them to 18 for three, and Tim David fell cheaply. But a situation like this is tailor-made for Mohammad Rizwan, who was happy to steer his side towards the target. In David Willey, he had a partner who understood the situation, and shelved his big shots for a sensible, game-appropriate knocking, finishing unbeaten with 28 off 32.It was a game that seemed to be dragging on interminably, and the Sultans stretched it out till the 18th over before finally putting United, and indeed the contest, out of its misery. There was still time for Rizwan to give his phenomenal career numbers another shot in the arm, getting to 50 with a glorious six over cover for the winnings runs. The Sultans now get ready for a likely blockbuster against the Sultans on Wednesday, with United left licking wounds both literal and metaphorical.

'Cricket is the difference between being a good citizen and a thug'

Kenneth Kamyuka came to cricket so he could eat well, but stayed on for the game, and ended up moving to another continent for it

Firdose Moonda20-Sep-2013Shane Warne turned to cricket after being cut from a second-string Aussie Rules team. Dale Steyn took up the sport when he realised a career as a skateboarder would not work out in South Africa. And Kumar Sangakkara chose batting over the baseline when a teacher advised his mother that it would serve him better than his tennis. But Kenneth Kamyuka played cricket to eat.”I was a good soccer player but the soccer team didn’t go out to play matches as much as the cricket team. The cricketers went out every weekend and they would get fed there,” Kamyuka said. “I didn’t have lots of pocket money, so I gave up soccer for cricket. For me, it wasn’t about cricket as much as it was going to get a good meal.”The century-old Busoga College Mwiri, where Kamyuka was educated, is one of Uganda’s most prestigious schools. Overlooking Lake Victoria, it was previously patronised only by the sons of kings and chiefs but has since started offering all Ugandans the chance to benefit from its magnificent facilities. It’s difficult to imagine the food would be bad in such a school, but boarding school dinners have a reputation for being bland, and Kamyuka obviously preferred what he got while playing cricket. It wasn’t long before he began to enjoy the game too.The school’s cricket team was strong and had won nine championships in a row, some of them during Kamyuka’s time. He was identified by coach Justin Ligaylingi for higher honours.Cricket in Uganda is a relatively minor sport with a small community, so a talented player quickly becomes a star. Kamyuka was one such. He recalled a performance at league level that made him stand out. “Against a development team I bowled ten overs, went for 25 runs and picked up all ten wickets myself.”At 19, Kamyuka scored an unbeaten century, from No. 10, against Malaysia in the 2001 ICC Trophy, and was soon hailed as one of the most talented players of his generation.Eight years later, in the World Cricket League Division Three tournament in Argentina, he picked up four Man-of-the-Match awards from five innings and led the wickets chart with 18 at 6.33.He turned out for Uganda at the World Cup qualifiers later that year but shortly after that his relationship with the authorities turned sour. Kamyuka was frustrated by the lack of opportunities, especially to play in other countries, and felt cricket was not being properly managed in Uganda. “I used to play overseas through my own arrangement,” he said. “I didn’t feel the officials had the best interests of the players at heart.”Kamyuka decided to pull the plug on his Uganda career when fell out with the board over daily payments. He called a former schoolmate, Henry Osinde, who had moved to Canada and was now playing for their national side, and told him of his troubles back home. Osinde invited him to visit Canada. Kamyuka did, liked what he saw, and stayed. But by now 27, Kamyuka had to wait four years to qualify for Canada’s national side. He decided to take the chance nevertheless. With Osinde’s assistance, he found a club to play for, impressed with his performances, and was selected for the national team as soon as he became available. He made his debut last month against Netherlands and took a wicket with his first ball. The fixture was washed out but Kamyuka’s figures of 4 for 38 from 5.5 overs, although expensive, were enough to prove his ability and desire. “It was just another game for me. I had one game and one chance to prove myself. I love situations like that,” Kamyuka said. “I haven’t been playing at that level for four years but straight from club level, I picked up a wicket on my first ball.” He especially enjoyed his second dismissal – that of Michael Swart. “He hit me for a few runs before that so I had a few words for him after I got him.”Kamyuka also dedicated his performance to the Canada captain Ashish Bagai, who has backed him from the beginning. “He was the reason I’m playing,” Kamyuka said. “He pushed for me to play and I told all my friends that if I don’t make it I would have let the captain down. He believed in me and supported me no matter what people said, because he had seen me play before.”Kamyuka took a wicket off his first ball for Canada•Eddie NorfolkBagai too is an immigrant to Canada, as are many of his national team-mates. But Ravin Moorthy, Cricket Canada president, does not look at arrivals like Kamyuka as hindrances to the growth of the local game. “The majority of our players come through our youth systems,” Moorthy said. “In the 2011 World Cup, half of our players came out of our development programmes. This is a fact that we are very proud of. We are very fortunate to be able to augment this core talent with players who move to Canada and join our set-up. Even players who do not make it to the national programme help bring up the level of our domestic competition and local leagues, which creates a more robust competition.”Moorthy hopes Kamyuka’s success continues, especially with 2015 World Cup qualifiers looming. “It’s a big plus to have a player like Kenneth, who we have played against in previous World Cup qualifiers. When we reach the qualifiers, having a player who has experience at this level certainly benefits the team.”But before that the 2014 World Twenty20 qualifiers have to be tackled in November in the UAE. Kamyuka will be an integral part of Canada’s squad for the tournament. He believes Canada have a strong chance, more so than Uganda, because of the composition of their squad and their ability to play spin, which may be a factor in the conditions in the UAE.”We’re not too far off, especially in the T20s. Canada has the edge when it comes to experience,” Kamyuka said. “Uganda is weak against spin bowling while Canada has slow wickets that make us better equipped for spin.”Even if Canada don’t make it through the qualifiers, Kamyuka has pledged to keep playing the game, because it gave him a better life. “I want to keep playing, keep fit and have fun. Cricket is the difference between where I am right now – being a good citizen – and being a thug on the streets. Cricket and I are inseparable.”

Ipswich Town want to sign £10m player after Phillips, Szmodics and Cajuste

da esoccer bet: Ipswich Town are turning their attention to signing a £10 million defender after their recent captures, according to reports.

da bwin: The Tractor Boys finally got their Premier League season underway on Saturday, as they played host to Liverpool. It was always going to be a tough start for Ipswich, and that turned out to be the case, as they were beaten 2-0.

However, Kieran McKenna is not going to judge his side too much on games like that, as he knows their chances of success against the big opponents will be slim.

Ipswich Town also in talks to sign another £30m forward alongside Szmodics

It could be a busy end to the window.

ByCharlie Smith Aug 16, 2024 Ipswich Town’s latest signings

As soon as Ipswich confirmed their promotion to the top flight, it was expected that the club would be very busy in terms of making changes to the squad as they try to adapt as quickly as possible to the new league.

So far, the Tractor Boys have brought in nine new players in this transfer window, while they have also seen a lot of players depart the club, either as contracts have expired, they have been sold, or they have been sent out on loan for the campaign.

Sammie Szmodics

Some of those arrivals for Ipswich include Omari Hutchinson, who spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Portman Road. The winger has also been joined by Liam Delap and Jacob Greaves, who both played at Hull City last season, and Ipswich have added Arijanet Muric to their goalkeeping department.

The club has also made more additions, with the likes of Ben Johnson and Conor Townsend joining in this transfer window. But Ipswich have been very busy in the last week or so, as the club has made three new signings, with Kalvin Phillips joining on loan for the season from Manchester City, Sammie Szmodics joining in a big money move from Blackburn Rovers, and Jens Cajuste arriving on a loan deal from Serie A side Napoli.

McKenna will hope all three players can improve his team as they bid to beat the drop to the Championship. But despite just adding these three players to the squad, it appears as though Ipswich’s transfer hunt isn’t over yet, as the club is eyeing a £10 million deal for a defender.

Ipswich Town hold an interest in Dara O’Shea

According to reliable journalist Alan Nixon, relayed by The 72, Ipswich Town are interested in signing Burnley defender Dara O’Shea in a £10 million switch.

The report states that the Tractor Boys are eying up a deal for the defender, which could be worth £10 million, as they look to beat Brentford to the signing, as they have also been credited with an interest in the player.

Nixon goes on to say that the Irish defender may be patient in deciding where he next wants to go to play, but that risks the possibility of Ipswich and McKenna moving on to other transfer targets.

The 25-year-old joined the Clarets in the summer transfer window last year from West Bromwich Albion. O’Shea played 37 times for Burnley last season in all competitions, with 33 of those games coming in the Premier League.

It was worth the wait. Rohit Sharma’s first Test hundred away from home took India into a dominant position against England at The Oval, leaving them well-placed to push for a 2-1 lead in the series.Rohit shared partnerships of 83 and 153 for the first and second wicket with KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara, pressing on through the third morning after seeing out 16 overs on the second evening. India opener KL Rahul was fined 15% of his match fee for violating the ICC Code of Conduct by showing dissent at an umpiring decision.
The incident occurred during the third day of the fourth Test, in the 34th over of India’s second innings, when Rahul showed dissent on being adjudged caught behind following a review. He was also handed one demerit point for the offence, his first in 24 months.
The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth official Mike Burns. Rahul admitted to the Level 1 breach and accepted the penalty imposed by match referee Chris Broad, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

He was eventually dismissed in bizarre fashion, heaving a pull straight to long leg when Ollie Robinson dug the second new ball into the pitch, and when Robinson had Pujara caught in the slips via an inside edge into his back thigh five balls later, England were back in the game. But Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja – retaining his spot at No. 5 – battled through before bad light brought an early close shortly before 5.45pm local time.Rohit rode his luck at times, offering two chances to Rory Burns at second slip, but neither was taken. The first came on the second evening when he had made only six: he edged James Anderson into the cordon, but Burns appeared not to pick the ball up against the backdrop of the crowd and only realised it had come in his direction once it had brushed his foot on its way to the boundary.Rohit Sharma deposited one in the stands at long-on to get to his century•Getty ImagesThe second came on 31, when Ollie Robinson had him poking defensively at a wide-ish ball on a good length. Third slip had been moved into the covers shortly before, meaning Burns had to fling himself to his right; he could only get a fingertip to it, pushing it down towards third man.Anderson made the breakthrough shortly after Burns’ second drop, inducing an outside edge from Rahul. Rahul had started brightly, driving Chris Woakes down the ground for four and pulling him for six, but England bowled dry to stem the flow of runs. Anderson found a hint of movement away off the seam as Rahul came forward to defend; the on-field decision was not out, but the DRS showed a healthy outside edge.Related

Stats – Rohit Sharma's first overseas Test century

Rahul gestured to the umpires that he had flicked his back pad with his bat on the way through, but replays confirmed the ball had hit the bat after that. England reviewed an lbw appeal shortly before lunch with Rohit on 42, but DRS confirmed it was an optimistic shout.Pujara started his innings brightly, admittedly helped by some loose bowling from England’s change bowlers, but had to overcome an injury scare shortly after lunch. He rolled his ankle turning at the non-striker’s end and underwent seven minutes of treatment from the physio with heavy strapping before resuming.Rohit punched Craig Overton off the back foot for two to bring up his fifty and Pujara continued to bat fluently, cutting two boundaries in the space of three balls off Overton – the second a deft, late upper-cut over the vacant gully region. Rohit cruised through the 90s, pulling Anderson for four and then bringing up his hundred with a straight six, celebrating in restrained style.Rohit’s comparative struggles overseas compared to in India have often been used as a stick to beat him with but this was further proof that he is still one of the best all-format players in the world. This was his third 50+ score in the series and his eighth Test hundred in all – three of them brought up with a six.Cheteshwar Pujara brings out the upper cut during his knock of 61•Getty ImagesPujara brought up his own half-century – his second in three innings – by steering Overton away behind square after tea, as England tried out a short-ball strategy with the second new ball looming to no great effect. The crowd were subdued, with the partnership extending past 150 as Moeen and Root’s offbreaks were milked. But Robinson struck twice in the first over bowled with the new ball to change the complexion of the day and enliven the crowd. The first was an innocuous ball, a back-of-a-length loosener which hardly got up above waist-height, which Rohit inexplicably pulled straight to long leg; five balls later, Pujara was cramped for room playing off the back foot and inside-edged to third slip via the back thigh, given out on review.Jadeja walked out to join Kohli, keeping his position at No. 5 after his surprise promotion in the first innings, and the pair saw India through to the close with Kohli again looking in superb form, creaming two cover drives away for four. They will resume with a lead of 171 on the fourth morning and while the pitch appears to have flattened out, India will be much the happier side overnight.
